Far and away, our favorite family meal during our recent trip to Germany and Austria was at the Augustiner am Platzl in Munich. Situated about two blocks from the main square at Marienplatz, the Augustiner am Platzl sits kitty-corner from the famous (and very touristy) Höfbräuhaus München. The Augustiner is a much smaller beer hall, offers a more authentic atmosphere, and feels very much like a place that locals go. Having eaten there every time I've been to Munich, we chose it as the place for a special family meal. The menu offers a wide variety of traditional German dishes including brathaus beef, Nürnberger sausages, schweinsbraten (pork), roast beef with onion, grilled chicken (for the less adventurous) and more. Soups and salads were also on the menu and our party of 13 ordered a pretty impressive cross-section of the restaurant's dishes. The establishment is tied to the Augustiner brewery, which lays claim to being the oldest of all existing Munich breweries, dating back to the early 14th century. As a result, only Augustiner beers are on offer, though there is a good selection, including "hell" beer (light or bright), edelstoff (a light export beer), dark, pilsner and wheat beer. There is also a decent selection of both red and white German wines and of course, soft drinks. But this is Germany! What adult needs a soft drink? The day we visited was also our oldest grandson's 15th birthday so there were many reasons to celebrate. And this occasion was made even more memorable by the others who shared the upstairs dining room with our party of 13. When we sang "Happy Birthday!" many of our fellow diners joined in the singing and the applause that followed. Talk about making us feel like part of the community! Between the great food, attentive service (even by American standards!) and the convivial atmosphere, I highly recommend the Augustiner am Platzl for anyone wanting a true German dining experience. read more

If you are in Munich, do try to visit Augustiner am Platzel. When you walk in, find yourself a open table and grab it. Do not grab the tables by the entrance, walk around and explore, they got tables all over the place and have beer garden, so make sure to find a table that works for you. Once seated, wait until the wait staff come to you, this might take some time, but they will come to you, so don't worry. They do have English menu, by default German menu is on the table. Their food is decent, nothing special vs other restaurants that I've tried. But the experience itself will be worth it. read more

My husband and I recently had a great low key meal at the bar of the Augustiner. It wasn't as rowdy as in some breweries and had nice wines by the glass (for me) and my husband enjoyed his beer. It was fun to sit at the bar and talk to the friendly bartender, check out the brewing memorabilia and watch the locals enjoy their evening. For some reason, this place didn't seem overly touristy and the food (wurst, baked goat cheese salad) was excellent! read more

It's across from Hard Rock and Hofbräuhaus. It's visited by locals but I'm sure tourists check them out for the ease ability to get a table compared to the other two restaurants near. It is much smaller than the hofbraühaus but does not mean it's not as good. The beer is good. Definitely enjoyed the live band that was there. Chicken wasn't as seasoned as expected but it wasn't the worse I've ever eaten. Skin is seasoned and crispy. Our waitress seemed annoyed with us trying to use German due to us mispronouncing some words. This was the first time experiencing that. Typically they corrected us and seemed happy we were trying to even speak German as opposed to speaking English. The apple tart was decent. The beer was good. The curry wurst was also good. Their Spätzle was good. Definitely worth trying if you have never had it before. This is definitely a traditional German type place. read more

Relatively good experience at Augustiner am Platzl. It's a lively atmosphere and very busy. Our server was nice; said his English was not good but we found it to be just fine. The potato soup was served quickly and was very hearty. The problem was, our server forgot to put in our dinner order. We watched while everyone around us were served their meals. When waiter came back and asked us what we ordered we knew there was a problem. It was another 45 minutes until our food was delivered and the pretzel I ordered was forgotten (yet it was on the bill and I reminded him to remove it). The food was good. The veal meatballs were delicious. My husband had the Zwiebelrostbraten with crispy onions and spätzle. Most definitely delicious and the meat was fork tender. I hate to be a suspicious person but we got the feeling that they are more attentive to the German crowd and less so to tourists. Dinner with friends when we were in Munich. This place is near Marienplatz. It has a nice vibes and this place is spacious. They have 3 levels and the place is almost full around 6:30pm on Monday night. As a vegetarian, I opted for the Allgäuer Käsespätzle (cheese noodles) and rhubarbschorle (rhubarb juice with sparkling water). The food was good and very filling and the drink was refreshing. Dropped in here on the recommendation of a local, not sure that I wanted to brave the Hofbrauhaus on my own. First off - since drinking beer is a federal law in Bavaria, I was obliged to indulge. After riding my rental bike from this area to BMW Welt and back, I was ready for brew, and was not disappointed! German food is not my favorite cuisine - it's too heavy and often too bland for my taste, but I did enjoy my meal here. It's been a while but I was able to order something small enough that I didn't have to roll myself out the door. Prices were reasonable, service was decent, and I enjoyed some fun conversation at the group tables (a refreshing change from American-style seating, especially for the solo traveler). A traditional German restaurant with lots of beer being passed around! We were able to get in because the woman at the front desk of our hotel called and got us a spot. If she wouldn't have done that we would've had to wait. This is a very popular spot! I had the half roast chicken with potato salad. The dish was very good. This meal was well-deserved after my friends and I completed a walking tour of the city. I opted for the sausage and sauerkraut, which was juicy and scrumptious! My brother got the Leberkäse (German meatloaf), my dad got the roasted pork, and my friend got the duck. All dishes were piping hot and flavorful. Their Augustiner beer was refreshing as well. Of the 8-10 bars I visited while in Munich, Augustiner am Platzl is probably my favorite. First, it has an actual bar where you can sit and belly up for the evening. Second, the atmosphere, fellow bar patrons, food, and beers were all incredible. Easily made friends with a local, a couple from Ireland, and a gentleman from Spain. We had a blast together. The noise level was higher, but it was because everyone was having such a great time, drinking and laughing. The food was delicious, and the portions fairly large. The Schweinshaxe is a must-try. But the absolute best part was the beer (Helles that evening). Augustiner beer poured out of a wooden barrel. Watching them toss another on the bar, grab the wooden mallet, and tap it was so much fun. Their location is perfect. After walking in the front doors, I migrated to the left to the large square bar with a rounded corner. They have a wooden bar top and comfy bar stools. Nothing special about the back bar or the decor, but everything worked perfectly. Overall the food was a little better, the beer slightly tastier, the atmosphere more enjoyable, and the people happier. Augustiner am Platzl will be my first stop when I make it back to Munich. read more

We spoke from the start in German, we have been living in and visiting Munich for 14 years and this was the only time a waiter refused to speak German to us and in fact offered an English menu when I asked for a Turlaner wine instead of the Lugana wine they offered. (PS we have been to the area that produces Lugana so was a true mix up not a language issue.) We then tried to bridge a friendly atmosphere as one of the co workers looked like a young Paul Breitner, this is one of the most famous World Cup winning players Germany has ever produced and still the condescending tone and the waiter would only speak in English. (PS the waiter did not know who Paul Breitner was... maybe not a fan but it is like an American not knowing who Micheal Jordan, Mohammed Ali or Babe Ruth was) We forgot what a touristic trap this place can be and will not return! The owners Oliver and Barbara Wendel would be smart to save their interest and rid themselves of such a terrible server. Better options are only steps away! **GOOD BEER AND FOOD** If you're headed to the Hofbrauhaus, there's a very good chance that you walk by this place. AMBIANCE ========= Loud, busy, full of locals and tourists. There are two rooms to this restaurant and a backwards "L"shaped bar set to one side. There was seating upstairs, but sat downstairs at a communal table. Typical Bavarian beer house decor with dark wood. FOOD ===== **ROASTED DUCK AND PORK WITH POTATO DUMPLING (16,90 €)** The meats were good. Not the most tender, but still flavorful. The dumpling was a bit on the softer side. Tasted wonderful with beer (duh). BEVERAGE ========= Three different beers pouring from tap (Edelstoff, Helles, Dunkel), plus a handful of additional Augustiner beers from the bottle (including their hefeweizen and pilsner). Half and full liter pours are available from tap, and half-liters were priced well at €3.40-3.65. AUGUSTINER EDELSTOFF (3,60 €) This was definitely good beer. This German restaurant is the real deal! Everything was delicious and ended up being my group's favorite meal in Munich, Germany. The décor of the restaurant was cool and had a very authentic German vibe to it. Next to our table was this pillar that had tree branches coming off the top of it, and each tree branch was holding a hanging pretzel, we thought this was pretty cool. The beer of course was delicious as well, super refreshing and clean tasting. For food we tried their leberkaese, sausage platter, roasted crispy pork plate, and the roasted duck. Everything had so much flavor, and all the sides accompanied the food perfectly. I really liked the crispy crust on the leberkaese and the fried egg on top. Nothing at this restaurant disappointed us, and I would travel back to Munich just to eat here again. I only wish they could open up a location in Houston, Texas, USA. read more

I had heard a lot of things about the Hofbrauhaus & its craziness and lack of tasty food, so of course I decided to go with the locals' pick of Augustiner am Platzl, which is conveniently located right across from the Hofbrauhaus. I have to say nothing really set this place as special for me... upon walking in and asking for a table for 3 in English, the staff looked around, noticed all the empty tables in the dining hall, but proceeded to seat us near the door. This isn't my first Europe trip, and anyone who has experienced discrimination/racism as a foreigner will know that being seated near the door is a microaggression sign. I asked politely and requested a better table, especially because my mother does not fare well in the cold near the door (the truth). He then allowed us to choose our own table in the back-- the only ones available being a 4-seater super high table with bar stool seats or a 6-table seater. We, of course, opted for the bigger table, which led to the staff being visibly annoyed. Hey, he told us to choose our table and the table did not say it was reserved. Upon being seated, we noticed 2 tourists similarly being seated in the bar stool table in the back next to us. Service was extremely slow, especially after we asked for the English menu, but the service visibly improved after our server was switched to one who spoke English and attentively asked how our food was. The only reason why I did't give this place lower stars despite it being a pretty lackluster first dinner in Munich is because that server was friendly. The beer is very good (and the selection varied) and the food is traditional (the fries a bit too salty). Overall, the ambience of the beer house is traditional. I say if you're going to visit, go with a German speaker or a local to guide you. read more

The decision was made - rightfully so - that in the short time we had in Munich, we would pay the famous Hofbrauhaus a visit but it probably wouldn't be worth the time to wait for beer and food, but that the Augustiner would give us all the ambiance, the experience, and the quality of beer and food of a traditional Bavarian beer hall without the ridiculous wait. Well... Augustiner certainly hit some of the goals we had for it. Being taken to the lower level dining area and arriving in the late afternoon, there was no crowd, so being seated quickly was a plus. Speedy and friendly service was also a nice perk and, while still a super touristy beer hall, there was something nice about having televisions tuned to Bundesliga matches above the bar area that at least gave the impression that locals visited this place. As someone who likes darker beers, the Dunkel is very nice, albeit I thought it was on the weak side. But unfortunately, the food was very disappointing. The visual of the enormous potato dumpling was impressive on first sight until you start eating into it and discover, instead of this creamy, rich texture you expect, it's more like you're slogging your way through an enormous and dense, savory gummi ball. By no means does it taste bad - it's potato sitting in delicious meat juice, after all - but it's just a chore to eat. The pork knuckle was prepared much better - cooked to a wonderful, fall-of-the-bone level of extreme tenderness - only ruined again by what should have been an amazing square of fried pork skin, so overcooked that, instead of being this crisp accompaniment to the pork knuckle, it was this hard-as-glass sheet that refused any attempt to bite into it or cut with a knife. Nope, nope, nope. As the meal progressed, the restaurant filled fast with both locals and tourists. Off the beaten path, this place is not. And as someone who as yet to visit the famous Hofbrauhaus, I have no idea how the food compares. But my expectations in the future for Munich's world renowned beer halls has taken a slight hit. While the service, the beer, and the pork knuckle were good, the overall experience was pretty meh. I'm inclined to try other beer halls on future visits to Munich. read more

Located across from Hofbrauhaus, this competing beer hall is the "locals favorite" so it's only 90% tourists. It certainly feels less intense and less packed. Food: holy delicious schweinebraten! Big slices of roast pork with dumpling and gravy. Mmm..... Service: quick and efficient. Pleasant and not to be messed with, these ladies are "experienced". Crowd: maybe a little older and less touristy than Hofbrauhaus. It's lower key, cozier and I like it better personally. Beer: the helles.....delicious. I made sure to consume loads since it's not available in the US. Etiquette: baskets of pretzels are on the table, if you eat them you'll be charged. Eat them anyway, they are delicious. Silverware and napkins are in the center too, as are coasters. Seating is communal so get to know your neighbors. read more

Straight across from Hofbrauhaus and Hard Rock! This place is super cozy and the ambiance was great. It seemed to be more of a local spot so I didn't see too many tourists at this place. Warning: make sure you don't bring in any drinks from outside into this place, it's strictly prohibited (unless you're super sneaky like me and got my drink in & your friend almost gets kicked out for doing the same.... ). Let me just say I never had a radler or dunkle the entire time I was in Munich until this place, so I got the Dunkles radler (which consists of darker beer and lemonade). It was super refreshing but a little sweet for my tastes but nonetheless German beer is so gooood. If you're deciding to choose between Hofbrauhaus and this place, I definitely recommend this place better. It's cheaper and has better beer! read more

I had the 1/2 hendl (chicken) which during lunch time (12.00/14.30) costs only €6.90 (without sides). This place is so good we ate here twice!!!! After having a horrible experience across the street at Hofbrauhaus we came here and received much better service and the food was amazing! The 1st night we ate here I have the duck with sauerkraut. The duck was tender and juicy and the sauerkraut paired with it so well! I also had the dark dunkle beer and it was some of the best beer we had in the trip. Our last night of the trip we liked this place so much that we had it for our last meal. This time I ordered the wiener schnitzel and it was amazing! They serve it with a cranberry sauce that pairs great with the schnitzel. I completely understand the frustration with tourists...especially the tourists who find this place after having left or not been able to sit in the nearby Hofbräuhaus. However, I'm not sure it justifies the general behavior of the staff. People are generally accommodating until they realize that you are not a local (my German is quite good, but my accent gives me away) and then you might as well eat somewhere else. The food was not of quality to make up for the service. The beer was poured hastily and angrily. We witnessed the staff arguing with a couple, and shooing another group away. Our biggest achievement was that we seemed to partially gain an inkling of respect from the bartenders because we did not speak much, drank, and got out of there. I give it two stars because we were able to sit and drink in relative peace. read more

After our efforts to score a table at the Hofbrauhaus next door, we managed to snag a table in the thick of 2nd floor at Augustiner. And what a great spot it was! Once the beers started flowing, and our seemingly endless supply of delicious eats started arriving, our night was made. We stuffed ourselves silly on delicious German beer (Augustiner, of course!), yummy cheese spaetzel, ridiculously awesome dumplings, and some of the best roasted pork we'd ever tasted! Next time, Augustiner won't play second fiddle to Hofbrauhaus. It'll be our first stop! read more
