The accompanying lemon helped but it needed a sauce Goulash soup - good and hearty. My husband did all the researching on beer gardens in Germany and he discovered this place. He told me that it was one of the biggest in Munich and so we decided to give it a try. They give you large, endless options of pretzels, the beers are rather good, so good that I ended up getting two glasses of my own and I'm not a beer drinker! A beautiful, warm evening in September, days before Oktoberfest, and this place was packed. Our group of 5 did not have a table reserved and had to wander a bit, but staff found us a table. The US Beer Gardens don't even come close. Filled with people (there are 5,000 seats!), yet orderly and not too loud (who knew you could have that many people in a beer garden and it not be too loud), add huge potent beers and the incredible bavarian food and its the PERFECT Munich Beer Garden Experience. Awesome place! We went for New Year's Eve dinner here and it was such an enjoyable experience. I met a Swiss couple and and Italian family that sat by us. The funny thing is that we conversed in French with each other! The beer and food was absolutely amazing along with the atmosphere and the staff. The waitress was gracious enough to let me try to speak to her in German. Trust me, she was patient because my German is nacht so gut! Quaint, fun environment with excellent food. I had been suggested this place after doing quite a bit of research. If there was anything that I was going to get out of my brief trip to München, it was going to be a genuine Bavarian dining experience with real beer. This place did not disappoint. I ordered the Schweinshaxe - braised pork knuckle - served with a potatoe dumpling in it's own sauce. There at least 3 different types of meat on the cut: the outer crunchy skin, the fatty yet still well baked layer beneath (like Mexican carnitas), and a darker type of meat (something like a turkey) closer to the bone. The dumpling had an interesting texture (firm yet bouncy?) but was superbly delicious, if not a bit oversalted. It was a journey in meat that paired exceptionally well with my liter of Helles. My SO ordered the weiner schnitzel despite my pleas for her to try the müncher schnitzel, which is a regional specialty. It was good but not exceptional so I'd suggest otherwise. Speaking of beer, their Helles was probably my favorite beer of the big breweries that I tried during the trip including Hofbrauhaus, Lowenbrau, Paulaner, and Schneider Weisse. We had an older gentleman serving us. He was rude, offered no suggestions or help when we asked about what beers they had. We literally had to point at beer at another table to get some. This is a great place to visit if you want to experience a biergarten at night. When we walked in it was so packed, but the host quickly found us a table outside and gave us English menus. This was our favorite beer garden experience while we were in Munich. It was a tad bit chilly outside, but the giant beers warmed us as well as the friendly atmosphere with the lights hanging around the trees and the friendly carefree mood of everyone. It still amazes me that these places are so old and hold so many people, but service is still timely and not crazy (when you think about 5000 people drinking giant beers out of heavy glass mugs)! This place had our favorite schnitzel out of our whole trip! It was breaded in a cheese and pretzel crust with a side of potato salad and it was out of this world flavorful. The sausage sampler is also a must and did not disappoint. How could you go wrong with different perfectly cooked flavorful sausages with mashed potatoes and sauerkraut? Great tasting food! I had sausage over sauerkraut with mashed potatoes on the side. What I expected and more! My boyfriend had gotten the 1/4 lamb. SO MUCH FOOD!! If you get this, make sure you're really hungry, or definitely shareable for two. Beer is great. Obviously. The one thing I was a little uneasy about was the fact that the waiters don't tell you the pretzels on the table are not complimentary. There is a basket of tons of pretzels on every table, and you'd think they were complimentary because no one tells you they actually cost anything until you ask for your check. Then, they ask if you'd had any (we had 3) and then they add the 3 pretzels onto the bill. They don't cost much, but it would have been great to know, and I wouldn't have eaten so many haha. Make sure to make reservations for dinner. We went without and we ended up in the basement (storage cellar). The atmosphere is really cool, but the menu is different from the restaurant upstairs. I wanted to try the Pfefferschnitzel, only to be disappointed that it is only offered upstairs. So I got the regular schnitzel, which was just okay. This place is a bit chaotic but still a lot of fun. There is outdoor seating and two different indoor areas. We still don't understand the difference between the beer hall and restaurant - the menus looked the same and the wait staff walked between both sides. We ended up at the beer hall side after getting denied many times in the restaurant. You have to fend for yourself. There is no hostess - you see a seat, sit! Everyone shares space and it's incredible how quickly you get served when you sit. I guess that's why the waiters carry the change purse with them so they get paid correctly each time. We enjoyed some beers, pretzels, boar, pork shank and different sausages. It was a pretty delicious experience. I couldn't finish my HALF pork shank and asked for a doggie bag. My fiance and I thought we found beer garden heaven in Austria......then we arrived in Germany. Augustiner Keller is amazing! We arrived around 7pm and the place was completely packed. The beer garden holds 6,800 people and almost every seat was taken. We were told by the host that you simply walk around and try to find seats. Once you do, you have to ask the table if you are allowed to join them. After strolling around for a bit, we saw two seats available at a table where two local couples were sitting. They kindly let us join them. We ordered a pretzel with obatzer (incredible!!), pork schnitzel, potato salad, a potato dumpling, and some enormous beers. Now, I have never been much of a beer lover, however, in Germany it's delicious! It's no wonder that this place is the oldest running, and most popular, beer garden in Munich. It's so fun!! Probably really fun to be outside in the summer. We arrived without reservations on a Friday night during a major convention time in the city. They told us to go to the cellar. At first, that sounded like a sentence. Later, we celebrated our good fortune. Seems that the cellar is where the locals go. Live German band playing seriously genuine German music--all sounding like marches. Frequently, diners would break into singing along with the band. At times, as though it were their job. Very entertaining place to drink excellent beer. Next time, we'd probably stick with table pretzels, maybe some dipping cheese. The more substantial entrees were overcooked and very touristy. Kind of a bummer, but not enough to diminish how much fun we had. If you can, go eat downstairs. So much more fun than outside. read more

WTF has happened to Munich and Their Beer gardens. We came here for a week of literally eating and drinking. We are thinking labor is being crapped on and inflation is killing their employees financially. We loved this beer garden. But we came Tuesday night and had beyond horrible service. Our order was screwed up and the waitress rolled her eyes when we asked for an English menu. Hofbrauhaus was just as bad if not worse. It's Saturday night and Munich is completely over run and the people trying to serve our over run. It's beyond sad. We came tonight and got seated immediately. We even got two beers fast. Than out of know where a bunch of drunks got in a fight with our waiter right in front of us. He spent twenty minutes in a stand down while we sat there in 38 degree weather trying to get our order in. There was another server and he completely blew us off. He knew the other waiter was being totally abused and did nothing to help him. I went to get managers and they did nothing to help him either. We left and the most ridiculous thing is they wanted me to pay for the two beers. I told the to go completely F**k themselves. They actually tried and were persistent to pay for the drinks. We did not pay. And when we leave Munich we will never return. Everyone we run in to have the same complaints. Munich. Get your shit together. You are a shell of what you use to be pre covid. There are so many beer gardens in Germany it's difficult to choose just one! This particular one happened to be close to our hotel. They have about four different beers which you can get in the liter or half liter size. There are also radlers as well. I had both the Weiss and the original beer both were good. Everyone usually opts for the regular beer in the liter. I had them both in the half. Our table of four shared a giant pretzel and the sausages, there were like 8 and the sauerkraut was delicious. There is also an option to sit in self service or a wait area. We tried both, in the self serve area just make sure you are grabbing a beer, not an apple juice since they look so similar! First beer garden experience! The space inside can hold several 100s maybe up to 1000+. The interior space has a gorgeous old beer hall with live music for which I think you need reservation in advance and a space to seat 50-70 folk close to the beer taps. Indoor seating is only when it's cold/raining otherwise it is all outdoors. Made two visits without reso in advance the two of us were seated right ways, yummy Bavarian food, English menu, locals outnumbered tourists 10:1 or more, and despite the many questions staff were courteous. They've a beer cellar, we'd not get to it. If you are seated indoors ask abt seeing it at the beginning, but don't be upset if you can't :) Giving 5 stars as a composite of the combined experience in light of the thousands of guests at the venue during two visits. If we lived here will go for the atmosphere, less so for the food and the good but limited beer selection. read more

3.5 stars experience. We didn't have a reservation and there were apparently tables available for folks that didn't have reservations but majority of the staff simply shunned us and said no tables. That was a little disappointing and luckily since we walked so far out we kept trying to find a staff that would try to give us a seating. We ended out sitting outside with heated lamps. Luckily they had English menus and our waitress was very nice and friendly which was missing throughout the restaurants prior to getting seated. I ordered the suckling pig which was pretty good, it's kind of difficult to screw this one up unless of course you overcook it. Luckily they didn't and it was very tender and flavorful. My other friend got the half roasted pig knuckle. It was good but the skin was not crispy enough to their liking. Each was served with a massive potato ball that was very gelatinous in texture. It didn't have much flavor and since it didn't taste too great I ended up working on the other items instead. We got sauerkraut and red cabbage. Those were surprisingly decent; much different from my previous experience in German with sauerkraut where it was super sour and not appealing to eat. The sourness was relatively mild here. I decided to buy the beer glass from them and I was a little saddened that I didn't check carefully enough as one of the two glasses we bought was like faded and missing the gold paint over their logo after we left the restaurant. That was a little bit frustrating as I came all the way there for a old worn out beer glass. Visited Munich back in April. Came here for dinner with my parents, as we had heard that it's famous for being the oldest, still-operating brewery in Munich. Of course, I got a beer (big and bubbly, as it should be). Ordered pork knuckle with potato dumplings and sauerkraut. Food came out quickly, and portions were HUGE! Pork knuckle was super difficult to cut into, as the skin outside was extremely thick and crackling, which also made it hard to eat. Meat was tender and juicy inside, which was good. Potato dumpling was thicky and bready, and the sauerkraut was wonderfully pickled (the sourer, the better!). Aside from the overly-thick pork knuckle, the meal was tasty. What an amazing biergarten! One of the older if not oldest. I was one week off from being in Munich during Oktoberfest in mid-September, but this biergarten was still packed full of people and made for an enjoyable experience! This was my second visit to Augustiner-Keller as I was here exactly one year (to the day!) the year before. The garten is very large which foreshadows the size of everything else you will receive during your visit, the shady trees, the tables, the beer, the food... everything! It feels big and disorganized as you get seated but somehow they make it work and the food came out correctly to the right place and so did the beer. The two times I've gone were with different people and both times I got seated at a larger table with people I didn't know, both times were people from Germany and both times we talked to the Germans during the meal. It was a very friendly experience and I'm not one to start conversations with people I don't know so it was nice that they struck up the conversations with us. So this isn't just a tourist trap. You will get to know locals or people from other parts of Germany. I think I enjoyed my first experience a bit more than my second but only because I went with one of my best friends the first time and this past time with a colleague so a different experience. Both times I got a gigantic glass of beer. I'm really NOT a beer drinker and wasn't anticipating I'd even finish my beer, but the beer is really smooth and easy to drink. Although I nursed one beer for a couple of hours, I ended up finishing my entire glass both times I went. Alright, so here's the deal: the beer garden is idyllic and beautiful, but the food out there is meh at best, and the service is even more annoying. We sat for 30 minutes (no, we weren't in the "regulars" seating area - I travel a lot, I know what's up), and watched the waiter bring beers and food to 3 groups of people who sat down at the tables around us, WAY after we sat down. So, whatevs, we finally got up and went to the self service line. Currywurst was meh, fries were good - pork knuckle was the driest thing I've ever tasted, and they didn't have dark beer outside anywhere that we could find. When we asked the gentleman slinging beer (we asked for "Dunkel" indicating dark), he completely ignored us. I even asked again to be sure he heard us. Didn't even acknowledge us. SO, why 4 stars? I was determined to get some delicious German fare from this place, so I thought: maybe we made a mistake by sitting in the garden. We went back a few nights later, and made certain to be seated inside the restaurant. The experience was like night and day. Service was kind, food was AMAZING. Maybe it was the times I went, which were earlier in the day, but the atmosphere didn't match some of the other bars I frequented, but everyone should make a stop at Augustiner-Keller. The Augustiner barreled Helles beer is incredible, and the place is beautiful. I just didn't feel the energy. I visited just before Oktoberfest, so maybe everyone was home saving their livers for the start of the festival.
