The best beer garden I have been to! The liter of crisp Augustiner Edelstoff that they serve straight from the wooden barrel is truly exquisite. Honestly, the best beer I have had in my life. I live outside of Washington, DC and I still make a roughly 25 minute drive to a specialty beer and wine store to pick up a six pack. The food here is excellent as well. Whether you order some duck, chicken, or bratwurst, you will love what you get. The pretzels are a must, of course. Teamed up with some classic mustard and you have a great treat. The ambience is lovely as well. Sitting in a nice shaded area, you can mingle with fellow customers and meet new people very easily. This was my least favorite Biergarten. The nurnberg sausages and potato dumpling were quite good but I didn't care for the sauerkraut or red cabbage. Both seems to have some type of thickening agent added. Whole peppercorns in the sauerkraut didn't suit my taste. I wish it had been like the sauerkraut I'd had in Regensburg instead. The red cabbage was very sweet and had a taste similar to American bottled sweet barbecue sauce (without the smoke flavoring). How did i not review this place already? Talk about authentic! They still have the old beer celler underneath it where you can drink and eat. The food is what you would expect.. authentic, comforting and just like grandma makes. The beer.. well it was my favorite during Oktoberfest this year.. i dont care what anyone says. Also, it is served by impatient chefs that just have no time to deal with you when you stutter your order. Great thing is that, their impatience is towards everyone and not singling out any individual. This beer garden serves beer by the stein that stays frosty until the last drop. If you're not ready to up your beer game, then this is not for you. If you're cheap drunk, be prepare to be carry out. If you can handle your alcohol, you will leave with a big smile and ready to take the world other than the next morning's hangover. We had the pork chops and a small side spaghetti dish. The flavour is pretty strong and towards the salty side. However, when you have a nice frosty beer to wash it down with, it's all good. We were lucky to snag reservations for a table the second night in Germany. Apparently this beer hall is super popular and fills up quick. Food is hearty but good and beers are huge. Service is decent given how busy it is. I ordered the Knusprige 1/2 Schweinshaxe (I know, you're probably thinking is that a typo but no, that's what it said on the menu lol) and it was huge. This is a great place to visit if you are interested in visiting all the beer gardens in Munich. This restaurant is HUGE, and even has a outdoor seating area as you walk towards the restaurant. It was also very crowded, so reservations are recommended. We were fortunate enough to find seating very easily without reservations, but we came on a early weekday night. Because of the way the tables are set up, be ready to sit with other patrons. But, part of me thinks that's the best part. The outside sitting area was closed when we went because it was quite dark outside, but I imagine it must be amazing during the summer time or during Oktoberfest. We had the schnitzel, the duck special, speatzle, and their beer and all of them were amazing. Possibly the best food we've had during our trip to Germany! I have been here on a (winter) Saturday night and it was quite packed. However, we managed to get a table for three people very quickly despite some line. As all the Augustiner places, beer is great. Food was also very good. What I thought Germany was going to be like: Big-ass beers served by buxom, bouncing women, and warm, soft pretzels as far as the eye could see. What Germany was actually like: The beers were big, sure, but the server women were more trudge-y with a strong side of animosity, and the pretzels, well, they were more crusty than soft and never warm. NEVER. Not a once. This is not my beautiful house. This is not my beautiful wife. This is not the Germany from my dreams. How did I get here? Same as it ever was. SAME AS IT EVER WAS. ---- okay, no. Most of that was just me getting caught up in a Talking Heads song, but you get the picture, I'm sure. It wasn't what I thought it was going to be. It just wasn't what I thought It'd be. I want to say partially because it was during a not-peak winter season and partially because it was after 10 on a Tuesday night and didn't appear to be very hoppin', but our server was in a seriously scheiße-y mood. Like, I think it may be time for her to hang up her lederhosen. We sat down in the lower level cellar-type hall and when she did finally come over she just said '4 Beers?' then ran away and came back 10 minutes later with 4 of the same beer for all of us, then ran away again. Uhm, we kind of wanted to pick our own beer instead of having you just choose it for us, but whatever. We're not going to argue... plus we don't speak that much German so I don't know how much of an argument between us would be lost in translation. There were maybe 4 tables in the cellar on our side but our server woman sure as hell hated all of them. she was huffing and puffing and getting so pissed at the table behind us because none of them were ordering the standard beer that she gave us, so she had to keep running around and grabbing bottles and you know, doing exactly what her job is, but in the most angry way possible. When we finally got her attention to try and order pretzels she sort of brushed us off to the point where we weren't sure if we'd actually get those pretzels... but came those pretzels did. She literally threw them (maybe more like a semi-pro-level lob) on our table while running from the other table that kept ordering bottles. She threw them so hard that the brezen actually bounced up and out of the basket. And of course when we ate the pretzel it was just as disappointing as every other cold, hard pretzel we got in Germany. The entire basket was super old and stiff and hurt your molars to try and tear into. I've had better pretzels sold to me at little league games... but I guess that's just how it is since we had almost the same experience everywhere we went. Prior to visiting Germany, I would've thought that serving old, hard, crusty bad pretzels would be the equivalent of burning an American flag on the White House lawn. Maybe pretzels are just a tourist food so no one really cares about making them on point (meaning soft, warm, and fresh) anymore, which was super sad for me because I'd planned on eating an all pretzel and beer diet for the German portion of our trip, and instead found myself jonesin' for some suburban mall-grade Auntie Anne's. The atmosphere is absolutely the best part. The busier it is, the better, and I def recommend going down to the cellar beer hall as it's a very different and much more casual place. Because we came on an off Tuesday night, I think we missed out on what could have been a super fun time and ended up getting stuck with a really jaded server who had clearly been doing this job for 30 years longer than she should have been. Tips for your visit: 1. Maybe go daytime into early evening when the crowd is a little more jazzed. 2. Drink a ton. Even the dark beers are light and everything goes down like water so this shouldn't be a problem. 3. BYO Food and don't expect much from the pretzels/ 4. Know that you can get more than one type of beer, but only if you have a decent server. 5. Sit in the lower level cellar (as far down as you can go) for optimal ambiance OR if it's mildly nice out, the outside area looks like a ton of fun as well. 6. Cash only. 7. Prost! read more

A day after the last day of Oktoberfest and this place was still jiving. Finding seating...It wasn't really ideal to sit outside at the time due to rain..so the massive courtyard with about 8,700 tables and even more chairs was out of the question. You enter the restaurant, there is a dining there, to the side, to the back, down stairs, around the corner....holy crap, how many nooks and crannies does this place have? The food...I did not think I would be a fan of German cuisine but DA FAUQ was I thinking. OMG, one month of travel and countless food carts and restaurants, and this is the place I constantly think about. Superb food, beer, and service for a good price. I think I spent less than 20 euros for my meal which consisted of a pretzel, a main course, and a large beer. I apologize for not remembering the name of my meal but have a look at my picture and ORDER IT! BTW, it's really easy to get here on public transport. When planning my trip to München, I looked up a lot of places, narrowed things down to realistic chances of visiting them, and then populate things onto a Google map, so that I can have the spatial awareness of where things actually are, in relation to the place(s) I'll be staying at. Along the way, I tend to forget the context of why things are on the map, in spite of my attempts to leave hints or summaries of why I've pinned some places. I pinned Augustiner-Keller to the map and forgot why it was on there, but after getting off at the grand central station, the fiancee and I decided to go there, because it was the brewery closest to where we were. Little did I remember why I had put it on the map, but was reminded that "keller" meant "cellar," so I guess that this was supposed to be an interesting place to check out for drinks. Frankly, given the walk to Augustiner that really feels like you're taken off of the tourist track, and passing by businesses and what I think were schools, I had concerns that there was going to be nothing when we got to the pinned destination. Thankfully, my concerns were quickly washed away when we turned a corner, and then there's this cool looking building with AUGUSTINER in lights written on it, and we knew we were in the right place. Upon entering, a host quickly tells us that there's no seating available, and to go downstairs; no problem, so we head towards the stairs, where the frame is precariously short, and the passageway looks really narrow. Next thing we know, we're going down like 50 stairs and feeling like we're going down 2-3 stories, and then suddenly we're spit out in to a literal dungeon of a cellar that's jam-packed full of large tables, full of people. It's warm as hell down here, and it's funny to imagine the litany of fire codes this would violate in America. Regardless, we're seated immediately, crammed into a bench with two other parties, and we're greeted immediately. As I'd come to really love on this trip, I ordered a dunkel. We weren't particularly hungry at this time, so beer was the only thing we wanted to indulge in on this trip, aside from seeing the mind-blowing experience of being in this cellar. The atmosphere is very lively, very jovial, and everyone around us was having a great time. There was a mix of mostly tourists, but what looked like businesspeople, be they local or not, also enjoying the time in the cellar. The beer was fantastic, and the price wasn't that bad. Overall, the experience of this place is extremely interesting, and probably the most memorable location seen in München. If my travels ever bring me out here again, this is definitely at the top of my list of places to revisit, and if anyone ever asks me for suggestions, it's up there as well. read more

I asked for hot potatoes vs cold potato salad and it wasn't an issue The semi dry Riesling went perfect with the meal. They put a basket of bread/pretzels on your table. I went there once during the day and at night and both times there seemed to be a mix of both tourists and locals drinking and having a great time. EVERYONE seemed happy there! I loved the beer, pretzels, and atmosphere here. This place has a beautiful outdoor area where you can chose either self serving, or regular restaurant seating. The great experience was topped off by the employees wearing traditional German clothing, it's just fun to see. The prices are decent and the employees are friendly. I tried a few of the foods there- sausages, chicken, salad and they were okay but nothing special. After a long day at a rainy Oktoberfest, this was served as a warm, dry place to grab an incredible/authentic German meal. Once we stepped up to the well-known Augustinerkeller, the host told us the upstairs was full. "Go to the cellar, they may have room for you," he said before whispering in my hear, "Next time, you call me. Make a reservation!" As we passed the jolly Germans eating their white sausage, I was initially bummed I didn't make reservations. But thankfully we found a large table in the cellar, which was freaking COOL. Seriously screw the upstairs, the basement dining area of this eatery is where it's at. Unfortunately they'd run out of a few menu items by the time we got here, but what we did eat (and drink!) was wonderful. I can't recommend the white sausage enough, and all the desserts were simply scrumptious. Prices are fair, service is speedy and it's located in the heart of Munich. One of the best spots for "bier und Essen" in Munich. This Augustiner location (there are several in Munich) is a bit outside the center, so there are somewhat fewer tourists and more locals. There is a tram stop a block away or take a U/S bahn and walk a few blocks. The bier garden is HUGE and a must on a nice day. There's plenty of room inside as well with several choices of rooms. Our visit started off on a questionable note with a surly bier-frau who absolutely insisted we take the English menu which has far less options. Things moved in the right direction when we were joined (because all tables are shared) by 4 rowdy German guys who were hosting a bachelor party for one of the group. Our bier-frau was mean to them too, so at least she was democratic about it. We had some great food (Obatzda FTW!!!!), drank a bunch of delicious beer and made some new friends. Our table mates wanted the Mister to join them for the rest of the party, but I was pretty sure I'd never see him again if he went. Fun place, delicious food at good prices, tasty beer. It didn't feel super-touristy. Most of the customers seemed to be Germans in Lederhosen having a Bavarian night out. I liked it enough to eat there twice during a short visit. Notes for Americans: 1. This is a cool place to visit while you are in Munich. It definitely is a tourist spot, which is also good if you need servers that can speak English, and menus that are in English (you might have to ask for one, but they have plenty around). The food is good. It's not the best food in Munich, and on some items the price can go above 20 euros for a small steak and French fries, but the atmosphere makes up for it. It is a cool historical-type building to dine in, and there are plenty of people. If you are going on a Friday or Saturday night, then get reservations. Go on their website at least the morning of. If you don't you will wind up right by the entry (and probably after a decent wait) where they have seating if you didn't get reservations. The first night we didn't, and wound up in this situation. The second night we did get reservations and we went underground (pretty cool) and down a spiral staircase. The underground portion of the building is way better. Plus, you lose cellphone reception down there which forces you to do crazy things like have conversations while you dine. read more

Very cool place. It's really like going back in time when you come here. Met up with a large group of people and we were in the beer caves way below ground. One of the nice things about that was that there wasn't any cell phone service so people were not on their phones! It makes a difference when everyone is actively engaged with the people they are with in person. Beer was good and the food was generally well received. I was fortunate to be sitting with some people who spoke German so they helped negotiate with the waitress. Service was a little surly and it took a long time to get my Obatzda...seriously, everyone else had their food and we had to ask twice for it. Then when they brought it, they brought it with two slices of rye bread instead of a pretzel (which is apparently the usual way). When asked, they said they were out of pretzels. Okay, it was late at night so I'm not going to fuss. Then they did bring a pretzel and it was much better eating it with the pretzel, but then they charged for the pretzel. This venerable establishment features both a nice biergarten outdoors and an indoor beerhall (a fact my wife and I discovered when the biergarten was rained out). Inside has a great, classic look with a large dining hall and stage, and another area that's smaller and exudes warmth. As far as the food, it's quite good. I would say its probably better than the other big, well-known biergarten in town that's probably more known with tourists. In particular, they do a good job on the crispy pork knuckle, as well as good braten and sauerkraut. And, of course, they feature their Augustiner beer, a product of one of the big four brewers in Munich. All in all, I highly recommend it. read more

An astonishing display of bier drinkin'. As one of the oldest beer gardens in Munich, Augustiner-Keller is definitely worth a visit for a traditional German meal or kickin' back a couple of liters (yes, liters!) with your friends! You have the choice of either sitting down in the restaurant area (indoor and outdoor sitting available) or the bier garden which also serves food. We had two of the lagers and an early dinner. This was definitely a much needed break after a day of exploring. All in all, enjoyable food but 5 stars for a true Munich experience and an energetic atmosphere under a canopy of chestnut trees.
