We were seated immediately, even though the place was totally crowded. I had to remind the members of my family that until we got our heads out of the menus, nobody was going to come over and work with us. But as soon as our waiter got to us, everything came quickly after that. I loved my pork knuckle house special with sausages, red cabbage, sauerkraut, and a potato dumpling. My sister had the goulash with spatzle and it was also delicious. Nephew had the cheese spatzle which he devoured. Beer was really good. I had the Dunkel beer for dessert. Noisy, fun, and expect the empty seats at the other side of your table to be filled with another party. If I wasn't just a huge fan of trying completely new places everywhere I go, I would go back and eat there. We've visited Augustiner Klosterwirt two times, once eight years ago and again on our most recent visit. During our visits we opted to just enjoy drinks, and they were happy to have us in. They have a large dining area for those who are enjoying food and beverages with them, and then a smaller drinking area for people, like us, who are just there to enjoy a nice beer or two. The staff was very friendly and attentive on both of our visits. On our latest visit we enjoyed bench seating in one of the window seats and enjoyed Augustiner Dunkel and Helles, both were delicious but our preference is the amazing dunkel. It was fun watching them prepare drinks and get new kegs ready. They go through a lot of beer, and it's all really reasonably priced. The helles was 4.60€ for a half liter and 4.80€ for the dunkel. Their restrooms are also very clean, even with how popular this restaurant is. Don't forget to check out Frauenkirche while you're in the area, and if you visit while the weather is nice they have outdoor seating available. read more

5 star taste, but we suffered from food poisoning after this meal so minus 2 stars for that. We had a late 3pm lunch of the salad and the roasted pork shoulder special. In high likelihood, the raw lettuce in the salad was the cause of gastro-gruel. But looking back on the pork photos, I can't help but imagine that I'd dwell there, too, if I were a bacteria. Besides the nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, body ache, and extreme fatigue, this was my first Bavarian meal and I had a great time! The pork skin was crispy in perfect juxtaposition with the tender meat. The flavorful gravy was not too heavy as I feared. I can't say I would have eaten the potato dumpling if it didn't already automatically come with the plate. The salad was good too. It is extremely difficult to walk in this restaurant right before Oktoberfest. The receptionist was kind enough to tell me to try one hour later and gave a table for five people. We had a fantastic time here. The table was on first floor and at window so we were able to control the window to bring some breeze. Overall the food was good although the roasted pork, one of unique dishes of this restaurant, didn't really impress me. I rank here four stars mainly because of the wonderful ambience here and our courteous waitress. She was extremely responsive and helpful. I had the potato dumpling with pork knuckle, sauerkraut, red cabbage, nurnberger sausage, with apple strudel for desert. Everything came out great. The dumpling and pork in particular were delicious. I went with the 1/2 rear pork knuckle with dark beer gravy, potato dumpling, and coleslaw. The knuckle had a beautiful, crackling skin over tender meat. There isn't a lot of depth to something like this, particularly with a dark beer gravy, but it was rich and satisfying and good eating. Maybe a touch salty. The dumpling is unlike any other dumpling I've ever had - it's soft and chewy in a 'mochi-textured' sort of way. Very nice. The coleslaw is closer to sauerkraut and it is a superior thing. The Date had the wiener schnitzel (breaded escalope of veal) with a side of wild cranberries relish, a pinch of salad, lemon wedge, and potato salad. The schnitzel was excellent - tender and moist, no dry bites to be had. The potato salad was mustard-yellow but it was not overpowering the way mustard potato salads can be. The food here is ok. I had their signature roast pork knuckle in dark beer gravy with a potato dumpling and sauerkraut. The portions are large and the pork knuckle was pretty tasty. The sauerkraut was very salty and overpowering and the dumpling was too chewy for my liking. Service was good and the decor inside is very Bavarian. This is the traditional Bavarian restaurant and most every aspect. They were very accommodating to get us a seat after an afternoon in Munich by offering us a reserved table provided we would be done dining before the reservation time. All of the wait staff was extremely nice and accommodating in the typical German way. I had the Bavarian traditional Schweinshaxe and thought it was the perfect place to try such an authentic Bavarian dish. Recommend going early or having reservations to ensure you get in here. We came here on a recommendation from another website who recommended the pork knuckle. We had never had that before, and it was, as my wife would say "life-changing." The pork skin was nice and crispy and there was some fat to go along with it and the meat was very tender and flavorful. It also came with Schnitzel, sausage and potato dumplings it also came with a nice terrine of wonderful rich dark brown beef gravy. There was another item or two, such as sauerkraut and some other vegetable that I forget right now. We did not finish it because we were too full, and it was such a shame to not be able to. It actually felt wrong to throw it away! And it went very well with the nice beer that I had. our server was Romeo, and he was very polite and accommodating. He helped us with our choice and he spoke English, which was very helpful! We ate outside, which we really enjoy doing. This tucked away restaurant is fantastic. We passed it several times on the way back to our hotel and one night stopped in for dinner. It was pretty busy but we were able to get an outside table. At first we didn't think the very busy servers were very friendly (only because they seemed laser focused, not at all mean) but once our waitress (Iris) found out how fun we were she warmed up to us and was quite funny herself. We had a great time and experience with her. We just started out with drinks first and really studied the menu because they had a lot of great options. The two guys opted for the full dinner meal that had a starter, entree and dessert. The started was the soup with pancake strips. The broth was good but both guys didn't love the soup itself. Their meals and dessert however were 10/10 ( and they were able to switch out the potato dumplings (which we just don't get. Not our favorites) for the potato pancake. Which were excellent!!) I had the Wienerschnitzel and it was amazing. And my other friend had the fish, and she loved it. The dessert was apple strudel which never disappoints in Germany!! I never ventured into the restaurant itself but my friends all did to use the bathroom and they said the inside was really big and was full and hopping like the outside was. and for such a busy night we had great service of drinks and food. I went here during the Octoberfest in Munich. The food and service was great and very friendly. The server spoke very good English and the place was packed. This place has a nice shaded beer garden and also seating inside. The restaurant is right next to the Frauenkirche. They were running Octoberfest specials when I ate there. I had the 1/2 roasted duck with potato dumplings and blaukraut. Everything was very delicious and cooked perfectly. They had a special Octoberfest beer on their menu at it was fabulous. I would definitely recommend this place for a good authentic German meal if your in Munich. read more

This is supposed to be the "non-touristy" Bavarian place in central Munich. Well it is touristy. Staff wearing traditional Bavarian clothing they look uncomfortable in. It's the kind of place they get you in and get you out quickly...unless you stay and drink beer all night. The beer is the highlight. A good selection of their signature beers. The food on the other hand is not good. I tried the pork knuckle. A giant overly salty dry chuck of pork. The outside was ok. But the meat was like eating a shoe. They bring the food out a minute after you order so obviously it is just sitting around in bins waiting to be served. Staff is a bit checked out and not very helpful. The dining experience was absolutely enjoyable. Our group tour was welcome happily by the staff . We were given a selection by our tour leader prior coming to this place. I enjoyed my meal. I had a traditional German favorites- sausages with sauerkraut. The German beer was good, just how I imagined. I enjoyed the dining experience especially with the locals happily singing and chanting during the entire time we were there. The servers were dressed in their traditional outfit. Augustiner Klosterwirt was recommended to us by the hotel desk worker. Overall, it was decent, but nothing really stood out. We tried to make a reservation on the phone, and met with ridiculously long hold times (more than 10 minutes). I opted for an online reservation, and was met with a cryptic, "You only actually have a reservation if you receive a confirmation e-mail from us". After not receiving an e-mail, I called back later in the day and got through to an actual person. He said that the place was full for the next two nights, but that we could walk in. We walked in and were seated right away. The food was decent, but not great or noteworthy. It appeared to cater to tourists who were interested in tasting the Augustiner beer. As a I'm not a beer drinker, I wasn't terribly impressed with Klosterwirt. Klosterwirt is located (literally) right next door to Frauenkirche, at the foot of the two towers. I suspect that most of its patrons stop over before or after visiting there. read more

As part of an Oktoberfest tour we ate breakfast here. We had the boiled white sausages and pretzels along with a half liter of beer. The beer was solid as were the pretzels. The sausages were . . .ok. My wife and her sister disliked the texture. Since they are veal, they also have a bit of an unexpected taste for sausage.I like Augustiner beer so that was a plus, but overall my impression was that the place was just fine, but not amazing. Our tour groups were really the only people in the place so it was hard to know what the atmosphere would be later in the day or at night. Perhaps if I had another chance to visit I would find it to be 5 stars. read more
