This turned out to be our favorite place while visiting Bavaria: great atmosphere in a fantastic building, great food, friendly service, and an authentic menu. We were surprised at how good and seemingly authentic this place is while being across from one of the biggest tourist sites in Old Town, Frauenkirche. We hit it at the right time because we were sat immediately in the downstairs dining area, which is in an old, arched, brick cellar area. The place was crowded and after we sat the line for tables continued to queue. The server was very friendly and helpful and the menus are available in English (and other languages I think). We enjoyed splitting two German classics, sauerbraten and pork knuckle. The sauerbraten was moist, tender enough to come apart with a fork, and had a flavorful sauce that popped with gingerbread spices. The 1/2 pork knuckle was enough for a meal (although the full size is only a few Euros more...) and had crispy skin with tender meat that shredded to the touch. Each was served with a dumpling and a variation of sauerkraut that were delicious. What also makes this our favorite place was having Augustiner on the lines as I very much enjoy their Dunkel and my wife loves their Weiss. When we return to Munich, this place will be on the top of our list to visit again for a meal. read more

First time in Germany, and this was the designated place to eat dinner at with my group tour. The place was nice and big. Lights were dim, there were big screen TVs, and I believe there were two floors. Servers were dressed in the traditional German outfits which I thought was cute. They also gave great customer service! Someone in my group is a vegetarian and they catered to her. I had duck for the first time...and probably the last. It has nothing to do with the way they cooked it, because it looked yummy. The skin was crispy but I didn't like the texture and after taste of the duck. It also came with this weird gooey ball that looked like rice and mashed potato at the same time..wasn't a fan. Thank goodness they gave pretzels because that's what made me full. For drink, I had their beer mixed with lemonade which was awwwwesome. I wanted another :) Dessert was cute, nothing out of the usual. This dinner was part of our tour. It was a big restaurant and service was fast (but this might have been because we were in a tour group). We started out with a pretzel which was the size of the plate (there's Dijon mustard to spread on it, or butter). I got the pork knuckle which was gigantic! The top layer was an extremely crispy thick pork skin which covered a LOT of pork. It was very flavorful and delicious, and the meat was pretty tender. I couldn't finish it because it was just too big. There was also a side bowl of sauerkraut that came with it. There was a dessert that was also amazing- sour cherries, chocolate ice cream, and a chocolate cream pudding. Everything was delicious! read more

Outside seating was great. There were even blankets provided for the chill. Waiter, Philip, spoke perfect English and was very attentive. We had the sausage plate which included 3 different types of sausages and the Wiener schnitzel. Both meals were great! We tried the Hefeweizen and the natural beer that has been brewed the same way since the 1300s. Really good. Apple strudel with vanilla bourbon ice cream was on point and definitely a must try. I enjoyed my visit to Augustiner Klosterwirt, but I can imagine in the summer, it must be totally full of tourists. I visited for a quick dinner since I was in the area and didn't want anything too fancy. I was alone and they managed to squeeze me in before a reservation came to take my table. This wasn't an issue for me, but I can imagine some would feel a bit tight for time. The place was packed - locals and some tourists. It was nice enough to sit outside, but I elected to sit inside since it was getting a bit chilly. I tried a beer 0.5L and the obazda duet dip (also had cream cheese with radish dip). It included brown bread and a pretzel. I really like the obazda and it's a local item that I can't easily have in the US, so I figured why not have cheese dip for dinner.... I thought the food was good, though the pretzel was just ok. I would have expected better from a Munich restaurant, but that's why it's getting 3 stars. It's just ok...beer is good, food is ok and service is..well..service. My server was nice enough to me, but he was not very nice to the English speaking table next to me (by the way - their menu comes in like 5 languages)...he was somewhat rude and ignored them when they asked for help. I have to say the pricing was pretty good - though considering I only had an appetizer and 1 beer, I wouldn't have expected it to be too pricey. P.S. Their front door says they take credit cards, but it's only for bills over 20 EUR! Overall ok, and better than those spots on the main square. read more

A great new addition to Bavarian restaurants in Munich. Located right opposite to Frauenkirche, this place is easy to find. Considering that it is rather new, it is not yet too filled up with tourists. Cousine is Bavarian, the Krustenbraten I had was outstanding. Strangely enough I was a bit annoyed with far too attentive service, there were more waiters than customers and being asked about how everything is, is great. But not every 5 minutes. read more

would love to give 5 stars because we dined in last night and it was amazing, our server was so kind but we returned tonight and went to the downstairs bar and the bartender was so incredibly rude. my german isn't great so i asked if he spoke english, rolled his eyes and asked if we wanted 2 beers, i asked for a glass a wine and he rolled his eyes again. He poured a beer from the tap when the keg kicked and the foam spurted everywhere and on me as well, he proceeded to laugh and sarcastically say sorry. I wanted traditional Bavarian food, and I came here at the recommendation of a local. I was a solo diner and found the service to be prompt and friendly, and the food was excellent. I didn't notice any tourists, mostly locals. Atmosphere is low key, but the indoor seating area was noisy. Stopped in for lunch and this place is deceptively HUGE. Many tables that you share or don't with others...your call. We went for lunch as we were walking around by the Glockenspiel in Munich. I wasn't starving but thought I'd order some soup, asparagus, which was delicious. Keep in mind their asparagus is white in Germany so don't be alarmed. It had massive chunks of thick, white asparagus and loads of flavor, which of course paired nicely with seven pretzels, lol. I can't get used to the sharing of pretzels between tables. It's not very hygienic lol but apparently, they've been doing it for ages so who am I to judge? Of course, it doesn't stop my husband and me from eating far too many of them! Hubby ordered a sausage platter, which he's had about 10 of since we've arrived in Germany. This time the sausages were veal and very small, almost like breakfast sausage size in the US. He loved them though and finished his entire plate along with a bunch of "bier". Service was a bit slow hence the 4 stars. read more

Much less touristy and more locals than many of the beer halls in the old city center. Prices seem to be better as well. You'll hear a lot more German and may run into a bit of a language barrier at times, but personally I preferred it. We ate here on a rainy day. It was the perfect place to enjoy a few beers and wait out the rain! The beer was delicious. I recommend the edelhoff or the dunkel! My sister ordered he smoked salmon dish-- which included oddly enough smoked salmon and hash brown patties. I ordered the spinach dumplings. While I did not care for mine, and she did not care for hers, we traded our meals and really enjoyed them! The decor in here is very pretty and the place is a really cozy spot to hang out with friends and family. As for the beer there's nothing special. When we got our check we realized that they charge 4 euros per glass of tap water!!! Are they out of their mind? Klosterwirt was recommended to me by an American friend who has lived in Garmisch for 40-some-odd years. He is someone you can trust when he says the food is good. And, as usual, he did not disappoint. I wanted a good restaurant to take my mum and dad to. They were visiting from the States, my mum hasn't been in Germany for 5+ years and my father for 30+ years. Needless to say, I wanted to show them what German food was all about. And not just German food, but the atmosphere and ... of course the beer. And what better beer than Augustiner? By far my favorite of the Munich beers. We arrived at 2:00 on a Tuesday afternoon and it was hard to get a table. My friend wasn't kidding when he said, "make a reservation". I would also highly recommend this. Especially if you are more than just two people. I think you would be fine to get a table for two (I was able to do this a month or so later when I went back with another friend), but for any party over 2, I would definitely reserve, regardless of what time you plan to go eat. As the location is right at the Frauenkirche, I am sure the restaurant is use to an international crowd. They were able to furnish my parents with English menus, me with a German one since the translations are sometimes harder to figure out what they are really going to serve you. I talked my father into trying the Schweinshaxn, my mother got her favorite, Wienerschnitzel, and I settled on the Käsespäzle. Augustine Helles all around, of course. Despite the amount of diners, our food came out quite quickly. I think my father was happy I ordered him only a half Schweinshaxn as it was quite a large portion. The Schnitzel was light, crisp and thin as it should be. My Käsespäzle was cheese and creamy and almost too much for me to eat. The Helles was cold and even my dad agreed, Augustiner is the best beer in Munich, if not anywhere. I have been back a few times since and have always had a great experience and meal. The prices are slightly high, but comparable to other similar places around the center of town and by far the best food. read more

Full disclaimer: I did not eat here. I walked inside around 11:30am on 2/25/2023 with my husband and 2 toddlers and our very small travel stroller. I walked up to the hostess and in German said "four." That's about the extent of my German, unfortunately, and the older woman decided to raise her voice and point behind me with my stroller. Ok, there's a little side spot behind me so I pointed there and she yelled what I assume meant "outside" in German. I then motioned and asked in English if I could fold my stroller up instead. She just pointed outside and yelled again at me and then yelled to move out of the way and open the door for the man behind me, so at that point I decided this restaurant was not kid friendly, nor was she a kind person, and we walked out. I was super bummed as I was looking forward to getting my white Bavarian sausages that I love and had read a recommendation for this place, but I can't deal with someone yelling at me a moment after I walk in their doors. I was there for diner one past evening. One of my first diners in Munich actually. I've been told that Augustiner brewery were among the most typical in town. And it is. The place is really nice and big, I really felt the Bavarian mood and enjoyed it a lot. Tasted lots of different beers also, I mean that's what was expected. Great beer and fun atmosphere! We walked from the pedestrian area in Salzburg (probably 20 min walk, mostly along river) and arrived at the brewery. It has a great tree-filled outdoor area, as well as several indoor rooms which really make this gigantic brewery feel more intimate. You grab a mug, rinse it, and hand it over for the brew! A good friend took me here after i had a really bad flight experience. This was my first experience with real German food, so basically relied on her recommendations and the menu was all in German(that's right, no English translation on the side for you out of towners). Don't know if there is one in English if you asked. I ended up ordering a pork shoulder with potato dumpling on the side. That was a huge chunk of meat, and the crispy skin was superb and made me smile. And my friend's fiancée said that was the half portion i ordered, i can't imagine what the full portion looks like. It's just in front of the Frauenkirche, and also with this nice-looking miniature pond immediately outside. The food was disappointing. I say this as someone who grew up in Munich, came back to visit family. My husband got the Würstlplatte with potato salad and sauerkraut- all the sausages were horribly salty and the potato salad, while tasty, most likely not freshly made. My Käsespätzle were very strange, they didn't have the usual gooey consistency with long stringy bits of Swiss cheese but they looked gray-ish and the cheese sauce was not particularly good. The fried onions on top were purchased in bulk for sure. Disappointing! read more

We tried the "main" biergarten from Augustiner but it was full! So we swiched to this smaller restaurant from the same brand, the choice was fortunated. The specialities dish is very tasty and gives an overview of the Bavarian food. This is the place for beers and Haxe, they serve very good one. So please stay away from "standard food" and try their local cuisine. You will enjoy. read more
