Parking was easy to find in the waterfront marina departure point. Raul led the tour, and did a decent job in covering the history of Beaufort and going over both history and architecture of homes in the area, as well as pointing out where some movies were filmed locally. I liked that the tour ventured out of the historic part of town to go to the Beaufort National Cemetery, as it's one of those places people visiting would otherwise likely skip out on. Overall, I'd rate the tour 4 stars, as I didn't like it as much as other Atlantic coastal town tours I've done in the past (Southport, for example), and this tour was a bit more expensive in comparison (but still worth it). I also thought it was a bit much to be told to leave a review by the guide, and also receive messages via both email and text message to review as well.

The tour includes an in depth history of the home and people who lived there and tons of information on the architecture of the buildings. The tour focuses on the lives of the enslaved people who lived and worked on the property. There's an interest exhibit in the basement of the home with letters that provide insight into the lives of the enslaved people. The home and garden are beautiful, and I learned so much!

We met in front of Tommy Condon Irish Pub. There's a convenient parking garage across the street. Our reservation was Sunday at 9:30am. Free street parking on Sunday as long as you don't park in the one hour residential designated streets. Scott was our local tour guide for the historical tour of Charleston. He was on time. Before the tour started he informed everyone of the bathroom situation. On our two hours tour he made sure our group didn't block the narrow sidewalks. The historical tour included stops in front of - * St Philips church * Dock Theater * the Old Slave Mart * the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon * the harbor * the old city wall * Rainbow Row * Nathaniel Russell house The tour was a great way for us to familiarize ourselves with the historical district. Then on our own we picked and chose where we wanted to spend more time. Scott offered places to dine suggestions. We actually went to one he suggested on Sullivan Island. I have been to several different plantations in several different states and was really looking…read moreforward to a great afternoon with my daughters at Hopsewee to include a booked Tea Time and house tour. I purchased the Tea Service ahead of time. Everyone was very friendly but I will say, overly cautious. I had indicated that I have a tree nut allergy on the notes when I booked our reservation and I have never had an establishment refuse me service because of my allergy , but they did. For the life of me I couldn't understand why a slight adjustment couldn't be made to remove almonds from one tiny dish. They also refused to serve one of my daughters for a lactose intolerance note. I assured them it was ok and I had a lactaid for her to take, she'd be fine. I had only included that note because SOME places will offer alternatives. Ultimately, they served us but I had to sign a waiver, never have I ever until now. Most of the tea service items were very good with the exception of the tiny lemon chess pie which was curdled and tasted of rotten eggs, awful. The tea was excellent and the scones and curd and cream were great too. The area where the dining room is, is nothing fancy at all. It was decent but I was truly disappointed as I was hoping for something more extravagant for tea service. The plantation home, while nice was also truly underwhelming. Great history, good tour guide who was very knowledgeable and a great storyteller, but the house was not anywhere near as fancy as others I have visited. I think what was the biggest let down was that this was the first time my daughters were visiting any plantation home and it was not at all what I was hoping for them to see and experience. If I had known what it looked like more ahead of time, I would have chosen another location in the area. Pictures inside the home are not allowed.

This tour wasn't what I thought it would be. I thought we would be going around to various Gullah…read moresites, getting off periodically, and snapping photos. But guide Alphonso Brown had other plans. And that's okay. The two hour tour is totally on the bus. There is no getting off and you're driving around town. It's not all Gullah based. You learn more about Black/African American history overall. But Alphonso is the real gem/lesson here. Alphonso speaks Gullah and he will teach you some too. And even when he is speaking "normally," or in "English," he still has a dialect that is musical and enthralling. For all those complaining about having to work so hard to follow him--get over it! It's LITERALLY the BEST part of this tour! You toddle around town in an air conditioned bus, listening to history, fun stories, and seeing a ton of Charleston architecture (including numbers Philip Simmons gates). Alphonso will tell you where to go, where not to go, what to do, what not to do. He does not mince words. I asked about renowned hero Robert Smalls and he told me Robert Smalls was no hero! He also said George Washington had children (and I've been taught the opposite of that my whole life, so I'm off go down rabbit holes). I loved listening to Mr. Brown's lyrical dialect. Learning about his culture. Learning about Charleston. It was like having a chauffeur take you around to parts of town you wouldn't have thought about visiting. He was fun, energetic. And yes, I bought his book at the gift shop (all bus tours leave from the visitors center), and I had him sign it! This is a unique experience you won't get anywhere else.
