In some ways, Tell City is your typical Indiana river town - small population, friendly people, perfectly fine for a day trip, and a handful of businesses perhaps more known than others. In Tell City, you can visit Tipsaw Lake Recreation Area, the Ohio River Scenic Railway, Birdseye, and Young's Creek. With a little planning, you can also check out Tell City Pretzels or you can, in fact, buy those pretzels locally including at A Taste of Indiana. Tell City Pretzels really had its origin in 1858 when Casper Gloor, a master baker from Switzerland, arrived in the Tell City area. He brought a pretzel recipe with him and the pretzel soon became popular. He passed it down to his baker. The baker handed it down to his own sons. They were hand baked and twisted ever since. In 2009, the family sold Tell City Pretzels to Brad and Sandy Smith who've continued the same recipe and hand-twisting traditions. Tell City Pretzels continues to be devoted to pretzels - pretzel pieces with seven different flavors, cinnamon and sugar pretzel pieces, original whole pretzels (salt or no salt), honey mustard pretzels, chocolate covered pretzels, and various other combinations and packaging options. While the pretzels are easy to find in southwest Indiana, you can also get them at A Taste of Indiana, Market District in Carmel, Sullivan Hardware at 70th and Keystone, and a handful of out of state options plus through the Tell City Pretzels website. While the recipe remains a secret to this day, you can arrange for a tour when in the Tell City area. My favorite? The garlic pretzels. I'm a fan of garlic anyway, but their garlic pretzels are simply amazing. There are lots of items on display almost like a small museum. Don't forget the gift shop. I was thrilled. Obviously popular, the clientele was experienced, but diverse. While I did not hear German discussion, I might have. Next to the restaurant is a building that is their catering. It was as big as the restaurant. Walking in, the sign said to seat yourself. Sometimes that means a delay in a server finding you. Nay, nay. She was prompt, attentive and knowledgeable. She was great. Because I scanned the menu ahead of time, I knew that I wanted the trio of wursts. They were among the best I've had. My server talked me into the potato salad. It was great. Along with the wursts, I ordered a salad and completely enjoyed their house made blue cheese dressing. The beer menu had Spaten Special. Spaten is a rare treat for and this is the first time I have even enjoyed it on tap. When I was leaving, I was able to buy a six pack of harder to find German beers. My adult son loves German beer and did not even recognize one I brought that he loved. Restraining myself, I made only modest purchases in the gift shop. This will not be true next visit. As far as the museum aspect, there are many displays. Down one wall are many car models, train models, liquor decanters and numerous other German items. I went with four beers tasters: Darkness on the Edge of Town milf. Oops I mean mild! The mild was that with a nice malty flavor. Arriba Arriba deep south lager is pretty non-offensive. Easy drinking and great in a hot day like today. Don Gets to Name It Amber had a flavor to it that was reminiscent of allspice. I'm not sure it was an addition or if it was the yeast. It was pretty pronounced though. SWPFTD would be pleased with this one. Holdens Hangover rye IPA was a good IPA. I got the rye flavor out of it which I like. I enjoyed the beers and the people at this little brewery.
