Previously family and I have attended some great German restaurants in the motif of a beer hall. This is not that. It is more of an inn. There are lots of items on display almost like a small museum. Don't forget the gift shop. I was thrilled. Obviously popular, the clientele was experienced, but diverse. While I did not hear German discussion, I might have. Next to the restaurant is a building that is their catering. It was as big as the restaurant. Walking in, the sign said to seat yourself. Sometimes that means a delay in a server finding you. Nay, nay. She was prompt, attentive and knowledgeable. She was great. Because I scanned the menu ahead of time, I knew that I wanted the trio of wursts. They were among the best I've had. My server talked me into the potato salad. It was great. Along with the wursts, I ordered a salad and completely enjoyed their house made blue cheese dressing. The beer menu had Spaten Special. Spaten is a rare treat for and this is the first time I have even enjoyed it on tap. When I was leaving, I was able to buy a six pack of harder to find German beers. My adult son loves German beer and did not even recognize one I brought that he loved. Restraining myself, I made only modest purchases in the gift shop. This will not be true next visit. As far as the museum aspect, there are many displays. Down one wall are many car models, train models, liquor decanters and numerous other German items. I sneaked into a closed dining room with great displays of stein and wine history. A few times a year, I head from TN to IN. I will make this a two day stop. Lots of nostalgia here for me, as my family always loved to make the hour-ish trek here when I was a kid...and I feel like it's held up well to those memories after a recent visit when I was in the area. Atmosphere is fun, it really embraces the German decor (saw a review or too calling it kitschy, in a good way, which I think is a fair description). Service is friendly and attentive (and in the costumed German garb to keep with the themes). Lots of classic German dishes (several schnitzel varieties, brats, spatzel, etc.). I won't say anything I've had over the years blows me away, but haven't had a bad choice either. The Wiener schnitzel I had most recently was tender and tasty, with a perfectly fried batter, and the German fries were nicely crisped on the exterior and beautifully seasoned. Good beer selection (including some brewed for the restaurant), reasonable wine list...love that you can go all out and have your beer in the classic giant boot! Kitschy, yes, but despite that the food is genuinely spectacular. Bratwurst was super flavorful and cooked perfectly with a caramelized outside, a good snap, and a moist inside. The pretzel bun was heated appropriately and had the right amount of flavor. The optional spicy mustard is really powerful. My only possible complaint would be that the spatzle were a bit on the soggy side, perhaps overcooked. That said, the spatzle also come with an incredible sauerbraten gravy. My only regret, really, is not having had dessert. read more

We drove from Louisville to have dinner here. We have been a number of times. The service and wait staff are always so friendly and do a tremendous job. Dressed in German style clothing. It really sets the mood. We typically always order the Jager schnitzel, which is incredible. It comes with a salad and German fries plus an extra side. Always more than we can eat, so this time we brought a cooler so we could bring our leftovers home. Once again, the service and the food did not disappoint. Decided for the first time in a long time to share a dessert and had their Butterfinger cheesecake which was out of this world. Highly recommend. Our waitress Lyn was incredible. Salad bar ($6. with entree), with soups and light desserts, then can order from menu for an entree or ample choices on salad bar alone. We had the giant pretzel with cheese sauce. The pretzel was tasty, but the cheese sauce was pretty bland. We had dinner salads that were really big & fresh. My husband had goolash for dinner & enjoyed it alot. I had shrimp skewers and a loaded baked potato. The shrimp were good, but a bit chewy. The potato was kinda hard to eat bc it had been broiled & the cheese was a bit browned. Even though we were really full, we were encouraged to try the carrot cake. Absolute gem!!! Miss salad bars? They have one loaded with brilliant options. Classics with some special self serve ingredients and premade salads. Alongside, 2 soups homemade soups, bread, and the most delicious apple butter. Use the salad bar as a meal or add on. I suggest you add on because you don't want to miss out on their entrees. All the German favorites +++ Everyone in the family will have multiple choices to make it difficult to decide what to order. We shared the German tenderloin which comes with bacon and cheese. The bun is grilled and buttery with a design branded onto the bun. Such a classy touch! The tenderloin was perfect! The best I have ever had. We opted for a side of German potatoes (fried with onions) and they transported me back in time to Grandma's house. The staff were kind, courteous, and attentive. Prices are worth the quality and quantity of food you receive. Make sure to visit their general store for gifts, accessories, wine, and German imports. We were celebrating a big birthday today. So we went to one of our favorite German restaurants. And they did not disappoint. The soups were delicious and different from any other restaurant. Both were so good we want to go back next time they have them on the menu. We were told that one of the cooks makes these items and we sent out approval to her for her wonderful soup. Our server, Chris, was fabulous! She came to work there for an extra income for her family and is still there! And boy are we glad she is because she is a wonderful server. Our water and pop glasses were NEVER empty and the timing of our food was perfect. The restaurant is the same authentic German style restaurant. And the server's authentic dress is very nice to complete our dining experience. We can't wait until we can visit again!!! read more

Okay, so I'm making my way through a Midwestern town and I stumble across a Swiss looking Chalet.... How could I NOT stop? Giant pretzels? I'd never seen a chilled metal salad plate before! And the service??! Of course, how could it be anything but top notch from someone wearing costume right out of the Bavarian Alps? I went for the seafood buffet, crab legs were only 5 dollars extra which isn't bad but they weren't hot but did taste ok. sides were good but the seafood was under seasoned. My favorite part of this restaurant is their salad buffet it's huge and always very good and fresh. I had the chocolate crème pie which can easily serve 2 people. Place is very cool to walk around and take in with all the German decor and history on the walls. Our waitress was awesome even though they were packed we never waited on anything. Schnitzelbank is worth pulling off the interstate for! A lovely German restaurant with a fun gift shop is a recipe for leaving stuffed and happy. All the German standards are on their menu along with a salad bar that is worth adding to your meal if only for the delicious bread. The food did have its hits and misses but was overall pretty good for its location. The mustard they provided is the best I've ever had and worth driving there for. Kraut balls we're phenomenal! Atmosphere is very family oriented and quaint. Not super fancy. Service was good. I personally had the filet and it is a lil overpriced. It's about like a sirloin a lil chewy and not as moist as most filet cuts usually are. It was good, but not great or priced where I would have to have that one again. I know, I know, I came to a German restaurant and had steak, what did I expect lol. Desserts were impressive and massive! We had the Black Forest cake and one slice was like 1/2 a cake! My wife and I stopped for our 28th anniversary meal. First off the restaurant is charming. We can definitely see the German influence as soon as you pull in the parking lot. We were greeted well and taken to our table quickly. The food was exceptional. There was nothing that we had that we did not like. It was authentic, it was delicious, and if it was closer to me, I would visit often. I enjoyed the three meat sampler in which everything was perfect from the German potatoes to the dishes I have no idea how to spell. We ended our day with German chocolate pie. If you go to Jasper, IN to spend any time at all, make time to go to Schnitzelbank. To the locals, it's known as "the Schnitz"! The have a variety of American food like chicken tenders, hamburgers, steaks, pork chops, etc. There's also a comprehensive list of traditional German dishes. I was so looking forward to having dinner there on Saturday, and left extremely disappointed. We were a party of four and 2 of us ordered the sauerbraten. It was very tough and dry. When you crave German food and your grandma isn't alive, this is a great substitute. We stopped in for early lunch on a Saturday, it was pretty busy but we found a table for 5. Very helpful server who didn't pressure us and did a great job explaining things to our kids. The food is amazing, sizes are huge, and think about splitting. Ate here this evening. We had a waitress that was very prompt. She got our drinks quickly. The ambience was like you are in a different place. The ambiance was cool. The wife and I drove up because we just like to eat here at least once a year. It's about an hour and a half drive from home. But no problem for some good eats. It was an excellent late lunch. I stopped in early on a Wednesday for lunch. I got the salad bar and it was delicious! The salad bar had salad fixings, soup, and bread. The plates were kept cold to help keep the salad fresh. I wish there was a split option for the front staff and the back. We have a party of 4 and a toddler who needs a high chair. The hostess puts us at a table for 4 seats. Where are we supposed to put the high chair: the attitude was the equivalent as the grinch from the grinch who stole Christmas; extremely rude and nasty. She's like this is what we do when we passed two tables and other high chairs got a actual space and this hostess is trying to have my child be shoved in one corner of a tiny table when clearly it is not done for other kids. It is not busy and there were plenty of other space options. Also the cleanliness of the salad bar was something to left to be desired this time. As we were headed to St Louis on vacation, we saw a billboard for this authentic German restaurant, Schnitzelbank. When we stopped at the rest area around the exit for Dale, Indiana, they had pamphlets for Schnitzelbank. So, they've put some money into advertising. We decided to take the eighteen-mile drive to this restaurant in Jasper, IN, on the way back home. We parked in the restaurant's back lot, and we encountered two people walking out. They told my wife that we didn't need our masks. We walked inside, and after noticing it was seat yourself arrangements. Well, my first thought was, "I have to use the restroom." We walked around and discovered that the restrooms were by their gift shop. The entire time we walked around the restaurant, nobody spoke to us. The restaurant wasn't overly busy at 4:45 PM on a Monday, and we noticed that many of the tables still needed to be cleaned (i.e., dirty dishes, dirty glasses, etc.) from the previous dinners. Suddenly, a dinner spoke to the wife, "Good luck finding a table; every one of them is dirty." Her husband nodded in agreement. I told the wife that it was time to make our exit. As we were getting ready to walk out, surprisingly, we located a table across from the bar that their staff had recently cleaned. We guestimate that we sat there for about fifteen to twenty minutes before we gave up and decided to drive back to I64 and on towards Louisville, where we decided to eat at a LongHorn. This place was great! Service was on point, ambiance wfoodas fun and full of culture, and the was delicious. they have options ranging from deep German roots to 100% American. Kids choices are on par with other restaurants. I ordered the sampler and was very happy. It was perfect for trying small bites of several dishes and I shared it amongst my kiddo and husband.
