This place is so cute inside and out. They offer authentic German cuisine and the wait staff are dressed in traditional clothing. It has a very homey feel . The prices are reasonable and the portion's are decent size. I had noodles with sausage ( not sure the name) my husband tried the schnitzel with a mushroom gravy served with noodles and a large German beer. We were both unable to finish our meal and took left overs home that were delicious the second time too. This is a fun place to go to when visiting French Lick, we'll be back. read more

'Ok' German food which is very heavy on the meat and potato options. I really wish there were more vegetables to choose from like cucumber salad or brussel sprouts. The decor has a 'grandma house' feel to it. A bit cluttered but fun to look at. The service was good but we also were there on a slower day and there seemed to be only one server for the entire restaurant (we were there for early lunch on a weekday in October). The gravy on our pork tenderloin honestly tasted like a dry mix packet of gravy from the grocery store. Maybe it was homemade but it had that taste to me. One thing I absolutely cannot overlook at any restaurant is a sticky floor. When I walk and I have to consciously remove the sole of my shoe from the floor, I cringe. It means they likely did clean the floor but not good enough. Also I wish the entire menu used German instead of anglicized names for dishes. So I never been there before and me and the girlfriend went there and had the two person sampler. We literally had to share three sausages and we each got one pork tenderloin. For $25 each person and the cost of a sausage I expect at least one sausage for each of us. I literally had to stop and get food on the way home because I've never spent over $50 for dinner and had to buy food on the way home. We were here for lunch and had potato pancakes and one of their daily specials, a Polish sausage sandwich. the potato pancakes tasted homemade and were OK but the sausage was cut up into thin strips instead of being served intact like most sausages. We had a change of plan because we didn't realize our preferred restaurant was in a different town so we decided to stay in town and see what it had to offer. We had this place recommended by somebody at work. When we first entered on a Thursday night it was not that busy. The maître D/front of the house did not seem too friendly and it took a while for us to get seated. Our server on the other hand was super friendly and nice. We ended up, selecting the buffet option for two, which gave us a variety of different sausages, German sides, and potato/noodle dishes. I will preface my review, saying that I have never been to Germany before to eat authentic German food. I have tried other German restaurants in United States. I found the sausages to be above average. The pork schnitzel was OK. The meatball was super dry unfortunately. The German noodles tasted like gnocchi and it was not that good. The other sides were on par. I can't say that this is the best German meal I've ever had in comparison to other places I've been. What a cute little German restaurant within walking distance of the French Lick Hotel! It feels like you're walking into someone's home. The kind waitress explained the menu to us, and my friend and I opted for the German platter for two. It was PLENTY of food, and it's a bummer we couldn't take it with us in to go boxes, because everything was delicious. Dining options are limited in the area, and I'd recommend checking this out. Took my wife out to our favorite German restaurant. Drove over an hour to get here,love this part of the country. Ordered the Grosse plate as usual for her birthday. Yummy. Afterwards she had the carrot cake which she has ordered many times.(not good today). Sent the cake back for being undercooked. Asked to have cost of it removed from our bill. Son in law manager (Michael Davenport) refused and argued the desert was good. Server had mentioned business was slow and not to expect a refund prior to manager's meeting us at table. This is the second time our group has eaten at German Cafe. I'd say you either love it or hate it. Those in the group that love it outvoted those that don't. Both times we ordered the sampler platter (grosse) which I believe means large, and it is. You should ask how it works. They charge by the person and I think each even interval of people adds more meats. People really like the sausage and brats and also the sides. I personally don't think the snitzel has a lot of flavor. This time I ordered the entree of goulash. It is very good - good flavor and the beef is very tender. I also think the meatballs are good. Kids didn't seem to like the hot dogs (which looked like the knockwurst to me. The chicken nuggets are the cheap mystery meat version. The kids that ate off the platter liked it. read more

Cute German restaurant in downtown French Lick. They had a sign in the door they stated they were short staffed, so please be patient. I took a seat at the bar and waited a bit for service, but understood and wasn't put off. The same person was bartending, hosting, and serving and she was crushing it. I ordered a German beer, Hefe Dunkel which was the perfect pairing for my lunch. I ordered a combo of the rahmschnitzel and zweibelschnitzel. It was soooo good. Definitely check this place out. Such an awesome meal! If you enjoy great German food, you have to stop in German Cafe. The atmosphere felt like I was walking into my grandma's house, so welcoming. Our waitress was very attentive and kind. We had four adults and two kids, and everyone loved their meal. The four adults shared the Grosse Platte, it was outstanding!!! Where would 35 Porsche club members go for an authentic German meal in French Lick? Why here of course! The Porsche regional club presidents gathered together a group of foodies and we paraded into this warmly inviting eatery. We all were greeted promptly, seated comfortably in a room above the main floors and had our drink orders taken and then served promptly by the swarm of bustling wait staff people. Nice! Because this was a special request dinner, the restaurant is not usually open on Monday, to speed food service up, they served each table family style. Name a yummy German dish and it was generously served on each table. I fell in love with the perfectly grilled bratwursts and had a double helping. Their red cabbage, a tangy veggie my wife and mother in law cook with chef like perfection, was tastier than the dish served at my home! Double nice! Despite the challenge of satisfying the tastes of a large group of German food knowledgeable club members, the staff, lead by Ramona and her husband in the kitchen, these folks delivered a tour-de-force experience, receiving applause from the appreciative and fully fed diners. Sometimes awarding five stars is a stretch for some food experiences. You make adjustments for service in a very crowded place or be less critical if you feel sympathy for a missed order by a busy waiter. German Café is going to be your go-to for Deutsch essen in French Lick. And, probably for the couple of counties around it. They've jumped into the Bavarian family restaurant and the result is a little mixed. There are certainly the classic southern German staples: the flags, the framed photos, the server's uniforms and so on. Those are mixed with more personal effects like the names of all of their grandchildren above the entrance to the bar and the framed diploma with a job-seeker's elevator pitch next to the hostess stand. It's a mix! The restaurant itself is larger than it appears and is broken up nicely so as not to forgo intimacy for smaller groups. Like the décor, the food was a mixed bag. The fare is all traditional. The results weren't totally consistent though, ranging from delicious schnitzel to overcooked beef in the goulash. But hey, put some gravy on the spaetzle and dig in! Do make sure to get the pretzels and beer cheese, though because that was AMAZING! The beer selection is decent with primarily local iterations of German traditional brews. You won't find a ton of imports, but they're great for washing down a large meal. Service was great, particularly how thinly our server was stretched. We've eaten here several times, usually once or twice a year when visiting French Lick. The place is charming. It can be loud and the wait staff can be more casual and friendly than a chain restaurant, where the staff has to stay on script. The last two visits, once a year for the past two years, some of the food was cold. Both times it was the meatballs and the sides (noodles, mashed potatoes, fried potatoes, cabbage). I really want this place to succeed, and there are so few places like this that are a true labor of love. They've got to get the kitchen under control, though.
