This is my favorite place to have lunch in Lawrence. The staff is lovely, the owner is behind the counter and the ingredients are superb. I particularly recommend the Reuben, made with the finest bread and cheese, and the local sauerkraut is just the best sauerkraut I've ever tasted. And I'm a big fan of sauerkraut. Highest marks! Very lovely people working here! Super nice and so friendly! I went here occasionally during my time at KU and remembered this place to meet up a friend. I'm so happy it has remained open, especially with the past couple of years. The sandwiches are simply but comforting. I was on a sandwich craving and this place delivered. I got the turkey club sandwich hot and it was great. I don't feel too entirely full when I eat their sandwiches and I'm okay with that. Definitely try their sandwiches if you're ever in Lawrence. The cake was one of the best I've had anywhere, the sandwich was extremely mediocre and almost inedible. For $10 I got a chicken salad sandwich with red onion, it normally comes with lettuce and tomato and I wanted that too, but wasn't even asked when I requested they add red onion. Didn't realize it was literally just a chicken salad and onion sandwich til I was already back on the interstate. Also, there was hardly any chicken salad, didn't reach to the crust, and it was bland. The bread was pretty good but that's irrelevant given i paid $10 and couldn't even taste the chicken salad. read more

All right, I feel the need to update my review after several trips here. I am going to knock it down a star, but that still means I enjoy it. The sandwich you choose really makes a difference here. The reuben is still, in my mind, very excellent. I should have just stuck to that - it's probably 4-5 stars. I have also had the club sandwich which is 2-3 stars. For $7 (with tax), you don't get much in the terms of meat or cheese. It's tasty, but not excellent. So it just doesn't seem to have the greatness that its price should warrant. I will keep going here from time to time as money allows, but will need to learn exactly what sandwiches to stick to. Some are great, some are just "meh". The service is still friendly, and the store is clean and nice. The little shop in the back has some neat stuff, but I still have not bought anything to explore how much I like it. Great food and great people! Terrific sandwiches and other freshly made food. As a Lawrence resident, I think it's very important to support our local businesses, especially when they have such wonderful products. Because of the flooding this summer, Clinton Reservoir has been closed, and Auntie Em's, as well other nearby businesses, have lost what is normally their best customer months, with many people coming to Clinton then. Local businesses like Auntie Em's help make Lawrence great. read more

I've had a number of different sandwiches here over the years and they're always fresh and delicious, and you get the added bonus of a warm smile and lots of good energy from the lovely family that owns the shop. The Reuben sandwich here should be something everyone in town tries at least once, it's that good. Thick slices of soft, fresh marbled rye, a generous helping of amazingly flavorful and juicy corned beef, an equal portion of tart, crunchy sauerkraut (not the stinky over-fermented kind from a jar, this tastes homemade and more like a deliciously tart and perfectly textured slaw), a gentle slather of dressing, and a thick slice of unbelievably good cheese melting the whole thing together. This is probably Lawrence's best sandwich. read more

A simply phenomenal deli. High quality meats and cheese, incredibly kind staff, and a wide selection are what earns this place 5 stars in my opinion. Last time I was here I counted 16 different options for meat, 10 different cheese offerings, 9 different dressings, 8 different veggies, & 6 different bread options for your sandwich. From these you may make any combination of sandwich you may desire. Be sure to try the Lebanon Bologna, very very tasty. If you are not feeling adventurous enough to make your own creation you may also order 9 different classic sandwiches. As mentioned by others the Rueben is indeed very good but my favorite is the toasted On certain occasions they have excellent additional food offerings as well. Saturday mornings be sure to stop in for the biscuits and gravy--you will not be disappointed. Also on select Friday's they also offer smoked salmon which is fantastic. I buy some, take it home, mix with cream cheese and pickled jalapeños and put on crackers. Very tasty to be certain! The owners are such great people who remember me every time I walk in the door and always are curious to catch up and see how I have been. Highly highly recommend. read more

One of the best BLT's I've ever had, they had a wonderful selection of toppings. Makes a great lunch to bring with you if you're fishing.

I LOVE this place. They have really terrific sandwiches (house specialities, or build your own); absolutely the best meat I've tasted in a long time. The owner told me they get their products from an Amish farm in Iowa, that she had toured the farm personally before deciding on them as her supplier. The shop is on the small side (fits about ten customers comfortably), very clean (take note, Yello Sub), cozy, the service is friendly and fast. It is a family owned business, and they are knowledgeable and professional. They stock other Amish products, from floral lotion to jams (do yourself a favor and buy one of the jams, they are so. good.) to salsa and pickles and gourmet popcorn. Everything is reasonably priced, and they even sell meat and cheese by by the ounce or pound, for about the same price as Hyvee (and unlike Hyvee, they don't pre-slice the meat and cheese, keeping it fresh as possible). I've had the turkey sandwich, the reuben, and some handmade potato salad during three different visits, and it was all remarkably good food. The reuben threw me off at first, because it wasn't drippy and overstuffed, but that didn't matter after I tasted the best pastrami outside of Nyc. I wish it came with a bit more sauerkraut and dressing, but the meat is such a showstopper that it worked fine without it. I've been looking for a good deli for a year now; you can't imagine how happy I am to find such a great place, right in Lawrence. read more

I had lunch today. What a cute down home little deli. I had the turkey club sandwich and tomato soup. The sandwich was good. The bacon was plentiful and the wheatberry bread was moist and delicious. The tomato soup had some basil and chunks of tomato in it. Really tasty. My friend had the chicken noodle soup which had great thickness. I will definitely be back! read more

My fiancée and I decided to try Auntie Em's Deli & Bakery for lunch on my day off. You can order one of their specials or build your own. I chose to build a monster of a sammy, although the hot ham and cheese special with a cup of tomato basil soup sounded wondrously delicious. On my sandwich checklist, off the bone ham, smoked turkey, pastrami, and hard salami were my meats of choice. Lacey swiss, horseradish cheddar, and colby rounded out my cheese selection, and I topped her off (yes, this sandwich had personality) with mayo, mustard, red onion, and ground horseradish. Thick cut slices of fresh wheat bread held it all together, and upon delivery it measured in at well over 4 inches tall. I had just created my own personal Dagwood's Dream. None of that thin-cut deli stuff from the grocery store, either. The balance of flavors I had created between the onion, horseradish, mustard, and meats and cheeses really drove my taste buds wild. This is in my top 5 deli sandwiches of all time. In addition to selling the meats and cheeses for their the mouth-watering sandwiches, this unique little shop also sells other Amish foods. Jellies, jams, pickled / canned goods, chocolates, fudges, honey, molasses, and chili starters are the first that come to mind. Beautifully hand-made holiday gift baskets of these same foods line the front of the shop, where eager holiday shoppers snatch them up quickly. As I paid for this inexpensive delight, I grabbed a bag of Troyer's beef jerky. Hands down the best jerky I've ever had, and a perfect ending to this most glorious of simple meals. This family owned and operated business really found a way into my soul both through the heart-warmingly friendly staff and the wholesome, tasty goods they sell. I've only been here once, but my meal of a reuben and chicken-noodle soup was worth a good review. I'm pretty much repeating what other people said- everything was fresh, homemade, and high quality. The bread was really soft. At first I was a little skeptical because the reuben wasn't dripping with sauce and sauerkraut and melted cheese, but it had so much more flavor than some I've had in the past that look promisingly juicy and delicious but turned out to be all looks and cheap ingredients. The soup was good too. It had the big fat homemade noodles floating around in fresh, flavorful broth. They also have a store towards the back of the restaurant where they had some more homemade foods available for purchase, books, and probably some other handmade Amish thangs. I'd really like to go back soon. Mostly because I read that they have really good chocolate milk. read more
