Loved it didn't contain nuts since I was serving to guests and wasn't aware of any allergies. Was a little disappointed with the hot cross buns. They tasted amazing and were a hit, but the traditional cross on top wasn't present. Also was baked in a round container instead of the advertised and traditional rectangle. Staff was so nice from the ordering, payment and pick up. Pick up was at the sisters store Taylor's donuts which tempted me with the apple fritters and amazing smells. read more

We were in the area and dropped into the Barker. Oh my word, are we so glad we did! We don't get out much so we got one of everything to take home. Every single pastries and the cookie was delectable! I highly recommend this place. What you should know..this is a small establishment it has a small parking lot and limited seating. Recommended by museum curators, I visited 1900 Barker for a quick breakfast before one of the most important meetings on a business trip to Lawrence. WOW -the light and flaky layers in croissant were amazing, followed by a hint of sweetness. I ended up with having 2 full croissants and ordered 8 extra for breakout after the meeting. The spicy chicken sandwich was also very good. It is somehow similar to Cx-Fx-A sandwich(sorry for comparison but that's my immediate reaction when I had a bite), but less salty and more crunch. The spiciness of brewed coffee was not my favorite. My colleague also ordered the same, but with milk, made the same comments and did not finish it. Not sure if it was just specific type of beans used for brewing or something else, but as a coffee lover, it was a disappointment. When I revisit Lawrence, I will definitely stop by 1900 Barker for another croissant and spicy chicken sandwich. read more

We were visiting from Kansas City. I've increasingly become an espresso snob and I have been to most of the highly rated roasters in KC. I had a flat white and it was phenomenal. Just as good if not better than anything else I have had. The pastries are also unbelievably good. Many times we go to a place with high reviews and our expectations are let down after we experience it. Barker Bakery was the opposite. It exceeded my expectations and only makes me sad that it is an hour away. I will make it a point to visit Barker's whenever I am in the area. Don't let the humble premises fool you. It's been almost 2 years since I've left Lawrence for San Diego. I knew it wouldn't be easy to find a bakery with bread and croissants that compare well, but I didn't think it would be this difficult! I've tried many bakeries between San Diego to LA since arriving, including some of the most famous in US such as Tartine, Proof, La Brea (what a disappointment!), and of course, the #1 rated bakery in all of US on Yelp right now, Izola in downtown San Diego. Tartine & Izola are close, but... 1) Cinnamon raisin walnut for the win on sour doughs 2) Twice baked almond frangipane is the bomb 3) That bloody, freakingly awesome breakfast sandwich that no establishment has ever come close too... I was recently in Lawrence to visit my son who attends KU. I've been craving bakery quality dishes and live in a very small town that just doesn't have any good options. This place BLEW ME AWAY. I tried the lemon custard croissants, cherry danishes, and salted chocolate chip cookies. Everything was so buttery, flaky, salty, sweet!! The perfect mix. Their delicate laminated pastries are as good as anything I've ever tried and even as good as the little shop in Paris that has been the object of my affections since I visited many, many years ago. There's really no seating, it's a tiny space with some chair rails so don't go expecting a sit down experience. But do go expecting to taste the best pastries you've ever had! (Oh small side note, bathroom was pristine and so nice!) Apple Maps doesn't take you to the right location but google maps does. read more

We arrived here and noticed that all items but the smoked cheese focaccia bread that we bought and this enormous Italian sandwich were gone. The man behind the counter apologized. He was nice, but this was on us for arriving just about 40 min. before they would close, and on a Saturday no less. I know that since it's the day before Easter(Ostara) that it too wasn't surprising that they ran out quickly, and according to the gentleman, they ran out by around noon. We tasted the focaccia bread later, and to be honest I could have left without it. It cost $12, and it didn't taste better than a focaccia from Price Chopper, which would have cost a lot less. I may have to try other items next time, but it depends on the cost. The only downside to this place was that the inside wasn't anything like what was pictured on Yelp. I believe at one time, maybe before the pandemic, they had a seating area. It mostly seems to be grab and go. It is located in an older neighborhood, although the pictures made me assume it was situated on a bigger lot. Also, just as we drove up, the place appeared closed. The outside could use some TLC, just because aspects about it seemed that way. read more

I took one bite of my morning croissant and my eyes closed and I could not believe the light crunch, the buttery flavor and the overall composition of this perfect pastry. Bliss, absolute bliss. The staff friendly. Very clean kitchen smelling lightly of bleach and all foods sealed in Cambro containers. I watched the chef build something with fresh veggies and more. Let's talk about my London Fog. They did not have it on the menu so I ordered it the way I like it. Foam so dense you could use it as a pillow. Flavorful tea with LIGHT syrup - perfect. Will I return? I plan on heading back tomorrow and the next day until I leave. I feel like I've never really experienced a French croissant until today. Go figure! As a foodie and seasoned world traveler, I must proclaim that these were the best baked goods and breakfast sandwiches I have ever had in my life. The food is good. The service is terrible As a neurodivergent person I like to order ahead so I don't have to interact with people because those things are painful for me. The system that Barker has set up forces me to interact with people while there. If I wanted to be forced into an interaction with employees and wait on my phone because it's never ready when you get there I would just order in store. I literally stopped ordering warmed products from the store so I could just show up grab my pastry and leave. That's how uncomfortable having to speak to the employees makes me a neurodivergent person. The practice of forcing me to have to speak to your employees is ableist. You have zero consideration of why someone would order ahead to avoid having extremely uncomfortable experiences in their days. I actually stopped coming after the warmed pastries incident because having to speak to the person to get that information was so uncomfortable for me. A must stop in Lawrence for quality coffee and delicious pastries! One downside is the parking situation but I just park on the street. Sometimes on a Saturday morning, this place gets super busy so I enjoy going midweek before or after lunch. There's only about 20 seats inside but I think there's a few seats outside. It's also a great place to grab and go. I went here yesterday and overheard the owner mention he has been very busy collecting Thanksgiving orders for the past 30 hours. I witnessed the lunch rush and some customers with attitudes and the staff handled everything well! The staff is amazingly chill which made the environment a welcoming place that I stayed there for 2 hours doing homework. During those 2 hours I purchased a cappuccino that came with a beautiful latte art. For the pastry I had their seasonal pumpkin spice croissant that screamed punk rock . Both were delicious an around $10. For my second hour I got a cold brew with cashew milk. There's very few places in Lawrence that offer cashew milk which is very nice and I had a salami pizza. To my understanding, they make a limited amount of pizzas a day so it's first come first serve. Luckily 1900 Bakery has a menu of sweet and savory that I did not have to go anywhere for lunch! Lastly, I've purchased ground coffee beans from this location and have no complaints! If you ever get a chance to visit Lawrence and want an excellent coffee experience, I highly recommend this place. What splendid, perfectly velvety foam!! My cappuccino was straight up DECADENT! Excited to come back and try every single espresso drink imaginable. We also ordered a vanilla latte with half of the flavor and it was peeeeeerfecto!!! I'm still jazzed about it, to be honest. We ordered a traditional croissant which was crazy buttery and flaky. I didn't even know it was possible for a baked good to retain that much butter but it does and it's wonderful. Excited to come back and try something sweet! Everything looked so good!! The barista was really sweet and helpful with recommendations, as well. Only weird thing was she didn't know how to describe a flat white to me. She just said it was in X size cup but that doesn't really mean anything to me (maybe I'm not refined enough?). Also, their bathroom is nice which is always the most important thing, in my book. I am in love with their hand soap (which is a weird takeaway, I admit). UPDATE: This is the only coffee shop in town that has NEVER given us a low quality beverage or yummy eat. I was a visitor very early on when they were doing their soft opening (peeks at Yelp) right at three years ago. Stop in from time to time, usually for a quick latte, flat white, an occasional espresso, a couple of times for bread, have had breakfast at the counter a couple of times. Maybe 6-7 visits in three years? Make no mistake, the espresso drinks here are as good as you can get in Lawrence every time, always poured by the same barista. No imposters here--sorry, they're all employed at McClain's Market on campus. The baked goods are also unusually well crafted--from the bread to the pastries--first rate. And at those prices, they'll be reminded by the public that they damn well better be. But I end up on the other side of the argument. The issue is not that a $9 loaf of bread here is pricey if it's consistently this good. The issue is what are you getting at Dillon's for third that price that is utterly bad for you and tastes like crap? But still, no doubt those prices send the East Lawrence Neighborhood Association into a tizzy. And for the record, I like the crusty, slight burn (someone else's words) to some loaves like the Apple Raisin Walnut. That's taste, not burn. All considered, no reason to ding them on this but the venue feels stuffy, a tad pretentious, not particularly a place I want to hang out and I usually end up leaving feeling like I was being served by people that model on the side for Baldwin in KC (whoa, whoa, owners, just an inside joke, Google it). But I digress. They're good and they know it. If you come: parking is awkward and limited--welcome to the bane of most restaurants in the city. If you liked the parking at the now defunct Hank Charcuterie, expect the same. Major credit cards accepted. Hoping I'll visit one day and they'll have a small memorial on the wall to the infant abandoned here when the place was a laundromat many years ago. A couple of nickels (or dimes) were left on the pay phone for someone to call the police, the baby, swaddled, nearby. They never found the birth mother. The baby is now a middle-aged adult. You wouldn't notice a place like this that serves amazing baked pastries. Thankfully my brother knows about this place and decided to take my mom and I for breakfast. One word. Delightful. The almond croissant which was only available as a chocolate almond croissant was to die for. The chocolate croissant was a kiss of heaven (Secret: they use valrhona chocolate in the croissant). I have had this on my bookmarks for too long and finally got to unmark it. First of all we drove right past the place the first time. It is nestled in a neighborhood with residental homes all around it. Talk about an incredible vibe and location for the neighborhood. I would be in there daily. Second, how do you master bread/pastries and coffee? It is very similar to Ibis and Messenger but on a much smaller intimate scale. It is a pretty quaint cafe but perfect for drinking your coffee and people watching. I wouldn't recommend working from there. There are only high top tables and only one isn't a bar style. In the same breath they are very kind to little kids but I wouldn't say kid friendly. There are no high chairs, etc. The filter coffee was so clean and crisp. And the nitro cold brew was strong and delicious. Very happy with both. They have soy milk and a seed/cashew/almond milk they make in house. They also have a few house made syrups. No other "sweetners". I appreciate that but I know some people are particular. There is an array of teas as well. Watching the baristas is like watching art. They are precise. Now the bakery part of the cafe. It was fun watching them make the bread and you can see all of the spices and books they reference on the counters. It is like being in a really big grandma's kitchen. The croissants are buttery and flakey. We had the ham and cheese (ham from local Hank's), it is topped with almost an "everything bagel" topping so when it is warmed it crisps it and brings out those seasonings. My lemon filled croissant was incredible. Not much filling just the right amount. I didn't want a soggy croissant and the croissant still needs to steal the show. Dying to go back and try the chocolate one, it is unlike any others. And the almond croissant is twice baked, also looked divine. You can try any of the breads they are selling that day. If they sold half loaves I would have bought the olive bread. So soft and airy, chewy and crisp on the outside. They have quite the selection daily. We paid $18 for two drinks and two croissants. Dropped by 1900 to fuel our day trip to Lawrence. This bakery is on a cute residential street on a rotary. We ordered to-go online well in advance of our arrival. We got a gibraltar (basically a macchiato with a bit more milk) and it was good, as well as a chocolate croissant and lemon poppyseed loaf, and sunflower rolls for later. All the baked goods were tasty - a bit pricey for what they were, but good nonetheless. I actually thought the sunflower rolls were the standout. Service was fine - a little weird with their current setup (using a microphone behind plexiglass), but it's clear they are trying hard to be safe. Small parking lot on site made pickup easy, and we appreciated being able to walk the nice neighborhood while we waited (briefly) for our food. read more
