I stopped in briefly to grab lunch to go, and I was very happy with my falafel on pita with tahini and hummus. Reasonably priced, authentic, and fast. For such a small place, it is impressive that they seem to make everything themselves and fresh. Service was friendly as well. It's easy to miss this place, but if you're a foodie who likes Mediterranean/Middle Eastern food, this is perfect for something casual. A large part of the cafe is a small grocery store with products you definitely can't find anywhere else locally. Then there is a small seating area to dine inside. I stumbled into this small shop by accident because I was looking for a particular type rice I could. It find in the regular Americanized stores. WOW! When I entered the doors, I felt like I had been dropped here by Lawrence of Arabia himself. All the lovely, spicy smells and food was too much for me to resist. Mediterranean Market has it going. They have tons of Mediterranean fare for sale- gyros, falafel, tahini sauce, baba ganoush. It's all delicious too! The cafe is against one wall while the store takes up the other space. This is a small store and it's nice to sit and enjoy a meal. All the ingredients are fresh and well prepared. You can tell the ingredients weren't just slapped together and packaged. There was a great deal of love and caring that went into these dishes. The ingredients are all fresh and so tasty! The staff is very nice and helpful. The proprietor was very patient with me and answered all my questions. He showed my the best products even if they were cheaper than others. I was very impressed with their honesty. This cafe and market is my favorite place for lunch. You can't go wrong by ordering anything on the menu. They make everything themselves, including their excellent pita bread. The cafe area is small with only a few tables, but I've never had difficulty finding a table here. If this cafe were located downtown, it would be crowded, but not in its suburban location. The market has many interesting selections from the Middle East and India, including food and gifts. I find it to be difficult to leave here after lunch without picking up something from the market area. But I do try to resist that impulse most of the time. My favorite lunch here is the Alvar sandwich with lentil soup. I add some of their excellent hot sauce to the soup. If they had a liquor license, so could serve wine or beer, I'd also often come here for dinner. read more

Have never eaten here but have made more meals from products purchased from the market than I could possibly count. Note to starving college students: the large bags of basmati rice coming in just over $1 per lb. in the largest bags are a sure way to stay fed on the cheap, and it's hands down the best rice in town in my opinion, priced far less than the Community Merc. Love ya Merc, but your rice at twice the price isn't in the same league. Also a must: the large olive oils in the can. Yea, I know what you're thinking, but again, the quality here is unparalleled in Lawrence. Better than the Merc at multiples over in pricing. Easy decision. Buy bulk, save a ton of money. Nice little market offers up different spices and grocery items . Looking around I saw they also sell gyro meat frozen aisle which I think is great ! I came here to pick up lunch I had the gyro and spinach pie . The price was reasonable and the food was good . I really enjoyed the pie . As for the gyro , the toppings are a bit different than what I usually see in gyros in Miami so it was okay for me but my boyfriend really enjoyed it. They put iceberg lettuce and dice tomatoes with taziki sauce . They have a few other interesting things on the menu and I would definitely come back. So disappointed with my take out from here. Hummus was delicious but $7.39 for what measured out to be 4 tablespoons worth. Traditional house salad was iceberg lettuce, two slices of cucumber, two tomato wedges and the chicken was dry for $14. Falafel was flavorless. The Mediterranean Market's variety of grocery items alone is pretty nice, however it's their cafe food that I want to comment on. We had the lunch gyros combo. It comes with gyros sandwich, side salad, pita and hummus. I did not have high expectations as it has a deli atmosphere, and the food was presented on paper plates and plastic silverware. However when I tasted the food, I was extremely surprised and delighted. The gyros meat was the best I've ever had. It is more flavorful and tender as well as thicker cut than most places. The pita was soft and the hummus had what I would guess is a more authentic flavor than what I've had before, because you could actually taste the tahini in it. The people working in the store were some of the friendliest and most helpful I've encountered in an ethnic grocery. We will definitely visit again! read more

When I lived in Lawrence, I loved going to this place. I bought the tzaziki sauce by the pint and ate it with their homemade pita and gyros. Their moussaka is to die for. Flavorful, savory layers of of eggplant and ground lamb folded with a delicious tomato sauce and finally covered with a blanket of cinnamon spiced bechamel sauce. My sister and I would frequent this place often when we went on a culinary adventure to the Middle East in our kitchen. We would find everything we needed to make our own moussaka, our version of adas polo, our endeavor to make dolmadas, and our awesome rendition of baklava. read more

I prefer Aladdin cafe, but they are no longer open on weekends so if there wasn't Mediterranean Market I would have nowhere to go for med food. I was in for the second time on Monday December 7th. I'm sorry I didn't ask for the gentleman's name that was helping me, so I could thank him straight out. Not only is he the first person in several states in the USA who knew what a Turkish 'doner' was but he made me one that was almost exactly what I am used to in Europe. SO GOOD! He also let me know they have the meat and Lebanese flat bread there. He told me how to prepare the meat and how to use the flatbread in the best way. I have lived in Kansas for about 8 years and every time when I went into the store the staffs were extremely friendly and always helpful with I or anybody with anything, Everything on their menu is always served fresh and it is very tasty and me as a teenager I got a job over there in the summer and believe me it was my favorite place to work at out of all other places i have worked at both of my bosses work really hard and they are really helpful, when I worked there i never got tired of working there because it was basically my teenage dream job to work at because ever since i was a child this store/cafe was my favorite place to eat and still is my favorite place to eat and will be the first place i would only go to for lunch and dinner whenever i come back to Lawrence for a visit. read more

Sorry, I want to like this place but it's always empty. The felafel is no where close to Jerusalem on Mass. My kids were not fooled either, both said there was something wrong with the felafel and couldn't eat. Lentil soup was tasty. Bread was good. This unassuming little gem is tucked into a small strip mall. I spent just as much time looking around the wide selection of Middle and Near Eastern and European goods for sale as I did eating my lunch. I had a great lamb and beef gyro with a small side of hummus and a perfectly sized side salad. The ingredients all tasted fresh, the meat was perfectly seasoned and roasted and the pita was warm and soft. This is a great meal for a good price ($10). Lawrence is lucky to have such an awesome Mediterranean market. They have great prices on nuts, especially in addition to a great selection of cheeses and dry food goods.
