I haven't been writing reviews but I think this small business really deserves one. I'm so glad I came across Miyakonjo Bento & Catering here on Yelp when I was looking for bentos for my son's birthday party. After reading their reviews, I decided to contact them for their availability. I was helped by Tomomi & she was always responsive with my requests & inquiries. She was also okay with my last minute changes & add ons. And even offered a customized label to put on the bentos for free. The food was delicious! We got their Loco Pac which contained BBQ pork, mochiko chicken, spam & hotdog & the Keiki bentos that had mochiko chicken & spam. The amount & quality of food in the bentos were great and very affordable! They even provided utensils & napkins. Our guests loved them & asked where we got them from. They also deliver for a small fee if you spend $200 or more. But I believe they don't charge delivery fee for some areas close to their store. I highly recommend this bento & catering business! The customer service was superb & their food was amazing! I plan to try their other plate lunches & bentos soon. read more

Our office catered from there and I had the Teriyaki Salmon Bento. It was sooo good! I normally don't eat all the rice in bentos but their rice was really good too. Found this hidden gem a couple of months ago, by recommendation of a food review on YouTube, and they did not disappoint! The food is delicious, generous portions and the prices...OMG THE PRICES!! Plates range from $12 to $14, bentos $7 to $8, and musubis are $2.25 & $3.25 (and are huge!) In this day, any plate lunch for less than $15 is a steal! They also do catering. It is a small place on the corner of Hoe St./Mokauea St. Parking can be a little challenging as they have limited spaces up front. I believe 2 or 3 spots, but there are usually open spots on the street to pull in to for a few minutes while you pick up. We always phone in or order online ahead of time, so pick up is so quick and easy. Staff are always so pleasant and friendly!! Definitely one of our favorite go-tos! read more

Did you ever eat a really good piece of karaage fried chicken and think "something's missing here...it needs more"? I have not thought this. Because when something tastes super guud to me, my thinking stops and I go into food bliss shutdown mode. Wait a minute...where am I...who am I...who are you...who put this ono thing in my mouth?" But whoever invented chicken nanban (maybe in Osaka?) overcame the food bliss shutdown mode and had the genius idea "put some tartar sauce on it...it needs tartar sauce." What the...are you high or something?!?! Tartar sauce snobs would say "tartar sauce is only for fish dishes." But is there such a thing as tartar sauce snobs? Tangent...again. The reviews say the owners of Miyakonjo Bento are a caring thoughtful couple from Japan and their food backs this up one hundo percent. At some places you can see and taste the care that went into the preparation of the plate...see the pic, but sorry I ruined their perfect prep bc I got too excited and took a bite out of the chicken nanban plate...oopsy...pre-mature bite action. Don't judge...you know u did the pre-mature bite thing too! Chicken had a light crispy batter, dipped in some kind of mild ponzu shoyu sauce, rice was cooked perfect, seemed like a homemade goma dressing for the crispy salad greens. And the tartar sauce had to be handmade with just the right amount of little bits of onion floating in the creamy slightly sweet n sour yumminess. The meat to breading ratio was perfect. Some places you get a bite of all breading and little bit o meat or you get a chunk of meat and bland in the mouth bc not enuff flavored breading. Not for Miyakonjo...I think they care about the size of the meat...and when it comes to meat, they say size matters. I think I'm getting some sorta weird life lesson out of this. Has to order bulk plates for a work function and this place was great! Super affordable plate lunches and bentos. Call ahead to order. No issues upon picking the food up and they even provided extra sauces and utensils. Since this was a take-out situation, there really wasn't an "ambiance" aspect to it but the service was definitely great. And despite the high amount of food we ordered, our order was 100% correct! Underrated mom&pop Japanese bento shop. Recommend checking if they're open on Instagram, as they sometimes close early for catering. Cheap & affordable but still super high quality ingredients. Never greasy. It always feels like it's made with love. I love their chicken nanban, furikake salmon, crab cream croquette. My coworker loves their chicken katsu. They did a wonderful job, arrived within the timeframe I requested, and happily accommodated 50 extra bentos I added to the order just 2 days prior. In total I ordered 400 bentos. Tomomi, the person I worked with, quickly responded to my initial inquiry and patiently talked through my custom order. I received many compliments on the food; even people who didn't attend had heard through the grapevine that the food was good and asked me for their information. One word! AMAZING! I ordered customized bentos and they were a big hit! We had a baby shower and tight budget and they were so understanding and helped us make the perfect bento! Ordered the Curry Rice Chicken Plate, with the mochiko chicken option. This plate is packaged very well for takeout, the curry is packaged in its own container. The curry is very tasty, the tomato based curry sauce makes it the perfect paring to the crispy fried mochiko chicken. Just used them for the first time for a week of corporate summits for my job. I cannot say enough about how delicious the food is. The price point is PHENOMENAL, for what you get. I booked them for 3 days of lunch and each day was consistently good. I have people from all departments asking about the food. We tried the tonkatsu pork&chicken, naban, mochiko, and garlic chicken, and the teri tofu and salmon plates. They came with rice dusted with furikake, salad with a delicious house made dressing, and large entree portions! My favorite was the salmon by far, but my immediate co-workers also loved the teriyaki tofu (the vegetarian attendees kept talking about the tofu for days, it's so hard to get tofu right and they LOVED it). I tried some of each and I just don't think you can go wrong with what you order here. We opted for the "plate" portions because they came with a salad! They delivered, customers service was off the chain kind, accommodating. I can't say enough about this place, I want to gatekeep it so bad but they deserve all the business they can get. read more

Heard this place was good. I was in the area so we decided to try it. We called in an order which they said would take 30 min. There's no place to sit so it is takeout only. For a small place, it is super busy and parking is difficult. Got the grilled salmon plate with the Mayo on the side and all salad. Also got the Kaki or fried oyster plate with all salad and the nanban chicken curry plate. I liked that you can order all rice or all salad. Everything was cooked well and had great flavor! Hidden gem in sand island, industrial area. You can't miss it, the building is yellow. Needed to get bento for office, boss was getting for office. Affordable bentos, with many choices to choose from. Less than 10.00, bentos are small but hit the spot, and was enough to make me full. I got the local pack, was very tasty and flavorful. Call in your order, parking can get scarce, 3 parking stalls otherwise street parking. They do catering, and bentos have many combinations. Coming back to try other items. Hokkidon soymilk croquette and nanban chicken are few things I would order again from here. The portion size is good for the price. If your really hungry I would suggest the regular plate size instead of the bento size. I think it's a husband and wife team so there maybe delays if they have a lot of orders. They do take phone orders so that may help if you are in a time crunch. They have only 2 parking spots out front. If they are taken then it may be hard to find Street parking. read more

I've had this place bookmarked for a long time and randomly found myself in the area before noon on a weekday and remembered Miyakonjo! Called to place an order and headed over to the big bright yellow building a few blocks makai of Alicia's to pick up my food. There are maybe 3 parking spaces right out front which I am pretty sure are only for this place. They are known for their chicken nanban -- a Japan-style dish that local people would surely love if they knew of it. This version did not disappoint. Boneless, marinated fried chicken served with a terrific egg/tartar sauce for dipping. If you are like me, you may try to convince yourself that the nice lettuce salad with sesame dressing makes this meal "healthy." Ummmm... I also ordered the spicy chicken plate. Pretty much the same fried chicken but this one was tossed in a light kochujang sauce. It was only "spicy" by Japanese standards, in other words, not spicy at all. It was good but the chicken nanban was clearly the standout. The funky location might help keep their costs down. (The plates were a great value!) I selfishly wish they had better hours or were located in town or somewhere out east closer to me! But until then, I'll have to just remember this place when I'm out near Sand Island. I finally found Miyakonjo. They used to be situated in the Shirokiya Village Walk at Ala Moana Center. Before the pandemic, I tried their Chicken Nanban Bento and found the chicken juicy and flavorful...with the tartar sauce it was a bit better. They have an Anniversary Special till Friday...half-off their large and small chicken boxes. The large is normally 8-12 pieces of chicken at $13.00, but it was $6.50 today. The are located at 1763 Hoe St. and open M-F; from 0900 to 1400. I ordered the Mochiko and Nanban Spicy large boxes online. Both were quite flavorful without any of the sauces that come with the order. The Mochiko chix sauce was a house made BBQ sauce, teriyaki style. The spicy tartar sauce was more on the zesty side. There are so many fun foodie options in Kalihi Kai but the problem is always where to park. The best strategy is to have a friend so one can double park while the other runs for food. Lucky for me, I have a foodie friend! Today we decided to check out a place my friend discovered on You Tube. She knew about Miyakonjo since the Shirokiya Village Walk days and this year they've opened a takeout place in Kalihi. They are known for their Nanban Chicken but there's also Mochiko, Spicy Fried, Katsu and Fried Teriyaki Chicken. There are plates (rice and tossed salad) and bentos, Oyako and Katsu Don, Grilled Salmon and musubis. My favorite is the Chicken Box. Get the large which is 9-12 pieces of tender, juicy chicken for $13. I also got a salmon bento, $7, so I had some rice to go with the chicken box. The spicy tartar sauce goes well with the Nanban. It's just spicy enough to compliment the slightly vinegar-y sauce on the chicken. But if you like spicy try the Godzilla Roll, $3. This big boy packs some heat! I had the spicy pork, but there's also a spicy chicken. My friend had the Katsu Don, which got a thumbs up for taste and value (good size for $7). Check out the monthly specials calendar. I needed 50 bentos at the last minute this morning. I placed an order on their website this morning at 12:10 a.m., December 26th...the day after Christmas). Their website said pickup would at 10 a.m., but 10+ orders may take a little more time. I added a note asking to let me know if they would not be able to have 50 bentos ready by 10 a.m. since I had to be somewhere by 10:30 a.m., and would I be able to get a refund. Tomomi texted me this morning and said they could have the bentos ready at 10 a.m. Sure enough, it was ready when I got there. Tomomi was really nice. School break is going on, so it was cute that their kids were there helping out. The bentos were perfect. Just enough for a light lunch. I saw on their website they can do custom catering bentos, which I would have done if it wasn't last minute (need three days notice/call). They are my new go-to bento place! read more

There is possibly 2 stalls out in front. They are located on Fern if you're coming up Mokauea it's almost immediately to the right you can't miss the yellow building. The only down side would be if the lot is full then you would have to find street parking and with all the businesses in the area there isn't much parking. For me I woulda walked but there is a homeless area on one of the streets so I drove instead thank goodness there wasn't anyone there so I got parking. I had looked them up on Instagram and it said you could text and I did but no one answered so I ended up calling. I believe his name was Jacob he was super sweet I think he was the one who also made the food such a bubbly personality. Their prices are tax inclusive which I love because I hate dealing with change. I ordered the mochiko chicken the batter was nice a crispy they don't give that much chicken but it was delicious. They gave a little container of sauce it kinda tasted like katsu sauce but a little sweeter. I'll be back to try the sweet and sour chicken. My friend and I stopped by this cute little yellow shop in Kalihi for some lunch one day, and ahhhh it was so so good! They're cash only, and parking can be tricky since there's only like three stalls in front of the store, but lots of opportunity for street parking! the plates are only $10, while bentos are $6 (tax included in both prices) We got the Nanban Chicken Plate, a mix plate of the Teriyaki and Spicy Chicken, a Mochiko Chicken bento. The Nanban Chicken is the most popular - i liked that the sour flavor of the vinegar wasn't super strong, since I'm not a huge fan of vinegar. But with that said, although it's the most popular one, it was my least favorite. The Teriyaki one tasted like a Korean Fried Chicken with the sweet, sticky sauce, while the spicy one kind of reminded me of hot cheetos, with the tangy kick. the Mochiko chicken tasted exactly the way my mum makes it at home - super comforting! All the chicken is fried to order and is super duper fresh. All the pieces I saw were fairly plump, and I loved that I didn't run into any fat-ridden pieces. I will admit that the food took quite a while to come out. There were two guys that ordered a plate each before us, and a lady that picked up her phone order in between, but we waited around 30-35 minutes for our food. This place is absolutely awesome for high volume catering. We've had some events the past few years for a few hundred bentos each. We ordered take out for lunch and I opted to try the Chicken Nanban Plate given all the existing recommendations and it did not disappoint! Perfect balance of flavors with the sauce that is included for the chicken. Nanban chicken is delightfully yummy! Boneless pieces of chicken. Nanban sauce is vinegary but not too. MUST eat it with the tartar sauce or you'll be missing out. I know, "tartar sauce, really? Tartar sauce is for fish." Nuh-Uh! Excelllent with Nanban chicken! A++ The mochiko chicken was a bit disappointing. kinda hard and dry. C-/D+ Plates come with rice and green salad. You can opt for all rice or all salad. Bentos come with rice and a sliver of takuan. No mixed bentos or plates. I ordered a mochi chick bento and a side order Nanban chicken. I only ate HALF of what I ordered. So much chicken! Used all tartar sauce. I cannot review the establishment because I had food delivered. Cute little hidden gem in a Kalihi industrial area! Small parking but services goes by quick. We wanted to try something new at affordable prices . We tried the chicken nanban and aji katsu bento. Both had perfect texture and taste, and were accompanied by good sauces. First time trying nanban. It's a bit tangy at first but with the tarter sauce it really balances it out. Prices are effective to change soon but not by much. We'll definitely return ! read more
