My son saw Susanne for about 2 years to help with his speech development after he stopped sucking his thumb. Honestly, cannot say enough good things about her. She made sure that we had the info we needed to work with him at home, and worked with his teacher so that he could get additional support in his classroom. I never imagined I would be sad seeing my son "graduate" from speech therapy, but I found myself on the verge of tears when he finished his last session recently. She had my two second grade boys master their "s" and "r" areas in less than nine months. She targets well and corresponds with homework--which is just five to ten minutes a day. My son is in the first grade and has always had difficulty with his "r" sounds. I have been told that this is one of the most difficult speech errors to correct and that it can take some kids a year or two of therapy. After seven sessions with Jamie, she said that he no longer needs therapy! I noticed a huge difference after three sessions. We did our ten minutes of reading the homework each night or we played the fun card games that she gave us. Jamie was wonderful. Susanne is just really awesome at what she does. She pushes you, she's kind, she's smart, and then she knows when it's time to let you go. Mostly, I just felt her competency was just spot on from the very beginning. She knows her stuff, and that's something I really can respect. And she's not pushy (like begging for money). My son's teacher and pediatrician suggested that he start speech therapy. We are new to Austin, so I had no idea where to start. I Googled it and AASLT was very close to our house so I called. My son was evaluated late in the school year (in May) to determine whether: 1) He needed speech therapy 2) he would qualify for services within the school. The evaluating clinician identified a few issues with my son's speech. Due to multiple issues at hand, my son qualified for speech therapy at school. My husband and I decided we would get a "jump start" over the summer because services would not be in place to the following school year (this Sept). After doing some research, I contacted Susanne Schlankey at Austin Area Speech Therapy and Language Services. She returned my call promptly and we had a discussion about my son's needs. Susanne is very professional yet she has a great sense of humor. She connected well with both me and my child. She addressed a very sensitive subject matter with my son with such careful consideration of his feelings. She answered questions thoroughly and my son seemed to enjoy working with her. But best of all, my child made REMARKABLE strides and improvements with his speech. In fact, the school language pathologist (he started a couple weeks ago at school) told me that one would never know he had a problem making his vowel R sounds. A year ago, we realized that teachers and grown ups had problems understanding our 4yo daughter. She will lower the volume of her voice when someone asks her to repeat what she said. We decided for her to start speech therapy, and had spoken to couple of different speech therapist. My daughter had hard time connecting to any of them. Then we found Tammy. Our daughter started seeing Tammy seven months ago, once a week, and has made an incredible progress. Tammy is great with children, and makes a play out of a therapy session. The dynamic of the session is adjusted to child's personality and mood, but overall results are amazing. We had a son in 6th grade who had been in and out of speech therapy a few times with other practices. Our elder son also had a speech issue and had gone to speech therapy as well, but his resolution seemed mostly to be just growing out of it. So, we were waiting for this to happen with our second son. It didn't seem to be happening. For 5th grade, I put him in therapy that was administered online via webex. I did this because of cost and convenience reasons. It didn't seem to help at all. My son's issues were primarily with the "r" sound. So, I saw the reviews for Austin Area Speech and Susanne in particular and as a last gasp effort decided to give it a try. In a little over 6 months my son's speech issue was corrected. Susanne was both personable and at the same time held my son to high standards and expected him to practice. These expectations were important. Technically she was also very good compared to our other therapists. The cost was very reasonable. My only regret was not trying it sooner. I highly recommend Susanne. read more
