Just like the name says, this is totally a garage. Such a cool concept! The art here is super trendy and eye-catching, my husband and I really enjoyed it! Nice little art shop, very well lit, clean, and organized into 4 different rooms. The high ceilings also make it feel larger, and the rooms are pretty open, so you can see the pieces from different distances. There are a number of local artists' works, and a nice range of prices so you can grab something as a small gift, or for yourself (into the hundreds). There are some more expensive items but lots of work that are in the $100-300 range of decent size so you can find something that's worth the money for a nice piece of art. The shop is set back a bit in a sort of alley behind other stores/buildings, with a gravel lot, so if you're wondering where it is, there is a sign on the street pointing to the back. read more

You just have to come by and appreciate what the Art Garage is. If you're like me you enjoy art and would like to put a few pieces in your home (more for your enjoyment than for showing off your 'taste'). But you're not sure where to start, what to look for or how things feel. And traditional galleries are forbidding places with a language all their own. What to do... Go to the Garage, that's what. In the physical store, located @2200 South Lamar, you find pieces from something like two dozen or more Austin artists. That's right - Austin talent, baby. Serious, studied, spoofed, surreal - they have it. The gallery is at the end of the long driveway @2200 - and I warn you, the address comes up quick! If you're heading south on South Lamar start looking closely for the 2200 entrance on your right-hand (west) immediately after seeing Bird's next door to Aviary. Your sharp eyes will reward you - make the gentle turn and go all the way to the back of the lot where the gallery sits just to your left. Three rooms of prints and originals grace you from inside and there is a very good chance you'll be assisted by the lovely and patient Sophia, or the lovely and patient Rachel. Did I also mention they are knowledgable not just about art per se but the artists represented? Go ahead and ask them anything (it can't be any dumber than what I have) and they will respond with aplomb and grace. With a mixture of emerging and more established artists represented, plus several media and multiple sizes you are sure to find something unique as well as affordable. If you've been wondering lately why it is you love this city so much (and if you haven't already answered that question for yourself), pop on over to the Austin Art Garage. Cause these guys have a hidden secret: some of the coolest art in our city is totally accessible. Austin Art Garage sits in an enclave of businesses that used to be an area of town called Freetown, a community of freedmen that lived in Austin in the ensuing years after the Civil War. As such, there's a city-protected graveyard that lives in the shadow of these businesses, and what's popped up here are a spate of really cool industrial and artistic experiments. Case in point, the Art Garage is a floor-to-ceiling ongoing Austin-centric art collection, and the proprietors themselves are full participants in the creativity, one showing his paintings here, and the other his photo work. I'm a sucker for the idea that I could own an original and help a local artist at once, and that's likely reason enough for me to give these guys a whirl again. And maybe a few duckets in the offing. read more

I've never actually been in the store, but I had a great experience ordering online. I was looking for some new art pieces for my living room and wanted to buy local. I found Austin Art Garage via Blue Genie Art Bazaar and was pleased to see how close the store was to me. I checked out the website and immediately found several beautiful options, so I decided to just forgo visiting the store and order online instead. I bought a couple canvases that needed to be made custom made. It only took about a week for them to be created and picking the pieces up at the store was easy. I was so happy with the pieces I purchased that I already ordered another one. I'll be recommending Austin Art Garage to anyone who is looking for art or who is redecorating! read more

I bought a painting about a decade ago. I LOVE the art. I bought a condo and put it over the fire place. It's a really cool painting on an actual window pane. The wood frame and all. It's of a little boy with his hands over his face. I think Jake sold it to me. I did not appreciate my experience with him so I never visited the Art Garage again. When I pulled out my card to pay, he said, "Credit I assume". I said, "No, debit ". It doesn't matter either way when you know an ATM check card draws from your checking account whether the card is swiped as a credit card or a debit card. I didn't like his presumption though. Then, he handed me the delicate painting (painted on glass) and said he didn't have any boxes so he couldn't wrap it for me. I'd never bought a piece of art before, but it didn't seem right to send me out the door with a delicate $700 painting and nothing with which to protect it. I would have bought more art, but I hated this first experience. read more

Jake Bryer and Joel Ganucheau, proprietors of AAG, know how to have an art opening. The scene is definitively South Austin. Any given time I was either talking to a despondent ex-hippy, a lawyer, a punk rocker, or a grizzled vet. There were hot chicas left and right, and artsy types, familiar faces, and, what in the world... no pretentious attitude that I could pick up on! It was an excellent time to peruse the show as well as the permanent collection all of which is for sale. They have just opened a new space next door, installed a cased opening so you can walk through and lit the place from floor to ceiling. The new space is a great addition since the old space was getting pretty cramped. I was told that is where they will be showing their featured artists. Austin Art Garage is still one of the best places in Austin to get local affordable original art. The art ranges from abstract to design heavy, sculpture and photography, and some of the best stuff I've seen was by its proprietors. It is all worth checking out, and these guys are on their way to becoming the hot thing in town if they aren't already. read more

I love, love, love this place. They showcase and sell art by Austins finest as well as a few instate and international artist. Did I mention I love this place? I happened upon the Austin Art Garage a few years ago shortly after they opened. I was in the area shopping for clothing when I noticed their sign. I drove past the clothing stores at the entrance of the drive and parked in front of a metal warehouse. I really wasn't expecting too much so I was floored when I entered! This place is amazing, they have various forms of art work on display and for sale. Most of the artist are home grown or live locally. Many of them have to work multiple jobs to do what they love and Austin Art Garage gives them a place to display and sell their art. The owner is a main stay and almost always the face you see when you walk in the door. He is warm, friendly and knowledgeable. He loves art and loves what he does and it shows. I have purchased several pieces from here and many times just go in to look around and soak in the art. The art is diverse, beautiful, creative and for the most part very affordable. I never used to think I'd own art. Then, one of my travel buddies told me that a) art doesn't have to be expensive and b) she buys art when she travels as it's a special reminder she sees everyday. I have a love/hate relationship with all things artistic. In a nutshell, it's that elitist mentality you generally find working behind the counter of your local record store or the art snob who's too pretentious for their own good. I received none of the attitude or unfriendliness when visiting today that would stop me from visiting the establishment again. In fact, I left with a few items I hadn't intended to purchase as a result of service received. Where buying original art is concerned, I think a lot of people shy away from the thought of it as it often something that isn't easily accessible. Austin Art Garage provide a nice mix of originals and prints which work nicely with any budget. Like Laura O., I generally tend to purchase something everywhere I roam so the collage created from the various experience reminds me of the adventures I've had. The place I've lived. The significant events which called for celebration. Regardless of the scenario, I know I can walk into Austin Art Garage and find a show that's going to fit. A pleasant experience indeed. read more

This place is soooooo cool. Features the best local art Austin has to offer. Lots of fun mixed media work, cool dreamy robots, and features of some of my favorite iconography: analog music players. This place has some great art work, but in my opinion the majority if it was very kitchy and really just there to be sold instead of pondered. A lot of the artwork is themed around Austin landmarks and geography. I honestly don't think this place is worthy of all the praise. Went to an opening here last night. The guys who are the proprietors also make art themselves. It's some cool stuff and not pretentious at all. Cool photos, nice mixed media and rad paintings.
