I've been here a few times, trying to give it the benefit of the doubt, but it's just not good. The potatoes (I've tried home fries and hash browns) are over-cooked, my eggs have come out runny or rubbery, and the coffee is mediocre. I find the decor cluttered. And today I spent over $12 for the breakfast special, coffee, and tip. With so many other better breakfast options in the surrounding 10 blocks (Dan's, the Frisco, Elsi's, the Omelettry, Taqueria Arandas, Consuela's, La Victoria) there's no reason to stop here. read more

This place is great for Mexican breakfast, especially if you live in the neighborhood. The huevos santa fe and oaxaca omelette are two of my favorite breakfast meals in town. Unfortunately they are only offered as specials so you never know if you will be able to order them. Hopefully someday they will figure this out and add them to the regular menu. The service here can be sketchy as others have said, but it has never made me angry enough to not come back, especially in light of how good the food normally is. I have never tried any of the lunch or dinner fare, or any of the non-mexican breakfasts, so I can't vouch for that stuff. But why would you even want a non-mexican breakfast if you had a choice? read more

lately i have hit up a few diners as I've been on the road some. So the other day whiel driving to work i passed by thispalce and said to myself, "wait, i need to do the diner thing at home." so i make a u-turn and turn into the place. 7AM on a weekday and i am the only one in the place. ok that is a red flag. there are more places in Austin that would be brimming with morning. i sat at a lonely booth ordered a plate of migas, had my coffee refilled, paid my check and left. that sums up the experience. food was passable, service neither here nor there, decor stood above all. read more

The new location is cute. The food (4 stars): Started with biscuits and gravy which were good. Eggs, pancakes, sausage and bacon all hit the spot. The wife had no complaints either. The service (2 stars): Bad. We showed up around 2 (they close at 3) on a Sunday and our server was more concerned with rolling silverware than making sure we had silverware to eat with and butter and syrup for our pancakes. Visited this place for the first, and I think for the last, time Saturday October 4th. The "diner" was mostly empty when I got there and I got the impression from the glares I got from all the staff sitting at the bar that I was interrupting their breakfast. The service at no point improved from there. My server came by exactly 4 times. 1- get drink order 2-bring drink and take order 3- bring food 4- bring check. In all 4 trips, maybe 10 words spoken by her, total!!! Service gets 1 star!! Now the food! I ordered the 3 egg breakfast over medium with ham, hash browns and biscuit. The eggs came out less than over easy, the ham was sandwich slice ham grilled, the hash browns were cold and gummy, and the biscuit was prepackaged food service "heat and eat". Definitely not the worst breakfast ever, but damn close!!food gets two stars. The place had a cool vibe though with oldies on the radio and the 50's style interior. If the owner/management cared a little more and hired decent servers and put better quality food out there, this place could be nice. As it is, I'll not be back!!! This was an awesome diner. They had a large selection on their menu. I chose to have french toast and bacon. I was very surprised when I received my french toast and bacon because I got 6 triangles and about 8 pieces of bacon! The cost was very reasonable. I paid 7 dollars for it on top of a dollar 99 for my large root beer. I love the ambience of the diner and they even played fifties music. Customer service was attentive. I would definitely recommend coming here especially during the weekdays in the mid-afternoon. Breakfast is served all day which is a plus for me. read more

Local favorite that seems to have fallen into disrepair lately. Many booths are cracking and in need of fixing and/or replacement, giving the place a feel like the ownership doesn't care. Probably the worst diner I have ever been too. The cook has no passion for his food. It's fast If you want fast food. Half my breakfast was cold. I signed up for yelp to specifically write about this place. I have never been more disapponted in greasy spoon/diner food, service or atmosphere in my life. I came in with my boyfriend and son on Saturday afternoon. We were immediately seated and then promptly ignored for about 15 minutes. After someone decided to serve us we asked for our drink order and then ignored again for a length of time. When it came time to order I asked for a burger and a fry/onion ring combo and was promptly told "no". I was never told that I could do it for a fee or anything. The waiter just said no and then continued to take our order. When our food came (after an extensive wait) I wanted to immediately turn it back. To put it nicely, it was HORRIBLE. I could add some adjectives and expletives but it was quite possibly the worst food that has ever been placed before me in a restaurant setting. To stick the knife in further I was greeted with a $32 bill for a sad excuse for a hamburger, a flimsy chickenfried steak and a horrid jr burger. I will never return. I want my money back or maybe some compensation to cover the gastrointestinal discomfort that ensued post consumption. read more

alright... so the two awesome points: i bought a bouncy ball at the vending machine while i waited to be seated and my migas didn't overwhelm me with grease. the rest was not so hot. my waitress seemed apathetic and hurried ben and i through our orders. after the food arrived she disappeared. while my migas were passable, the boy i came with received seriously subpar food. his ham and cheese omelet came with one overcooked and uncut slice of ham tossed into the middle, and the bacon seemed to be solidified into one mass. come to think of it they didn't bother putting tortilla "strips" into my migas. i kept pulling full wilted looking chips out as i ate. i dunno. it's cool that this local business exists, but there definitely needs to be some quality improvement. read more

I want to love this neighborhood eatery but I just can't. The first thing you notice is how dingy and broken down the seating and fixtures are which always makes me wonder about the cleanliness of the kitchen. Secondly, their prices are a bit higher than I would expect for a diner, esp. for breakfast. Ex: $9 for a hash brown/ egg/ cheese skillet. The coffee is unremarkable, probably food service coffee. We tried this as a new Sunday breakfast venue It was horrible. 1 the interior is dated and needs update- the vinyl booths are all cracked and need to be updated 2 I ordered the homestyle breakfast - the potatoes were under cooked as well as the sausage. Terrible wait, slow, uninterested wait staff. Let's see, I hate to do this but I've been a few times and it just never lives up to expectations. I love burnet road and hope to see businesses grow here, but this place isn't helping the pool. The bacon was thin and burned and tasted, well.... strange. The belgium waffle was chewy, and not easy to cut when provided with a butter knife and fork. The only reason this place gets a 2 rather than 1 star rating is for the mexican omelet which by the way doesn't really even taste mexican. But none the less tasted good, covered in some weird tomato sauce, once again it was strange, but good. Other than that we waited an hour to eat, and the decor is dirty and uninviting. I love diners and diner food and this place definitely delivers on that. I'm not looking for any haute cuisine - just some good breakfast and some decent homestyle cooking. The breakfast here was great. The omelette was well cooked, with enough cheese to keep me satisfied. The home fries weren't undercooked like they tend to be at Kerbey Lane. The hamburgers are yummy. I went with a friend for dinner one night and we tried the specials. He loves boring, "American" food and said that his meatloaf was excellent (there were no leftovers so I took him at his word). My chicken and dumplings was fantastic. I just wish this place was a bit cheaper, but I guess that's how diners go in Austin. What a shame. I have many fond memories of some great meals when they were at their old location, but something has definitely changed. My daughter's simple scrabbled eggs were watery and undercooked. The Jake's cakes, one of my favorite dishes there, were sour and bitter tasting, probably from spoiled milk or really bad ginger. The waitresses were unresponsive and curt, making a table next to me wait over ten minutes for service. I don't know if they hired a horrible new cook, or if this was just an anomally. I so wanted to like this place. Got the Monterrey chicken sandwich. I called it in. When I arrived 10 minutes later, it was not ready, even though the place was only 1/4 full at noon. The chicken was grossly chewy, sandwich was disgustingly swimming in ranch that totally drowned out the guac. Somehow, even tho' the bread was toasted, it managed to turn completely soggy on the 5 min. drive back to my office. So bad, I couldn't eat it. Ok so if you are looking for a true Austiny hang out, head a few blocks south for the Omletry. But if you are looking for an inexpensive, tasty plate of eggs, Austin Diner is the place to be! The coffee is strong and the eggs are perfection. Please, please order the home fries!!! They are seriously the best home fries in all of Austin. No dry french fries here, just warm, soft, buttery potato pieces. I like the environment, lots of stuff to look at (very kitchy) and the wait staff is just there to do their job, no lolly-gaggin around. It's a very chill place, the patio is perfect on a cool morning. Don't go expecting 5 star dining, but for a quick, filling Saturday morning breakfast, Austin Diner hits the spot! read more

I had the chicken fried steak (gravy on the side, green beans, and fried okra. My meal was AWESOME! I tend to like the batter for the CFS to be a bit more flavorful but this was still good, nonetheless. The cornbread was also VERY good. My buddy also had the CFS, spinach greens, and squash mix. He detested the spinach greens but loved the squash mix. He also liked the CFS. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. I'll definitely be making a return trip since this is in my part of town! BTW, they are moving to the North Loop Plaza shopping center within the next few months. I would like to see a seafood place move in once the move is complete. The round windows on the north and south sides of the restaurant definitely give the place a nautical feel. read more

Austin Diner decided to make some changes. I don't know whether it is under new management since they moved down the street, but they took several of my mom's favorite items off the menu and have changed their style of cooking on several things. I used to rank their bacon cheeseburger as about the best in Austin, but I didn't really enjoy it this last visit. The bread was different, the fries were different, and the meat seemed much fattier to me. I just didn't enjoy it. I used to get a stomach ache from eating it, but thought it was worth it, but this time I just got a stomach ache. I mean, their food is still marginally ok, but just not as good as it was. Moral to the story: keep experimenting because things change. read more

A diner is a part of americana, not a dining experience. Austin Diner fits into that mold. Come in have some eggs and bacon, a couple of pancakes soaked in sticky sugary syrup, wash it down with a cup of regular coffee that tastes like coffee and know that most days your toast won't be burned. Don't be surprised if the coffee gets sloshed, your toast forgotten, or any number of other misadventures that happen at diners every morning all over america. This was the final stop on our Austin trip, and it's a place I'll definitely seek out again. The banana nut pancakes were sensational, and my girlfriend's whole wheat pancakes with warm blueberries were terrific. My mom had Bruces -- eggs on English muffins with a cheesy sauce and spinach. The bacon was undoubtedly microwaved, the sausage was a gelatinous white patty, the pancakes were dry, the hash browns may have had lawry's in them, and the coffee was barely hot, tasted like plastic and smelled like a grease I couldn't identify. We were headed to The Upper Crust but decided we would rather have a "real" breakfast with some eggs and bacon. We were passing by Austin Diner so decided to give them a try. The place is small-ish and cute. The server came right over and took our drink orders: black coffee and unsweet iced tea. After bringing our drinks, she took our breakfast orders. I ordered the eggs scrambled with bacon and topped with cheese, grits, and biscuit. I stressed that I wanted my eggs scrambled soft. My husband ordered eggs basted, bacon, and wheat toast. Our food arrived fairly quickly.and my eggs weren't soft. The cook scrambled the eggs with bacon, sprinkled the cheese on top, then microwaved the plate to melt the cheese. NOOOOOOO! Eggs are never soft after being in the microwave. The grits were unseasoned and lumpy. Folks, grits are EASY to cook: boil slightly salty water, add the grits slowly, and stir, stir, stir, add butter or margarine. They are not intended to be eaten lumpy AND must be seasoned! The biscuit was lukewarm and probably from a restaurant supply facility. No jelly on the table. My husbands eggs were OK and his bacon was crispy. He had no complaints. Next time we're in Austin and looking for a "real" breakfast, it won't be here. read more

Coffee was robust and service was pleasant, though they forgot the bacon my companion ordered. No great loss there -- the bacon was the thinnest I've ever seen. Biscuit is the big bready kind, no crisp. The cheapest brand of jam, eggs without taste -- though they did cook exactly to order. This was the revelation: their refried beans. Amazing!
