Firstly, the food is amazing. You won't be disappointed. Servers are friendly, so that's good. What was disappointing/needs work: 1. I couldn't get the "Join Waitlist" on Toasttab to work for the downtown location. It worked for other locations but not the one we wanted. So we waited about 15 minutes (not a huge deal) but why offer and even advertise it at the restaurant if it doesn't work? 2. When walking in to get on the waitlist, I was waiting behind someone who was being helped. Another person walked in behind me to also get on the list, and a second employee helped them first and skipped me. Again, not a big deal, but just not a great way to start, especially when I'd been annoyed with item 1 to even get on the list at all. Please attend the line and not the person pushing their way in. 3. The shrimp on my shrimp and grits were amazing and plentiful but I had almost no grits in that skillet. Maybe there should be a different serving vessel and they would be more present. Tasty but I had two bites with any significant amount of grit to shrimp ratio! Would I come back? Yes! None of the things above are deal breakers but just annoying for a first time patron. If it continues to happen, I'd reconsider my answer. The Phoebe's Diner downtown location is much bigger and nicer than the Oltorf location in south Austin. There's free street parking directly across the street, which is a big plus downtown. The service was very warm and friendly but not as attentive. The yogurt parfait was delicious. I ordered it without the lemon curd and it was still fantastic. The portion was very generous so I couldn't even finish it. The tater tots were perfectly crispy and soooo good dipped in ranch. A few sides were a bit disappointing. The mushrooms and spinach were a bit too salty, and the side of scrambled eggs looked very dry - my friend didn't even eat them, and the bacon was so thick it tasted like ham. What a great little Diner!! The people were super friendly and welcomed us in on a Sunday at prime time... we were seated pretty quickly. The food selections were great. The place some great breakfast options as well lunch sandwiches. I went for the green Churizo shrimp and grits which were creamy and cheesy. The shrimp was grilled which added so much flavor. This was my first time trying the green Churizo and I simply loved it. We also tried the Fried french toast which was really good. Absolutely one of my favorite brunch places to go to in Austin! There is one dish here that I come for, and it's the crab cake Benedict. The dish is very well executed and has the perfect amount of richness to it. The crab has always tasted fresh, and there is definitely a good amount in each crab cake. This dish comes with one side and I like to get their hashbrown casserole. Service is typically good, and it's definitely a great restaurant to visit with family and friends. I've only been to Phoebe's twice and both times was at this downtown location. It's easy to see why it's a top spot with fellow Yelpers and others alike. Their version of a Scotch Egg is pretty yum. Egg, cheddar cheese, potato and sausage in perfectly round and fried ball. It's the perfect app for two to share. The fried green tomatoes!!! I love the light and crispy batter fry with subtle seasoning to complement the tomato. The fry method doesn't take away from the tomato at all. Blends together nicely. We've also had the biscuits and gravy, bananas foster French toast, baked eggs, and chile relleno. Definitely recommend! Their twists on southern comfort food take the diner experience to another level. This ain't your run of the mill greasy spoon. They have a couple of locations but this is the only one I've been to. As you can imagine, it gets pretty busy especially during peak times. They do an excellent job with customer service, getting people seated and fed in a timely manner. The outside was battered/fried super crispy and held the structure of the pepper, and reminded me of like a doritos loco taco. A very nice diner experience on this Sunday morning at Phoebe's. We put our names n the wait list around 9:45am (thanks to Yelp! Pro-tip to use that service!) and by the time we arrived at 10:05am, our table for two was ready! Our server came by promptly and took our drink order, and the coffee arrived seconds later. Yes it was diner coffee, but that was exactly what we wanted. We were then given 3 recommendations from the menu, and we gladly ordered one savory and one sweet item. The Deep Fried French Toast was as crazy as you can imagine. Two of the thickest slices of bread I've ever seen, deep fried to a dark golden brown, with a baseball sized dollop of hand whipped cream sandwiched between. Upon cutting open, it was discovered to be perfectly moist and decadent. Plenty sweet without the extra syrup, but of course a dip here and there were required. Very tasty. The brisket burrito was likewise decadent on the other extreme. Rich and salty and perfectly paired with the deep fried potatoes side. The complimentary salsa served on the side lended the perfect touch of acidity. Another great dish. The place felt like an upscale diner... cozy and comfortable and warm.
