What's the best brunch spot in Austin? Some say that spot might be Paperboy. It must be up to me to come to that conclusion. My beautiful girlfriend, traveling home from Vancouver, had a morning layover in Austin just recently on a weekday, and I got us a reservation to Paperboy East. Compared to the weekends, their schedule was a lot more open. On the weekends it can be nearly impossible to get a spot unless it's a few weeks in advance. We had a reservation at 8 am right when they opened, and when we walked in, we were seated immediately. The place looks like a modern twist on the old-school diners your grandparents love. There's also an upstairs and downstairs patio. Plenty of space! We were sat at one of the two-person tables. To start, I ordered their house drip coffee while my girlfriend got their "Lil Remi," an iced cappuccino with salted caramel. The black coffee was excellent and flavorful, while my girlfriend thought her Lil Remi was like a milkier shaken espresso that she really liked. From their starters, we ordered their Blueberry Lemon Pop Tart to share. I am a sucker for a homemade Pop Tart, and the jam on the inside was extremely fresh, and the icing and crust of the Pop Tart itself was sturdy and full of flavor. For our entrees, I ordered their Texas Hash with added avocado while my girlfriend ordered their famous Paperboy Pancake with chocolate chips as a full breakfast with bacon and two over-hard eggs. It wasn't a long wait at all to get our food. The Texas hash looked great and was presented quite nicely, which is a shame because I immediately proceeded to mash it all together to make sure every bite had a perfect balance of the roasted pork, sweet potatoes, egg, and avocado. It was very filling and substantial, which is great because I needed it to last me up to dinner. The pancake is the star of the show and is worth the order alone. The flying saucer they serve rises like a cake in the oven and is extremely fluffy. She was surprised with how it was a traditional pancake but loved how moist it was for its size. A perfect pancake to her. A perfect pancake to me because she couldn't finish it, so I took it to go and ate the last few bites immediately after dropping her off at the airport. For being an upscale diner in the prime area of Austin, I knew Paperboy was going to be pricey, but I honestly thought that it would crack $100 before tip between the two of us. I was very happy to see it was not even close to that and cost us about $80 with tip. To me, that felt fair for Austin, and I would pay that price any day of the week for a breakfast like we had. I've had a few of the locally owned brunch and breakfast spots in Austin and concur with the masses that this sits strongly at the top of the list. Best pancakes, best atmosphere, and the best times. This is my first trying Paperboy, I've heard many great things about it. The wait can get long on the weekends so I recommend going earlier before the rush. The ambiance in here is warm and inviting, there is a lot of natural light in here. It did get a little hot sitting at the table near the door but otherwise it felt nice in here. I ordered the chicken & biscuit along with a cheddar hash brown. I thought the food was pretty pricey but again this is Austin. The chicken was crispy, but a bit more crispy than you think it is. I had some parts where I felt like I was eating chicken jerky but the flavor was nice. I enjoyed the hot honey sauce on the chicken. The biscuit was harder than I expected it to be. I visited during Sunday brunch, a peak time for Paperboy. Thankfully, I was dining solo and was able to grab a seat at the bar. Be prepared for parking challenges and potential wait for seating during peak hours. The menu isn't overly extensive. I came in with my order already planned thanks to recommendations from fellow Yelpers and a few Instagram influencers. I ordered the Cinnamon Toast, which was delicious. It's stuffed with mascarpone that was light, fluffy, and not overly sweet. The only thing I'd change next time is asking for a lighter amount of mascarpone, as there was a bit more than I personally prefer. I also had the chicken, which was crispy, juicy, and well-seasoned. The honey drizzle added a nice touch of sweetness to balance the savory flavors. I requested the gravy on the side since I'm generally not a fan of gravy on my chicken. The gravy was fine, but it wasn't the standout component of the dish for me. One thoughtful touch I appreciated was that the restaurant had misters set up for guests waiting outside. It definitely helped make the Texas heat more bearable and showed consideration for their customers. I don't know what to say about this. The place is super cute, parking is whack. The menu is a bit simple but complex at the same time. First time bring here and the waiter recommended these items. I feel like I ordered the wrong items, or maybe a Texas Hash is not my type of breakfast food. I didn't expect it to taste like curry and I don't want to eat curry spices for brunch. 4/5 The fried chicken with biscuit is okay, the chicken was great, well done great seasoning. The egg was cook to perfection, the biscuit was dry though, and the gravy was a bit weird. It was more like a dressing than gravy. 3/5 Texas hash was sweet potatoes and pulled pork in what I can guess is like a curry sauce with lime, cilantros. I wouldn't order this again, we ate like 1/2 of it and didn't even togo home. Unfortunately, the overall experience was brought down by the seating. When we were seated outside, we were told it was our "lucky day" because the patio had fans. In reality, it was extremely hot and uncomfortable despite the fans, and there were pigeons constantly flying around the tables, which wasn't the relaxing brunch atmosphere we were hoping for. I am crazy about their brunch Brown butter pancake - I would be skeptical about places claiming they brown the butter and I can barely taste it. I am happy I did not have the issue here. Plus the pancake texture was great - crispy, fluffy and full of volume Orange blossom cortado was wild - I'm not a coffee person but this was done right. They use their in house orange syrup (probably orange peel and sugar like oleo saccharum). I got one to go too Chai was okay - they could balance out the earthy and spicy tones better The chilaquiles were absolutely delicious too - crispy enough to crunch in my mouth and yet soft enough from the salsa rojas (didn't get protein here). The poblano cheddar biscuits was the right amount of dry with flavor dust and moist on the inside. When we arrived and put our name down, there were two hosts at the front. one told us it would be an hour and 40 minutes, and another immediately said 2 hrs. We checked in to see how much longer it would be since the line seemed to be moving faster than expected. Even the people who arrived after us were seated already. They told us 40 more minutes, which honestly made no sense. Next thing you know, we were called 5 minutes after walking out. We were seated outdoors in a corner directly IN THE SUN while everyone else was in the shade. There were open tables in the shade, but yet we were still seated there. Paperboy is such a nice brunch restaurant!! My sister and I were in town and after reading the reviews, we decided to head there early. Even arriving at 10:30am, there was a wait of 45min-1 hour (based on my text messages, we actually waited exactly 45 min - 10:33-11:18) and by the time we left, people were being quoted 1.5 hours. Definitely arrive early! I do love that you're able to buy drinks outside, but my sister and I opted to go to Take Heart a block down, which is a nicely curated shop with home goods, kitchenware, and artsy items. I want to give a special shout out to Brittany C, our server, who was very friendly and gave us really good recommendations for menu items. She also learned that we were coming from out of town and this was our first time here and got us a complimentary cinnamon toast! She told us that this was their oldest menu item and they are known for it and honestly??? That was the best thing I had all day. That cinnamon toast was delicious! I'm all about textures and I loved the crunch of the toppings. You have to order this because it's so worth it. We ordered: Earl grey cold brew: loved it - great tea and coffee flavors that blended nicely. Texas Hash & Classic Breakfast: these portions are huge!! We ordered the Paperboy Pancakes ($12), Texas Hash ($17), Steak & Eggs ($28), and each got the Harvest Spice Latte ($7). + I would recommend the Texas Hash to any of my friends coming here! The roasted pork is delicious and falls apart easily. It goes really well with the sweet potato, making this a filling meal while not feeling too heavy. I wish for $12 it came with a second pancake, but it was still tasty. - I think the seasoning of the steak was good, but it tasted more cooked than medium rare. For almost $30, I would have liked more or thicker pieces of meat. The fries are really nice and crispy though. They have both indoor and outdoor seating - along with bar seating. Among my favorites are their chicken & biscuit, their texas hash, and the tasso ham & gruyère empanada. They also have a full bar with an excellent cocktail menu. The OG East location is staffed with an incredible team who are friendly, well informed, and attentive. Once we were seated we were served water, and the waitress told us the popular dishes. I tried the matcha latte and added vanilla ($1 up charge) and it was very good. I was finally able to visit Paperboy after hearing SO much hype about it---and funnily enough, it was today, on a day many Austinites were expecting to bundle up at home! I had a feeling it wasn't going to be that bad, so my friend (an East Coaster, who also thought the pending "storm" was too great to be true) and I planned to meet here for brunch and catch up after many months. Sure enough, when I arrived at 10, all of the inside seats were occupied or being reserved for larger groups. At least I got seated quickly, even if it was outside on the patio. At least they had a heat lamp right next to our table, and I didn't feel that cold at all. My friend soon joined and we both ordered the seasonal Black Sesame latte, an 8oz cup that I customized with oat milk. We also shared the biscuits appetizer and for my entree, I got the migas plate. I was expecting the biscuits to have a crustier, crunchy exterior with a warm, soft inside, but they were actually super soft from exterior to interior. I also needed the pepper jelly that it came with to sense any flavor. At least the biscuits were small so it did make a great appetizer. My migas entree came out fresh and warm, and I requested a side of ketchup even though it did come with a green hot sauce. My migas were essentially eggs and tortilla strips, and it also had a slice of avocado on top with cojita cheese sprinkling. It also came with tortillas but the egg mixture was just enough to keep me satisfied! I left warm and full and everything tasted great, though I am not sure why this place is overhyped to the extent that it is. Sure, the menu offerings are great and there seems to be some variety with seasonal offerings, but it reminds me of many of the other local brunch spot faves in Austin. This was my second time visiting Paperboy, and the business has grown a ton in terms of popularity. The first time, I got the Texas Hash and wasn't super impressed (3/5 for flavor and price). This time, decided to check out some of Paperboy's sweet breakfast/brunch options. We were seated at the shaded patio area upstairs, which made for a really nice, relaxing vibe. Our server was also very attentive. Paperboy Pancake ($12, 4/5) - More than enough to fill you up! It has a dense, cornbread consistency, which I personally liked. If you're someone who likes pancakes that are fluffy, though, would recommend trying other things on the menu. - Comes with brown butter and a bit of sea salt on top, with the usual side of maple syrup - Option to add blueberries or chocolate chips for $3 Earl Grey Cold Brew ($5.5, 4.5/5) - Made with oat milk + earl grey honey syrup - Really liked the earl grey flavor, and it was a nice complement to the Paperboy Pancake Also got to sample some of the cinnamon toast and strawberry & pecan pop tart, which were both tasty! This is such a nice place to go for brunch! I had the best bacon I think I've ever had out! It was so crispy and delicious! The pancake was so thick but had a lovely crust. It was so decadent and delicious! The matcha was perfect and the staff was so friendly! Couldn't recommend more! read more

Wanted to treat my son to the best brunch in Austin, according to fellow Yelpers! They were once again, spot on! Thanks Yelp community! It is really a nice little gem of a restaurant. We sat on the first floor patio. Had a very nice breeze and not very hot at all. There is a second floor patio we tried to get but was all booked up. From entering the front door, everyone was so friendly and so polite. We had a short wait which was not bad. We started off with a single empanada. It was so flaky and tasty and fresh! Truly homemade! The spicy sauce added a little kick also. Our wonderful brunch came out at a nice pace. I had the hash and my son had the chicken and biscuits. My has was a super large portion! I did ask for my egg to be scrambled and no kale and they made it perfect. The combination of flavors was amazing! A surprise in each bite! The chicken and biscuits was a nice large portion as well. The gravy mixed with the honey spice was just perfection. The chicken was cooked just right. The meat was very juicy! And the egg was cooked med as ordered. The staff from front end to our waitress went above and beyond for us and everyone we sat near. We will be back! read more

Austin, Tx. We walked over to the Eastside on a very cold morning with a wind chill below freezing. The place was packed inside so we accepted an outdoor patio (Downstairs) table. Not to worry, the propane heaters did a good job keeping up comfortable. We started out with lattes, served in a ceramic cup! Yes, they must actually have a dishwasher here, every thing is served on real plates, bowls, cups, and glasses! I was getting accustomed to paper and plastic cups everywhere in Austin. Oh yes, the lattes were rich and hot, a little on the small side though. The granola bowl was unlike any I've ever had. It was a bold concoction of delicious ingredients including the unusual (Cherry fig Jam w/whole Cherries) and the typical (A creamy yogurt and a perfectly toasted granola). Topped with fresh blueberries and perhaps a bit of olive oil, it was a delightful meld of flavors that made a typically boring dish very interesting. The Texas Hash was darn good. The pork was nicely done even if slightly salty. Nice potato's and egg too. Try a cup of Cheesy Grits, you'll be glad you did. The fresh orange juice was excellent. Paperboy is absolutely WORTH THE HYPE. The cheesy hash browns are 10/10. Perfectly crispy on the outside and great, cheesy texture on the inside. It's my favorite! The B.E.C. was great. I would definitely get that again. Every component complimented each other nicely. The chicken was good (great crisp and flavor), but the biscuit was less than spectacular. It's on the dry side. Despite it being busy, our food came it rather quickly! Our waitress was super sweet and had a great personality. We were seated on the rooftop and really enjoyed the ambiance! read more
