So I was experiencing a clogged right ear canal with slight pressure. It felt as if my ear was blocked and my hearing was extremely affected. I looked up this place, being new to Austin and my wife made the immediate appointment. They saw me instantly, which was a huge relief. The front desk staff was welcoming and very energetic upon entering the clinic. After meeting the doctor, I felt this was going to be a great experience. He welcomed us with great energy and concern. He inspected both ears to ensure I was ok and ended up cleaning out both ear canals. He was very attentive and precise when inspecting my ears and cleaned them thoroughly - painlessly. My right ear canal was worse than the other and he provided some ointment (medication) for the irritation. Overall a great experience and IMMEDIATE relief. read more

So far so good! I landed on Austin Ear Clinic and Dr. Slater when seeking a 2nd opinion for a stapedectomy procedure for otosclerosis. There are not many doctors in the area who can do this procedure. I can honestly say from making the calls and the visits I've had so far, I am very pleased! TO BEGIN WITH- the receptionist who took my initial calls and set my appointment was nice to work with and efficient at getting things setup. You'd be amazed how many offices I called that didn't truly understand that I wanted a 2nd opinion for a diagnosis I already had. I wanted to meat with more than just one surgeon and choose my steps wisely. When making calls I needed to know if there was even a doctor there who could do it and I needed them to get their hands on my CT Scan. I didn't need an appointment just to make another appointment. I wanted things in motion. From the point of arrival and check in, the nurse who took me to the exam room was friendly and knowledgeable about why I was there and the procedure. I also got a visit from the physician's assistant who was also friendly and knowledgeable. He told me more about the procedure and listened to what I had to say. Then came the doctor. Dr. Slater is very experienced at what he does. Because I was there for otosclerosis and my hearing is pretty poor, he was very patient with me. I had to ask him to repeat many times. I never felt rushed. I have since had another appointment there and things are likely moving in the direction of Dr. Slater performing a stapedectomy for me but we are also looking at other aspects as well. As much as I want my hearing fixed ASAP, I truly feel like Austin Ear Clinic is fully engaged in helping me hear better. They are looking at the bigger picture and I appreciate that! The office fit me into a busy schedule, the nurse was very caring and helped Dr Patrick Slater as he so skillfully removed hardened wax from my ears. I'm so delighted because now I can hear again! It may appear such a simple procedure but when you wake up over the weekend and cannot hear your husband talking to you, it becomes quite significant when sound finally returns to your ear!!!! In case you don't want to read every horrible detail about this doctor, I'll warn you now... do not book an appointment here! The reason for my visit is bcz my hearing loss is worsening so I booked an appt with Dr. Slater. I arrive at 2:20 for a 3:00 appt bcz I have paperwork to complete. One odd thing here was that one of the forms asked for my credit card to keep on file. Maybe that's some new trend but I sure the hell wasn't going to give them that. 2:45 I was pleasantly surprised when at 2:45 I was brought back by the tech to conduct my hearing test. This is where the pleasant experience ends and the weird experience begins. The tech's first question to me was "do I have any children?". Although that was a bit odd for a hearing test, but no big deal. 3:05 The tech finishes the hearing test and escorts me to a waiting area to wait to see the doctor. I'm there long enough for another person to come through that same process and be seated next to me. After 35 min pass, I ask that other patient if this wait time is normal. She says that it is. 5 min later, a med asst finally takes me to a room. 3:45 I spent the next 10 min telling the med asst everything that had already been written down on the forms I completed. Annoying but no big deal. 3:55 As he leaves the room, I ask how much longer before the doctor comes in. He says that Dr Slater is going pretty quickly today so not much longer. 20 minutes later the doctor arrives along with the medical assistant. 4:15 Finally, I see the doctor for my 3:00 appt. An hour and 15 min late seems too much to me. I know what you're thinking here: all doctors' offices run late. Well, I'm here to tell you that not ALL of them are like that. You just have to look harder for those rare ones that are well-oiled machines. There are actually a few Costco's out there! Here's where the most unprofessional dr experience of my life starts. He asks what I do for a living. I tell him that I'm an executive asst. He then proceeds to bash his own executive asst, which I have no choice than to be offended by asst He then asks for the reason for my visit. I start telling him and quickly realize that he is looking at his med asst and wants him to answer this question. Well, of course. Who better to say what is going on with me than some stranger who doesn't know a thing about me...oh of course, the medical asst. Shockingly, he got it wrong twice so I had to interrupt their discussion about me to clarify things as he went along. Okay, now proceed Mr medical assistant. It was so awkward and strange. Then they started this medical terminology banter. I felt like I was being talked about but in another language. As the visit proceeded, we continued to discuss details about what is happening with my hearing. As I was mid-sentence, a second medical assistant barges in to tell the doctor about something going on with another patient. Did he knock, open the door and say excuse me ma'am I need to speak to Dr. Slater about an urgent issue and have the doctor exit the room for a moment? Oh no. He didn't even wait for me to stop talking before he rudely interrupted my doctor visit. What's worse is that Dr. Slater was receptive to this and had a full conversation about some other patient right in the middle of my visit! That is definitely a first for me. I couldn't believe what was happening. It seemed as if this was normal for them. Dr. Slater suggested a CAT scan to see what exactly was going on. I'm giving him credit here for actually admitting that he was unsure about what is going on with my ears. He also suggested steroid shots for the tinnitus and hearing aids. He says that he sells them but you can also get them from places like Costco. Says they're cheaper but his customer service is better. Ha! His arrogance is blinding the reality that his customer service doesn't deserve Yelp's one-star minimum. I ask him what he thought my issue was: all I got was that something was causing inner ear pressure (I think). He shook my hand and said to come back if anything urgent happens, and I'll see you in a year. 4:20 I go to check out and wait for two minutes before someone notices me enough to open the sliding glass door. I then listen to the girl joke three times about taking money from me to pay off some dude's house. I know she was kidding and just having fun but I was so annoyed at that point that it wasn't funny. Especially when she almost charged me $160 before another person walked over and said no, she has a $35 copay. I finally walked out at 4:26. Saying that this entire office is highly unprofessional is a gross understatement. I only blame Dr. Slater, though. It's his practice, his process, his culture. I would have figured at his age, he's had enough practice to get things right. Unfortunately, that is not the case, and I will never return. One of these days maybe Yelp will make changes to allow someone to review with zero stars. read more

We had two appts with Dr Slater and are very disappointed in him and his office. Dr Slater is extremely arrogant and has created a culture within his office that cares more about protecting themselves than taking good care of their patients and doing the right thing. For our first appointment we arrived on time and had to wait nearly an hour to be called back. My husband was seeking care to remedy an inner ear issue that he'd had surgery on last year. In our initial meeting with Dr Slater we'd discussed this surgery in detail, gone over his past MRIs and CT scans, talked through all the previous types of therapy and medication we'd tried. We made plans to start a trial medication and return in a week. We had other follow up steps we were going to try next if the medicine didn't work. We left our initial appt hopeful that maybe Dr Slater could help. During our initial appointment Dr Slater said repeatedly that he was the best at what he does, at fixing the specific issue my husband was experiencing. We mentioned other doctors we were referred to and Dr Slater rolled his eyes and made comments about how we should have been sent to him first and those other doctors obviously referred us out of town because of ego and not wanting to admit he was better than them. He spoke down to the medical assistant in the room saying "you taking notes? always gotta be doing something" in a condescending tone. Dr Slater told us we should write a letter to the P.O.S. doctor that referred us out of town, said he'd do it himself, but it would mean more coming from us if we told him how disappointed we were in his lack of care. I was willing to look past all of this because I thought he could help my husband. I should have gone with my gut and chosen then not to return to his office for our follow up. We returned a week later for the followup. We arrived on time and this time got called back right away. But then we waited in the private room for nearly 50 minutes before the medical assistant came in. She asked us the reason for our visit. We explained that my husband was on a trial medication and we were here for the follow up to talk next steps. She took down some notes and said the doctor would be right in. A moment later Dr Slater came in. He sat down on his chair and began looking over the notes. This is where he lost us. After reviewing some of the notes he said kind of sheepishly..."uh, hmm, did you have some sort of surgery?" to which my husband replied ".... yes, we discussed that at length with you last week...." Dr Slater was silent and kept scrolling and then said "oh yea.... hmm...yeah she just didn't tell me" referring to the medical assistant that had just left. It was very clear to us that he was not prepared for our visit (a trend we'd seen one too many times from specialists like him). It was clear he didn't recall anything from our previous visit and must not have had good notes either. It was at this point that my husband and I looked at each other and nodded that it was time to go. My husband said, in a normal tone of voice, "I'm going to end the appointment here, let's go babe" and we walked out. We told the front desk on our way out not to bill us as we wouldn't be paying for today. I went home and after a little while I called the office to explain why we left and give feedback on our visit. The receptionist Kimberly took notes and said she'd pass them on to the office manager, Caroline. I asked her to have Caroline call me before she left for the day. Day ended, no call. I left a Google review, sharing about our experience. They responded. In their response they claimed that they had warned all guests about delays, that they were running behind. The problem with that was that it wasn't true. They didn't say a word to us about being behind schedule. In their response they claimed they offered all guests the option to reschedule, another lie. Then they had the audacity to say "Dr Slater was in the room for a little under a minute when the appointment was abruptly ended by the patient saying, "f**k this" and leaving" .... complete garbage and not anywhere close to the truth. Given Dr Slater was the only other person in the room I have to believe he is the one who lied about this to his office team after we left. Either that, or he's created a culture that encourages this kind of false narrative about their practice. Since their review response was posted I have called countless times trying to reach Caroline to discuss her response. I have left voicemails, notes with multiple people working the desk. She won't take my calls. She won't call me back. Yesterday their office told me she can't talk to me because I'm not a patient and I'm not listed as a person able to speak about my husband's care. Do yourself a favor and find another ENT/Otolaryngologist. This man and his practice don't deserve your time or money. read more

Dr. Slater as well as his entire office staff are incredible. I've been to three Neurologists and two ENT's and Dr. Slater is the only doctor who has helped me. I have POTS and have seen over a dozen other specialists for over a year and Dr. Slater took time to figure out how to treat me. Since I started seeing Dr. Slater last year, my extreme dizziness, blurred vision, head and ear fullness, and daily headaches finally started getting so much better. The other doctors only offered me medication to mask how I felt or said it must be depression. There needs to be more doctors like Dr. Slater who treat the problem instead of just trying to cover it up with drugs. I want to give Liz and Chris a shout out as well because they also helped me and are caring and kind. I hope to see Dr. Slater again as soon as possible. read more

I've had hearing, dizziness and migraine issues for years. I have literally seen a specialist in every field that would be able to help with these problems and have always been medicated and pushed along. When I say years - let's go back 15 or so. So it's been crappy not knowing if I'd wake up and feel good, if my head would explode, if I'd feel drunk or if my hearing would work. I met Dr Slater last summer. I already knew I had otosclerosis, so I went to him for his opinion and possibly surgery. He was very nice, sat with me for a very long time explaining everything he recommended and we scheduled the surgery. I had the surgery while I was awake . That was crazy. Of course I was on some serious meds but still crazy. The recovery for me was hell. I couldn't get out of bed for a week the dizziness was so horrible. But I could hear! Some time a week later I noticed my hearing didn't seem to be working. I had my follow up and sure enough it wasn't. Ugh - I'm that 1% that it didn't work on. We scheduled a follow-up surgery to make sure the implant was in place and hadn't shifted. Dr Slater again took his time going over the procedure and said he wouldn't do anything that would be traumatic to my dizziness or cause permanent damage to my hearing. I had the surgery and recovery was a breeze this time. Only felt off for a day. But still no hearing. At the follow-up Dr Slater and his staff were very apologetic and genuinely upset it didn't work again. They went through my records and tests and MRI and scans again and decided everything together seems like intracranial hypertension. Huh - never heard of it. I was prescribed Diamox and started feeling better almost immediately. The dizziness improved but not my hearing - honestly I'm ok with that. The dizziness has ruined my life over the past few years. Fast forward a month and I've had two steroid Injections and after this second one 5 days ago I feel new! Like I haven't felt in years!!! Oh my GOD! Is this what healthy feels like!?! Seriously I just wrote a book about this office but it's deserved. They are the first people to make me me again. I don't even know what to do or how to explain how well I feel. I was hit with a surprise bill which I feel was shady, competent, or just a complete lack of caring. Procedures I've had done recently: 1. Spinal injection - doctor checked with insurance and told me how much it would cost up front. 2. Physical therapy - they checked with insurance and told me cost up front. 3. MRI - they checked with insurance and told me cost up front 4. Dental work - they checked with insurance and told me cost up front. The austin ear clinic did ear injections on me. I asked about the cost and they said it was just a copay (a lie apparently). They do one injection, only charge me a co-pay. a week goes by the do a 2nd injection and only charge me a co-pay. Another week goes by they do a third injection and only charge me a co-pay. Another 2 weeks go by and I decide not to get a 4th injection because it's not working. Then they hit me with the bill even though they've known my bill has been stacking up and they said nothing to me. I complain about it and the lady turns into a robot and recites something that sounds rehearsed, "It's the patient's responsibility to check the cost of the procedures, blah blah blah". Stay away from this place unless you want to have to watch your back. These people just don't seem to care at all at the very least and there are plenty of doctor offices out there that do. read more

After being a patient for almost 11 years, I'm finally going to make the switch to find another ENT office who treats its patients with respect. I've had a mostly decent experience but the last week dealing with this office has been appalling. Recently, my hearing aids broke and twice I've had to call for some information and paperwork. Both times Liz answered the phone and has been extremely rude. The first time I asked for a form of clearance to get new hearing aids and she's barking at me "I don't know what that is?!" which I find ridiculous since she literally works at an ENT office. Second time I called today, she HUNG up on me as I was trying to explain my sense of urgency in getting this form. I'm unable to function in my every day life and this woman lacked the patience and empathy to even hear me out. I've never ever been treated this way from ANY doctors office. Best believe I will be reporting her lack of professionalism to her superiors AND you just lost a patient. read more

In July I had a cerebral angiogram to evaluate possible causes of my pulsatile tinnitus. The results were all clear, but at my follow-up appointment the NIR recalled that Dr. Slater at Austin Ear Clinic was running a study to evaluate a surgical intervention for PT. I was desperate for relief, if not answers, so off I went to another specialist. As the only otologist in Austin, Dr. Slater keeps a rather busy schedule. It took a few weeks to get in for an appointment, but once there I was seen quickly and had in-depth discussions about my condition with both Dr. Slater and Mr. Clark, one of his PA's. Dr. Slater discussed the surgical option, but wanted me first to be tested for intracranial hypertension since it's a contraindication to cranial surgery. Meanwhile, he promised to look over the results of my previous scans. So off I went to a neurologist for a lumbar puncture, where lo and behold I discovered that 1) I did have intracranial hypertension and 2) that was the root cause of my PT. Well cool, no surgery needed (hopefully). At the follow-up visit, we discussed the results and how it meant I couldn't/shouldn't have the surgery, but probably didn't need to anyway. We chatted about surgical methodology a bit and I informed him further on some other cutting edge work being done on the East Coast to diagnose and treat causes of pulsatile tinnitus. It was very refreshing to have a doctor talk to me like an actual intelligent human being rather than just a know-nothing layperson. Reasons for only 4 stars: 1) Even after I got the intracranial hypertension diagnosis back, Dr. Slater (or at least his audiologists) insisted I still come in for extensive audiological/balance testing. That was interesting in its own right, but was still 2 hours of my time and another specialist copay out of my pocketbook. So meh. 2) I didn't get the impression that he'd looked at my imaging studies, just the reports. I was really hoping to have another trained eye take a look at them, since sometimes radiologists can miss something. But, overall a good practice. Busy, but good. read more

I had an appointment today with Dr. Slater I heard great reviews on him but sadly I cannot agree because I never saw him. My appointment was 10 and I didn't leave until 12:45 and then I literally was shoved out the door and handed a bill . The PA told me that he had showed Dr. Slater my test result and chart and he concurred on treatment that was only explained with a piece of paper I was handed. I have never felt more disrespected than I have today .Needless to say I won't be back. read more

After reading on the website about the exam and the fact that I would be examined by a doctor who is a specialist in hearing, I made an appointment for 9 AM. I was on time but was not seen until 9:35 although the waiting room was empty and, so far as I could tell, I was the only patient in the office. I was given a hearing test in a sound proof room, although it was cut short when I complained that the masking sounds were too loud for my comfort. I found out later that I got an incomplete on the word recognition part of the test. After the test, I was ushered into a room and a PA showed me the results and suggested that I try a hearing aid for 30 days. He also noted that the doctor would be in shortly to examine me. The lowest price offered was $1400 and one with Bluetooth controls was upwards of $3,000. I mentioned that I am a veteran and may possibly be able to get hearing aid from the VA since some of my hearing loss is due to flying noisy airplanes in the USAF. At that point he seemed to lose interest, told me the doctor would not be seeing me after all, and showed me the door. I was able to get a copy of my hearing test. Since I was paying to be seen I do not understand why I was not seen by the doctor as promised. It appears Austin Ear Clinic and Dr. Slater are all about selling hearing aids and not about taking care of patients. Avoid this business. read more

All I can say for Dr Slater and his crew is they are AWESOME even the office staff. My daughter had been through 6 previous surgeries to repair her hearing loss from cholesteatoma in her left ear. The previous Dr said just get a hearing aid. Well that was not a good answer so after looking we found Dr Slater and made an appointment he reviewed past information and then told us he could do the reconstruction. Well surgery is complete and my daughter can hear out of her left ear without the use of a hearing aid. Thanks again this is an awesome group of professional people in this office and would recommend them to anyone that has a hearing problem!!! read more

Nobody is actually friendly and Dr. Slater had no bedside manner but they are all very professional. I needed a surgery 3 doctors had been hesitant to perform and very pessimistic about the outcome. Dr. Slater and Andrew (and Emerson) have worked with me for well over seven years. I have Ménière's disease in one ear and they have helped me both through shots and through teaching me how to manage when the attacks are at their worst. They have bent over backwards to assist me even on holidays. We are very pleased with them and value their opinion highly. They explain everything in detail. Dr. Slater has rebuilt my ear drum, sinuplasty and lots of ear shots. They are kind, compassionate and listen to their patients. Although Dr. Slater does not specialize in pediatrics. We took our two year old grandson to him for a second opinion. And, as always, Dr. Slater was absolutely correct in advising no second round of tubes in his ears. We are very satisfied with this office and with each and everyone of the staff. This company was chosen by a Tucson Arizona hospital to serve as the company to provide hearing screening for newborns. I have had the WORST experience ever with Dr. Slater's staff. They are extremely unprofessional, incompetent, condescending and rude. I have been dealing with this issue since August 2014. My insurance company covers hearing screens at 100%, however Dr. Slater's staff refuses to send the required forms to my insurance company to receive payment. The staff gives me a different story every time I call as to why its my insurance companies fault for lack of payment. I have had to tell them on 4 different occasions WHO my insurance provider is. The staff is demanding I pay out of pocket the full price and then work with my own insurance company to get a partial refund. Rose Ann is extremely condescending and refused twice to let me speak to the billing supervisor to get the bill resolved. I am extremely dissatisfied with Dr. Slater's company. I will be contacting the hospital I gave birth at and let them now they should consider a different company to contract for the hearing screenings. read more
