I stopped by here the other weekend to pickup some card holder cases, for my collectible trading cards. I had already tried Target and Wal Mart for such things to no avail so I figured I'd have to go to an actual card shop to get what I was looking for. What a poor experience, so much that I kind of laughed about it while I was there, but got P.O.'d afterwards. In short, they had the products I was looking for, but I had to kind of dig around to find them. The clerk (the owner?) just pointed me in the right direction but didn't care to help when I told him more specifically about how many cards I had, etc. Come time to check out, I didn't have any cash and he gave me hell about that, because I was only buying like $5 worth of stuff, and he won't make as much of a profit due to the credit card service charges. I told him that if I had cash on me that I would be glad to pay cash, but I didn't, and to blame the credit card company, not me. We're in 2010 - get with it. Either don't accept credit cards or put up a sign that says there is a minimum charge required (which I didn't see). In the end I got what I was looking for, but it put me in a bad mood for the next hour or so. I probably should have just taken my business elsewhere at that point, but I was pretty desperate to find these holders, plus I was hoping that he lost money on the transaction, or didn't break even, considering his attitude. Once upon a time when Bill Clinton was president and IH-35 was a congestion free highway, Austin Sports Connection was one of the big dogs in town when it came to sports cards, memorabilia, Beanie Babies (remember those?) and even video games. They had multiple locations around town and I frequently went there as a kid. Well, with the advent of the internet and the dying off of the sports card industry, many of Austin's baseball card shops have closed down. Austin Sports Connection (ASC) still remains though. They're now located on Burnet Road a couple blocks north of Anderson Lane and seem to specialize on sports cards (about 95% being 1990 and newer). They tend to carry all of the major releases, too, so if you're looking for the latest and greatest from Topps and Upper Deck, they'll likely have it in stock. Now, the only thing I don't really like about ASC is their strange pricing system (which they've had in place ever since I can remember). They sell a membership that offers discounted prices on all items, but it must be purchased every year. I think it's around $40 or something, but I've never been interested enough to buy it since there are other card shops in Austin that don't require a membership and sell for about the same price as the discounted price. Still, if you're looking for a sports card shop in north central Austin, and don't mind paying a couple bucks more, these guys aren't bad. Great place to overpay for already overpriced magic cards!

I wish I could rate this place less than 1 star, I really really do. I've dropped by this place a few times over the years and I have no idea why. The customer service is awful and the prices are much higher than comparative stores. The owner thinks it must be 1995 and that sales are still guided by The Beckett price guide and not ebay sales. My advice to all of those who want to step into this store is to take whatever amount of money you wanted to spend on cards and then flush it down the toilet. That experience will be much more fulfilling than walking into this store. Also, don't bother trying to talk with the owner. He's always too busy surfing to have a discussion with his customers or even say Hi as you walk in. Go to Card Traders of Austin for good service and good prices. read more

I went in to this store to find something my normal store (Card Traders of Austin) ran out of. I will never go back. The owner is a total jerk and didn't want my business because I typically choose Card Traders of Austin over his small, cramped shop. He treated me as if I was stupid and I wondered why he would, in essence, turn down money because i'm not "one of his customers". I was trying to become a customer but it seemed like if i didn't pay the ridiculous "membership" fee I was going to be treated as if i wasn't even there. I left without buying a thing and I will not go back if this is the only store left in Austin. The employees and owners at Card Traders of Austin are very friendly and will talk to you about anything. Its a nice organized store and its an actual FUN experience. read more

I feel the need to correct a couple statements in other reviews. Yes, ASC does have a 'membership' system. However, it's $20 not $40. Also, renewals are $10 per year. While this might seem odd for a sportscard shop, their discounts are worth it. If you buy just 2 boxes per year, it's paying for itself. Plus, they have very competitive pricing on supplies, which adds up. And their prices are fine even if you never join. ASC might have a reputation for rudeness, but there's a reason for that. If you lean on the glass cases after they ask you not to, or drop the singles all over the floor dinging a corner on every card, or put the commons back into the monster box out of order, they might express displeasure. But you wouldn't do any of those things, would you? If not, you'll get along fine. Also, there is only one other sportscard shop in town, Card Traders. Back in the early 90s, there were about a dozen, but only the strong survive. Sometimes ASC is priced a little higher on some things, sometimes Card Traders is. On new products, they are within a few dollars of each other, just like every other shop in the country. But I've seen Card Traders change the price of something in the middle of a transaction, especially since they started checking ebay more often. So there's that... read more

Stopped by this shop to look around and the gentleman there, who acted like the owner, when you asked him a question about if he bought cards started yelling about Obama and the democrats. He basically stated that if I was a democrat I could leave his store and he wouldn't buy cards until after the next election. I thought at first he was joking so when I asked again I basically got yelled at asking if I was stupid and I must be a democrat if I was stupid enough to ask the same question more than once. Worst customer service ever - I didn't want a political speech I wanted to look at baseball cards. read more
