The repair itself was done well and in a reasonable amount of time. A nice suprise was that the interior of my car was detailed, too. Not just new car smell...I mean $100 Delta Sonic level detailed. Nobody wants to get into an accident but this was seriously the best case scenario after having been in one! They made sure I was updated with the progress and my truck looks great now that the work has been completed! I had a bad feeling about it right away. And in the end, I was right--the telephone pole got me. :-( I grazed it while backing out, enough to do a noticeable ding. Nobody was hurt. I didn't damage any property of anyone else. Except for the bit of telephone pole lodged into my driver-side door. I shopped around online for a collision shop not far from home with decent reviews, and landed on Schmidt's. I liked how the majority of their reviews on Yelp and Google mentioned that they handle pretty much all of the insurance back-and-forth, plus do great work. I called them, and they could see my car right away, so off we went. After meeting with Schmidt's, we decided to leave my car there right then for them to do the work. The shop was clean. Everyone was very friendly. (One hrrrmmmppphhh, nobody was wearing a mask, but I was, and they stayed their distance.) I called my insurance agency to connect them with Schmidt's, and for the most part they communicated with each other, without me having to do much at all. It took about four or five days for the insurance to finalize the approvals, and another four days or so for Schmidt's to do the work. The nature of the work is a lot of applying, then drying, then doing that again, so I knew it would take a while. But when I picked up my car, the work was impeccable! No signs that my driver-side door was ever up-close-and-personal with a telephone pole. The paint was all blended just right to match the rest of the driver-side of the car, and my pinstripe was reapplied nicely, too. I have had horrendous luck with most automobile shops, still not having a good, reliable, trustworthy go-to mechanic. But when it comes to collision, if I ever need work like this again (and I sure hope I don't!), Schmidt's is definitely my go-to collision shop.

Waiting area story time: As I'm waiting in the waiting area, someone is having a phone call on speaker phone. That's not the most considerate, yes, but I don't know how long they've been waiting. One of the staff, then, hangs up a passive aggressive sign saying that people should not be on speakerphone in the waiting room. I find this rude considering the staff member didn't even address the customer. Just hung up the sign to guilt the customer outside. Thankfully, it's decent weather out. Also, the check in area is weird. It's a big opening and there are two desks. Instead of getting up to address people, you have to yell for the staff to hear you. And you have bad luck if two people are checking in at the same time. We were basically yelling over each other to be heard because the staff weren't getting up from their desks. Restructure the check in area so it's not so rude and an issue. Infomercial on the TV my entire waiting time. Ugh. If I need this service again, I'm just going to ask them to come to me. The office is not pleasant for reasons above. But I'm guessing their mobile service does much better.

That being said, I am giving them a 4 star review because of the communication I had with them. It took about 6 weeks to finish my car up because of some delays for the parts coming in. That is out of their control, which I understand. However, I was told for almost 2 weeks to "call tomorrow" and that the part "should be in our hands today". Obviously this didn't happen, and I felt frustrated being told again and again that the part is coming today and the car should be ready tomorrow. Overall I am satisfied with the work that they did and happy with the price of the service (even though I'm not paying it directly). It seemed like a fair price to a person who knows mostly nothing about repairing vehicles. Thank you Elmwood Collision!

Pinocchio riff aside, no lie, but plenty pun, there is about to be some horn tooting in here. And I don't mean from my car. I had been worrying out loud to a friend that I would get ripped off for my car inspection due this month. I knew that I had things that needed fixing given the workout I gave it over the brutal winter in pothole wonderland. A car savvy bud of mine had warned me about it, and I'd held off until now. I'm young and female, which has is a notorious combination for getting ripped off by mechanics. She suggested that I go to Red Star, which conveniently is right in my neck of the woods. So we called and set up an appointment for my day off, the man on the other end of the phone very friendly. I arrived worried to the shop Tuesday morning, sticking around in their lobby during the inspection. There is a couch and a large window that lets a lot of light in. He came back a while later to inform me that I did indeed fail, as expected. He even went the extra mile to show me video evidence of what exactly is wrong with my car, proving that he isn't a money hungry liar. In the past a certain auto shop of boys who may be peppy did not do this extra step, and I have been cautious against using them since, having been told I was probably taken for a ride. Dejectedly I asked if they did any of those repairs at their shop, which thankfully, they do. I paid for my inspection with cash (there is a slight charge for card which I easily used on my return visit) and made an appointment for the following Tuesday to get my car repaired so that it could pass. Within a few hours, I was texted quotes for what needed to be done to pass. These were incredibly reasonable quotes. I called my savvy friend, who agreed that this is the place to go. They seem to care about their customers (he even checked to make sure I had a ride back home on day two when he noticed I was alone, wishing me a safe walk) and promise to take care of things in a timely manner. I did indeed get my car back on the same day, with the tires topped off and new stickers adhered to the windshield. Maybe I ought to paint that red star of theirs gold, because I believe that they have earned it.

Dan was super flexible in getting the car checked out and giving me a price, then allowing me to drop it off in the morning a few days later to pick it up later that afternoon since my work conflicted with getting it fixed the first day I dropped it off. I was a bit late in picking it up due to a ride issue, which ended up working out okay because the part I needed hadn't arrived yet. I did wait a while in the shop to pick up my car, but Dan was nice enough to give me a discount on the bill. The extra time I spent there wasn't really a big deal at all. They also did my friend's head gasket and timing belt repair on his Subaru about a year ago at the same time as my last review and did a fantastic job for a really good price. More recently, they fixed a part of my friend's electronics in his car in about an hour or so. Overall have been having pretty good experiences here and the mechanics are always very open to telling you what you should or shouldn't get fixed. I send all my friends over to Dan the Car Man!
