Lots of people say they hate the car-buying experience, but I really mean it. Decades of past bad experiences contributed to that, but AutoNation Subaru has been a refreshing surprise. After I reached out through their website expressing interest in a new vehicle that was in transit to them, Lawrence Adamski responded with specifics about that car as well as with a suggestion to consider a comparable used care that had just come into the dealership. That car ended up being PERFECT for me (and saved me $$$), and Lawrence kept me updated on the status of that used car while I was waiting for it to be checked out and made available for a test drive. If I sent an email or left him a message, I could count on a prompt response. We set an appointment, and three hours later I was driving home. The finance person, Vincent Gross, explained the extended warranty thoroughly but when I declined it, I was not subjected to the typical guilt trip nor ominous warning. I can't say enough positive things about how pleasant and easy this whole process was, and I highly recommend this dealership if you're looking for a Subaru without the hard sell or pressure you might expect from other dealerships.

James was friendly, professional, and upfront with me the whole way through. It came down to the Honda HRV LX and the Honda HRV Sport (just a slightly fancier trim). When it came time to compare the out the door costs, I was pleasantly surprised with the numbers. Pretty much everything from the selling price to the doc fee to the state fees was right where I expected it to be. Even the money factor they gave me was acceptable to me based on my credit. This was after I had already looked at OTD costs for a Toyota RAV4 down the street and the numbers they gave me were totally inflated and the entire conversation consisted of so much back and forth between the salesperson and the manager. It took hours and I ended up walking away. At Honda, I told James I fully expected to have to put up a fight but he assured me they did all they could to get everything as low as possible from the start so there was no need for time-wasting back and forth. And based on my EXTENSIVE market research about this car, the numbers checked out and it seemed like a fair price. I know most of the negative reviews on here are regarding the service center which I can't speak to (yet) but if you are in the market for a new car, I can't recommend Honda and James enough. Thanks to the entire team here who made this experience easy and stress-free!

To be fair, my experience at Bill Kidd's could very well be a fluke too judging by the other positive reviews on here. So take what you will from this review and hopefully you have a better experience than me! I came in to have a routine oil change and the check engine light diagnosed. What was supposed to be a one hour visit, turned into almost two hours. In the end, I was quoted almost 3k to replace the front brakes/rotors, back brakes, replace the oxygen sensor in the engine, and fix the back brake light. Sheesh! I know my car is old, but almost 3k? I asked to just go through with the oil change and have the back brake light fixed before jumping to complete the rest of the recommendations. I walked out paying about $300 and half of that was just for them to diagnose the check engine light. Afterwards, I realized they didn't actually fix the back brake light either... The trouble is, the receipt they give you is like trying to interpret Egyptian hieroglyphics. They list out every single thing they recommended, the cost, and lump all the other services they *say* they did that day in the same list. From this list, it's hard to tell what service was simply recommended and what service was actually performed. Ultimately, I chose to go to a different auto shop down the street who didn't charge me a penny to diagnose the check engine light. I ended up paying half of what Bill Kidd's estimated for the same services (for reference, Bill Kidd's estimated fixing the oxygen sensor for around $600 and the other place did it for $370). Plus, it didn't take nearly as long.

The standard offers were laid out but he accepted that I knew what I wanted. In the finance office I dealt with Josh who was very personable and we had a great time exploring our shared musical interests which really helped the mundane process of the 175 signature blocks. I'm absolutely positive that everyone there met me with a smile and nobody was afraid to stop and have a conversation with me about the music we were listening to while I waited. The vehicle price was listed on Auto Trader, then I reviewed the listing on their website. We set up the appointment and visited the dealer. A sales rep allowed us to test drive the car, then offered to repair the minor issues we found. The car itself was a five year old car with 69k miles on it. It was in very good condition. The price listed was competitive. After the test-drive, we went into the office with the sales rep. We told the rep we were paying "cash" (check) and would not be financing (they encouraged us to finance and said we could pay it off early, but after questioning we found out that the earliest payoff would be 6 months). Anyway, the rep disappeared into the other room for a while, then cam back with a sheet of paper that had the advertised price with SEVERAL OTHER LINES OF LARGE FEES added to it, including "certified vehicle cost" and a handful of other fees. These fees totaled $3,547 dollars on a $21,999 advertised sales price (over 16%)! I don't have a problem with sellers/dealers adding reasonable fees, so long as these are CLEARLY disclosed (without "hiding them in very small print or on pages you have to click hyperlinks to get to). THESE FEES WERE NOT DISCLOSED ON THEIR WEBSITE OR AUTO TRADER's website. I am not an experienced used-car buyer and the next time I'm in the market for a used/pre-owned vehicle, I will be sure to ask those questions before visiting the dealership, but such tactics are not honest. We left the dealership without purchasing because now the price went from a "good deal" (per KBB) to a fair/poor deal. I wasted 5 hours of my life on this bad experience. So why am I giving the rating a "2" instead of a "1"? Because other than the failure to disclose the 16% ($3.5k) "markup", they were nice people, particularly the sales guy. But that decision was not made at the salesperson level (at least not without the knowledge of executive management/ownership). A manager/supervisor who came over the desk after the salesperson summoned him said that this was a regular practice. In my own line of business, this is not considered "normal", honest, and a good business practice! TOTAL HONESTY/INTEGRITY is always the best way to run a business! I did end up purchasing a vehicle from another source, and I'm very happy with it (the TOTAL prices was clearly noted!). So what did Hampstead gain from that? Maybe they sold that vehicle for the price they wanted, but in the long-term, those advertising/business practices rarely work out in business's favor!
