Just loved this salon! I needed my roots done, as I have an event this week and couldn't wait for my regular hairstylist. Because this salon got excellent reviews, I decided to try it. I love the way you call them and they text you back. So so much easier to send a text than to talk to someone on the phone especially when there's noise in the background and people are busy. I got a text from Candace right away and she squeezed me in on a Saturday at 12:45 PM. She was so nice and friendly. I absolutely love my hair after she colored it. I decided to return to have her color my hair in the future. The salon is beautiful. She offered me water or coffee or tea which is always a nice touch. I've visited a few times, Megan, Nicole and Katie have all addressed my various hair needs. I've done trims and even longer to pixie, each cut spaced out to fit my growth. They've helped me when I'm at a loss for words, deciphering my hand moments and concerns for misshapen hair, weird patches of thickness and even a bald spot I was growing out and hiding. They didn't make a weird face when they combed over it and didn't adjust their tone. Simple gestures such as these go a long way. I usually want my hair to be more feminine, thinned out, and cut in such a way it doesn't feel so blah. They honestly care to know what's going to make you feel the best. I recently got my hair done by Candace at Ava Lane and I was devastated after the result. I saw many positive reviews about the salon and felt confident about Candace's abilities as my mom has also been going to her for a while now. I am naturally dirty blonde so with a shadow root my grow-out typically looks quite good even after several months. The stylist that I've been going to for years is always able to give me the highlights I desire despite the time it's been since my last appointment. Unfortunately, he's in Oregon (where I attended college) so I've been searching for a new stylist that's able to execute my hair the way he does. My experience with Candace in the salon was great. She was kind and the salon was pretty and clean. That said, when she revealed my hair I wanted to cry. I had asked for platinum highlights, specifically stating that I did not want my hair to be honey yellow or grey, just a bright and beautiful PLATINUM blonde. If that was something she didn't feel she could personally achieve, my hope would be that she would express that to me before continuing on with the appointment. My hair was the warmest it has ever been when she finished. It felt healthy and looked shiny, but it was not AT ALL what I had asked for. I tried to keep myself from getting too upset, telling myself and her that maybe with different lighting outside of the salon I would like the result more. Unfortunately, that was not the case. My roots looked dark and borderline orange. Every person I showed after leaving the salon agreed with me so I decided to reach out to her to explain how I was feeling and ask if there was anything we could do, even just take a look. She said no. I spoke with several stylists who all said they believed what happened was that she took my foils out too early which inhibited my hair to lift to what it needed to. I had to pay another stylist to correct the issue and give me the creamy platinum highlights I asked for. She did an amazing job and my hair looks exactly like what I wanted and what I've always been able to get from my stylist in Oregon. That said, I felt like I needed to reach out to Candace again to ask for at least some of my money back. She denied that request as well. As the owner of the salon and someone who claims to have been doing hair for 20 years, I am disappointed by Candace's unprofessionalism and frankly her laziness. Her attitude is disappointing to say the least and her inability to consider her clients' feelings is shocking. I would recommend looking elsewhere when considering Candace as a stylist. Overall takeaway: it's not always about what is or is not possible but what the stylist is or is not personally capable of. EDIT: After my experience I was told by others that Candace was known to pay a fee to get negative reviews wiped from Google. I have found this to be accurate as the review I left for Ava Lane (the same review posted here) is no longer public on Google. I find that to be incredibly misleading, fraudulent, and honestly scary. Had I been able to see ALL of the reviews others have left her I would have been able to make more of an informed decision before trusting her with my hair. My hope is that others are more diligent than me and check here as well. Additionally, in response to her message back to me - the conversation she implied that we had about a "lightening journey" and how it would be a process is convincing but, unfortunately, inaccurate. She never said any of that to me during our incredibly brief consultation at the beginning of the appointment and had she I would have left the salon and looked elsewhere for services as I know what I asked for IS achievable (again, I have been getting my hair done this way every 5-6 months for YEARS as I get a shadow root and have naturally BLONDE hair). The images of my hair were taken the same day as the appointment and six days following the appointment, not a month later. That's just how insane my roots looked when she finished my hair. Ultimately, what's confusing to me is why a business owner thinks responding in this way and doing whatever she did to get my honest review taken down is in any way demonstrating competence, professionalism, or good customer service. It's clear in our correspondences that she never once offered to make anything right in any way or even just validate my feelings on an emotional level as a paying client. Anybody who works in this industry and has any sense of empathy can come from a place of understanding and wanting to make it right. At the end of the day, she may believe my hair is beautiful but it's MY hair and I'm disappointed. The fact that a professional stylist with all of the experience she claims to have doesn't get that is pretty telling. All anybody has to do is consider this review and her response and they'll know that she is not a stylist they'd want to entrust. read more

DISASTER - worst hair cut ever! When my regular stylist had an emergency and I wanted a trim before travel, I thought I'd try this high end downtown salon. Don't let the classy ambience fool you. I showed the stylist a photo of the length I wanted and brought some curlers so she could see my hair would need to go around those curlers. Apparently she didn't pay any attention. I got my hair done by Shelby and I am SO happy! I'm naturally a dirty blonde and wanted some highlights, as well as an under cut. I've never had an undercut so I was a little nervous. And in the past hair dressers have gone a little to heavy handed on the highlights, even when I've asked for subtle highlights. Luckily for me Shelby really knows what she's doing. During this pandemic, my balayage grew out about 5 inches, so I was in absolute need of a touch up. When I found out Grace was taking clients again, I reached out to her. This hair salon is adorable and full of talent! Katie has been doing my hair for almost 10 years and I've followed her around many different salons, with Ava Ln. being one of my favorites! Katie takes the time to understand what look you're going for and has the technique to master it! She's made me blonde, red, brunette, and purple, and has cut my hair at all lengths, all of which I was very satisfied with. The last time I saw her I let her do what ever she wanted with my hair and she gave me soft highlights framing my face with a cute messy short cut that requires very little maintenance. I love it! I do not spend much time on my hair/makeup normally, but she helped me take my limited inspiration and turn them into something fantastic. She was responsive to my feedback from my trial run and my hair and makeup lasted all day, through heat and sweat and tacos! Shannon has been doing my hair for a couple years now and she always does it perfectly! I get a low maintenance baylayage and she blends it so well that I can go six months or more without any obvious color outgrowth. She is kind, attentive, and has great communication skills. I will go however far I need to for a fantastic hairstylist. I have traveled all over the Bay Area. I spent 5 years going to different parts of San Francisco to stick with an amazing stylist who became a close friend, then she retired. I returned to an old stylist I saw and that ended the same way it did the first time, with her no showing our appointments. I then found Ava Ln. My 20th wedding anniversary was approaching and we were going away for a week. I did a consultaion and the stylist said I know the perfect person here for you and that is how I became a client of Eliana. I have now been seeiing her for almost 2 years she took me from being a redhead to Icy blond and I am in love with it. The cut is superb and I am at the point where we just look at eachother and I we make suggestions and then I say.. "it all sounds good, do whatever". Not only is she superb and masterful in her hair skills, she is also very knowledgeable... sharing information with me about how to take care of my hair to get the optimal results, magazine worthy quality hair. I had the best experience with Candace at Ava Ln. I had gotten my hair cut a few weeks prior and the Stylist completely butchered my hair. It was one of the worst cuts I've ever seen. When I contacted Candace she responded right away and took great care of me. She asked a great deal of detailed questions and was so attentive to my answers. I usually feel somewhat awkward sitting in the chair and having to make conversation for an hour, but she was so approachable and easy to talk with. I'm sort of a midwestern trashbag and I've been working in food service in SF for a long time now, so this place is full blown not my style. But I needed my hair done well, so I made an appointment while being a judgemental jerk, fully worried that I was going to feel uncomfortable and awkward here. But sure from the start my hair was going to turn out well, so I went with it. Turns out I was totally comfortable, had a great conversation with my stylist, Grace and wasnt overwhelmed with too many people (turns out sundays it's really mellow, so that's the way to go if you're worried about a crowd). I loved this place, its clean and cute and welcoming, everyone I interacted with in the process of setting up the appointment and actually going was super nice and my hair turned out great. My stylist first off, actually listened to me, and understood what I wanted better than I could verbally explain and dyed my hair a fantastic natural color that blended my roots with my former faded box color and cut and styled my hair how I wanted it, which I explained in about as vague a way as you can imagine. She didnt force product into my hair (I hate that, it makes my hair feel gross for me personally, and ever hair dresser I've ever gone to has insisted on it) and she understood that I dont style my hair straight and offered to rewet it to diffuse it or let it dry curly. I have been coming to see her for at least 5 years after never wanting to even get a cut for fear of getting a chop instead of a cut. It started off with "I just want a trim" to "do whatever you want" she knows how I like my hair, also how I hate high maintenance hair. She always listens to what I want and then tells me what would actually work for my hair without so much maintenance. I love being able to just sit back, relax and let her work her magic without the worry of the outcome! I saw Melanie to get a cut and color. Prior to seeing her, I'd been seeing the same hair stylist for 6 years whom I was very partial to, but he's far away. After living in Sonoma county for a few years I decided it was time to try something new. The prodigy girls come in to my work in Petaluma which is how I found out about the salon, and I was always struck by how kind and pleasant they are! Melanie worked with my complicated schedule to accommodate me before an important event, and she completely nailed how I wanted my hair to look! Not only does it look amazing, but it feels healthier than it has in years and it's so shiny! She also recommended an arsenal of products to me and offered me a sample after using them on my hair.
