Avalon Exchange is a consignment shop in Hingetown. Their second location is in the Coventry neighborhood. Both neighborhoods are pretty eclectic adding the perfect backdrop to this shop. This was my first spontaneous visit to Avalon to see what treasure may await me. AMBIANCE: The perfect marriage of thrift and vintage with designer finds. The store is divided into men's and women's apparel. Designer finds are neatly organized at the entrance. Don't expect to find thrift store chaos here, everything is neatly filed into sizes. INVENTORY: Apparel, accessories, designer purses, and lots of shoes! You won't find home goods or decor here. You will find way beyond the online shop inventory. You can easily build a fashionable outfit here for you next night on the town - Hingetown and beyond! I was most drawn to the furs and lingerie-type dresses at this shop. Oh, and men's shoes, so many of them! Prices start at $3 in the sales bucket. I saw reasonably priced dresses well under $15. SERVICE: The store staff all welcomed me in. It was a very pleasant experience. I also witnessed them engaging in friendly conversations with other customers. I did not purchase anything due to the store carrying a very limited plus size inventory. It's a well set expectation at most thrift and vintage shops due to procurement difficulties. There were probably five pieces labeled XXL that looked smaller than their size. I wear between XXL and 3X, so they just wouldn't work for my body type. So peep this: My daughter and I had some free time so we decided to head over to Avalon in Ohio City. Now we aren't new to Avalon at all... been shopping with them for years at their former location in Lakewood. But anywhoo we walked in and the 2 chics at the counter just looked at us and kept on doing going through clothes. I was like oop... excuse me! Now if anyone has checked out my other reviews you will know how much I dig Superb CS, not Subpar. But anywhoo I took a few mins to walk around and whaaat another worker in the back on her phone laughing. Ok cool... don't need her help anyway. But she could have still looked up to greet me. She did tell my daughter how pretty she was so I guess she looked up long enough to catch a glimpse of a customer in her presence. So yea, I'm bored talking about them but the vegan meat of this review is this... Stinky Customer Service and old yucky looking clothes. Who accepted them? Who thought someone would want these pieces? I am a vintage clothes lover and I loved nothing here!They had some overpriced luxury items in the case but nothing to drool and whip out the card for. I am not a super big fan this year. Every time I come here the employees seem to have better things to do than say hello. The clothes are not up to par lately and the store has an odd smell. I like this shop better two years ago. Shoe selection was also crustyyy. Im not sure whos buying their resale clothes lately but I think a new strategy should be put in place. read more

Don't bother. They are rude and do not understand or know labels like free people/ joie etc. they do not offer much at all for high quality

I came in here in the middle of the day on a Wednesday only 2 hours after they opened and nobody answered the phone so I decided to come in and I came in with a couple shirts and some jeans and they told me they couldn't buy anything (it was around 2 o'clock and they supposedly stop selling at 4 o'clock) which didn't make sense so I feel like they just lie and that's trash business. While I do not come here too often I am a big fan of their semi annual Dollar sale. Twice a year they stock their sale racks with hundreds of items for just a $1. I make sure to stop by both days as they restock the racks throughout the weekend. Apart from that I do not frequent too often. I'll stop in if I'm looking for a fresh look but do not want to pay too much. While sometimes I find something to fit what it was looking for I often do not. I think that the staff is great the store could use a bit more selection and maybe a slight drop in some of their prices. I would say if you are a thrift store or bargain shopper its worth a visit. read more

Yay first review! I love this place! I come here to sell my stuff all the time, bc my closet is overflowing and I love having a constant flowing stream of new outfits. I've sold things back to here that i've bought and I've bought a bunch more stuff. Coventry location is bigger, better. More miss than hit. They have some cool Salvation Army type clothing but way more expensive, overpriced. Check out Coventry instead if you have the choice. read more

The inventory at this Avalon is really hit or miss. When I find pieces I like, they're usually from Target, H&M, or brands from Kohl's. The prices for these have been WAY too aggressive, more than 50% of what they probably were originally at these stores... Two years ago. The vintage pieces here are sparse compared to the amount of newer used clothing. When I find vintage pieces I love here in my size, they're worth the splurge. Their pricing is high, but I've had nothing but friendly, helpful service from the employees! I know their regiment of buying clothes is notoriously ridiculous. If you're expecting to make a little cash or earn store credit, think again. But if you're casually shopping without a specific piece in mind, you have a decent shot of finding something at this Avalon. read more

I shop here often and usually end up with some cute pieces. I like the idea of bringing in some gently used items, and trading them in to keep my wardrobe fresh. I typically just use the trade to pick out more things, as you get more in store credit than cash. My advice to you is to wait until the tall, tattooed gentleman is working though. If you have interesting pieces, he is your guy, as I feel he's the only one with an eye for fashion forward attire. Not to sound harsh, but the last time I went in to trade, the girl working seemed bothered that she even had to get up from her stool to help me. Not to mention, (and I say this because I work at a fashion boutique myself) she didn't appear as somebody that even wants to work in retail, she looked dirty, like she took no pride in her appearance whatsoever. That aside, she only picked out the most "basic b*tch" thing I had, disregarding all of my barely worn, expensive vintage reproduction dresses and pin-up wares. I realize that isn't everyones taste, but I do buying at my own store, and you cant just pick out things that are your own personal style. Perhaps if I had brought in ripped up mom jean shorts she would have selected those? At the end of the day, I will continue to shop here because I generally do like what they offer. I've come to this store often but the last two times were frustrating. I shop in men's and I've found holes in a few items. I go to thrift stores like goodwill and value world and find the holes as well. But this is a higher end thrift and it's unacceptable to find such quality. On 12/01 I tried on a pair of Hollister jeans still with tags on. I checked them over and found a hole right where a Hollister security tag looked to have been. They also smelled extremely bad of smoke. If your buying clothes from people then how can these things be missed? read more

I love the layout of this store- consignment shops can easily be overloaded with stuff, but Avalon Exchange maintains it's boutique appearance by carefully curating its collection of clothing and accessories. They have a great eye for everything daring and funky- reminiscent of the wardrobe of "RENT." If you're style is relatively tame and subdued, you will probably not find something here to suit your fancy. My only beef with this store is their pricing. A clearly worn sweater from Khol's should not cost $15 in my opinion. I understand paying a little extra for true vintage pieces or high quality brands, but if it's a shirt from target or forever 21, it should cost $5 or less. read more

First and last time I will go. The sales associate was so rude I left. My boyfriend decided to shop and when he cashed out the sales associate was also rude to him while he was making his purchase so he won't be back either. I was shocked at the quality of their clothes. They seemed extremely dated. The store manager needs to clean house and get some friendly staff in this place .... I love Avalon. The employees are great and the prices are about 30% of retail (I checked). One of my most recent purchases was a awesome green dress which I wore despite the freezing weather. You can bring your pets in the store (which I plan to do when the weather warms up). I've been in the malls and the swanky stores and they just don't have the variety (or the prices) that Avalon does. I don't care what the trends are, I have my own style. I used to shop at the thrift stores but even after months of going almost daily the items I wanted never showed up. At Avalon you have less to look through and a higher chance of finding what you want. Thrift store prices aren't always dirt cheap. For example I purchased an Ann Taylor Blazer from the thrift store for $9 (the original price would have $150-200), in addition I paid 12.50 to dry clean it...that comes to $21.50. In Comparison the Express blazer from Avalon was for $14.50 (retail price approx $100) and I simply steamed it at home. read more

This place is great! We usually go to the Coventry store but my BF purchased a north face shell jacket, some men's winter Uggs and a few other items over the phone so we made a trip up to Lakewood (from akron) and they did not disappoint. Both of the chicks there were friendly, helpful and patient (we were there a little past closing time). Jess was the one who assisted us and she was very down to earth and personable! She even threw in an incentive for our trip! All in all the trip was worth it. I was here with some of my friends looking to start our summer wardrobe and Avalon was starting to tuck away some of their fall/winter things for next season. While we were in the dressing room, my friends and I were laughing and chatting about something while trying on the clothes we picked out. One of the girls who works here came into the dressing rooms and very rudely told us that if we didn't plan on buying anything and was just using this place as a "hang out spot" then we should leave. I was very disgusted and left without buying anything. I would give Avalon one star but, it is very organized and clean. Plus, they have good styles. Having been to the Coventry location AND Lakewood's location I gotta say, Lakewood's Avalon Exchange is by far more appealing to me. Last weekend I went into Coventry's location and did find great buys but the quality for some reason just wasnt up to par with the clothes in the Lakewood location. I get it... It's a resale shop, hence no complaint from me at all especially for the prices they offer.... but I follow the Lakewood store's Instagram page and not only is it clear what they post is in phenomenal condition, but their consistency and customer service is what will have me coming back for more. Although I've purchased in store at both locations a few times, for the first time yesterday I bought over the phone after seeing two things on the Lakewood's location IG. Not only was it a super easy process, but the deal on got on this LA Coalition leather jacket was not to be passed up! Every single employee in that store was helpful, nice, and full of good energy. Amazing selection of current pieces as well as an interesting array of vintage. I had a lot of fun shopping in this store! The music was great and the employees were both helpful and interesting people to converse with. I picked up four basic tops as well as an amazing Theory blazer all for a great price. The store has a modern feel of a boutique you would see in NYC or San Francisco. I've definitely needed a place like this in my life!!!!
