Apparently I haven't been to downtown North Tonawanda in awhile because I didn't know this place opened up over a year ago. It's small, but has a great assortment of exotics including frogs, lizards, snakes, and tarantulas. I didn't find what I was looking for today, but I talked a lot to the owner. He was very friendly and informative, and it was clear the store takes good care of the animals, which mostly come from local breeders. It was nice being able to easily see all the tarantulas and not worry about their health because they had appropriate housing. Plus they were labeled with both their scientific name and their common name, which is always helpful. Great shop. I'll be back. read more

Had bioactive 4x2x2 enclosure made for my bearded dragon by the owner and my dragon immediately perked up in terms of activity and liveliness! He explores every corner and it is like a nature preserve for him! Heat and uvb right on point and many built in ledges, logs, hides etc for him to help regulate his temps! Reptiles done well! Decided to stop by and check out the shop while we happened to be in the area. The entrance was a bit difficult to find and the parking situation isn't the best but once we got inside I was pleasantly surprised. There are tons of really beautifully put together frog tanks. I didn't see any prices on the frogs however. They had some other reptiles available as well. There was a decent selection of supplies and Pangea gecko food. The 2 people working were friendly and offered to help us find anything we needed. read more

This is one of, if not the best exotic pet stores in WNY. I don't mind the drive out to Avalon because these guys CARE you can see it in how well kept the store is! I started going there after recently getting two ball pythons and I can't see myself going anywhere else now. They do breed their own rats which is pretty important to me as they aren't just selling you whatever comes in from a supplier. Very knowledgeable and happy to share information, it never feels like you are being pushed into anything you don't need for your pet! Prices are extremely fair as well for feed, pets, and equipment. Honestly this store is a little hidden gem for those that own exotic pets. They locked me in as a customer when I brought in my 3 little girls, and they just went out of their way showing them animals/reptiles and giving them little facts about each one. They didn't need to do that, but that's the type of people they are. The store is run for the love and passion of the animals and its extremely visible when you walk in. An exceptional experience! While exploring Canalfest I gratefully came upon the entrance to Avalon Exotics; I never knew they existed. I had recently set up a vivarium but had not yet obtained its occupants. I am glad I talked to John first. Unlike other exotic pet stores in the area that I had visited, John spent a considerable amount of time with me trouble shooting issues I had with previous vivarium attempts. He helped me identify issues that I had not thought of and had a variety of solutions, most of which were quick fixes and cost nothing. I discovered that the animals I had previously obtained for vivariums were toxic to each other. Instead of buying their stock from suppliers across the country, they breed most of what they sell and will even introduce you to their breeding pairs. John offered me books from his private collection demonstrating a true dedication to our success and to the health and safety of the animals that he sells. I am presently listening to a chorus of dart frogs which are safely pared with a few Mourning Geckos, all in a perfectly balanced tank.
