Avelo airlines is inconsistent with its baggage fees. They state they allow a free personal item brought on board, I.e. a backpack that fit under the seat. My outbound flight from New Haven to Ft Lauderdale I had no problem. On the return flight the gate agent said the back pack was too big and charged 65.00. The backpack was not too big and was packed exactly how it was on the outbound flight. The gate agent was rude and insisted I will be charged. I contacted Avelo customer service 4 times and requested a refund for an inappropriate charge. I included pictures how the backpack fit under the seat. After 4 attempts they finally responded and said they will not refund the 65.00 and their decision was final. Even if I escalate this that won't make any difference. I believe Avelo is randomly charging passengers unnecessary fees. I have heard about this from friends that have used this airline. Also, they are very unorganized. For example I paid 60.00 to place a bag in the overhead bin which is totally wrong in my opinion !!! I paid on their app 2 days before my flight and when I got to the airport at the check-in counter they asked if the bag was paid for.It didn't reflect in their system. I needed to search for an email to prove I paid for it. Luckily I found the email and they cleared it, or I would have had to pay again. When I got to the gate the agent questioned it again. Why isn't their system reflecting payments that were made on the Avelo app? It is so wrong for an airline that is making billions in profit to be nickel and diming passengers. Flew a DIRECT 2 hour flight from Nashville to New Haven and upon receiving my luggage at the terminal, my bag was badly torn and punctured in the upper right corner. When I submitted a claim, the response I received was impersonal, and told me that because I didn't submit a claims within 4 HOURS, it was invalid. If this was a flight that contained layovers and multiple baggage movement, I would maybe understand a little bit. Like I addressed before, this was a direct flight with my suitcase being put on the plane, and taken off the plane. There was no need for excessive force for my luggage to be destroyed as much as it was. I wasn't even home in a 4 hour span, and submitting a photo for review was difficult because they wouldn't accept a standard photo size of 1.6MB. By the time I was actually able to, the response and lack of responsibility for my damage was completely brushed aside. Not to mention, on our flight down to Nashville was delayed 8 HOURS, causing us to miss a whole day. What happened??? I have flown with Avelo for @4-5 years and had good experiences until Monday, December 15th. What a nightmare! Our flight was booked for takeoff to FL for 7:30 AM. We were in line to check our bags from 5:30 AM until 7 AM. We had to stand outside for an hour because the line was so long, and it was 15 degrees outside. There was only one employee checking people in until @6:30, when someone else joined her. The woman checking people in started yelling at all of us in line (basically 4 flights of people) to have our IDs and boarding passes out or we'd miss our flight! Like it was our fault the line was so slow! No apologies for the delay, no explanation, nothing to de escalate the disgruntled customers. Because it took so long to get through that process, there was no time to get coffee or a snack before boarding. We then had to sit on the plane for over an hour while the plane was de-iced. When we finally got up in the air, nothing was offered to the passengers. No coffee/tea/water. No snacks. Two of the flight attendants literally looked like they just rolled out of bed. TO ANYONE CONSIDERING BOOKING A FLIGHT WITH AVELO: Dont do it. Avelo Airlines has very questionable business practices and terrible customer service. While they do offer cheap flights and direct routes, the overall experience Is not worth the savings. Honestly paying an additional $200-$300 for a more reputable airline Is a much better option. Avelo's refund policy is particularly restrictive, only allowing the original passenger to reuse credits, regardless of who booked or paid for the flight. And be aware, the airline charges extra for checked bags, carry-ons, and does not offer drinks or snacks, with the exception of water. The airport staff were very pleasant and helpful, but phone support was unresponsive, unhelpful and even hung up on me at one point. The airline's claim of cost savings for online checked bag payments is also misleading, as the fee remained the same. I would NEVER recommend Avelo Airlines to anyone and am relieved that they will be departing from BDL soon, as they are likely the worst airline in existence within the US. Absolutely no leg room!! My husband's knees were pressing into the seat in front of him. The seats do not recline. I had recent cervical spine surgery and sitting upright the whole trip was painful. I couldn't find anywhere that this airline let you know about this. If I knew the seats didn't recline I would have choose a different airline. I had a 5:25 flight on 4.11.25. I arrived very early per the notifications I kept receiving. My flight was delayed 2 times. I was finally able to board after speaking with the attendant about pre boarding for a disability with my minor child. We were the 3rd & 4th guest in line. She's scans my boarding pass and says I need to get out of line and wait for the "supervisor". More and more people were be sent to wait with us. He said due to mechanical issues we have a smaller plane and your seat was eliminated. I was quite emotional as I was traveling to see my son who is being deployed. Another woman's mother was dying. This "supervisor" lacked empathy and compassion. He was yelling at people and threatening them to kick them out for just trying to find out what was going on. He walked away in haste and dam near knocked me over. He told us we were bumped based on the time we did online checkin. I believe this is false as I checked in at 5:25 on the dot. He said call customer service. I have been on hold with them since he started talking. It's now been 2 hours and 5 seconds still no answer. All I know is I paid almost $900.00 and Avelo has in a sense stolen my money. I left work early, my son who is a teacher left early the day b4 spring break, he wasted his gas to bring me. I was stranded at the airport with no info, no transportation and no house keys. I also have a hotel rental in Nashville I can't cancel!!! By the the " supervisor" Chaevon told us we should've gotten an email by 10 AM. If that is the case and Avelo knew they should be fined or something. This airline is very unimpressive you may or may not find parking spots because almost all of them are taken and if you're trying to reserve a spot they are usually all taken. The airline is usually not so clean and the window cover is plastic so they can break easily. On the morning of Wednesday, 1/9/2025 I was scheduled to fly from New Haven to Fort Myers. Upon arrival at the airport two and a half hours before departure, this small airport was packed with people. The line for security was wrapped around the terminal. After hours waiting in line with only TWO TSA checkpoints, I, and other passengers, arrived at our gate only to be told the flight had been closed, even though the plane was still at the gate and our luggage was going to Fort Myers without us! The gate agents were of no help and we were told we would have to go on Avelo's website to file a claim regarding the whereabouts of our luggage. I don't know why we weren't called up in the security line, as has been done in the past, so that we could make our flight. The public address system at Tweed/ New Haven cannot be heard. Later that morning I was able to get a flight on Breeze to Fort Myers. Upon arriving at Fort Myers I found out that Avelo has no baggage office for luggage that has arrived without being claimed. Through the kindness of an airport volunteer, my suitcase containing my clothes were found in an office that had no connection to Avelo. Unfortunately, my golf clubs were nowhere to be found and Avelo only have staff at the airport 2 hours before they have an OUTGOING flight! I arrived on a Wednesday and the next AVELO flight was two days later on Friday. The purpose of my vacation was a golf holiday and I lost two days trying to retrieve my golf clubs which were finally identified as being at Fort Myers on Thursday. I believe they arrived on the original flight but no way to find that out for certain. On 1/19/2025 I filed a complaint on Avelo's website about my experience. I received an immediate email stating that my complaint has been received and someone from the airline would be in touch with me shortly. Today is February 1st and I'm still waiting. I have sent four follow-up emails to them with no response. I could go on and on about this experience! I will never fly AVELO again. By the time you pay all their extra fees for luggage, seat assignments and carry on bags you're not really saving much money. This is the most customer service FREE business of any kind I have ever used. They postponed my flight hourly until they finally cancelled it, leaving me at 11 pm with no way to get a hotel room or rental car. No one was manning the counter with helpful or any other kind of help. I was abandoned by them to fend for myself in an unfamiliar area. this is so much closer to home then JFK and LaGaurdia, new haven tweed is a quite small airport with not much airlines just avelo and breeze. my flight was from new haven- atlanta which was a 2hr and 1 min flight. this airline is underrated not that much expensive, the luggage was severely delayed having to wait about 90 mins for my luggage from the plane at atlanta. this airline often makes smooth landings, this airline needs a terminal because there was a lot of going around at ATL to find avelo. some employees who work for avelo are unpleasant and rude (quick reminder, i recommend and don't recommend you fly for avelo.) read more

PLEASE READ BEFORE BOOKING! Originally I had high hopes for Avelo coming into Tweed New Haven. It was going to make air travel more convenient and without the fuss of traveling to bigger airports. I have flown Avelo 3 times. My most recent time, Sat Nov 26, (thanksgiving weekend). I was to fly from Orlando to New Haven, Flight XP-720. We boarded the plane for our 3:45pm departure, then sat on the tarmac for at least 30 minutes before taking off. 1 hour before our flight we were told that we were turning back around to Orlando Airport due to "low gas issues". I thought it was a joke. We were already 1 hour into our flight and needed to fly and hour back to the airport we just left. (It is confirmed the plane did leave the state of Florida, made it to Georgia and turned back around). We were asked to deboard the plane and were told "the issue would be resolved in an hours time and to just hang by". Well, 4 hours passed by, no updates via text/email, online the flight still said it was on time. It was now 10pm and come to find out the engine failed and only then found that our flight home isn't happening and the next flight to CT is Monday. So were we are, stranded in an airport and we can't get home until Monday. We were advised by Avelo staff at the airport that we would be receiving an email "if we haven't already" about our next flight home. And will also be refunded for our tickets, his name was Russel and I spoke with Mary on the phone who also seconded that. No one received an email, we all called on Sunday to figure out our next steps home. So we could either pay top dollar at $500/flight to fly into NYC/Boston/Hartford or wait until monday. Avelo would only give up to $150 for a hotel credit, mind you it is a Saturday on a holiday weekend at 10pm at night, all hotels were way over $200. I am a nurse, I missed work and no one seemed to care about anyones well being, we were all left to fend for ourselves. So here I am Monday, after paying for 2 $40 shuttles to the airport now, inconveniencing family to drive 1.5 hrs to pick me up in the airport and pay $20 in tolls and Avelo will not compensate for anything. Since I flew Avelo back home on Monday Nov 28 apparently I will not be receiving a refund for my flight or even for my inconvenience. None of us will be because "you cannot fly for free". We will be receiving a $75 travel voucher, that isn't even half of what I paid for my flight. If we choose to fly a different airline into a different airport (paying $500 for a last minute ticket with another airline) only then would we have received a refund for our ticket. But the thing is Avelo is the only airport that is flys out of New Haven, all of our cars were parked in New Haven, if we flown to Hartford or any other airport we'd be 1-2 hrs away from our car. Avelo had the opportunity to make this right. It was a holiday weekend of travel. A packed full plane and they abandoned us. They showed no remorse. Granted, issues happen all the time that's one thing but how they address issues says so much about the company. $75 voucher to travel back on this airline is the last thing I want. I spent 10 hours in the airport on that Saturday and now am still spending my time fighting for only what is right. A waste of not only money but my time that I can never get back. read more

First of all, I want to preface this review by saying that I love Avelo Airlines and thank you for flying direct from RDU to Albany. The planes are comfortable, on time, and most importantly affordable. My only complaint is with their iPhone app, which last night could not retrieve my boarding pass - this happened to a number of passengers and we had to get paper boarding documents at the gate. I had to fly from CHS to HVN for my grandmothers funeral, and my uncle suggested Avelo. Non stop inexpensive flights. I booked online and for the flight up I chose the standard seating. I'm 6'3" and I don't recommend doing that if you're over 6'. For the flight back, I upgraded for more legroom, and it made all the difference. So much better and more relaxing. The flight up and back was smooth. Bring your own snacks and drinks from the airport. They don't do in flight anything, which helps keep the costs down. Plane left on time from both locations. Overall, no complaints and would suggest this for anyone of my friends or family looking for a non stop flight to any of the destinations that they fly to. read more

It was good at one point for convenience and value but at this point both of those points are moot. TSA takes so long you have to leave early enough that you could easily drive to another airport and get through theirs instead, and not have to be packed into the hallways like sardines waiting for hours because they said you were going to board in ten minutes when the plane is still in Florida.
