What an unexpected gem of a find in the middle of the redwoods!! My friend and I stopped by Avenue Cafe for a late lunch as we were driving along the Avenue of the Giants. Neither of us had super high expectations for this meal, but we really enjoyed our meal. It wasn't super crowded when we arrived on a Wed afternoon around 3 pm. The decor is pretty casual. I think I saw an outdoor patio as well, but it was too hot outside, so we sat inside where there was AC. The menu features a range of foods such as soups and salads, sandwiches & burgers, pasta, pizzas, and calzones. I was impressed by the variety. I got a meatball sub and got the soup of the day - minestrone - for $15.95. My friend got the chicken parmesan sub + onion rings for $17.95. I don't know if it's because we were hungry or what, but both of our subs tasted so good. The meatballs were tender and flavorful and I loved the bolognese sauce on top. My friend agreed his chicken sub was amazing too. The sides of minestrone soup and onion rings really hit the spot as well. I would love to come back and eat here again! Was really impressed by the food.

I came here as it was very close to my cabin and I'm very glad that I did. We ordered a supreme pizza which was absolutely delicious and filling. We also ordered their garlic fries , which had a bit too much garlic but tasteful overall. We added some beers to our order- which were also very tasty. Overall, I enjoyed this place and the service by our waitress. The views were great, the food was delicious and the experience was worth it. We will definitely come back again when we're in the area.

Great place to stop by after biding the avenue of the giants. Quick service. Ordered the French dip and sweet potato fries. Tasted good plenty if table and enjoy your food while listening to the rock music.

Great selection of food in a small town. Their sub and day of the soup was great! The service was quick and they were very helpful. The overall ambiance and food experience was amazing!

I forgot to take a picture but the gluten free pizza is amazing! Seems like they might make their own gluten free pizza dough? I got the flying pig but with grilled chicken instead of breaded and it was super good. We also got the Bigfoot burger (not on gluten free but the do have gluten free buns and bread) and I was told it was amazing. FYI none of the fries are gluten free, though. They're all coated in flour for crispiness. We also had cider, of course, and that was good. Very relaxed vibes. It was a beautiful evening so we sat on the patio which is where everyone else was and it was a great experience.

awesome spot off the 101 to grab dinner. we were staying in phillipsville so this place was quite convenient to that small town just over, which had food places that closed earlier in the evening. buffalo wings were pretty solid. bigfoot fries were so delicious, with pulled pork, cheese, green onion atop seasoned fries. the meat lasagna took us out. it was so big, idk why we ordered so much food but we ate the leftovers for brekkie. lasagna was probably the best thing, sooo well made with layers of deliciousness. corn chowder hard pass. we thought the server had a "humboldt" accent lol. we were asking about beers and she said people love the "blurberry" and we looked at eachother like "wat" and realized the beer is actually called "blurberry" hahah. it was so good, but hella strong. nice local fruit cider. would surely come back here when i'm in the area. it's nice to sit outside by the big trees. fun place that's bigfoot themed! lots of deco.

My friends and I stopped by Avenue Café for lunch after a morning of hiking and travel to Miranda, CA, from Sacramento. We were starving, and this spot hit the mark! The café is small and wasn't busy when we arrived. The service was very friendly, and the portions were much bigger than expected. I ordered the tortilla soup, garlic Parmesan chicken wings, and sweet potato fries. The tortilla soup was hot, flavorful, and perfect after a chilly hike. The sweet potato fries were also tasty. However, while the chicken wings were cooked well, the garlic Parmesan sauce wasn't appealing. Overall, a nice spot for a hearty and satisfying meal!

Along the Avenue of the Giants is this gem of a cafe with home made hamburger patties and seasoned to perfection fries. Stopped by here while on a visit with some friends from out of state and we were not disappointed. We still talk about how this was one of the best meals on our trip! The owner who was manning the bar and takeout counter was real friendly and down to earth and talked about the Sasquatch folklore that pervades the area which was interesting.

My wife, her mom, and I, all like burgers so figured this would be a good place to stop. Our cellular service did not work here, so had to use the info I had downloaded in Google maps to know where to stop. It ended up being pretty good. Hours are daily 11:00 - 20:00, so we arrived just after it opened and were the first ones. There is two areas for outdoor dining: a large set of picnic tables near the chimney tree as well as a patio at the restaurant itself. We soon realized that a cat was roaming the patio, looking for food, so we decided to eat inside, instead. It's a one man operation, with the owner fulfilling multiple roles. After we orders and paid, we got a pager to notify us once the order was ready. Everything is prepared fresh, so it took a bit of time. But because it was served hot, everything tasted good. I love a lot of toppings on my burger, so the self-serve topping bar was great...was able to put as much lettuce and pickles as I wanted. The 1/3 hamburger ($12.99) came with good fries . My wife got her plain cheeseburger 1/4 cheeseburger ($9.99) and enjoyed it. Her mom got chicken strips basket ($13.99), and upgraded her fries to be curly. We all shared each others fries, and the curly fries were really good. Drinks are cans. I didn't want to risk having a milk shake, but from all indications, it sounded good. We ate our meal at the counter. Afterwards, the owner suggested we walk across the parking lot to visit the Living Chimney Tree. It's free to enter, and is hollow enough for a person or two fit in. There are openings on both sides, so easy to take some nice pictures.

I ordered the lost coast burger and with tax it was $20. It came with a small portion of broccoli coleslaw that I really liked- and thankfully my two companions did not so I got a triple portion. The burger was fine. Not the greasy smash burger experience I was craving, but it tasted fresh. Served on a ciabatta roll... from Costco? Unconfirmed, but that's what it tasted like. I would have preferred brioche or something more fluffy. I ate every crumb because post hike hunger. I wouldn't come again though. The service was good and everyone was nice- just overpriced for the product, IMO. The outdoor seating was nice and it looks like sometimes there is live music. The bathrooms were gross. Smelled horrible and dirty. There is a campground or some sort of rv park right behind that may also be sharing the restrooms.

The Village Pub at The Vi, Ferndale, CA…read more We almost walked away.... We'd been in and out of The Vi over the years, back when the building was clearly the best thing about the place. And that building deserves better than that. If you've never been to Ferndale, this Victorian is the centerpiece of the whole town. The main drag ends right at its front door. Walking in and looking at the original woodwork, that hundred-year-old bar, the staircases, the paint, it's a genuinely remarkable space. We just stopped coming because the food and drinks couldn't keep up with the room. What brought us back? A new menu. Five egg white drinks. My wife spotted them and that was enough. It's our anniversary, let's give it one more shot. We sat at the bar and ordered two whiskey sours. What arrived looked beautiful, but no foam. Turned out they were out of egg whites. That's a tough moment when it's the reason you drove to Ferndale on your anniversary, and my wife didn't hide her disappointment. The bartender was gracious, offered to comp the drinks, offered to make something else. We said no, we'd drink them. And honestly? Even without the whites, the craft was there. Ice cold, properly made, genuinely delicious. The bartender knew what she was doing. We ordered food and settled in. The farmer's lunch came out first and stopped us both cold. Sliced salami, a small cured sausage, three clean triangles of aged cheese, two thick golden toast points with a rosemary sprig tucked into a pool of herbed butter, and a generous pile of pickled carrots and onion with whole peppercorns. In rural Humboldt, plating usually means they slid it toward the table and called it done. This was intentional, centered, composed, magazine-worthy. Twelve dollars. We looked at each other like we'd found something. Then something happened that we're still talking about. The new owner, Jason, moved here from Nashville and brought a lot of that culinary energy with him. He'd been watching the whole egg white situation. He sent his bartender back over with an offer: could he interest my wife in one with egg whites? She said she thought they were out... Turns out, He'd gone to his house, which is in the building, and gotten fresh eggs. That's the kind of thing that turns a meal into a story. She got her whiskey sour. Proper froth, ice cold, executed right. Exactly what she came for. The mood shifted completely. We ordered dinner. She got the Oklahoma Smashburger, two smashed patties with caramelized onions spilling out the sides, American cheese melted clean, everything packed into a buttered and toasted brioche bun with handcut fries piled around it. That bun had a shine on it. I ordered the steak frites, flatiron, medium rare, pre-sliced and blanketed in a thick au poivre sauce with chopped parsley, a mountain of handcut fries alongside, and a ramekin of housemade dill ranch that had no business being that good. I want to be careful about how I say what I'm about to say. That steak is in the top five I've eaten in fifty years of eating steak everywhere I've ever traveled. I've had a 35-day dry aged tomahawk, I've sat at Niku in San Francisco, Stark's, The Palm in Las Vegas, ate from the hands of Bobby Flay & Morimoto himself so i know a great steak. This flatiron, at $32, belongs in that conversation. I didn't expect to find a top five steak again. I thought I'd already hit that ceiling. It's right down the street from my house. Jason came out to talk, thought we were travelers since no one recognized us. We told him we live in the next town over. He seemed genuinely happy to be here, proud of what he's building. You could see how he runs the place. Hire people who can shine, then get out of their way and back them up. That bartender was carrying the bar with real confidence. The chef came out and you could see in his face that it meant something to hear the food was landing because the Vi is now something. The building always was, and now the inside can finally match it. If you're in Humboldt County and want a real craft cocktail, a kitchen that's paying attention, and an owner who will literally go get you eggs from his own home on a Saturday night, this is the place. We'll be back. Often. Cheers and Well Done!
