We've driven by so many times but never had time to stop. This time we camped right across at Standish Hickey State Park (don't recommend this campground if you have a large rig or mobility issues as the river is down a steep trail). The Peg House has a cute gift shop, general store with booze and basics (famous brownies and ginormous cookies!) and next door is the outdoor restaurant. It has a great vibe, owner took out orders and you KNOW by the taste and food service how much love and thought goes into this place! We had: Grilled Chicken w/brie Bigfoot Burger Classic Cheeseburger All came with coleslaw and that was great too! We plan on making this a pitstop from now on. After 50 miles of thru hiking I was ready for a burger! There is nothing like post hike hunger. Understanding that you are pretty out there in location and ingredients are better quality but... this place is expensive. And they do not have fries. I ordered the lost coast burger and with tax it was $20. It came with a small portion of broccoli coleslaw that I really liked- and thankfully my two companions did not so I got a triple portion. The burger was fine. Not the greasy smash burger experience I was craving, but it tasted fresh. Served on a ciabatta roll... from Costco? Unconfirmed, but that's what it tasted like. I would have preferred brioche or something more fluffy. I ate every crumb because post hike hunger. I wouldn't come again though. The service was good and everyone was nice- just overpriced for the product, IMO. The outdoor seating was nice and it looks like sometimes there is live music. The bathrooms were gross. I found this place on Google as a lunch stop, and I'm glad that I did! As others recommended, the salmon burger and bbq'ed oysters were delicious. The oysters I want to say were grilled right up to when they are just almost cooked through - so it's not dry and overdone, but juicy. I had three of the oysters, but we initially ordered a dozen and my husband and son wanted another dozen after we were done with round one! No road trip along the Avenue of the Giants is complete without a stop at the Peg House and maybe Standish Hickey across the street. They have a great selection of local beers on tap, grilled oysters and excellent burgers, plus live music and a convenience store / souvenir shop. You can even buy local plants for your native garden when you get home. read more

Great stop for travelers with pets! We stopped at The Peg House on our way to the Avenue of the Giants, and we're so glad we did! This hidden gem sits just off Highway 101, so it's easy to find. All of the seating is outdoors, with plenty of shaded spots -- perfect for relaxing without baking in the sun. There's even a stage area for live music. We stopped by on a Monday evening, so no music that day, but the atmosphere was still wonderful and laid-back. When we went to order, we were greeted by incredibly friendly staff who immediately offered our dogs some treats (always an A+ in my book!). Their burger and sandwich menu had so many tempting options that it was hard to choose. I ended up with a burger topped with jalapeños, while my partner went for one with bacon. The burgers were amazing -- the meat was tender and juicy, practically melting in your mouth. The toppings complemented everything perfectly, and the bun tasted fresh and fluffy. I also really appreciated the coleslaw -- not overloaded with mayo like most. My partner loved his meal too. We've decided this will be a new tradition every time we're in the area! Pro tip: Don't skip the gift store right next to the eatery. Pick up a Train Wreck cookie, Rice Krispy treat, and a brownie -- they're all incredible. Never Don't Stop is The Peg House's slogan and my family finds impossible to just pass by. The place has been there forever and a day and yes, the restrooms look like it but the overall charm of the little shop and the incredible food wins our faithfulness. never not stop. this place is a random oasis in the middle of the redwoods. rootbeer floats, harris ranch beef burgers with heirloom tomatoes, beautiful flowers and live music under a peaceful canopy of trees. it'll always be in my core memories. additionally, there is a little store with literally anything and everything you'd ever need or want. i like how the campsite across the street, standish hickey, literally has a trail dedicated to visiting this store and restaurant. and the service was so friendly like you're in a small town or something. can't wait to come back again next summer :) read more

I love stopping here when traveling through the redwoods. Years ago I was staying by myself at the campground across the street and didn't feel like cooking - I walked across the street and had the nicest time. There is a fun little general store with lots of gift items to browse through and then there is the big patio with a stage and most every time I've been there, there has been live music happening. There is a little food truck to get burgers etc. I have celiac and they were very knowledgeable as to what was safe for me to have. Be sure to save room for the delicious berry sundaes! Very disappointed with the service. Not sure if the staff was not trained properly or just rude, but overall bad experience. We came in and specifically asked if they could do to-go; the lady said yes. We requested that and left a tip as well for our takeout order. The food came out, and it was not in to-go boxes... When we asked, they gave us two tiny sheets of tin foil and ask us to self-wrap ours... when they obviously had to-go boxes (we saw another order coming out). We asked if they could put our food in a box like that and they coldly said "we charge for that"... Then went ahead and made us pay for the boxes. Never not stop at The Peg House Yes, as a marketing cynic, I don't buy that motto -- and then I experienced The Peg House in Leggett. Further south of Garberville, there are even fewer dining options. Don't think you have to stop here out of desperation. You'll want to stop here for myriad reasons: After leaving the coast and the PCH, the in-land temperature is hot during the summer. All outside seating with umbrellas and canvas shading provides some relief... but the iced NA beverages also help. Live music (one musician mid-day earlier in the week, a band mid-day on Thu when we stopped again). Doubt these musicians will have a tour stop near you any time soon, but this was a wonderful extra here. Love the menu with meat, fish and vegetarian options. (Note: don't touch the vegetables growing along the side of the dining area). For the record, not a slaw fan -- but I enjoyed the small portion and the slice of juicy watermelon that accompanied my order. Polite window service happily answered questions about the semi-gourmet menu and noted adjustments to our orders. They do a fantastic job slaying the demand when it gets busy. Bring a good attitude and resolve to ENJOY your break at The Peg House. Don't expect fast-food prices because there's only one location. You can support the general store as well. It features somewhat mass-produced pies from somewhere in the region. Note: within walking distance on the same side of the road is the trailhead for a good post-meal hike outside the state park, whose gate and parking lot are located across the highway. read more

Such a cool spot off the highway in the middle of the woods. They seem to have live entertainment on select days but we stopped by right before they closed so we missed it. Even though we were the last meals of the day they did NOT hold back. I had the Veggie burger with vegan cheese. The bread is perfectly toasted and so soft inside. It's a hexagonal shape which makes it perfect for gripping as you devour the burger. The coleslaw side is also really good, not too mayo-y or vinegar-y and really refreshing. Wish we could have stayed a little longer to check out the attached store. They also have a really cute plant nursery (or something with plants) outside. Traveling up from the Bay Area on a business trip, came here based on a recommendation from a local coworker. The restaurant was behind a gift shop off the main road. If it weren't for the recommendation, we would have never considered coming here. So glad we did though, the burger was excellent. It was one of the best burgers I've had. What a lovely surprise! We were starving after our adventure at the Drive-Thru Tree and on our way to Shelter Cove! My man wanted to go somewhere else, but I found this place on Yelp, so I said, "Hey, let's just check this out. If it looks bad, then we'll leave!" We could smell the wonderful aroma of food from a grill as we drove towards the restaurant. Is that from the Peg House? We were still miles away! But as we got closer, we realized it WAS from the Peg House! How exciting! It was raining when we arrived, and it looked like a grocery store. However, when we walked in, we were enticed by the menu. The lady said the restaurant was around the back of the store! OH! It was a bummer because there was only outside seating. There were many seats on the stage as well as under a tarp. Well, at least some areas protected us from getting drenched! My man and I shared an Apricot Brie Sandwich. It was more like a burger with brie and sweet apricot jam. It didn't matter, though, it was sure damn tasty! The kids also enjoyed a cheeseburger and a hot dog. Whoa, that hot dog was HUGE. My daughter could only finish half. We were so impressed by the food that we returned after exploring the Avenue of the Giants. This time, my man and I shared The Lost Coast burger. I'm a sucker for a burger with feta cheese and bacon. "Never Don't Stop" is their motto, and it is rare that we drive past (usually because it is too late). There are very few food stops along US-101 between Ukiah and Eureka, and none of them match Peg House. The grill outside churns out some seriously good grub - killer burgers, great BLTs, a memorable Reuben, even a delightful hot dog. No fryer, though. The store has at least one of everything - great cookies and brownies (fresh daily) right by the register. Live music in the garden throughout the summer and maybe beyond. I was skeptical! But there wasnt any other place along the 101 that had much ratings so we decided to give it a whirl. Im super glad we trusted and went for it. The little backyard is super cute with a bunch of flowers and it felt like a sweet little picnic. We both got the cheeseburger and honestly, we both felt like it was a home cooked at a family reunion. The beef was grassfed and the ingredients were super fresh and crisp. I think some of it came from their garden. Its farm to table taste was so worth the stop. Now I get their slogan "never not stop".
