It's cheap and the the pedicures are usually adequate but the rudeness, judgmental attitude and generally ill mannered staff make every visit unpleasant if not torturous. The operators seem to be talking about the clients and seem to think it's okay because it's a language we don't understand. Even when I tip 25 percent there is a silent but threatening attitude as if they were cheated and there has never been a thank you. I don't like being intimidated and for the last few months have only left a 15 percent tip for a not very good pedicure. Good service will get a bigger tip- not intimidation. The floor is often dangerously wet and a helping hand for older patrons would be appreciated. I had a bad experience at Avenue Nail Spa today. This was my first visit to the spa. I was greeted very warmly by one technician but was assigned to another technician that was very cold and didn't even say hello. The first issue was the water in the basin was cold. I had to ask for Hot water. Next she didn't allow my feet to soak before starting the pedicure. I told the tech (older lady with short hair cut) that I just wanted her to scrub my feet well and didn't want a foot or leg massage. As I wanted to get rid of the skin on the side of my Big toe. The tech just swiped my foot a couple of times then proceeded to massage my legs after being told that I wasn't interested in that service. The nail color I chose (OPI White) was thick and she used acetone to thin it out twice. I asked if she could get me another bottle and she said "no, there are no more" and there were literally 4 other bottles on the shelf. I didn't say anything further. The color on my toes are literally a yellow/beige tinge. I was given a very poor service. My feet were not soaked. My feet were not cleansed. She placed soap on my feet and put them in the basin. The skin on the side of my Big toes was not removed or buffed away. She just gave a few lack luster swipes. No lotion or cream was offered or applied. The manicure was lack luster as well. I did state that I would need to pick another color for the manicure because the other color was so thick and dried out. I've never received such bad service. Avoid the nail tech named Mary at all costs. At least I think that's her name. The name tag was really faded, & I see why she wouldn't want to be identified after the horrible service she provided. My first experience here a few months ago was great, & that's why I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1. The nail tech I had the first time was friendly, attentive & made me feel relaxed. Mary was the polar opposite. She was rude, hostile & I wanted to punch her in the face by the time she was done. When we got to the spa, the manager told us there would be a 20-min. wait. All of the massage chairs were taken, and when one opened up I let my friend go first. I was sitting at one of the manicure stations when Mary came over & tried to start my manicure. Maybe I'm just anal, but I didn't want to get my mani before my pedi. I've never had it that way before. I was wearing boots so I told her I was going to take them off so I wouldn't ruin my fingernails later (after the mani but before the pedi). It made sense to me, but she gave me this blank stare like she had no idea what I was talking about. A minute or so into the manicure a massage chair opened up, so I started to grab my purse & boots. Mary snatched up my belongings while shouting, "I'll do it!" Ok... Once in the massage chair I reached for the remote to adjust the settings to my liking. Mary leaned on top of me - no exaggeration, she put all her body weight on me - jerked the remote from my hand & said, "I'LL DO IT." At this point I'm in a mild shock. She got to work & pushed my cuticles back so forcefully, I had to tell her she was too rough. She rubbed the sea salt scrub on my legs for all of 10 seconds, then hurriedly swept the hot stones over my legs. Most nail techs gently tap your leg or open their mouths to speak when they want you to switch feet, but Mary preferred to slap my leg or grunt & point. She pumiced each foot for maybe 5 seconds. It was the shortest, sloppiest, most unsatisfying pedicure ever. Instead of leaving calm & relaxed, I left angry & tense. My friend had bought me a gift card for Avenue Nail Spa, but I unfortunately left it at home. This means I have to return, but you better believe Mary will never lay a finger on me again. read more

So this is my second time here and once again I left unhappy. I moved to Oak Park from Chicago 6 months ago, when I went to Avenue the 1st time. I get fill ins and pedicures every two weeks, and I have been getting my nails done for over 15 years so I know what to expect. After the 1st visit I left with lumpy polish, sharp corners and crooked tips so I swore I would not go back. Staring at poorly done nails for two weeks is super irritating so I have been driving back to Bucktown for 6 months, which has gotten to be inconvenient. So...I decided to give Avenue a 2nd chance. Sorry to say, there has been no improvement since my last visit. Same issues as last time except this time I had to go back to the nail tech after I looked at my nails at the dryer because 10% of my nail on either side had no polish on it. In addition, she put the top coat on so fast that there was only top coat on about 70% of each nail. After I asked her to touch it up she painted a line on each side, getting polish on my fingers that she did not remove, leaving a visible streak of polish on every nail. I've had no-chip, nail art, and even went through an acrylic phase----coincided with my vinyl pants phase, good times, goooood times----so I'm always trying out nail places. Avenue nails has a few perks: instant service, cheap, clean, and great polishes. Whenever I need my nails to look good and I need them done quickly,this is where I go. Seriously, mani-pedi out the door in 30 minutes. Sometimes, that's exactly what I need. But then there are some downsides: super fast service often means super lame service, "extra massage" is nice, sort of, but then you don't get the actual massage so that additional 15 minutes is really not additional to anything! Plus, there is definitely a hostile infrastructure there---I keep expecting the dear oompah loompahs (said in reference to the girls' smocks, I like the girls there) to revolt and drown out the endless Food Network loop. Clearly the workers were talking rudely about customers. the woman next to me was an older woman and the person working on her nails asked her a question through the mask she was wearing and then became frustrated when the woman could not answer her question and said "no" loudly and shook her head. Most places that have no chip manicures have nail swatches so you can see the color outside of just the poorly matched bottle. I have been getting my nails done here for years and after today, i am happy to say I will not be returning. As a student, im always looking for good deals. Unfortunately, each time i go to avenue nail spa, i am more and more disappointed with the service. The manager and most of the nail technicians are rude. Additionally, the quality of manicures and pedicures are average. The pedicures are rushed through and at this quality level, i would honestly recommend painting your toes yourself. If you must come here do not allow them to give you a longer leg/foot massage. Waste of money. In terms of regular manicures, I am less experienced. The few times i have gotten manicures here, i have left with my nails misshapen or a poor paint job. Today, i asked for a very light shade of pink. As most light pink polishes are, this one was a very thin formula and after 2 coats, I could still see the whites of my nails. When i asked for another coat, the nail technician groaned as if i was inconveniencing her. I also have received 2 acrylic manicures from avenue nail spa and these really turned me off of the establishment. They did not choose the correct sizes, they were extremely rough, and the nails looked awful. I would not under any circumstances recommend an acrylic manicure from this place. Finally, this is more of an inconvenience than an issue, but they charge extra for using a card instead of cash. Overall, nail technicians were rough, sloppy, and sometimes rude and I feel that the quality of service has decreased over the years. They file crooked, the polish doesn't last long, I have been nipped to the point of drawing blood, the staff is very rude, the management is horrible and it's not clean. I have really tried with this place, I have been here now 4 times but the last time I was here the lady was in such a hurry that she bit into me with the nail nippers. I have just received one of the worst nail service experience. The nail technician did not cut my cuticles , she was attempting to get away with the fastest /cheapest job she could possible do. This was so disgraceful . I asked her if she was going to cut my cuticle and she has the audacity to tell me that she had already did it . Mind you- I don't think she understood me because I was being really clear. I've been going here consistently for about a year and a half or so. I've always thought they've done a beautiful job and always try to accomodate me no matter how busy it is. The atmosphere is far superior from most of the other nail salons in the area. They are fast (without pushing you out the door) and I also think the prices are comparable to what you'd be paying at some other nail place that the atmosphere isn't even close to as nice as it is here. The problem with Avenue Nail Spa is that it is completely inconsistent. You may get an awesome pedicure one day and a terrible rush job the next. The price is right, but I'd rather pay an extra ten bucks around the corner so I don't leave irritated. They are the only salon that I know of in the area that offers a razor if you wish for removing callouses, so that's good if you like that. And they have nice massage chairs and smart interior design. They have a nice selection of OPI and Essie polishes, but on more than one occassion they tried to suggest another color because the one I picked was either too light or too dark or had too many sparkles. Umm, thank you, but I'll paint my nails whichever color I choose. Also, with the turnover that they do (particularly on the weekends), I find it hard to believe they have the time to fully sanitize their tools. Fast forward to the past 2 visits I've had, after a day or 2 I am utterly disgusted and upset with their quality of work. They do not pay attention to the details surrounding the toe during a pedicure nor did they shape my nails square & evenly as I requested. Nor did she do a thorough job of scrubbing my feet as I stand on my feet for over 12 hours a day. During my fill-in I asked if something could be done about the dead skin around my nails, the tech servicing me told me no,only for manicures. Cons: Totally inconsistent depending on how busy the place is. I like to feel pampered and they've often forgotten the hot stone massage or even applying lotion to my feet after a drying footbath. I opted for the $12 upgrade leg massage, and while nice, I'm not convinced it was worth it. I will probably skip it next time. They definitely are a well-oiled machine: the whole thing (with the extra 15 minutes) took about a little over a half hour. The atmosphere was nice, the technician was pleasant. I came in today to get a color change on my toes and a fill-in on my hands (which I discover they didn't have the same color I wanted on my hands) so I got white on my toes and nude no chip on my hands. After my toes were polished then I sat to get my fill-in on my hands by a male who had a little attitude by the way he was grabbing my hands and forcing them by the fan and so on. Let's forward to the point where he was getting started to file my nails. I begin to tell him I want my nails rounded and showed him a picture which he gave me a side eye look like he was OVER IT. I ignored his attitude and let him continue to do my nails. Once he was done I notice he filed my nails a little to narrow which showed my real nail on the side of the acrylic so I advised him what he did and which he doesn't understand English, he asked his employee to help him understand so I explained to him what had happen and he translated to the man. Went on a Sunday. It was a complete "cattle call." How fast can we get people in, done, paid and out. Before I was done with my manicure even, the manager was asking rudely, "How you pay? You pay for wife and you? You pay separate?" It was absolutely the fastest manicure and pedicure I have ever had. I had to stop the person twice to go back and do a more thorough job. They cut my wife's toe during her pedicure and drew blood. No apology from management or pedicure person. Once my wife tipped the person, she gave her no further assistance drying her toe nail polish. In fact, completely ignored her. On a cold Chicago winter Sunday, because of this, my wife felt compelled to wear her salon sandals to the car to protect the polish. Personally, I would not have paid for the pedicure or tipped, if they had cut me but my wife is nicer than I am. My wife had been there before and thought it worth going back, until today. This was my first time. If I do go back, it will not be on a Sunday. I wish I could give them NO STARS! This place was horrible! Customer service was horrible, it's obvious they didn't want my money. I made an appointment and everything hours before. Now I didn't expect to come right in to a seat. However I didn't expect to come in and sit for thirty minutes while they took all the walkins which were non-African American customers. Then when all of the seats were filled, the manager walked over to me and said, "Give us a few minutes." What is a few minutes after a half hour and you've told everyone to pick a color and pointed them to a chair, but me. It's obvious what this was!
