I've had many different massage therapists and facial aestheticians over the years but two things remains the same, the excellence of the staff and the amazing quality of each experience. I go to AVI Day Spay to find my center, relax my mind, and rejuvenate my body. Every single time I go I am impressed with the cleanliness and ambiance, friendliness of the staff, and the skill of the massage therapists and aestheticians. As a disclaimer, I've gotten many massages before this, and from many different people/spas. This was the worst... I got a Groupon for a 50min massage, Swedish or Deep Tissue. Called up, made an appointment for the weekend on a Thursday which was pretty nice. Good start... When I walked in there were 3-4 other people there. Somewhat small waiting area but it was comfortable. No one exactly showed me where to sit, nor offered me a glass of water (a paying customer got one..?). Ok, it's a small spa, I'm here for the massage anyways... I arrived at 2:10 for a 2:30 massage. Typical practice, especially when I'm new to the place. I sign in, fill out the paperwork, and wait as others go off to their treatments and others leave. At about 2:25, the hassle begins. The owner (or family member) asks me for my Groupon number again (I've never been hassled before a massage for this) and says that she can't find it. Oook...I have the email, I have the Groupon App, all say I've bought it. Another 10min goes by and she swears that it's been used. That's fine, except she had the list of every Groupon sold with people's names crossed out. It's obvious that either they're doing something wrong or jerking me around at this point. By 2:40, I was still sitting there. I asked if they wanted me to call Groupon Monday and reschedule (I was totally okay with it). At that point they said "it's ok, we'll take all of your information and check with Groupon". Ok......... At 2:45 I'm finally taken back to the treatment room. Nice room, shower in it, although it was a bit chilly and the blankets were thin. The therapist talked to me beforehand and I stressed I wanted a lot of attention/deep tissue on my upper back. By the time the massage starts, it's 2:53 (I looked for this exact purpose). Ok fine, I'll get to 3:43 with the 50min.... The massage begins and it was nothing to write home about. The woman just rubbed it seemed like and spent little attention on my back, didn't use any pressure (I asked, twice). She kept doing pressure points, lightly, and would hold them for 2-3min, wasting time. But, any massage is better than none and it was a Groupon, so I just went with it after the second time of asking her to press harder. Next thing I know, she's rubbing my hair around and then says she's done. It's 3:25. Um..What?!?! A 30min massage? I asked her if we were done, and she said yes. I asked her about the 50min part, she said that because we got started late, and there was a back-to-back appt, she had to end it. When I walked out to the front desk, all they could say was "oh we suddenly found the number". I tried to talk to the front desk about the time, no avail. All I got was "tip?". No, I'm not leaving a tip to someone who didn't listen to me and wouldn't try to extend my massage to what I paid for. The front desk can pay her extra if they really want. Not my job to provide for their services if they're bad. All in all, I asked Groupon for a refund and they happily gave it to me. Now I Yelp! before Groupon-ing, although this hasn't stopped me from buying others (the Serenity one was EXCELLENT) Two stars because of the ease of appt making and treatment rooms. I decided to try AVI Day Spa because of a Groupon offer for a micro-dermabrasion facial. I booked the appointment soon after the purchase and they were very accommodating on times and days. The scheduler/receptionist is very friendly and pleasant. I booked two appointments, one for my daughter and one for myself. My daughter went first and they were thorough about her skin type and did not push any products or unnecessary treatments on her. In fact, they said she had baby skin and didn't need much. I appreciated that as many spas will try to over sell their services. My daughter enjoyed her treatment. The next day I had high expectations and I was slightly disappointed. The micro-dermabrasion was not as I have had previously, as it felt like a vacuuming instead of a deep cleansing. The gal tried hard and showed me some of the results, but I have experienced much better. I think it was more about inexperience on her part and too much experience on my part to know what is right. The facial part was fine and she was very pleasant. I was hoping for a much more positive experience as I am on the hunt for a great facial in Northern Virginia, but this fell short. Since it was a Groupon, and discounted, I am glad I didn't pay full price. It is also a "school" and doesn't feel like a luxurious spa at all. I think their website is a little misleading, and I would ask for a trained person and not a person in training. *As an aside, I was interested in one of their product lines and I asked for a sample (skin test) and I was told "as a policy we don't give samples." I went here thanks to a Groupon for an hour-long Signature Massage. I had no problem making an appointment and they even allowed me to extend the validity of my Groupon by three days. The receptionist was kind and was anticipating my arrival. The restroom was clean and well-stocked. I didn't have to wait more than 1 minute to see Kwan, my masseuse. She was friendly and introduced herself and led me to the massage room. Kwan asked me what area I wanted her to focus on, and even though I told her upper body, she didn't neglect my legs or feet...ahhhhhh. Pressure was good, massage bed was heated and clean, music was relaxing, lighting was nice. Kwan didn't make small talk, just allowed me to relax and enjoy the massage. The room was nice, as I mentioned, but only gets downgraded because there was some audible door-slamming presumably by other Spa employees and for the last portion of my massage, I could hear high-pitched machinery, like that of a laser hair removal or something. It didn't ruin the experience, but I certainly wish the sound-proofing in the massage room had a been more present. Side note - I came here with VERY low expectations based on the previous reviews, but even so, I walked away happy and relaxed. I bought a Groupon for the signature massage. The massage I received from Andrea was definitely 5 stars, but the whole experience of the place made it unlikely that I will go back. The reception staff were difficult to schedule with over the phone. The entire spa seemed antiquated and in need of a serious upgrade. From the dimly lit selection of spa products that I have never heard of before in the display case to the old shabby bathroom with no toilet paper, the place left me feeling a little dirty. The atmosphere did not create a relaxing environment at all, so although the massage was enjoyable I will not be going back. read more

I got a groupon deal for a couples massage for my boyfriend and I and also for my parents for Xmas. When I called to set up an appointment for my parents, they said Groupon had made a mistake and they were not set up for couples massages but to just call ahead and make sure their were 2 masseuses available and they would be done in 2 separate rooms. When my boyfriend called to make an appointment for us, the lady told him they couldn't help us and to get a refund from Groupon. I'm not sure why they gave us 2 different responses but this customer service is TERRIBLE and we will be looking elsewhere for massages next time. read more

I'm frustrated before I even step foot into this place!!! Since I haven't managed to get an appointment yet I cannot comment on service yet! I bought a Groupon for a massage. It stated a signature massage which isn't listed on their website. I was told I cannot get a deep tissue and this is a regular massage when I first called. I was also told Monday thru Friday the last appointment is 4pm for a massage and I work full time! I had hoped to use this before it expires Jan 17 but I'm told now they are booked! I may get a cancellation! Their website shows they are open Sunday and I'm now told they are not!! I think you need to update your website with all these details to be honest to the client before they buy a Groupon! I was told they cannot put the details of the 4pm last massage time on the Groupon site! If I ever get the massage I will update this regarding my experience! Update Jan 7th: I am changing to three stars. The owner said she would get me in the day I called back but couldn't any other time. She said she would ask someone to stay late. She stated 530pm. I called to confirm that they had found someone for sure at 415 and was told my appointment was for 5pm and they closed at 6pm! Say what?! So I closed down my computer at work and ran out the door....drove like a maniac and got there in time - only to wait 30 minutes as they were running late! Really?!!!!! The massage was ok. Finally had success in getting an appointment 2 months in advance only to be called 2 days before to let me know that they are not open at that time. Seriously! I wish I could rate this place "zero stars." I purchased a groupon for $400.00 for 4 large area laser sessions. When I called I specified I wanted laser hair removal from my belly to my mid thigh. They said this qualified as a large area. When I arrived the owner "Naheed" was there and she wouldn't leave me and the technician alone. She told me that my groupon only covered me for ONE session for the specified area. I told her that isn't what the advertisement said and that I had already confirmed my sessions and area before I arrived. She began to prattle on about cost and expense of the machines and how much she has to pay her technicians etc. My technician (who shall remain nameless because she tried to work a deal for me but wasn't able to in the long run - because she quit due to Naheed's false advertising.) Naheed had me undress and looked over my body while the technician was there. I should have told her I didn't want more than one person in the room. I think I was dumfounded. I was partially naked when Naheed left the door partially open saying that she wanted to "air" out the room from whatever fumes the machines put out. My technician finally closed the door. The actual laser work by my technician turned out great. I have much less hair. It was painful but worth it. Naheed KEPT COMING BACK IN!!! She said I could endure a higher laser intensity and turned it up. Then she checked out my body and made me stand up to look at my backside. She said their laser was very effective and she pulled down her pants and put my hand on her pubic bone so I could feel how smooth she is. She kept coming back in to check out my body. I am CERTAIN it was because she wanted to make sure my technician wasn't covering more than the area I had specified. She followed me to check out to make sure I redeemed my entire groupon. This is a very manipulative person. Her technicians apologize for her and can't stand her. My experience was completely uncomfortable, unprofessional and unsettling. My first and only visit. Had a 10:00 appointment, had to wait 45 minutes after that. I counted 4 large bugs on the floor and walls while waiting. Staff very rude, acted like they were doing me a favor. Overpriced for what you get, maybe it's the neighborhood but I felt they were ripping me off. As in a previous Yelp review, I too found the owner to be filthy, unethical and someone who should not be in business. Do yourself a favor and avoid this scum ridden hole in the wall. read more

I got a 60 min massage and 40 min mini facial on Groupon and I'm so glad I did. The massage was EXCELLENT! The beds were warmed, rooms were quiet with peaceful music, pressure was perfect and I felt like jelly after. I would come back here in a heartbeat. I've had massages at 5 star hotels that weren't this good. Ya, the place is a little on the older side, but the treatment was 5 stars, I was seen right away and I walked out of there ready to schedule another there. As for the facial, it was good. I have only had one before so I can't really compare but I'd say very good. I'd get another too. read more

I had a groupon for 60 minute massage and this was my second time at AVI spa. Wow what a terrible experience. Massage itself was OK, nothing bad but nothing to write home about. I wish the therapist was more thorough. The bed was rickety and shaky so every time the therapist applied pressure, the bed moved with it. I could hear spa personnel talking outside which was extremely distracting. When I arrived, the lobby was empty. No receptionist. She showed up 5 minutes later. As if that's how it should be. After my massage, I went outside to tip the therapist. Again, no one in the lobby. I found therapist in the back room along with the receptionist and another woman. No acknowledgment whatsoever from either of them. No "how was everything". Complete disregard for the customer. I was appalled and couldn't wait to get out of there. read more

My friend and I decided to go out for some facials on my last night in town. It was short notice, so I had to call at least 10 different spas in the NOVA area the day before in order to try to make an appointment. It was extremely difficult, but thank goodness for AVI Day Spa. They made the appointment for two facials at the same time with no difficulty. Upon arrival, the atmosphere appeared a little dated. The reception area seemed slightly cramped, but the friendly greeting from staff and others made up for any shortcomings with decor. We originally were going to get "mini-facials," but a very nice receptionist convinced us to do 60 minute, full facials instead. At first I thought she was just trying to get us to pay more, but that was not the case. She gave us the Groupon discount that the spa offered, even though we hadn't mentioned the discount. We ended up paying virtually the price of a mini-facial for a full 60 minute facial (which has a normal price tag of $110...we ended up paying far less than that), complete with massages and extractions. Whatever the receptionist's motivation (I think she was just trying to be nice and didn't want us to pay full price), we came out with a steal in my book. As far as the actual facials, they were extremely relaxing. We were offered glasses of water in the lounge area. My esthetician, a nice woman named Maria, gave a very relaxing massage, took the time to examine the condition of my skin, and performed my extractions easily, making sure I felt comfortable the whole time. Overall, my friend and I enjoyed an extremely pleasant experience and would be happy to return to AVI in the future for facial treatments. read more

This is long overdue and my first experience writing a review for Yelp. I have been a client of AVI for about 17 years. Whenever I go there, I am met with professionalism and kindness. I had to go a bit later and Naheed stayed to finish my service without charging me anything extra. She has worked me in even when it meant she had to face a lot of extra traffic. When my mom passed away she was especially gentle and sweet to me. She even lent me a CD of music that was particularly soothing during my treatment on that occasion. She treats her staff like family and they are loyal. I will always go to AVI. They have always gone out of their way for their customers. Thank you! read more

I found this Spa very clean and the receptionist was very friendly and the therapist was fantastic. I think this AVI Spa was excellent considering the service and price. I obtained a facial and massage from this location after purchasing a groupon. The massage was very unpleasant. The massage table was unheated, yet the room was very cold thereby making the massage uncomfortable. The room was cluttered, smelled of chemicals and was not soothing. The facial was ok, but painful as the woman smashed my nose in painfully while she removed black heads. Overall a very unpleasant experience that taught me that you get what you pay for. . . no more groupon massages for me. read more

This is a no frills place. I had no issues making an appointment like some other reviewers. The establishment itself can use some updating. It seems cramped, has old furniture, fake plastic flowers, and could use a good cleaning. If you are expecting a spa where you get to change into a robe, get offered a drink, and relax a bit before your massage, it's not going to happen here. The massage itself was relaxing. My masseuse's name was Hangemeh and she was very nice, which is why I'm giving this place three stars. If you are coming for a massage here, ask for her! read more

It was meh, I went for a facial that I got on Groupon, the details included deep pore extractions, which I made clear was main purpose for the facial. It was comfortable and my skin was glowing afterwards but it's only because the esthetician spent 90 percent of the time rubbing moisturizer on my face while getting a couple blackheads out and leaving me with a half ass facial. DO NOT GO HERE!!! My husband bought me a Groupon for an hour massage from this place and I gave it a try. Boy, it was a big dissappointment! I told the masseuse I like deep tissue massage and asked her to concentrate on my shoulders and lower back. 10 minutes into the session, she did the total opposite; light massage and barely touched my shoulders or my back. Just for my curiosity, I asked her how long she's been in the business and she said "I'm sorry I just got out of school". I told her I have to go. I got dressed and went to the front desk. I told the receptionist what happened so she asked me to come back and she will book me with a more experienced masseuse or another service such as facial. I left that place feeling upset because they just wasted my time. A few months passed, I decided to go back and try their facial treatment before the Groupon expires. Yet, another dissappointment. Clearly this lady had no experience either. No pressure point facial massage, just a lot of putting some cream on my face and taking it off repeatedly. She left me alone in the room twice, once for 5 minutes and another for about 15 minutes. I was about to get dressed and leave the place once again. I've never experienced anything as bad as this. I gave them a second time to prove themselves but they're just a bunch of inexperienced staff. You can't charge people for your service when you don't know what you're doing. My advice to them is to hire knowlegable, English speaking staff so they can help clients with body aches or skin care. read more

I have been going to AVI for microdermabrasion treatments a number of years, always with Groupons. I've also tried other places in the area. I've had many aestheticians at AVI and other places. Each seems to have their own style and set of steps in the process. The most recent I had at AVI was the best I've ever had! Brenda was just awesome. She told me what she was doing at each turn and what she was putting on my face. When it was done, I could SEE and FEEL the results for days afterwards. The worst part was that it was her last day, as she had just graduated from the school and was getting a "real" job at Massage Envy in DC! If I didn't live so far, I'd go to her exclusively. I called to reschedule an appointment and had the unfortunate experience of speaking to the manager, Alicia. This woman was rude, unprofessional and curt from the get go and she was not particularly happy about the cancellation of my appointment due to illness. Rather than try to accommodate me as a first time customer, she proceeded to discuss all of the penalties associated with their cancellation policy and even had the nerve to tell me that I may lose my privilege of using my PREPAID Groupon for the Salon. I felt this was an attempt to intimidate and coerce me into keeping my appointment that I could simply not keep. If I hadn't prepaid for the services, i would NEVER visit this salon based solely on my first impression with Alicia. She could use a refresher course in good customer service. Lastly, I have purchased and used many Groupons for spa services in the past and have not encountered this type of negative attitude from anybody, even when I've had to reschedule an appointment. I had come to AVI a few years ago and had a great experience with Shalah. Recently I returned to AVI for some electrolysis treatments but Shalah no longer works there and Naheed, the owner, became my esthetician. From our first appointment, she was pushy and began asking me to write her a five star review on Yelp - she was more concerned about convincing me to rate her highly than the actual treatment she was performing. She kept going on and on about how evil competitors were trying to sabotage her and how so many negative reviews were ruining her business. I told her if she gave me five star service I would give her a five star rating. Evening while knowing that I was planning on evaluating her, she still gave me terrible service, intact the worst I've ever had. I am not sure whether Naheed is a good esthetician, I only lasted three appointments with her. Of the three she cancelled on me every single time, once within an hour of the appointment and upon cancelation the receptionist couldn't even reschedule me. Naheed was never in when I would call back later to make a different appointment and scheduling became so tricky that the receptionist eventually just left a note for Naheed to call me so we could communicate directly. I thought this would be the end of our problems because I was able to get a hold of her and make an appointment for that same day. It was a real squeeze into my schedule but I jumped on the opportunity. I made sure I was clear that the appointment would have to take place immediately at the scheduled time because I was in a rush. She promised she would begin on time (my previous appointments she had always run about 20 minutes late). I showed up a few minutes early and prepaid the appointment. The receptionist was new and overcharged me for the appointment. I explained the error to her and she said she would have to confirm with Naheed what the correct price of the treatment was so she went to the back room the get her and tell her I had arrived, but Naheed was talking on her cell phone (I had a view of the back room and I could hear through the door she was on a personal call). My appointment time came and went and then so did another 15 minutes. Naheed was still on her call, the receptionist still had my card because she didn't know how much to charge me, and at this point I was going to be very late for work and had to leave. I asked for a refund of my money and told the receptionist I had to go. She ran back to get Naheed and told her again I had been waiting and now wanted to leave. Naheed ended her call and came out and reprimanded the receptionist in front of me for not having alerted her of my arrival. I couldn't believe how rude she was and right in front of a customer. Not only had the receptionist informed her of my arrival but Naheed had made the appointment directly with me only hours before and I wasn't even in the scheduling book. Anyways, I never went back. It wasn't really the lateness or the scheduling issues that turned me off, but rather her attitude, her pushiness and the fact that I felt like I had to time my appointments in order for her to give me the full 15 minutes I was paying for. read more

The technician I saw was very sweet, but the spa's policies seem focused on minimizing cost at the expense of service. The products on display looked very old and I would not be surprised if expired. The owner was very non specific about ingredients in the scrub they used for my body wrap even though I asked for clarification which did not sit well with me. I was in my body wrap for only 15 minutes when other places will keep you in a wrap for 3 times as long and wrap you in a more thorough way. When I asked the technician if I could remain In the wrap for longer, she insisted she could not allow more time because that was the spa's policy. I shared my wrap time concerns with the owner On the way out and she reiterated their policy but said they would have let me stay in the wrap longer if I asked. I did but got turned down! Also, I barely got warm in the wrap which defeats the purpose. I spent an equal amount of time just sitting in the waiting room waiting for the owner to check me in which probably ate into my appointment time because it seemed like they were trying to get me out of that room by a certain time.
