Very disappointing experience with Avianca. The connections were ridiculously long--one of mine was almost eight hours, something I unfortunately didn't notice when booking, but it made an already exhausting trip even worse. The seats did not recline and were so cramped that, even though I'm only 5'3", my knees were pressed against the seat in front of me the entire flight. The passenger next to me had to sit sideways for most of the trip because there simply wasn't enough legroom. On a flight lasting over six hours, no food was provided, and I was only offered a single cup of water. To make matters worse, the fee for an overweight bag was only about $20 less than the cost of checking an entirely new bag, which is a ridiculous pricing policy. Overall, the lack of comfort, poor service, and excessive fees made for a terrible travel experience. I will never choose Avianca again and would not recommend it based on this experience. read more

My first and last experience flying with Avianca Airlines was a complete disaster. I flew internationally from Dulles International Airport to Colombia, and for a 5 1/2-hour flight, the only service provided was basic beverages and a cheese and meat sandwich that tasted like it had been sitting for days. There were no entertainment screens on the plane, which made the flight even more uncomfortable. Upon arriving in Bogotá, immigration lines were so long that it took nearly 3 hours to get through, causing hundreds of passengers including myself to miss connecting flights. Customer service was extremely disappointing. They placed many of us in a hotel overnight and issued standby tickets for the next day. Unfortunately, the return trip was just as bad. My flights were delayed without explanation and there was no bad weather involved. I missed my connection again, had to stay another night in Bogotá, pay out of pocket for hotel transportation, and was once again given a standby ticket. I will never fly internationally with Avianca again. For local travel, maybe. But for international flights, I strongly recommend choosing another airline unless you're prepared for delays, cancellations, and major headaches. read more

Heads up to fellow travelers using Avianca at Dulles (IAD) -- had quite an experience today at the check-in counter. The agent tried to charge me for my carry-on bag, which is explicitly included in my fare. When I politely declined, she became visibly irate and difficult. What made it worse? She muttered under her breath "What? This man?" -- completely unprofessional and, frankly, disrespectful. A manager had to be called over, who confirmed I was 100% correct and did not have to pay anything. Know your rights before you fly! Avianca's own boarding pass clearly shows carry-on is included. I had one of the worst travel experiences with Avianca Airlines. Due to what appears to be their internal reservation error, my flight details were incorrect. I had previously called to confirm my departure time and was reassured everything was correct. Despite that, I later received a call from the airport saying my flight was about to depart -- at a time that did not match what I had been told. Because of this mistake, I was marked as a "no-show," and they automatically canceled my return flight. I was then forced to purchase two brand-new round-trip tickets, one for me and one for my daughter even though the issue stemmed from misinformation provided by their own representative. The most frustrating part? On our return trip, when I checked in, the system had us under the "automatically canceled" reservation -- the same one they told me I could not use. When I explained that I had already been forced to buy new tickets because of their error, the representative simply said it wasn't their fault and that if I wanted to board the earlier flight (which was five hours before the one they claimed was canceled), I would have to purchase yet another ticket. This experience felt extremely unfair and unprofessional. Instead of taking responsibility for their mistake, they repeatedly pushed the financial burden onto us. It honestly felt like policies were being used to extract more money rather than to resolve the issue. Travelers should be very cautious when booking with Avianca. Flew Avianca for the first time on a recent trip from the US to Columbia. I will never fly this crappy airline again! The plane seats were the tightest I've ever seen in my life. Laughably tiny. My family spent the first 15 minutes on the plane literally laughing in disbelief at how cramped we all were. Literally nowhere to put your legs. I could smell the hair of the person sitting in front of me. On the 5 1/2 hour flight, they didn't bring us any food or water. That's right, not even water! Now that I'm back home, I'm being inundated with spam from them. I must have received 50 emails from this company since booking the tickets. The absolute worst. read more

Any reasonable company would offer compensation for a significant delay like this, but Avianca claimed this was not eligible as the reason for the delay was "weather". After a thorough review - I literally searched every other flight leaving Bogota the day of our flight (as our flight was coming from BOG to JFK), and not a single one was delayed due to weather. So Avianca lied to us to deny compensation. After much arguing, they agreed to provide a hotel voucher so we could get some rest, which was needed as Avianca's planes are incredibly uncomfortable, and that we'd just need to speak with a supervisor in Bogota as soon as we got off the plane. Needless to say - there was no supervisor there, and every employee acted confused, explained they couldn't speak English, and told us to talk to someone else. We ended up only arriving 26 minutes late to Bogota, so we got to our gate with an hour to spare before the departure time where the employees told us there was no possibility we could get on the plane and summarily dismissed us. The employees (of which I spoke to many) have zero customer service skills - they lie, deflect, and ignore and get defensive when asked direct questions. One woman (Edna Bocanegra) actually admitted that they are all liars and then when we asked for her name, attempted to hide her name tag and run away and was incredibly rude with us. She acted like she was a street thug and wanted to fight and gave us nasty looks. Avianca gave us the metaphorical middle finger even as we tried to be reasonable and speak with them. They lied to us, denied us boarding a plane we arrived to with a reasonable amount of time to board, and gave us half of a Subway sandwich as compensation for a 10 + hour delay. read more

Worst airline I've ever flown. They will change your itinerary constantly before your flight to a horrible schedule (my 6 hour flight from DC to Vancun via Miami changed yo DC to El Salvador to Cancun and took 10 hours). Customer service is filled with useless puppets that give you false information. DO NOT FLY THIS HORRIBLE AIRLINE. read more

For all those who deign to flight this company, avoid at all costs. Below is my complaint email to Avianca after ALL flights (multiple planes, only on this carrier, were cancelled from Lima Airport. Other carriers flew out last night, despite Avianca Claiming it was a single aircraft issue, then claiming it was an airport wide issue). Dear Avianca: I am a US lawyer writing to express my deep disappointment and frustration regarding the recent cancellation of my flight, Flight Number: AV74/AV210 scheduled on June 3, from Lima, Peru to New York, JFK. The flight was inexplicably cancelled due to what the representative claimed were "external factors", causing significant inconvenience and unexpected costs to my travel plans. The story we got began: 1) there was a plane malfunction affecting our aircraft; followed by 2) there was an external factor at the airport itself affecting our flight. Whatever the reason, the shifting stories by your employees indicate to me a problematic lie to customers to avoid compensating them for the inconvenience. As a loyal customer, I had made all necessary arrangements and incurred various expenses in anticipation of this trip. The abrupt cancellation not only resulted in financial losses but also caused me considerable stress and inconvenience. I understand that unforeseen circumstances can arise, but it is the airline's responsibility to adequately compensate passengers for such disruptions. I kindly request compensation for the following: 1. **Full Refund of the Ticket Cost**: The amount paid for the cancelled flight. 2. **Reimbursement of Additional Expenses**: Costs incurred for accommodation, meals, and transportation due to the cancellation. This airline is of the best I have ever flown with…read more Upon boarding the plane we were provided provided escort to our seats in first class, which were actually more like apartments. The first class seats literally have everything you could possibly need for pajamas, toiletries, snacks and entertainment. If there is anything you may need just push the call button or ask and they will do whatever they can to help. Everyone onboard is exceptional in everything they do, especially ensuring you are satisfied and have everything you require. The entertainment offered on board is quite a variety and they keep up to date on tv shows and movies. They also provide flight information in real time and other entertainment options, including music. They do have headphones available as well. The food is order on demand, so instead of setting your dinner order, breakfast order and times, they will share with you the menu's in advance, place your order when you are ready. The dink menu for first class is phenomenal, the vintage scotch and port are two of my favorites. I love to end the evening with a 1964 port. Take your drink to the bar I order to stretch your legs if you like, whatever you are drinking will follow you if you advise staff, business class does not have the same drink menu. The food is exceptionally well prepared and so is the place setting. You will also be asked to schedule your morning shower, I noticed many people not wanting to shower but I have to say there is nothing better at the end of a long flight and no worries of getting cold feet as the bathroom floors are heated for your comfort. You will have 30 minutes to shower total and 5 minutes of water use so watch the timer and turn off in between lathering and rinsing. Once you are ready for bed just ask to have the bed made up and you will be ready to sleep, not everyone uses the pajamas supplied but I find them very comfortable. If your looking for a five star airline, you have it with Emirates! Cheers!!

Flew Business Class on Austrian Airlines from Washington DC (IAD) to Vienna (VIE) and then on to…read moreAthens (ATH), booked with miles through Star Alliance with United Airlines. The long haul business flight was surprisingly bad. On the plus side, the food was delicious and service was friendly. I enjoyed trying a range of Austrian wines, and they were kind enough to give me a second entree. But the hard product - the seating - was lacking. I slept worse than I'd have slept in economy - the seat was hard and uncomfortable, and the temperature in the cabin was swelteringly high. The short haul Schengen flight from Vienna to Athens was pretty standard, and is often the case with intra-EU flights, the "business class" was just economy seats at the front of the plane with the middle seats blocked - no extra legroom or roomier seating. Again, the food was delicious, I was surprised at the quality (and quantity) of the meal on such a short flight. I'd definitely avoid Austrian on a transcontinenal flight in the future. In fact, my return flight was originalluy on Austrian, but I changed to United. Say what you will about UA, but the international Polaris Business class is still one of the best transcon options until you get into First Class territory.

With the agents there, why not announce or put a sign that would let passengers be aware of needing new printed tickets flying into US of Canada instead of waiting to tell everyone and have to go through another line elsewhere. It's a good thing we had enough time of layover. So we go to their customer service and get the tickets, come back in line and AGAIN we're told wait somewhere else until another 30mins to get in line for boarding. So we couldn't even sit down by the gate cause they had it blocked off and only let a few in. Wait what??!! So we board and no air vents for individual air flow. I thought I was going to passed out from being hot. As for the meal? You get what they have! No choice!!! It was more Vegetarian than anything. So if you fly with them or connect with them through United, now you know.
