I really wanted to love this airline but after my experience I would never fly with them again. I purchased multiple flights for my trip which started from Newark and was supposed to return to Newark. My departure flights went smoothly with any negative incidents. However, a few days before my return flights were scheduled I get a email from the airline apologizing for changing my return flight which would now end at Washington Dulles airport instead Newark airport as I booked. I immediately sent a email then tried their social media site but they had many. The airline didn't respond to my email until my day of departure while I was already at the airport. They offered alternative flights to get to Newark but they were in 2 days and the email mentioned no accommodations. I flew the first return flight which was to Addis Ababa which is their home airport. I spoke to one of their customer service representatives and she claimed that she could not help me because I booked through booking.com and they had changed my flights. But also in her explanation she tells me that they had no flights going to Newark at all. All of statements were contradicting and made no sense to me so I eventually I asked for a supervisor. Once the supervisor showed he agreed with me and stated "we have to get you to Newark because that was your original booking" then proceeded to instruct the staff on changing my flights. While waiting I met other people in line with the same issue however, they had excepted the representatives initial statement and never asked for a supervisor. When traveling you want to fly with airlines you can trust. After my experience with Ethiopian airlines I wouldn't feel comfortable traveling with them again because I would not want a repeat experience. read more

We had a ~13 hour flight from the US to Ethiopia with a very brief layover at ADD before boarding our last flight to CPT (6.5 hours). It was fairly standard. The movie/TV show selection was adequate. I didn't love the food selection for the vegetarian entrees, but airplane food is never great. We had a very short layover in Ethiopia, arriving at the Addis Ababa Bole International Airport at 7:15 AM and departing at 8:20 AM. I was worried about this being a tight connection, but since we had a connecting flight with Ethiopian Airlines, there were no security checks to get through. Boarding was inexplicably delayed, but finally we were on our way to Cape Town. At some point, the flight attendants came by with sandwiches, and I snagged a couple for us; sadly, we realized they had meat, so we just set them aside. About 2 hours outside of Cape Town, they served lunch. Something had happened with our vegetarian meals and I think they gave them to a seafood passenger, so we were told we would get a business class veg meal, but it appears they were able to scrounge up a standard veg meal. I was disappointed and wish they hadn't even mentioned the possibility of a higher quality meal lol. read more

I did not die on Ethiopian Airlines. I went to the bathroom on a flight as the flight attendants were chillingly pouring juice drinks in the kitchen. The pilots meanwhile had planned their landing without announcing that to the cabin crew. I tried to return to my seat, but it was occupied by a flight attendant, on a steep descent. I landed standing in the aisle. Love the beautiful Ethiopian people, but not death by airline. read more

In response to the review dated 6/14/19. Do not call the 844 number listed. It is a scam. We dialed it and were connected to an operator with a southeast Asian accent who soon asked us to purchase a $100.00 debit card at a Walgreens. At that point we hung up. Obviously, it is not affiliated with Ethiopian Airlines. The only good part was they answered promptly which is totally not the case with Ethiopian Airlines. They are about impossible to call to change a flight. We had to drive to the airport in order to get to a ticket agent. This proves to us that they're not ready for prime time, not even close to USA legacy carriers. read more

The Ethiopian Airlines on Duke St & South Washington St in Old Town, Alexandria, VA had been moved to 3133 Mt Vernon Ave, Alexandria, VA 22303. Their phone number is +1-703-682-0570. As always, they have helpful associates top to bottom which is typically what Ethiopian is know for. The old office was flat but this has multiple floors so be ready to climb stairs. I haven't seen an elevator. Shall work on making the office more accessible to people with disabilities since it has stairs. Their service is more of bookings and ticketing besides administrative. They recommend to use their Ethiopian Airlines app or their website to save 10% & 5% respectively in your fare. Their Ethiopian Airlines Cargo service is handled by different agents. read more

They are open from 10-8pm Monday through Friday Saturdays are 10-5pm They are closed on Sunday. The ladies were helpful and polite. This is not a review of the airline but the office location. There is street parking near by. I was able to get answers to my questions that I needed. It is a small office with 4 employees sitting behind desks. It is laid back. It appears that they are at the mercy of their computer system and if that has problems then they aren't going to be able to do much for you. I have not flown yet, but I assume cultural differences play a part in miscommunication and expectations. read more

Flew from IAD to ADD. My ticket said United Airlines but when I went to check in, I discovered that it was a code-share flight being operated by Ethiopian Airlines. Check in seemed truly disorganized and they are really strict on the 50-pound weight limit for bags. They even wanted to weigh my carry-on because the attendant said there was a weight restriction which I thought was ridiculous. Service on the plane was about average. Certainly not my go-to airline but it was a non-stop flight so there you have it read more

I fly to Africa often. Ethiopian Airlines makes my life so easy. I would recommend that you use the Alexandria, VA office if possible. They are very efficient (especially Angela) and know what they are doing. Sometimes the other offices are not on top of things. Worth it to call the Alexandria office. Lillian read more

Flew from Blantyre Malawi to Washington, D.C. The BLZ to ADD leg was the worst! Service was dismal to say the least. The air was so dry my throat felt parched all the time. When I asked for water to drink I was kindly ignored. When I even pushed the attendant light for assistance the cabin attendants ignored me even when they passed by me. It was the worst experience ever, only slightly worse than SAA during the apartheid times for sure. read more

I flew from Tanzania to DC and it as been a MONTH and 2 weeks (!!!!!) ever since ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES lost my luggadge!!! This situation should be a priority to any professional airline but cleary Ethiopian do not care with their costumers at all! I filled the paper work TWICE and despite that and all my effords to try to give them all information nedded to find it, I am still waiting to be contacted and reimbursed!!!!! I flew from Dublin to Los Angeles on Monday January 4th with the flight number ET 504, the flight was delayed around an hour without letting us know about it. I am really disappointed because I paid a really expensive flight to get to my destination on time and do an important test on time. Due to that delay I couldn´t do that test and I had to pay a fee to do it later. Also my luggage was supposed to go direcly from Barcelona to Los Angeles, but it got lost in Dublin. But my luggage not only got lost, but also it was hard to get it at home. Ethiopian Airlines kept calling me every day saying I would get my luggage the same day, after 4 days I got a call saying that British airways have my luggage in the airport and they couldn't communicate with Ethiopian airlines, British Airways was calling me to let me know they had my luggage, but it was not until the next Monday that I got my luggage home (more than one week later), I called to Ethiopian airlines and they said British airways was right next door in the airport and it was really easy to send someone over, I don't understand why they couldn't do it earlier. Finally, I filled out three online complains and I never got any feedback or even confirmation to my email to know that it was going to be processed.After 20 days, calls and emails, They haven't still contacted me. I don't recomend this airline to anybody, I was not the only one affected on my flight. read more

So my experience. We fly from Dulles for about an hour, then pilot says we are turning back. Problem with landing gear not retracting. We sit on plane for about an hour then they tell us they will give us a $15 food voucher so we can get our food while we are waiting for them to fix the gear. 3 hours later we are sitting in the airport with no real update, then they announce in Amharic on the 'loudspeaker' (you had to be near the podium to hear anything) that they will give us hotel vouchers for nearby hotels. At this point, we non-amharic speakers are asking for translations from the folks who understand, and it is like playing 'Broken Telephone". We start following the folks who obviously have a connect at the airline because they always get whispered updates first. 2 hours later we finally all get hotel vouchers then we are told to go outside to go to our hotel. Another 2 hrs and we are battling for shuttles to go to our hotel. Some of the passengers pretty much pay one of the shuttle drivers for another hotel to take us to ours. We are extremely grateful and offer to reimburse them but they refuse. Airline said they would pay for our dinner and breakfast. They neglected to let us know how much we are allowed for dinner so we can't order from the ONLY restaurant that delivers for room service to our hotel (the hotel apparently doesn't have it's own restaurant). The hotel doesn't know what we are allocated, the airline is unreachable. We are now just more than really unhappy. Yelp reviews come to mind. We are told to be at the airport no later than 6am so we get up and go. We get there and the line of people from the day before is winding. The counter finally opens at 7 but they don't start dealing with us until 7:30. Some folks have been standing since 5:30. Some folks at the front of the line are allowing their buddies to cut to the front with over 14 bags of luggage (I counted....I had time).What was more irritating is that the folks at the counter would process them, knowing they had cut the line. Not appropriate at all. Folks get up in arms and people start telling those cutting in line that they are not going to allow it. It was getting heated (phones were coming out to record things). a guy at the counter stands up and tells us that if we are from the plane from the previous day we need to wait "...over there...." ***points to a spot way out to his left*** so they can process the people from today's flight. that was when they had to call security because people just started yelling out "No, we are not moving!". Eventually they processed us and the people from the current day, but it was not handled well at all. I think, judging from how tired the stewardesses look, they are overworked and the airline is expanding faster than it's customer service can accommodate. Definitely a problem. They used to be really good. I hope they get their act together soon. read more

Long Story Short: Five day vacation and two plus days without luggage. Why? Coz, despite my going up to the Ethiopian Airlines gate agent at Los Angeles to ensure my luggage was on board and despite the gate agent looking me in the eye and assuring me it was, the end result was discovering SHE LIED and that my luggage never even left Los Angeles while I was oceans away in Kampala. Arrived 92 hours after I first checked it in! Worse, took forever trying to figure out how to get HELP to resolve this missing luggage. When HELP was eventually uncovered, received a measly, paltry $75--shameful amount--for being stuck in a hotel room with a hotel robe and slippers completely going berserk for two plus days because of all the misinformation given to me and the inability of anyone to tell me where my luggage was. Finally, learned that it had never even ever left Lost Angeles and was still sitting there! So spent Day Three of my five-day vacation writing to Customer Service only to eventually find there is no real "customer" "service"....first, of all, immediately received one of those WE CARE ABOUT YOU auto-responses and WE WILL RESPOND PERSONALLY TO YOU in ten days or less. Bunkum. Balderdash. There was still no response almost a fortnight later. So wrote again. This time received an indifferent, nonchalant "sorry, our max is $75" no matter how arduous an experience we personally as an inefficient airline put you through. Feel totally cheated out of what should have been a stress-free vacation, most of which was spent tossing and turning about the missing luggage and stressing about the overall poor service provided by Ethiopian Airlines. I always use Ethiopian Airlines when possible. I travel primarily from Dulles, VA connecting through Addis Ababa to various African destinations 1-2 times a year, the most recent being November 2015. Ethiopian Airlines transnational flights are as good as it gets. I fly Economy class and I am satisfied. For all the dissatisfied customers, you cannot expect 5 star service paying for Economy class, heck pay for business class and try out Cloud Nine. You'll definitely get what you pay for. Luggage missteps are bound to happen, get used to it. Ethiopian Airlines is the best African airlines. You complain about customer service? Well, try flying any transnational flight on any US based airlines... in-flight service and entertainment sucks!!! Ethiopian Airlines offers a variety of movies including blockbuster African, American, European, and Asian movies in as varied languages. Thumbs UP Ethiopian. read more

Complete hectic, chaos at the check in counter of Dulles International Airport. My luggaege did…read morenot arrive at my final destination. I arrived Saturday afternoon and my luggage made it to the hotel Monday evening. Allow 3 hours to check in. Not a pleasant trip. I had 1 hour 45 minutes before my flight. The line moved so slow. Finally, after an hour, the lady at the counter checked me in and said run to your gate. Impossible to run because I still had to go through security and catch the shuttle train. I made it to the gate and I ran. After sitting on the plane for 35 minutes, they made an announcement that they were waiting for a mechanical part to start the engine, it was nothing serious, all very normal, and we would be departing within 15 minutes. After another 25 minutes, we departed. Honestly, all the captain had to say was they were doing pre flight checks and we would be leaving a little behind schedule. His announcement terrified us. Luckily, it was a smooth flight. Arrived sort behind schedule. Once we landed, they made the announcement to allow those with connecting flights to depart off the plane first so we could make the connection. In Brazil, they don't listen. The passengers did what they wanted to do and it was chaos getting off the plane. I had a connection and nobody would let me pass. There was yelling, pushing, along with the anxiety of trying to make the connecting flight. Made the connection. My luggage did not. 3 days later it arrived. What I don't like about Avianca, people did not seem very happy to have their job. Customer service was bare minimal or just satisfactory. I remember when boarding the flight, the stewardess' were so deep in chit chat with themselves, they were not really greeting or welcoming the passengers. Ughhh. They could improve in so many ways.

A long list of items broken on the plane. I was unfortunate to have a broken seat that didn't recline for more my long flight to Rome. The Dulles ground crew at check in changed my seat and said my original seat was broken. On the plane, a couple had the seats together so not sure how they fixed the seat on the old plane before take off. Flight crew does bare minimum and the quantity of the beverages they dispense is very small. They will not offer refills again. I would fly them again if the flight times were good and costs were low. Other routes might have the newer neo's then I would fly them with less hesitation.

Yes, they announce boarding rules (group lineups) but don't enforce it. All of a sudden it's mayhem with people rushing the gate to get to the plane. In a hurry to just wait. This airline is of the best I have ever flown with…read more Upon boarding the plane we were provided provided escort to our seats in first class, which were actually more like apartments. The first class seats literally have everything you could possibly need for pajamas, toiletries, snacks and entertainment. If there is anything you may need just push the call button or ask and they will do whatever they can to help. Everyone onboard is exceptional in everything they do, especially ensuring you are satisfied and have everything you require. The entertainment offered on board is quite a variety and they keep up to date on tv shows and movies. They also provide flight information in real time and other entertainment options, including music. They do have headphones available as well. The food is order on demand, so instead of setting your dinner order, breakfast order and times, they will share with you the menu's in advance, place your order when you are ready. The dink menu for first class is phenomenal, the vintage scotch and port are two of my favorites. I love to end the evening with a 1964 port. Take your drink to the bar I order to stretch your legs if you like, whatever you are drinking will follow you if you advise staff, business class does not have the same drink menu. The food is exceptionally well prepared and so is the place setting. You will also be asked to schedule your morning shower, I noticed many people not wanting to shower but I have to say there is nothing better at the end of a long flight and no worries of getting cold feet as the bathroom floors are heated for your comfort. You will have 30 minutes to shower total and 5 minutes of water use so watch the timer and turn off in between lathering and rinsing. Once you are ready for bed just ask to have the bed made up and you will be ready to sleep, not everyone uses the pajamas supplied but I find them very comfortable. If your looking for a five star airline, you have it with Emirates! Cheers!!

The long haul business flight was surprisingly bad. On the plus side, the food was delicious and service was friendly. I enjoyed trying a range of Austrian wines, and they were kind enough to give me a second entree. But the hard product - the seating - was lacking. I slept worse than I'd have slept in economy - the seat was hard and uncomfortable, and the temperature in the cabin was swelteringly high. The short haul Schengen flight from Vienna to Athens was pretty standard, and is often the case with intra-EU flights, the "business class" was just economy seats at the front of the plane with the middle seats blocked - no extra legroom or roomier seating. Again, the food was delicious, I was surprised at the quality (and quantity) of the meal on such a short flight. I'd definitely avoid Austrian on a transcontinenal flight in the future. In fact, my return flight was originalluy on Austrian, but I changed to United. Say what you will about UA, but the international Polaris Business class is still one of the best transcon options until you get into First Class territory.

So we go to their customer service and get the tickets, come back in line and AGAIN we're told wait somewhere else until another 30mins to get in line for boarding. So we couldn't even sit down by the gate cause they had it blocked off and only let a few in. Wait what??!! So we board and no air vents for individual air flow. I thought I was going to passed out from being hot. As for the meal? You get what they have! No choice!!! It was more Vegetarian than anything. So if you fly with them or connect with them through United, now you know.
