Maria did an excellent job with my facial and my skin felt really refreshed. It saddens my heart that today this business owner chose to add additional hidden fees. Essentially you're paying twice for services. There's a loss of gratitude for being chosen as a business and instead a sense of entitlement. I was charged an additional 5.10% in fees that are business costs. These additional business fees should be explicitly disclosed to all clients just like your cancellation policy. I'm not exactly the kind of hipster kid who needs the fancy neo-pompadour cut with the slick back look and such. I'm also not very cool like some folks who have really awesome hair and are the lustful idols of other style-savvies. Nope. My hair pretty much does one thing and there's a whole lot of it on top of my big dome. Chalk that up to a gnarly, Nordic-style beard on my face and you've got one funky hair project on your hands. Enter: Jenn Jones of Aviary. (Huge props to my friend and Charlotte stylist, Stephanie, for the recommendation!) Holy wow. First off, this place is super quaint. It looks like it should live inside of Anthropologie....but it's way cooler. It's rather cozy and super hip. Not the kind of hip that makes you want to lose 10lbs either. Jenn already knows you. That's what I like. She doesn't push anything on you or make you feel self-conscious about your dome piece. She asked me what I was looking for or what I normally do and she put her own spin on it. I'm not even sure what you'd coin my cut as, but she did some wonderful new things to it. She added a lot of texture so my crazy double-crown doesn't make my head look like a bunch of trees that just got blown over. She even trimmed my sideburns low enough to taper my beard. Whaaaat?! Now that's a service I've never received. So, after the fact, not only does she have my hair looking nicely shaped, but my face, too? Winner, winner! It's a little more than I'm used to paying, but when you have that kind of service and friendly atmosphere, I'm never going to balk at the price. Such a blessing to discover Aviary, Amy, and her amazing team! First, I had an oxygen facial and eyebrow/lash tinting with Michelle. Not only was the facial itself a great experience, but my skin, my lashes and my brows looked amazing. Then, a week later, Amy performed microneedling on my face and neck. As I just had the procedure today, I can't report the results yet. But, I can say that Amy was wonderful to work with, extremely communicative, and attentive to my personal needs. Amy took great care in her work and made me feel comfortable and at ease. Lastly, I saw Victoria for a cut and balayage. Victoria did an incredible job and my hair looks fabulous! I received a gift card to the Aviary for Christmas and decided to use it before my wedding. I went in a few months ago and I have to say, they made a forever client out of me! The staff is obviously very knowledgeable and so friendly, but did not try to sell me on a bunch of products outside of my budget. Rather, they suggested a few options and gave me some samples but did not push anything on me. I ended up ordering two of the products they recommended, and my face has really never felt or looked better. Amy the owner is amazing, my orders are delivered by her and she always offers me a refund or swap if something I ordered is out of stock. I had an ultrasonic facial with Kelly and it was truly life-changing. My skin feels the best that it's ever felt, and I've had friends (and strangers) stop me to say "Your skin looks so amazing, you're glowing." Since this was my first facial ever, we had a consultation and then determined that the alchemist facial was the best fit. Dee was super nice. She walked me through each step of the facial. TLDR; This is the place. Dee is a miracle worker. I came in yesterday with the dull, lifeless (and kind of disheartening) skin I've been dealing with lately. I signed up for the microdermabrasion facial, thinking my skin would get its needed boost and my face could have some sort of fresh start. I laid down and enjoyed the serenity of the cozy room (perfectly heated table included), and Dee went to work. As she slathered my face with the luxurious products, she answered all my nagging questions. How do I have a manageable skin routine and still have a balance in my bank account? What do I use when, and why? So on and so forth. By the time we got to the actual microdermabrasion part I was full of information and assurance that skin improvement is achievable and within reach. Her enthusiasm about skin care actually had me excited about mine, instead of debilitated by the options and information out there. The micro did not hurt at all, it felt like a light scrub...with a cat's tongue. She went over my face with great detail. The wand sloughed off dead skin as I went into full relaxation mode. There was a sauna-esque fan at some point, before my face was covered in a retinol mask. While the retinol mask was on I got a perfectly pressured hand, neck and shoulder massage (!!!!!!). There was more slathering once that came off, and then poof! I was done. My skin is dewy. My skin is radiant (which I definitely never thought was attainable for non-celebrities). AND, I feel empowered. So yeah-- I recommend a visit. read more

Today was my first facial in well over a year and I was really looking forward to it. The facial itself with Michelle was fabulous, and it was the indulgent birthday treat I wanted. That said, I didn't pay to be ingredient-shamed for a moisturizer that my dermatologist recommends and quite frankly I've already ruled out that it irritates or exacerbates my acne over the course of 10 years. I get that some people appreciate it, but I'm not open to being guilted for my retinol and other derm recommended products. A simple, "Are you open to some product recommendations?" would have avoided this entire exchange. And, candidly, vilifying a single ingredient is such a pet peeve of mine and why the "natural" skincare craze has since lost me. Yes, I was actually already well aware that dimethicon is a controversial ingredient, but it's not a problem for me (and I also don't use it daily but that's pretty besides the point.) And then the defensiveness and persistence of the esthetician really sent me over the edge. The girl at the front desk even jumped in! I was so eager to leave. It's pretty clear to me the game here is to shame those of us who use even a single drug store brand product. Honestly, I wish I'd just lied when asked because I should have known from my last visit that would happen. My acne stems from my hormones, not sleeping enough while I'm part of an active pandemic response team, and Cheerios functioning as a major food group while I work 60+ hours every week during said pandemic. But thanks for the facial and getting my blood pressure up during my ONE day off this week. Needless to say I won't be returning. It's very clear I'm not the target clientele. I recently got a massage here from Alexis and I would go back in a heartbeat! It was incredible! Price/Atmosphere/Experience: I had a 90 minute massage for $130. It was a gift from my husband and wow was it a great gift! Alexis is very considerate of any special issues. She uses all organic products. She uses cream instead of oil. She tells you everything she uses and makes sure you have no allergies. The massage is done in a very small but cozy room, located within a salon. I thought the salon would be noisy but it wasn't bad. The light music the masseuse played drowned out the other noise. Location/Parking: It's located right by Krog Street Market, so if you want to treat yourself to lunch or tea/coffee before or after, there are plenty of options. There is a parking deck; I paid $4 for parking which was a bummer since you'd think they would validate, but considering the massage was a gift, $4 was a small price to pay! :) read more

The other night at Blake's, as I was getting down on the dancefloor, I felt someone touch the back of my head in a loving way. Pretty much, somebody was petting me. I turned around fully expecting a friendly face to only be greeted by a quite attractive stranger, who, when caught in the awkward act could only say "but your hair! It's so bouncy and thick-- I couldn't help it!" Given the circumstances one finds themselves in at Blake's, this didn't seem at all creepy: more charming. So what does this have to do with the Aviary? Well, just that very morning I had my locks did by Sidney of Salon Vagabond. He had shorn off nearly two inches of craptacular ends, leaving me with something a little bit Emma Pillsbury, all parts awesome. For color, he totally listened to my inane rambling and came up with something truly creative with his collection of organic, smell-free dyes. A great haircut, for sure, but here's why I'm sticking with Sidney: -The Aviary is badass: small, friendly, comfortable... kind of like what you'd want your apartment to be like. - Sidney's the kind of guy that makes his clients mixed CDs. In fact, he does just that. And he's got good taste. - Oh, and did I mention he's crazy gorgeous? Yeah, gorgeous enough to mention in a review I know he'll read, thereby making our next encounter slightly awkward. But whatevs, I'm sure he gets it all the time. Yeah, he's that pretty. This salon totally calms me down...unlike other salons, it's not a chaotic mess of hair dryers, fluorescent lighting, and hairdresser conversations, but it's a serene sanctuary of an industrial loft space with natural light (especially when the sun is out). Ben & J.J. described the look and feel perfectly- Anthropologie in a salon setting. And as you all know, I love me some Anthropologie hipster vibe. Jenn is a cool cat without being intimidating...she's very laid back and chats with you just enough while working on my hair (perfect balance between too chatty and not talking at all). I feel like I can trust her to do what my hair needs, without me having to micromanage or over-describe. Plenty of free parking so you don't have to worry about parking tickets or walking too far in the rain or humidity and having your salon 'do ruined....I park at the very far end of the Studioplex building. Only negative is that the appointments go fast because Jenn is very popular. But at least I can make appointments over email! read more

After the unexpected loss of my stylist after 10 years of stellar service, I spent the past year wandering around to various salons and shops looking for someone who could once again work some magic with my coarse, wavy hair. As fate would have it, I happened on an introduction to Yelp Atlanta's newest CM Ben and his lovely wife JJ who recently relocated to Atlanta and had been in need of similar services. They referred me to the incomparable Jenn Jones and the crew over at Aviary and for that I am forever grateful. Aviary occupies the farthest corner of the Studioplex complex in the O4W just behind Krog Street near the water tower on Auburn. Furnished with reclaimed wood and other natural accents, you honestly feel like a bird in the best of nests. They are super accommodating with scheduling, genuine in conversation, and simply the best at their craft. Jenn Jones is the epitome of solid customer service. From emails to texts, she'll consult on just about anything you have floating around in your head and give you an honest opinion on where your locks should lie. Recently honored as the best colorist in Atlanta, I've lended myself to her colorful whim with shades of green and blue over the past few visits. Her skills with the blade are second to none as well, and she has given this kid on chemo a shot of confidence he hasn't had in quite some time. Listen folks, here's how it works: If you want to have rockstar hair, get your hair done by a rock star. Literally! Upon turning 25, I decided to finally go through with it: I decided to be a redhead. However, I wasn't about to trust my virgin locks to just any salon-- It had to live up to my strict standards for toxin-free products. After a bit of Googling and Yelping, I was fortunate enough to stumble upon Vagabond Salon and their toxin-free and organic hair dyes. I immediately set up a consultation with Jason, where we both bonded over our musical interests as he told me about how he had played a set with his band on the radio station I work at. The hair appointment that followed was even more reassuring: I use a wheelchair to get around, and Jason not only went to great lengths to accomodate my needs, but was also very quick on his feet and willing to try something new. By the end of our 2.5 hour session, I was left with a haircut that had layers in all the right places and mermaid red locks that not only made me feel like a total badass, but also brought my childhood dream of being Ariel that much closer to reality. In the weeks since, I've seen my hair color slowly shift shades and blend in with my natural dark blonde / light brown tones. It now looks so real that a natural redhead classmate recently complimented me on it! A vote of confidence if there ever was one! My only disappointment is that the mermaid red color didn't hold longer, but as that is a concern of many natural (and even non-natural) red hair colors, I'll just have to suck it up and get it re-done in a month or so to start the summer off right. My super-hot hair artist, Sidney, has set up his own shop at what he calls Salon Vagabond, a part of The Aviary beauty collective at the Studioplex development. The salon space fits Sidney to a "T," emanating urban and bucolic vibes at the same time. The exposed pipes in the ceiling, shabby chic decor and overall city-meets-country aura provide just the atmosphere I need to plop in Sidney's chair and let him have his way with my hair. Sidney is a hairdresser indeed, but I prefer to call him a hair artist. His intense focus on bringing out people's personality via their hair illustrates his dedication to this craft. I have developed a trusting relationship with Sidney, knowing that my tresses are in the absolute best hands. When I'm out and about, at least one person usually comments on my hair cut, which is both edgy and easy to maintain. Plus, Sidney is one of the sexiest men on Earth. read more

Let me start with, I'm not a salon kind of gal. I don't wear make-up, I don't go in for scented anything and I am LOATHE to let strangers anywhere near my face and head. I caveat with that because Aviary is the perfect fit for me. The space is cool and comfortable, Jenni has given me the best hair cuts of my life, the sales concept is low pressure, I got the hair cut I asked for (I looked better than the photo I brought), I was made to feel comfortable and Jenni didn't balk at the several hours it took to cut the ton of hair I have from below my shoulders to super short and undercut. TL:DR- if you are salon-phobic like me, this is the place for you. I walked out looking stellar, with the current, edgy, super fun cut I wanted, having purchased the product I needed, feeling relaxed and happy with my whole experience. read more

Nice environment, nice staff, worst haircut of my life. I went in wanting face framing fringe. I specifically said "I've had bangs I do NOT want bangs" yet I ended up with sections well above my eyebrow. Each time I stopped her during the cut to try and save my hair she proceeded to cut it shorter. Also I pointed out the fact I have a cowlick as soon as I sat in the chair. Then 10 minutes later she acted surprised that my hair wasn't behaving and asked "do you have a cowlick?" To fix things she once again cut cut cut far too short for me to even pin back while I wait for it to grow out. Lastly, she had no idea what to do with my naturally curly hair and blow dried it so large I looked like a lion or an extra in an 80's movie. I was mortified and my hair looked super dry and unhealthy. Usually strangers point out how shiny and movie star-esque my hair looks so butchering it this bad was a rare accomplishment. If you have fine, thin, straight hair then this is probably the place for you. But if you have any type of texture you should probably go somewhere else. read more
