This is our second time here and we've loved both times visiting. The first time we did the tour which was fun and worth doing (and informative if you're a nerd like me). The second time visiting we just opted to do some cocktails from the tasting menu. Both time the staff was awesome, friendly, and really seemed to enjoy what sharing the different cocktails. There are a lot of different cocktail variations so even if gin isn't your favorite, you'll still find a cocktail you like. We live in Seattle, but this will always be a stop for us when we visit Portland. $35 for 5 mini-cocktails. Let's get that out of the way. OR you can taste a mini cocktail, 5 times - or just one cocktail ($5 or $6). So you could come in for a teeny tiny drank, and leave for $5 if you wanted. But who would do that? We had such a fun time here - olcc setup makes this like a "wine tasting", but limiting the total amount of alcohol that can be served to 2.5 ounces per person. The "tasting" is 5 mini-cocktails, served on a board like a beer tasting. They also rotate 5 monthly cocktails you can order instead. There IS a "charcuterie" vending machine (which I initially scoffed at thinking it would be full of Slim Jims), which has gourmet crackers (Beechers!), comte cheese, other cheeses, like...good snacking stuff! Oops, I didn't look at the prices however. The service was good - the bartenders were really overwhelmed seemed like everyone came in at once, which isn't their fault. Different setup here due to their olcc regulations in which they do clearly outline right when entering but still kinda odd if coming in cold. They are allowed to do 2.5oz of liquor per person max (so roughly 1 cocktail elsewhere) and their cocktails are 0.5oz but slightly smaller size in general. They have tours for $35 per person which we didn't do. We did a taster flight for $25 which had 5 cocktails (can do individually for $7 ea). The are all tap cocktails but did taste good and service was friendly. Space is nice as well being able to see the manufacturing behind the bar. They have some snacks in a vending machine and don't allow outside food. Would be cool if they had real food to get a full liquor license and just food in general. read more

What a cool location and set up of displaying the aviation gin. We had been greeted as soon as we walked in and the set up was very welcoming. The location was a little off the beaten path but that probably was for the better. The choices for the gin flight was awesome. The gin drinks tasted sooo good and I am not personally a gin drinker. My husband is the gin drinker and he enjoyed the flavor profiles of the aviation gin also. They do have a strict 2 and a half ounces per person a day. They have it so when you check in they check your ID and give you a bracelet which has tabs which they take off each time they pour you a drink. The drink offers are limited to two different flight experiences and you can't mix and match. They have experiences to tour but we hadn't signed up for it prior so we couldn't take one, plus we had our kids with us so don't know if we could have. The seating was plentiful which large and small areas to hang out while you do your tasting. Overall it was a good experience but I wish they had more to offer as of single drink choices. The don't have a dining selection as the only food is from a vending machine that has cheese, meat and such for purchase. That is also one of the reasons they have a strict ounce per person rule because if a distillery is serving alcohol they have to limit people if they don't have food to offer as a dining option. Oh and they do have a large selection of logo merchandise and such for sale. Overall I am glad we went. You see Ryan Reynolds office but if you ask the staff who works there they say they've seen him maybe once. The drinks are fine. You have to do it on the ticket system. Not a great deal and you can't make modifications. Seemed very corporate. read more

I booked a tour for myself, my husband, and my friend for my friend's bday. It was a relaxed and simple tour. Towards the end, we got to solve some puzzles/problems, which was fun! Then of course, we ordered the flight after the tour and got to talk to the staff a bit. Their staff are some of the friendliest and coolest! Aviation American Gin is known for being partly owned and fully marketed by Ryan Reynolds. You may have seen their hilarious commercials on TV. Well, Portland is lucky to be their base of operations. And this location is their retail store and tasting room, which is open to the public. Their website says advance reservations recommended, but walk-ins welcome. All ages welcome but of course you must be 21+ to sample. I walked in one weekday evening with no problem. At the front desk they checked my ID and gave me a tasting bracelet. That's kind of unique! You redeem a tab on your bracelet in exchange for a drink. Drinks are served in sample sizes, not full pours. And of course they all use Aviation Gin. Out of the drinks I sampled, most were tasty but there was one miss that I would not order again. The tasting room is large and open, with aviation themed decor throughout. Ryan Reynolds Ryan Reynolds Ryan Reynolds. There, now that we've got THAT out of the way... My wife likes gin. For me, the jury is still out on the stuff. At least it was, until our visit last weekend. Nominally, I'm more of a scotch and whiskey guy. Vodka? Meh. Tequila. Ugh. No. Gin? I mean, if you like licking the dew off of an Evergreen tree...sure? So yeah, not the biggest fan, previously. However, Aviation makes a eminently smooth, sippable spirit that doesn't leave me feeling like I drank the water in the basin under my Christmas tree. Before we get into the drinks, let's talk about the tasting room itself: expansive, spacious, uncluttered...classy. True to its name, it feels like a swanky airport lounge, complete with a (fake) split-flap destination display, with a few hidden, cheeky callbacks to RR movies (i.e. Free City, etc). Colossal paned windows separate the tasting room from the distillery itself, but give you a fantastic glimpse into their daily operations. Tours are available, but by reservation only - you might be able to luck into a walk-in, but with as many people as passed through during our Saturday afternoon visit, that seems unlikely. As they operate under a limited liquor license, your selection of cocktails is...well, limited. Upon entry, you are given a wristband with five removable tags, each redeemable for one sample beverage. Your best bet is to order a flight (Get it? Aviation?! Flight?!*) of five drinks, from their list of 8 regular offerings, plus any seasonal specials (of which there were three for Valentine's Day, but only two still available). Between the two of us and our separate flights, my wife and I ended up with at least one of every cocktail, with a couple of repeats. 1) Ryan's Nitro Negroni - It's a negroni. The classic. A little tart, a little bitter, but all good. 2) Gimlet - This one is dangerous; it basically tastes like limeade. So smooth, you could drink a few and have no idea you were getting drunk until you hit the floor. 3) Gin Gin Mule - Hot gin on gin(ger) action! WAY better than a Moscow Mule, and I'm saying that as someone who loves them. 4) Aviation G&T - Probably the weakest of the bunch. My wife prefers soda to tonic, so this one didn't do much for her. Packed far less punch, flavor-wise, to anything else on the menu. 5) Saturn - My personal favorite. The gin, Falernum and passionfruit combo was something I'd not experienced before, and it was both familiar and exotic. Really nice! 6) Cranberry Cosmo - "Tastes like Christmas in a glass." The cinnamon stick really makes this one a winner. 7) Will You Berry Me? - A Negroni with a strawberry twist. A perfect drink for Valentine's Day! 8) Burnin' For You - Not available during our visit. Seems like they were out of one of the ingredients. 9) Your Sweetheart - I don't think I sampled this one from my wife's flight (or if I did, I don't remember doing so), so I'll abstain from commenting. It'll probably rotate out before anyone reads this review. All these wonderful beverages, coupled with stellar service, all housed within the aforementioned fantastic tasting room, has made a strong case (to me) that I've just been drinking crappy gin before today. We booked this back in December. I was trying to give my hubby a gift idea for Xmas. I said why don't we do a tour of Aviation then you don't have to wrap it. He was down with that. I'm not normally any kind of a hard alcohol drinker but I figured the portions would be small and I could pick and choose what I wanted. We made a reservation in advance but so did this large group of men (who appeared to be co-workers or colleagues of some sort). They told me large groups normally call (these folks did not) so they gave us a private tour and let the large group go in two intervals behind us. That was somewhat of a relief as I'm still in sheltering-in-place mode. They give you a small tour and let you take pictures (with no flash-but who uses one anyway)? They show you the way they bottle it. They talk about the design of the bottles which are beautiful, I will agree. These are the kind of bottles your mother in the 1960s would save and put colored water in them to display in the window. They do talk about their largest distribution is to British Columbia. They attribute that to part owner Ryan Reynolds and that is where he hails from. They impart the story of how he became involved in the gin business, etc. They finally take you to Ryan's office (not really I'm sure) but very fun. And it's a little escape room. We hurried through that part as we had the large group behind us. Plus Cody, our tour guide led us through some of it since there were only two of us. They normally do groups of six to eight so somewhat of a disadvantage for us two. It's very fun and great to take pictures there. I would definitely go back with some friends. Afterward, you take your wristband (which you receive when you come in) and can get up to five small drinks. You are not obligated to drink that many but you have paid for that many. They are small pours in small glasses so you can taste the varieties of drinks they prepare. There is food in a vending machine and they have utensils at the bar. It didn't look like anything I was interested in. Eat before you go. Make the reservation for the tour well in advance. The staff is friendly and they all are there to ensure you have a great time. There is definitely a reason tours are booked so far out at Aviation. I'd say in large part, people come for Ryan Reynolds, not necessarily Gin. Rowan did our tour and we got to start early since she said the full group was there. I loved gin prior to Aviation being associated with Ryan Reynolds and also loved him before his association as well. So it's a great marriage for me!! The tour was very cool, informative, fun, we got great photos and learned a lot. The end of the tour "Ryan's office" is an escape room and it was fun. It's lighthearted and easy so don't worry. And when you're done, you get a 1/2 oz gin tasting and mini cocktail. We all received the Aviation cocktail, as that's what the gin was made for!! I am not crazy about it, but it's my husband'a favorite cocktail. You can then purchase "up to" 3 additional mini cocktails, which are closely monitored by your tour wristband. Between my husband and I we tasted every drink on the menu. The G&T is bright and refreshing. Light and easy drinking. The Saturn was the biggest hit in our group as a whole as it had a lovely passion fruit flavor and it was sweet but not overly sweet. Just delicious. I loved finding a new favorite!! My husband had the Mule, which I felt like was Christmas in a cup!!! And if I hadn't chosen a Negroni as my final cocktail, I would have gotten one of those to do a full try rather than just a sip! Ryan's Nitro Negroni was my final drink and I LOVE Negronis!! They're my absolute favorite cocktail, and my go to. My husband had the Gimlet which was okay to me but I loved the Saturn. We had a group of mostly non gin drinkers, so it was interesting to see what everyone thought of the flavors and different drinks. Obviously we all wanted more, but I have a bottle of Aviation at home so I did a Negroni later on to end the evening. I've been to many distilleries, and the one was the most disappointing. I didn't realize that they only have ONE spirit to try: no navy strength, no infusions, nothing. So if you go for a tasting, you either just have to get a cocktail using the gin, or you get a flight of mini cocktails (note: they are only allowed to serve each person ~2 oz of alcohol per day, so if you do mini cocktails, each one has less than 1 oz of alcohol in it). And the tour costs $35/person, so if you're a couple, that's $70 gone right from the get-go. Yes, the space is modern, and the association with Ryan Reynolds is cool, but that's it. read more

The tour slots were booked for the day, but they had open visitor hours so I'd figured I'd just hang out at the bar and "catch a flight." We made reservations in advance for the tour. Checking in was a breeze. Our tour had a few annoying people on it, a drink at the start of the tour would have helped ease that pain. They do have some fun Ryan Reynolds type humor figured in, but it almost was a little over the top at times. The distillery has a lot of room to grow. The building is relatively empty, not a lot to see once you are inside. You get two drinks with the tour. The drinks were good, but I don't think the value was there. We tried a couple more at the bar before we left, again... tasty, but overpriced. You can have a better (and more cost effective) experience at most of the wineries in the area. Perfect date night especially as we got to take a private tour. My husband loves gin and Aviation is by far the best for making cocktails so when we learned it was created by a bartender that made perfect sense. The cocktails were excellent and we were able to buy some things to make great cocktails at home. I recommend booking a tour when you book your flight to Portland if you are visiting. To preface this I must first set the stage for what may have been on of the single most enjoyable experiences I've had in gin. For I am not normally a fan of gin, as whisky and bourbon are my drinks of choice, I was astounded at the flavors and pure enjoyment of the experience. That being said, I was surprised beyond any expectation, no more so however, than being the first to enter this establishment upon their opening. That was an unplanned happenstance but was certainly a fun experience! To give this rave review without mentioning the staff would be a disservice to the experience they provided. For those who do not know, Ryan Reynolds is an owner of this company and this establishment did him well. He can be proud of their environment and personnel working behind the bar. They are friendly, knowledgeable, and ripe with personality perfect for this experience. The gin, as that is why we are all here, is without a doubt, the best gin I have had. No hyperbole, and keep in mind, I am not normally a fan of gin. So when my wife said we should check this place out I said sure, expecting to force down the drinks and be a supportive husband. This was not my experience. I enjoyed each and every drink with new eyes, the eyes of someone who can say they are a fan of gin. I will break down the drinks in order of the flight. Though the simplest review I can write would be that any drink provided to me here I would take happily, as not a single one disappointed and each and every one provided something new and exciting. The break down: The Aviation. This cocktail was clean, sharp, and packed a wonderful flavor. Gave this a 5 out of 5 and excited to order again soon. Ryan's Nitro Negroni: I loved this drink. If you're craving an old fashioned, this is the closest a gin drink can get to meeting those standards. Absolutely wonderful. Only giving this a 4 out of 5 because my wife did not enjoy it nearly as much as me, but she is not a huge old fashioned fan to begin with, so that makes sense. Saturn: Like the planet, it is out of this world! Okay, couldn't resist the pun. But it truly is a fantastic drink. If you're feeling something more citrusy, this is the drink for you. Floradora: I will preface this review by saying I absolutely despise ginger beer. I can't. I just, can't. So this drink was just not met for me and destined to do poorly. I gave it a 3 out of 5, and that is purely my bias towards ginger beer. My wife on the other hand, really enjoyed this drink, and even with my distaste for ginger beer I would still be very happy with this drink if ordered. Fizzy Bees Knees: Honey forward and crisp in taste, this Bees Knees was excellent. Gave it a 4 out of 5 merely because my wife prefers more ginger forward bees knees, but I was an absolute fan. Over all, my opinion of gin has evolved after this experience. I look forward to coming back and taking the tour. And if Ryan Reynolds is reading this, please know, these people are doing you proud. Staff was nice and friendly, but there were only three of them, not bad when it wasn't busy. When it got busy, we were ignored. I understand, I worked in the restaurant business for 20 years, but we were sitting at the middle of the bar. So, we ordered 2 cocktails each and it got busy. We sat with our glasses empty for 20 minutes, no one checking on us, seeing if we wanted to try anything else, which we did. Not sure if it was because we were older, I noticed this couple around the same age as us being ignored also, they sat at the bar after us. Instead, when the person came to clean right beside us, I had to get her attention to ask for the check. Not sure if I'm coming back. read more

But, the bar is great with cocktail flights and great service. They do got little bar snacks and because it is a distillery you are only allowed 5 mini cocktails which are good to get the day going. You can buy a 750 ML bottle for $25 so you can sip that on the curb outside if you need more. read more

I love everything about Ryan Reynolds. The only man I would "switch teams", and once I did Blake is the only woman who could convert me back. So I was very disappointed that the Aviation experience was so terrible. Its a nice facility and everyone is very friendly. I have had the gin before and its good gin. But the cocktails are atrocious. Classics like the negroni and gimlet were not right. The negroni looked and tasted as if they has used dry rather than sweet vermouth. The gimlet tasted like pure margarita mix from a cheap plastic bottle. The G&T used some disgusting tonic water. Why, Ryan....why?? read more
