My family and I have been going to doctor Nguyen for almost 20 years, with our last visit being in April, 2024. We scheduled for our next routine cleaning with him for 10/12/24. It was NOT FOR DEEP CLEANING. Then, we learned he was retiring and Dr. Avila would be the new dentist taking over the office. Since he was brand new to us and I wanted to confirm if he'd be in network with my insurance, I called and spoke to his staff on 10/4/24. Instead of clearly stating, no, we're not in network with UnitedHealthcare, she said "yes, he takes your insurance, as long as it's a PPO." For someone in the field this response is acceptable and easily understood, but for a lay person like myself it was very misleading. Our family showed up to our appointment, and my husband and I thought we were getting our routine cleaning done, just as we do every 6 months. There were no discussions from anyone, including the doctor himself, that we were getting deeping cleaning that day or why it was even necessary for us to need one, considering we've been in compliance with our cleaning for the past 20 years. When I was offered the "numbing mouth rinse" I declined because why would anyone expect that to be necessary for a routine cleaning? My husband was also offered the numbing mouth rinse. He was asked "do you want to try this numbing mouth rinse that Dr. Avila came up with? It'll make the cleaning less painful and it's free of charge." My husband replied, "the cleaning does not and have not hurt, but sure I'll try it if it's free." Then, we were approached about taking the kids x-rays and I consent for them to have their bitewings taken. Besides these bitewings x-rays, no one mentioned anything about taking 2D pictures of their mouths or why they were even necessary for their routine cleaning purpose, and why extra x-ray images were taken without our knowledge or consent. Then, my husband returned on 10/17 and I returned on 10/28 for our bondings and no other cleaning services were done on those days. I remember the assistant said, "you're here for your deep cleaning." That was the first time anyone mentioned the words "deep cleaning" to me. I was shocked and said no I wasn't and asked if she was sure. Then, Dr. Avila came out and said I was there for 2 bondings. We were told each of us had to pay $85 out of pocket and $25 from each would be applied to our yearly $25 deductibles. However, I'd already met my $25 deductible on 4/22/24, and I didn't see this $25 applied on my EOB for either service dates, on 10/12 or 10/28. Why did I have to pay for a deductible that was already met? Fast forward a week, I reviewed all 6 of our EOBs and realized both my husband and I were billed for deep cleaning, on 2 separate days, along with a bunch of 2D pictures for all 4 of us, and the amounts billed for all those codes/services were almost all exceeding maximum allowed per insurance. I have spoken to two of my dentist friends, as well as friends and families who have had deep cleaning done, and they all confirmed that anesthetic is required, that it has to be done on 2 separate days, 2 weeks apart, for it is painful and is done on half of the mouth at a time, and that insurance won't allow payment if not billed on 2 different days. Yet, I was told by his staff that anesthetic isn't required and that it can be done in one day. I emailed the EOBs to him, and he called me on 11/8/24, but I was too angry to have a meaningful discussion. After calming down I returned his call on 11/15 but he was busy. Since I haven't heard back from him, I decided to send him an email on 11/18 to express my dissatisfaction with his office's misleading way of communication, with the services provided, or the lack thereof rather, and with the outrageous reimbursement amount, $4504.88 (including the $170 from us), which he received for cleaning 4 mouths and for doing 4 bondings. On 11/18, we texted and I provided several of my available times for us to discuss, and he said, "I'm so sorry about the phone tag and all else. I will reach out to on your available times to address your concerns. Thank you and I'm sorry about what's going on. I will correct it." His response made me feel better and somewhat restored my faith in humanity. However, we still didn't get a chance to talk after 3 days. Then, on 11/21, I got called to cover a shift last minute. I texted right away to update him and provided several days worth of other available options. His final reply on that day was, "no worries. Let me take a look at the schedule and get back to you asap." It is now nearly a month. I was assured that my concerns would be addressed with a return call, but despite waiting for an extended period, I have yet to hear from him. I'm frustrated and disappointment, for this is not the level of professionalism I expect from a healthcare provider. read more

I have THE WORST anxiety going to the dentist and haven't felt more at ease since my childhood dentist who no longer practices. I am SOOO happy that my sister recommended Dr. Avila. I had numerous fillings that needed to be done and others that needed to be replaced. It was painless and he communicated everything that needed to be done while it was being done. Not only was I comfortable throughout the whole procedure and after the healing, he is completely honest and moral when it comes to procedures. Before going to him, I went to a different dentist who said I needed a root canal a crown and many other things. He looked at my X-rays and gave me his honest opinion about it all and determined that only fillings were needed. I met Dr. Avila back in April finally ready after years wanting to get Invisalign and I had missing tooth I needed to get an implant for. I had the typical case of having braces and not wearing my retainer. He took me through the journey with such detail and results that were just as I dreamed would be. I've never been so happy to go see a denist as well as his lovely staff every appointment. I also go in for my regular teeth cleanings and teeth whitening with him. I came in the morning to receive multiple treatments for my teeth. As soon as I arrive in their office, I easily felt at ease and was welcomed by friendly and professional staff! Procedures to be done were thoroughly explained and questions I had were answered/addressed with genuine care and concern. Even Dr. Avila himself personally greeted me as I waited for my turn. Place was easy to find on the map with ample street parking. Office is clean and modern-looking and had a positively hectic but happy vibe! Dr. Avila had a plan for me and executed it to perfection! He clearly explained the procedures to be done and addressed any lingering questions I had. There was no pain during the procedures considering I had multiple treatments in one sitting! In an age where you are just another patient or number in the day, its is refreshing to meet a medical professional who genuinely cares about your health and wellbeing. Dr. Avilla inherited an amazing staff from Dr. Yang. He has since brought in his own style of care that is highly recommendable. He is patient and thorough, very meticulous and has a very gentle bedside manner. I never felt like services I didn't need were forced on me.
