Please save yourself the stress of renting from this fraudulent operation. I'll be reporting them to the Better Business Bureau and the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce. If you do rent from here, be prepared for bogus charges, and to dispute them with your credit card company. I rented a car for a week and used it a handful of times. There were never any other passengers or animals in the car, just some luggage in the backseat. When I returned the car I was told "there was a dog in the car, and you will be charged". I said that there had not been a dog in the car. He said "Yes, there was a dog in the car". I told him that if there were any hairs in the car, they must have been there when I picked it up. He refused to acknowledge this possibility, instead insisting that I was lying and had a dog in the backseat. We went back and forth a few more times before I realized that it was completely futile. He said I could go home and clean the car myself, if I preferred that to a $250 charge. Feeling I had no choice, I did this, which seriously disrupted my work day and created a lot of stress. I called Avis and after a 45-minute wait, they told me that during pick-up I should have carefully inspected the interior of the car before leaving the lot with it. I told the customer service representative that I assume the state of the car when I receive it reflects their standard of cleanliness, and it's not my job to inspect or question it unless I have a problem with it, which I didn't. If they expect customers to examine the interior of the car, this should be stated clearly when they have you inspect the exterior for damage. Even if I had inspected the interior, a few stray hairs in the back would not have registered for me as a problem, and I certainly wouldn't have thought that I would be held responsible for it upon return. In every other rental car experience I have had in my life, a small amount of dirt, dust and hair has been considered the result of normal usage and I have never been charged for what I assume is their routine cleaning in between rentals. Ever. The experience at this location was astonishing to me - both the arrogant behavior of the manager, and the absurd gaslighting from customer service. I can't fathom why Avis would continue with this behavior when there have been such widespread complaints about it. In the end, after I cleaned the car, he said I wouldn't be charged, but I'm not so sure this is the end of it. They seem willing to fabricate excuses for charging their customers, and the manager seems to delight in making people upset. Given how drastically this deviates from the norm of car rentals, I believe this all amounts to fraud. Since the corporation evidently doesn't care, all I can do is warn others! read more

My rental was a pristine Honda HRV that was super fun to drive. Wayne and his coworker used to run the Avis location on Gilman St. before it closed due to the roundabout construction on Gilman. The only thing shiftier than a rental car is this co-branded Avis/Budget franchisee. Arrived at the 7:30 am opening time to pick up the car I reserved online for $70/weekend. The printed contract stated $130. When asked about the discrepancy the owner said 'it's $60 for the extra 30 minutes beyond three days'. Huh? By now it's 7:40 am. Turns out the following Monday is a holiday and they don't open until 8 am. Since I "can't return (the car) until 8 am, it's an extra $60 'late fee'". OK-I'll wait 20 minutes, rent the car today at 8:00 am and thus stay within the three day window. "Too late," he quips, "the transaction is complete and your credit card's been charged!" When I challenged his lack of a signed rental agreement he countered "all I can do now is void your existing reservation and book a new one" -at a substantially higher price. No thanks. As I walked out he magically gained the ability to credit my previously 'unchangeable' 7:30 am "transaction" $60-but only after I returned the car, and (naturally) with nothing confirmed in writing. Righhhht. Read the other Yelp reviews for how these shady undocumented future 'promises' have played out. I can only imagine the return damage inspection. Walked across the street, hopped in a Gig-car, drove where I needed to go and conveniently "returned" it right in front of my own house. We asked for a AWD car. We were told that we had to call the on the morning of the rental to secure one, since they could not reserve it by drivetrain in their system. Inconvenient, but not a big problem. I called that morning, and they said they had one available, but I had to hurry to get to the rental place to claim it before anyone else. Okay so I stressed out and got there as soon as I could. And it was still there, great. I made sure to ask them explicitly that it was in fact an AWD car, since we were driving up to lake tahoe and expected snowfall. They assured me it was. After they wasted half an hour of my time in getting my change of car registered in their system, we were off to the mountains with a $15 a day more expensive car. So far so good. Three days later, today: Disaster. We were driving back, and it's snowing, as expected. But as I'm trying to drive up a hill, the front wheels just spin, and we can't get up. I think it's weird that only the front wheels spin, and look around on the car controls to see if there is a button to activate the AWD. Nothing. There is no owners manual in the car, so we call the rental place to ask about it. After being on hold forever, and being transferred twice, the lady informed us that the car we are driving is in fact a 2 wheel drive car, front wheel drive, the worst for the snow. I have experience driving in snowy conditions, and I was driving this car as if it was a AWD. If I knew it was FWD, I would have been much more careful about understeering. This misinformation was legitimately dangerous. After trying to accelerate from the bottom of the hill and get up with momentum, there is just no point, we can't get up. We can't get home. We're stuck. In an intersection by a slippery hill, in a fairly dangerous spot. So we call the rental place again, and tell them our situation. After two hours of calling and being stuck in this intersection, what we got is: "Budget won't let us send you a tow truck, because the car has not mechanically broken down". What!? We are stuck in a dangerous location, there's a snowstorm outside, we can't get home. We were lucky to have plenty of food and water in the car... After more calling and insisting on the fact that we cannot make it home, they finally did send a tow truck. Or at least they said they would. We got stuck at 11:30, and it's 5 pm and help has not arrived yet. They said they cannot promise to waive the towing fee, even though they are at fault for this situation. The next day when I return the car, the man in charge came to see the car and look straight to at a certain location to make me see a damage. I can ensure, this damage was not from me. Impossible to talk, he told straight, come to sign paperwork. He saw I was a tourist and told me, no worry, your credit card will take it in charge. He also told me you had to be more careful when you took the car with a smile at the corner of his mouth. Here my only fault was not to pay attention to every surface of the car's frame. I wish I had read the other reviews about this location. I have typically had good experiences renting from Budget but this experience was the worst and echoes the reviews from Chris G and Ezgi K below to a tee. If I could give 0 stars I would. I will NEVER rent from this location again and am planning to report them to Budget corporate offices. We rented an SUV for a week over the holidays. The car was lightly used, to get the family around Berkeley and for a trip up the coast. When I returned the car, it was in good condition, with normal usage, ie we cleaned the inside of the car, removed trash, left the car in good condition. The owner immediately told me that it was filthy (it was not) and that they would charge me up to $250 cleaning fee. He pointed to some stray dog hairs. Our small dog was in the car for part of the trip, but he was always on a lap or a blanket. Other than this, there were some leaves, bits of dirt and dust---normal stuff for a car that is used. We had not vacuumed the floor mats---it has never been expectation of a normal rental car experience to bring the car vacuumed and washed. Also, I get that some dogs are messy and shed a lot. This was not the case here. The level of foot debris here was well within the range of normal. I paid almost $500 for this rental and vacuuming it should be covered within that cost. It is unethical, if not illegal, to be charging extra cleaning fees in this way. But rather than pay the fee or argue with him, I took the car to a local car wash. The rental agent said I had "half an hour to return with the car" or would be charged extra, even though I was still within the rental window and grace period. I then had the car thoroughly vacuumed (at my expense) and the inside surfaces wiped down at a car wash down the street. I returned with the car and the rental agent still claimed it was messy, "with dog hairs," pointed to a few places. I refused to pay or go back and get it vacuumed again. The photos below show the state of the car when I returned it. The first and second photo are of the seat he claimed was "filthy". Photos 3, 4 and 5 are the state of the car after returning from vacuuming it myself---which he still felt was not clean to his standards. He then proceeded to lecture me about "taking better care of cars." I came away from this place angry and shaken about how nasty the guy was. I don't normally write negative reviews but in this case, feel compelled in part after reading the other reviews, and realizing that this all seems part of a scam to just extort money from customers. Beware. I reserved online and paid a little more for the convenience of the Kittredge St. location (Budget/Avis, doesn't seem to make a difference). It seemed worth it not to make a trek to the airport. No complaints until I returned the car from our Tahoe trip. There was the expected amount of grime on the outside of the car from snow driving. We had taken our small dog in the back, making sure to cover everything with a sheet first. There was a typical amount of dirt in the rear - specks of dried leaves, dust etc., but no spills, trash or stains. The male attendant (it seems like a mom and pop franchise) came inside after checking in the car and told me the car was "filthy," and that he had found dog hairs, and that he had clearly told me that there was up to a $200 cleaning fee when pets are taken in the rental (he had NOT told me this). I was shocked - was he expecting us to wash and vacuum the car before returning it? He then said he would charge an extra $100, I said I'd never return in that case, and he knocked it down to $50. I paid it and I will never go back. I recommend that others avoid this place. read more

I had rented a car from Avis at the Oakland airport, it got a flat tire and I was told to take it to this location sincere it was the closest to where I was. I called them "NO we have no cars, you go somewhere else!" Not kidding, this is how he talked on the phone. So I called Avis again and they said I had to go there because the guy had 14 cars available. I go there and the guy remembers me calling and says "I told you I have no cars! Before I was allowed to have the keys to the car I had rented, I was required to give the woman behind the counter (Lori) my social security number. When I protested, she told me that was standard in the rental car industry. OAK and SFO airports are even cheaper than their Berkeley locations.~minus 1 star I have rented cars from this Avis location on two separate occasions. The cars that I have received were ready when I arrived, top notch models, spotless, drove well, gas tanks were full, etc. I have nothing bad to say about their cars or the way they maintain them. Lori, the woman behind the counter on both occasions, was professional, expeditious, and she remembered my face when I returned after only renting from her 1 time...perhaps because I asked for her name when she demanded my social security number. If it weren't for the fact that my social security number had been demanded, with the "threat" that my rental was going to be canceled if I did not provide it, I might rent from Avis again. However, I was told that it would be fine if I used a debit card to rent, when I should have also been told that my social security number would be requisite in order to complete the transaction. That is akin to bait and switch. Again, it was an emergency situation or else I would have walked out with such a ridiculous and irresponsible request. I was told that using a regular credit card would have eliminated the need for the social security number. Okay...why was I not told this when I called this location and asked if I could use a debit card? I could have easily brought a credit card with me...that is why I called first...but I wasn't told this until after I had paid my cab driver (who dropped me off) and he left. The only other option Lori offered me was to cancel the reservation. I was f*cked either way. Today, with so many company's computers and information archives being breached by hackers looking to steal people's identities, a social security number should be a closely guarded piece of information. Don't get me wrong, I had no inclination that Lori would steal the number, but once it is entered in the system, it's gone...any hacker can get it. If you know anyone that has had good credit AND has had their identity stolen, you know that it can take years to fully recover from it...and you can forget buying a house or car or even renting an apartment without a cosigner until you clean it up. I also believe that a corporation can have whatever policies they want, but they should be up front about it when someone asks a direct question. I was considering opening up a corporate account with this Avis location, but thought better of it after this occurred. They had all the right stuff for which I was looking in a business partnership, but I just can't give business to a company whose corporate policies are so irresponsible. Thus, I've given thousands of dollars of car rental business to other rental car agencies over the last three months. For these reasons I cannot recommend Avis for car rentals. read more

We rented a red SmartCar for our wedding, as our getaway car (we're so Berkeley). The process leading to the wedding was painless - we researched, found a car online, requested that it be at the Berkeley location. My husband reconfirmed on the phone that we would be picking up the car at the Berkeley store, and was given a price. When we came to pick up the car, we saw it in the parking lot as we drove in! Yay! We went inside and talked to the lady at the counter, who was rude enough to make me dock 2 stars. We told her we were picking up the red SmartCar, and she said "oh, it's only REQUEST, not a reservation." We repeatedly told her that we had confirmed our reservation multiple times, but she kept insisting that it was just a request, and that we were sooo lucky that they had the car for us, next time we should blah blah blah. Except that she was totally, 100% wrong - but still kept trying to get the final word. It was our wedding and, by that point in time, we were done with stress and picking arguments. We let it slide, let her assert her self-righteousnesses, paid for our car, and got out of there. So...Avis is great. We had zero problems with our car rental. And hopefully they've gotten rid of that awful lady by now. read more

I have rented cars here 3-4 times over the summer and every experience I have had has been positive. I have made the reservations on the net for both Avis and Budget - the rates are the same - and each time I have picked up a car, the process has been incredibly speedy and efficient. I have often had the same counter agent, who is a very friendly woman who takes care of business. No extraneous stuff- just gets you in and out of there. Likewise when I have returned the cars, I have not had any problems which were not resolved expediently. When I recently had a fast track problem ( fast trak box opened even though I had not agreed to the per day fee) , the agent promptly issued a credit for the per day charges. another time, she waived the change reservation charge when I had to add an extra day to my reservation. I have liked the cars I have had - all clean and well -running. Because I can walk to this location, I have not shopped around too much for price but I find the rates reasonable and the service exceptional. My only wish is that they were open until 6. read more

Horrible and life threatening. I wish I was exaggerating but no, they lied to us and gave us a front wheel drive car when we explicitly asked for all wheel drive. They even charged us extra and the key even said all wheel drive. We went up into the snowy mountains of Lake Tahoe under the impression that we would be safe, that is until we started to slide down the hills. We couldn't control the car and we could have seriously gotten hurt or hurt someone else. If we had known it was front wheel drive, we would have never tried to go up a hill, which makes their deceit so dangerous. It's just a lawsuit waiting to happen. What's worse is after we called in, we were passed around different departments all telling us it's not their responsibility to get us out, and we were even told that we're on our own unless the car itself was mechanically broken. That's right, they told us we should just be stuck at the bottom of a snowy hill, stranded in a snow storm, blocking roads and being a hazard to other cars. This is after waiting for 3 hours of being transferred from one department to another. After 6 ridiculous hours of waiting, we were finally towed to safety, and we don't even know if Budget is going to charge us a fortune for the towing, which we only needed due to their horrendous mistake. read more

If I could give this rental site a zero, I would. I feel so strongly about this site that this is my first time EVER writing a Yelp review. I booked this car through IBM, which allows for under 25 drivers. However, upon coming there, the employee threatened me and said it was only by his grace, that he was ALLOWING me, a PAYING CUSTOMER, to rent the car. Then, upon declining insurance protection, he told me he wouldn't rent me the car unless I opted into the insurance. He said that since he was so graciously allowing me to rent the car, I absolutely HAD to purchase the insurance for an extra $30+ PER DAY. After arguing with the employee, we finally gave into his demands after it was clear he was not budging. We were so shaken by the interaction that the other members of my party started CRYING. To make matters worse, upon returning the car with a tank half full, as was it was when we rented the car, we were told the tank was full because "the computer said so," even though we had a photo documenting the tank only be half full upon it being rented to us. The employee said that unless I fill the tank up, which I did at the cost of $40, that he would charge me $10 a gallon. This was THE WORST retail experience I have had in MY ENTIRE LIFE. My family has used Avis for DECADES, but after telling my family about this scarring experience, we will be taking our business elsewhere. DO NOT GO RENT WITH THIS LOCATION-- ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE YOUNGER. They will threaten you, humiliate you, and treat you like sh*t. There's a woman who works here who really knows her stuff. I forgot her name but she's expedient and decisive but not rude. She doesn't give you lines of BS. The condensed story was that I had basically had the worst morning ever and was stuck in Berkeley and needed to be in Sacramento with 2-3 hours. (The public transportation on which I relied was sadly no longer an option.) I ended up in Avis because they accept debit cards. Laurie began setting up my rental and low and behold my card did not work. (I have a 730 credit score and money in the bank but that was just the way my day was going. When it rains it pours.) My bf in SF gladly wanted to pay but no phone orders could be accepted without his driver's license (drum roll please) which he does not have but only a state ID. Needless to say, my options were slim. However, when I asked her questions about transportation options and she gladly offered a car service for a very reasonable price and set it up for me. Laurie was very nice about me waiting in the Avis waiting area until the bf with the cash and the driver arrived. I was pretty nervous and annoying I am sure but she was very kind about the whole ordeal. I love my local Avis!!!! Super fast service, very friendly, great cars, perfect. So much better than other nearby rental agencies. I'm a monthly renter, and I looooove these guys! Avis has me in and out in less than 10 minutes, car guaranteed. It's *worth* the extra few dollars that it costs to rent from here than from the other companies because they GUARANTEE you a car when you make the reservation (unlike a certain other company on Oxford that just takes reservations no matter what) -- and they really do have you in and out in a jiffy. Plus this particular Avis site has a special frequent renter program (search for "Avis RentSavers"), so if you rent from them a certain number of times, you get a coupon for a free rental day. Nice car selection. I got a new car (Chevy Malibu, free upgrade) with only 4000 miles on it. Service was fine--nothing unexpected of a car rental agency. One bad thing was that the Sirius radio subscription ran out halfway throughout my rental, which made the long road trip even longer, but I guess the Sirius radio was an added bonus anyway. This place was less busy than the Enterprise on Oxford St, so it was less hectic and less stressful to get a car on time. It turned out that I was unable to complete my reservation today because of credit issues that were out of her hands and mine, but she did her best to offer me options and help me find a solution. When we determined that there was nothing more that she could do, she contacted the corporate office and made sure I was given a full refund. My dad had a heart attack and was kept in the hospital longer than anticipated. When I asked to extend the car rental so I could pick him up, the operator Amin refused to waive the extension fee. He said "Everyone has a heart attack, this is a business." When I said it's not in his business interest to treat customers this way, and he said "That's the kind of person I am." DO NOT rent a car here if you want to be treated like a human being. read more
