When I arrived, my card was declined for the minivan I wanted. The first agent--a guy--simply said "you can't use two credit cards" and walked away--he didn't offer a single alternative or solution despite knowing I urgently needed a car for my Joshua Tree trip. So, I had to find my own solution. I located a cheaper full-size Jeep Wrangler and went back to the counter with a new reservation. This is where the real problem started. Agent Kayla never properly processed my new Jeep reservation. She continued processing the minivan instead, which is why my card kept being declined. When I checked my card balance, I had more than enough money for the Jeep rental. I went back to her and showed her--my card clearly had sufficient funds. She then asked, "Did you have another reservation?" I said yes, under my husband's name, but I told her **multiple times** that my new reservation was for the **Jeep, not the minivan**. She wasn't paying attention. She never switched the reservation in the system. This wasn't a card issue--it was her failure to properly process my booking. We spent nearly 2 hours troubleshooting a problem that shouldn't have existed if she had simply listened and done her job correctly. She was dismissive, abrupt, and never once apologized for wasting our time. **Why this was so frustrating: ** Alamo's policy requires one card for the rental + $400 deposit hold. I understand the reason--they need to secure the deposit. But here's what made it inexcusable: I had a Capital One debit card with $5,000 available. Both agents rejected it outright without explanation. **Alamo's own policy says debit cards ARE accepted at airport locations** if you provide your return flight itinerary--but neither agent explained this nor asked if I had my flight confirmation. They just said "no" and refused to help problem-solve. Money is money. $5,000 is more than enough to cover a rental and deposit. Their inflexibility was unnecessary and unhelpful. **The core issues: ** - First agent refused to help find alternatives - Both agents rejected available debit card funds without explaining actual policy - Kayla failed to properly process the Jeep reservation despite being told multiple times - Poor attention to detail and lack of basic listening skills - Unprofessional, dismissive attitudes from both staff members - Nearly 2 hours wasted with my two younger children, arriving home to Bay Point at almost 2 AM If you work in customer service, you have one job: listen to customers and help them. When did Alamo start having plainclothes ICE agents? The lady at the front desk was definitely a racist. She checked my passport--which I have never experienced at other Alamo or Enterprise locations--and claimed that my passport was expired. I told her that my passport doesn't expire for another eight years. Then she said my visa was expired. I told her at least three times that she might not be looking at the correct page and that I could help her find it, but she completely ignored me. After a while, she finally handed my passport back to me and told me to look for it myself. I found the correct page and showed it to her. She impatiently said, "You have too many visas." Later, because I didn't have a flight number, she kept delaying and refusing to rent me a car, even though I had just returned a car to Alamo at OAK without the flight number and showed her the receipt. Her colleague said, "Some international visitors steal cars or damage them, so we introduced this policy in the Bay Area in the past one or two weeks." I asked him to provide written documentation, but he refused, saying: 1. This is an internal document and cannot be shown to customers. 2. This is a Bay Area-only rule, and you won't find it on the official website. If this rule truly exists, why doesn't it appear in the terms and conditions during online reservation? That way, customers wouldn't waste their time coming here for nothing. As for the prejudice against international visitors, I don't believe international customers can take a car onto a plane and fly it back to our home countries. We rented a small crossover for almost 2 weeks in CA and we were hoping for a Toyota or Honda, but all they had were Hyundais and Mitsubishi's. At least our plain underpowered Hyundai Venue got good gas mileage (not a car I would ever buy after this). It basically did the job, but when I returned the vehicle, I was handed a receipt which I noticed was for almost $60. I was told I agreed to a full tank of gas at $4.99 a gallon. However, I had completely filled the tank up 40 miles prior so I asked if that charge could be removed. I was assured I would be getting an email shortly or a text. They did email me a copy of the bill, but no refund. After I noticed the charge had not been removed for two days. I called Alamo and talked to an operator and they assured me it would be removed. Four days later and the charge is still there so I called again and was once again assured the charge would be removed and two days later it was. Keep in mind that both Alamo, National and other similar car rental agencies give you the option to return the car with a full tank or they will take care of it at two different price ranges. The best option is to return the car with a full tank of gas and make sure you state that during your time at the rental counter or you'll be dealing with this same scenario. I would rent from Alamo again, but I'd get this detail correct in future. read more

You do have to take a shuttle from the airport to the car rental place, but once you are there, the process is quick and easy. They gave us a 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross compact suv that connected to Apple CarPlay with ease and we were on our way. We originally booked the car and intended to return it back to Oakland, but we had an emergency situation during our trip and Alamo accommodated our request with no hassle or complications. They allowed us to drive the car all the way down to the John Wayne Airport located in Orange County (Southern California) and drop it off there. We did late drop off which was super easy - we followed the signs and left the car in the Return lane and dropped off the keys in the Alamo Key Drop Box. The hardest part was finding a phone number to call (since it was after hours) to see if they would allow us to drop off the car at John Wayne Airport. I found a number on the contract envelope they gave us when we picked up the vehicle and someone answered the call and made the change within minutes. This is my second time using Alamo in Oakland and both times have been great. From Oakland International Airport, you have to catch a shuttle to get to the rental car center. Pro tip: When you catch the shuttle, make sure you are ready to jump off and go to your respective rental counter so you can be in and out quick. Alamo, National and Enterprise have their own counters, but here, the agents work all three companies. This made for slow service. I would say that was the only hiccup I have encountered here. When I did make it to the counter, Justin was such a pleasure to deal with. He had great customer service skills and gave us great tips on the area. They do go through their usual line of questions about upgrades. I usually go for bigger vehicles cause I'm a big guy, but I knew the parking situation in the streets and garages in San Fran is tricky. When I went outside to get my full size car, the guy looked at me, then looked at the car and was like nah man, you can have the van or SUV at no extra charge. We had a good laugh and I happily decided to go with the bigger vehicle. It was a almost brand new Pacifica that was not a basic model. I don't have any small kids or a need for a mini van, but this was clean and a smooth ride. The drop off process was quick and easy as well. The young lady checking us in was nice and pleasant and made sure we checked every nook and cranny of the vehicle so we did not leave anything behind. More times than not, rental car companies are not good or just barely decent as far as cleanliness and customer service goes. Alamo is Oakland proved me wrong in both categories. I would not recommend Alamo at all, and I will NEVER use Alamo again after our experience this past weekend. Our flight was cancelled on Friday due to the government shutdown, forcing us to reschedule with a later flight that included a layover in Dallas--which was also delayed. Knowing we'd be arriving late, I called the Alamo Oakland Airport location using the number on our reservation to make sure we could still pick up our car. I was reassured by an Alamo employee that someone would wait for us, that they had our updated flight information, and that everything was taken care of. You can imagine our frustration when we arrived at 2 a.m. to find the rental counters completely closed and no one in sight. A security guard informed us that the staff had left hours earlier and that "they lied" about waiting for us and told us this happens all the time. As a result, we had to spend $117 on an Uber to our hotel--an hour away--and rent a car from another company the next morning, since there was no nearby Alamo location. I called the next day to explain what happened and was told a manager would reach out. Two days later, I still hadn't heard back. I called again this morning and am still waiting for a response. We were outright lied to. I would have preferred if Alamo had simply told me they could not wait so I could make other arrangements. To make matters worse, I later found out that other parents from my daughter's team used a different rental company that left their keys in the cars for late arrivals--no issues at all. I will be using that company from now on, and I will never use or recommend Alamo again. Update: In response to Michelle at Alamo's comment below. That is a generic link to the website that I went to several times and did not get a resolution. The manager from the Oakland location did call me yesterday afternoon and at first said I would get refunded half, but then said she would refund the entire amount we were charged for the car we were never able to rent. She said she could do nothing about the $117 Uber Charge, except provide me a free upgrade the next time I used Alamo. Honestly, I always book whatever car is the cheapest. I barely ever look at what company I'm renting from which makes for a fun surprise. This was the first time I rented from Alamo. The process was really quick and I was able to get into my car no problem. The only bummer was that the car had a screen, but it didn't have a car play option so I wasn't able to see my directions on it. Alamo at the Rental Car Center at Oakland International Airport came through for us in a pinch, hence my four-star rating (good). On a Thursday evening, we needed to book a car pronto for the weekend (Friday-Sunday). We just needed a simple sedan. This Alamo at the airport was able to get us in a Toyota Corolla overnight. Since we were already in the city, we first checked in-person with Budget on Webster St and Enterprise on Broadway. All Budget had for us was a pickup truck and Enterprise was completely booked, no cars available. I'll use this review as an opportunity to note that the lady at Budget was rude and brusk while the guy at Enterprise was kind and polite. All Alamo staff we interacted with were fine. We booked our rental with Alamo through our Costco membership. The "2 Day - Alamo - Intermediate Car" rental cost $453.65 total. That consisted of a Base Car Rental of $350.26 and Taxes and Fees of $103.39. Expensive, but considering the tight turnaround, we were OK with it and happy to have a car. The car didn't have navigation, which was fine. I prefer to use Waze on my phone. I did connect my phone to the car via Bluetooth to get voice navigation through the car speakers. Our pick-up point was the Rental Car Center next to the Oakland airport. If you're at the airport, you have to hop on a shuttle to get to the Rental Car Center. It's a sizable facility that serves as the pickup point for several rental car brands such as Avis, Dollar, Enterprise, and National. There are different counters and lines for each rental car company. Make sure you get in the right one because we saw several folks in the wrong line, only to get turned away at the counter and directed to enter a different line. Our drop-off point was different: San Jose International Airport. Both our pick-up and drop-off were quick and efficient. We beat a couple shuttles that arrived to the Rental Car Center in Oakland, so our wait there wasn't too bad. The entire process was smooth. We purchased insurance at the counter for peace of mind. I don't recall the additional cost, but it wasn't exorbitant. The physical picking up and dropping off of the car at both airports was lightning fast. Basically, as fast as we could load/unload our luggage and for me to get the driver's seat and mirrors the way I wanted them. The employees at both locations seemed experienced, like they had done the same thing - getting people into and out of rentals - a million times. I'd book with this Alamo again. One tip I have is if you have a Costco membership, it's a great way to book a rental car and save some money. read more

Alamo is getting ridiculous , I book a car for my wife. That part went well, alamo send an email to accelerate check-in and skip the line, so I did. Went to parking lot and pick up car and check out. So far so good. Now the problem, I return the car and alamo tack on over $400 to my bill. Now I'm going to tell you why but I suggest you sit down first. Alamo said the $400.00 was because I pick up car 7 minutes early. I'm floored, in shock, disbelief, paralyzed with disgust. Let's put this together, I book a flight, pick up luggage, catch a shuttle bus over to alamo rental. Walk to parking lot to pick up suv. It chirstmas week, had a fabulous time with grandkids and family. Return car a little early and get a $900+ bill when the contract states bill for $509. The ding me for picking up vehicle 7 minutes early can you believe that. The gentleman who check me in we very professional and corrected the issue and gave me a $50 credit. I did mention to him that I noticed alamo didn't reduce my bill for bringing suv in early. I always thought there was a window before the time to pick it up and, after the return time. According to alamo 7 minutes is out of that range. The only thing that I can come up with is alamo is a gouging outfit. Customer's should not have to spend 20-30 minutes for this type of foolishness. So we are on vacation in Oakland ca. we rented a van from Alamo due To having 6 people. One being a 3 year old in a car seat. The van was broken into and all our valuables were taken including our passporta. We were told we could exchange the van for another van at the Oakland airport.we We arrived at the Oakland airport there were no vans available. The gave us a smaller vehicle and told us we could exchange it for a van at the San Francisco airport which is where we originally rented it. But we are still waiting to hear from Alamo to see if there is a van available. This ordeal has been very upsetting and we just keep getting the run around. Third party companies that do not have correct information are who we have to deal with. No stars for Alamo on this transaction. We were literally told the the Oakland airport that there customers come first that we needed to go to San Francisco to get priority service. For our recent trip to Oakland we rented from Alamo rental car through Costco Travel. Smooth process at the rental desk and we're upgraded from a small SUV to a full size SUV (Nissan Murano instead of the Nissan Rogue). Gas mileage was surprisingly good with 600+ miles for the tank. We drove to Sonoma and Napa and back and only used half a tank of 87 octane gas. With the way gas prices are now ($5.70+ a gallon) this was a nice savings. The return process was smooth with just a scan of the bar code on the windshield and an email with all charges. Note: due to the Free Upgrade, taxes on the actual vehicle we rented were slightly higher. Yes, we would rent from Alamo rental car again in the future. read more

Set up a last minute rental and the transaction couldn't have gone any more smoothly. This was my BEST car rental experience EVER! I fast tracked it by creating an online account and filling in all my info, such as DL, etc. Upon arrival there were 3 agents from other well known competitors assisting others. Alamo's registration area was dark and no one was present at 7:15 am which had me worried as my pick up time was reserved for 7 am. One of the other service agents Jorge, beckoned me and told me he could assist. Review of the contract and reservation took less than 10 minutes! My wait time in line was less than 5 minutes. I was in the driver's seat of a freshly clean SUV in less than 20 minutes from the time I stepped foot in the rental center. Alfredo assisted me with my car selection and made sure it met my needs. He gave me a quick overview of the car too. He was so courteous and helpful and wouldn't leave until I was satisfied. I'll definitely use Alamo for any of my future rentals/read trips. Great service and expeditious too. Rates were extremely fair for a premium car that seats 8. P.S. The return process was just as easy. Filled up the tank and I was out in 2 minutes! read more

The customer service and efficiency at Alamo is really a time saver. Rented an SUV for my wedding weekend as an easy way to haul things and people. Reserving the car online was simple. I went through Expedia and easily checked in with my ID and cc. When I first walked up to the counter I was promptly greeted by Shenek who found my reservation with ease. Unfortunately I forgot my ID and had to wait for my partner to bring it to me. After about 40 minutes I went back to the counter and was greeted by Tasha, Shenek had already informed her that I was waiting to pick-up, so when I came to the counter, Tasha has my reservation up and ready. From there it was quick and painless to complete the pick-up process. It took less than 5 minutes to get going and while all the upgrade/upscale options were provided, neither person pushed or lied to make a sale. This is probably why I opted for the pre-paid fill-up. It was presented as a convenience rather than a necessity. The car was worked great for our purposes and was clean! Didn't even smell like smoke! When I dropped off the car, I was assisted by Tierra E., who was friendly and efficient. I was able to return the car, give feedback and receive my email receipt all before leaving the lot. It was also a very quick process. All in all I think I spent 10 min. total for pick-up and drop-off. Which was great given the car rental lot was busy both times. One of the better place and I have been going here for years when I visit. I highly recommend going on the Costco travel to book a car here for a great price! No upfront cost or hidden fees and I would come here to pay when I finally come and visit. Good selections of cars and sometimes you get a free upgrade if you ask. This location is location a shuttle away from the airport so it's a 10 minute shuttle drive. They come pretty frequently so you won't miss your flight. They do try to fill the shuttle when it's busier times so keep that in mind. read more

A very frustrating experience. I rented a car within a 24 hour time period for my 29th anniversary. Got a confirmation and showed up at the counter to get the car. Only to be told by the staff that they had no car for me because I scheduled within 24 hours but they had cars for people who had made a reservation a week prior. When I asked why this was not on their website or how I was still able to make a reservation. He stated this is their policy. I asked to speak to a manager. As he stated if she said it was okay, that would be the only way to get the reservation. There were no attempts to support me at all...no calling one of their other sites to verify stock. When I asked the manager for the corporate office number she told me I could look it up with Google. This is too unprofessional and lacking of customer service. A customer is standing at your counter and you can even support them with a basic request. When I asked for her name she walked off. I had to ask her a total of three times before she told me from afar. I have been renting cars for years and this by far is my worst experience. I wish I could give it a 0 but by luck the lowest I could give this review is a 1. I am not rating this low out spite but I truly believe they need to do better. Maybe even contacting potential customers to let them know their car stock is low to allow the customer time to brainstorm options early and not be stranded and disappointed. read more

OMG! I can't thank them enough. I chose Alamo because they had better reviews on yelp than the other places at the Oakland airport. I was flying alone and renting a car without my husband. The customer service was exceptional. Mary at the desk was very helpful. Even telling me where to get gas on the way back in a safe neighborhood. And since those gas stations were out of my way, she suggested that I gas up where I was staying and just pay for a gallon of gas when I turned the car in. And Drew who helped outside in the parking lot went way above and beyond. 1) he walked me to the car and put my suitcase in the trunk (And btw- they actually had the specific car I requested and the car was clean and spotless ... meaning no dents or dings at all! When we rent cars, I'm usually taking pictures of all the little bit of damage to make sure we don't have to pay for them when we turn it in. Nothing to take pictures of here.) 2) when I realized my phone charger wouldn't work in this car Drew went inside and got me a complementary adapter so I could use my charger to charge my phone and he showed me how to sync it up with the car's Bluetooth so I could use my Apple CarPlay with google map/directions. 3) when I had to turn around and come back because the car kept beeping he figured out I had accidentally popped the hood (while trying to lower the steering wheel). 4) when I asked why everyone kept telling me to be careful of break-ins, he explained that the area around the airport is extremely dangerous and cars get broken into when people stop to gas them up before returning them. He also suggested safe places to gas up. And even though I felt embarrassed every time I had to ask for more help, everyone was very patient, kind and helpful. Even the guy who checked me out at the exit. And I used my Costco membership to rent the car so I got a really good price. Highly recommend Alamo at the oakland airport! Ask for Drew! read more

Booked a reservation at another place but read the bad reviews so decided to try Alamo at Oakland airport. I was greeted with a warm welcome and was helped through the process smoothly. Charlene at the front desk was a charm . She offered everything from insurance to all the upgrades needed for a perfectly effective trip. The worst customer service; zero compassion, communication or care... due to a new rule the corporation 'hoisted' (night manager's description) upon them working at Alamo; note that this manager, Josh, framed it as though he was the one suffering from this incompetence and not myself, with it being past midnight and told I had ten minutes to find a solution for a new policy Alamo corporate had instigated only two weeks ago, and had yet to advertise or communicate it at any step in the rental process and instead surprise folks with it as they are literally about to drive off the lot. Yes, Josh, you were definitely the one in hardship here. And your cheery disposition and lack of any sort of communication or problem solving intent to actually help your customer certainly made it clear how much you were suffering. Nah, no suffering. It was clear the only thing you cared about are these insensible surprise rules that make it challenging and stressful for good, hardworking folks to use the service that you represent and pays your bills. Absolutely ZERO customer care or service, when the ball was clearly and admittedly dropped on Alamo's end and even the management staff admitted to it. read more

Great experience. Renting a car isn't usually a smooth process and there's usually extra/hidden fees. This was one of the easiest experiences I've had and when we dropped off the car, we received excellent customer service from Jay. He made sure we were happy with our experience and that there were no extra fees we were hit or surprised with. Can't recommend enough. read more

First time renting from Alamo, very positive experience. Did a reservation beforehand and pricing was as booked. Amazing staff, very friendly and professional. Saying this from experience lol Especially the agent who helped me pick out my car and Monica at car return, both were super helpful and efficient at their jobs. I wasn't picky with my car and chose an economical choice with the KIA Optima, gotta say KIA really upped their game and driving was very comfortable and intuitive. I highly recommend renting through Alamo at the Oakland Airport. We rented a car that had issues once we got to our location and Alamo was quick to get us to a safe location and switch out our car. Unfortunately the second car had issues as well so we had to do one more car switch. Obviously this had taken a big chunk of time out of one of our vacation days so when our trip was over we got back to the OAK airport to return the car and we were so grateful to have been welcomed by Adrian (Manager). He took the time to listen to our experience and worked with us to provide a benefit to compensate for our missed day and transportation issues. read more

Wasted my time. Didn't tell me on the website that I had to be 25 to rent a van. If 24 is too young, then why not tell me that before I pay? Why allow me to book the rental just so that I can be denied after driving to the place? read more

The staff was very professional and friendly. They took care of me. My problem Is the roadside assistance. I had an issue in downtown Oakland and needed a tow. They told me it would be 60 minutes. After 2 1/2 hours and two different towing companies I drove the car back to office myself. The roadside assistance with Alamo just sucks. read more

Tasha and Mary have been phenomenal! I have been getting rentals for the last 6 weeks while my Ranger has been in the shop. Hands down the best service in this rental facility has come from the ALAMO STAFF! Thrifty staff were so unprofessional I abandoned my rental and paid more to booked here instead. Jorge (National rep assisting Alamo) at the counter doesn't know how to treat customers and doesn't actually honor company policy. Debit Cards with Visa are allowed to be used at the time of rental with proof of outbound returning flight. I was never asked to show proof of my airline ticket orly turned down. While I was able to use credit card, this employee need training and better customer service. my rental less approximately 7 hours and the person who checked me in recorded the trip mileage instead of the odometer. Alamo-it's not possible for me or anyone to drive thousands of miles in less than 8 hours in the Bay Area. It just doesn't happen. This rating is raised to 2 stars because the concierge who directed me to the cars was excellent-she was pleasant, courteous, and professional to me and another customer. The customer service rep at the counter who changed my billing at the end of rental (return) gets the other star. read more
