We got an older Ford Explorer with a noticeable hesitation problem, windows and mirrors that were hard to see out of when it rained, dirty glass and old wipers on front and back, a smell in the SUV, a key fob that was broken, and no power seats. Their check in and out was good, but they asked the same information that I already entered in their database. They need to have no check-in, just grab the car and go. read more

I had a reservation July 4th the lady working the counter alone was amazing! She had a huge line and worked through it quickly and provided great service. She assisted me with my reservation and despite my own ignorance on booking she found an affordable solution that the entire family was pleased with. I paid for the car and was in the vehicle quickly. I hear so many horror stories but my experience was nothing but pleasant. Thank you Avis! read more

Do NOT get a car from Avis. They will not reserve. I prepaid $811 for 6 days. Reserved a large car and upon arrival there was no large car and we had to wait in line at the parking lot. Normally, avis allows preferred customers to go directly to their vehicle. Not in San Juan. They claimed we would get a refund for the difference in smaller vehicle but we did not. Called customer service only to be rerouted over and over again. After several hours on hold, nothing has been resolved 4 weeks on. Reported them to BBB as I was hung up on (and I was polite). It took an hour from when I got in line at Avis customer desk to when I go in my rental. Very limited instructions, first time Avis renter and renting at SJU. All I was told the car was at section A and that I was getting a dark grey Cherokee, while doing the rental agreement I declined all the extras, one being a fuel charge that I could return the car as is and they (Avis) would take care of it, again I declined and even said, "I'll put the gas in the car for that price". Around twenty people walking and standing around trying to figure out which and where their rental was. Two other people were even issued the same car also a dark gray Cherokee, so they had to figure it out with no attendant in sight. When my car arrived it was dripping from being rinsed out and not washed. Due to this I couldn't even tell if the car was damaged. The interior was not well vacuumed, I found candy at the edge of the passenger seat track/console area. Most of the plastic pieces were noticeably dirty and there was sand and dirt in the trunk area. When I got to the gate to leave the parking garage I asked the attendant to please help me because I knew the key was in the car and I could not find it, he was rude and asked me to back up, pull to the side and look for them and that I was holding up his line. Got in the car at night time and as soon as I hit the road, the rear view mirror was dirty, smudged and I was forced to try to wipe it to use while trying to drive in an unfamiliar area. Upon returning the SUV, the signs were clear on were to park, but no instructions on what to do or where to leave paperwork and keys. I walked to the nearest attendant and asked him what the process was and he was rude pointed at the cars and said leave the paperwork and keys on the seat, he looked as me as if I was interrupting him and he was just standing there. I fueled the car to the top, when I picked it up the gas was one notch below full, showed the rude attendant prior to leaving the parking lot when I picked up the car. And I was just charged $107.04 for fuel. Called a day later and explained about the extra charge, took ten minutes but the gentleman on the line from Avis Customer Service was able to see that the car was returned with a full tank and removed the overage charge. The Only reason I am giving a 2 star instead of 1 is the car worked as needed without any issues. P.S. I came to see my dying Mother at the hospital and almost missed seeing her because of how long it took me to get the rental. read more

I have been renting cars for over 30 years and this was by far the Worst experience I have had. The only car rental with a long line at the San Juan airport was Avis. It took me over an hour to get through the line and then we waited in the lot for more than an hour waiting for the car to arrive. They assign everyone a specific car, not what is available. The Avis workers in the lot kept telling us "your car is being washed". Didn't realize it takes over an hour to wash a car. Avis used to be known for quality service. They have obviously decided to change course and become a low budget, terrible service car rental. I'm done with Avis and I advise nobody to rent from them - at least not at the San Juan Puerto Rico airport. read more

The fob was not working when I would press the button to open the door, and there was no key entry. The button worked intermittently initially and then worked less and less until it stopped working all together. I called and was told someone would bring a replacement within an hour and a half. After an hour, I was called and told by the person on the phone that their supervisor had denied the delivery. I was told that I had to drive 45 minutes back to the airport to get a replacement. My time in PR was very limited, and I wasn't going be able to do that. I was forced to leave the car unlocked the entire time. The fob is the responsibility of the company. Why should I have to drive 90 min round trip for something that was no fault of mine!? Poor management for initially agreeing to bring a replacement and not following through, making me wait an hour before chaging their minds about bringing a replacement, and for poorly maintaining their equipment. I'll go to a budget car rental company next time and get the same service. read more

I travel to Puerto Rico frequently to visit family. I always come to this car rental and it's always a hit or miss. Today I walked in to a line throughout the door. Which is common for this car rental. I always wonder why they never have enough employees. There is always just two people for a line of at least 25 waiting. The only way I'd consider coming back is because of one employee who moves the lines quickly and has great customer service. He is bald with big glasses- nicest guy ever who deserves a raise based on how he just handles pressure. The lot workers were also great. Avis/ Budget- you need to do better. One or two people is not enough for the volume of cars you rent out. read more

Got to the San Juan Avis around 3:10 and didn't get to the front desk at 5:18. Process was smooth but you still need to wait for your vehicle at the pick up area. It is already 6:50 at this point and our checkin at the hotel was hours ago. Lady at the front desk said they are washing our car and you just need to wait for them to bring it up. I don't think the car was even returned yet when she said they are washing and cleaning it up. I knew I should've canceled the rental from Avis and went through with my trusted Enterprise. read more

Arrived at Luis Munoz Marin (San Juan) International Airport. The paperwork process was fast and straight to the point. However, after making your way out of the airport and across the street to the car rental location we waited, so far, about 20 minutes. There was only one family in front of us and at least three employees working, not sure what they're doing but it doesn't seem like they're working. I'm literally at the AVIS car rental as I write this review. So far, rental service isn't worth the price I paid. I paid over $350 to wait and not be attended properly. The staff informed us they are cleaning the car for 2 hours (was only told when we went up to a staff member. After two hours they informed us the registration for the car was missing. Terrible experience with Avis San Juan. Front desk personnel was unprofessional and rude . He was unknowledgeable and unwilling to make a simple reservation flow smoothly. Customer service there is subpar- even when a manager was called up to the front desk for further assistance and rectification all he did was back his associate up and supported bad behavior and unprofessionalsim. I was dreading this whole process because I have read many of the negative reviews of this place. For starters, I booked a full size sedan, only to be told that they no longer have any full size sedans but they can put me in an economy car for a big discount. I was given the option, since I was driving across the island, to go to their other larger location to swap out for the vehicle I wanted. I wasn't too upset about this since I was given a roomy economy car but it didn't end here. The biggest issue is the lack of maintenance to this car, it had 1 tire with a slow leak and another tire that was completely bald. Completely unacceptable for a car to be given to someone in this state. To top it off I found a cockroach one evening in the car which I managed to kill. read more

The WORST rental car place ever. They have caused me so much stress on my first day. Gave me a car with tires with no thread/ no grip, nail in time and horrible wind shield wipers. I have made of 20 phone calls and no one answers the phone. The reservation line told me they can't book another car bc in system says sold out. PR hotline told me there's always cars available they will have when u go. Asked to speak to a manager, he said they don't have that option. Wtf ?? I just picked up my car, was told I needed to bring a gas receipt with me as proof of refill, thought weird but okay whatever, then when I get the car to think the Fuel gauge looks less than full, but not sure so I stop at the gas station within 10 minutes from leaving the airport and fill over 8 liters(over 2 gallons) into the tank... if they are going to require renters to provide proof of refill then they should at least provide a full tank upon rental. read more

The worst Avis location I have ever rented from, and I've rented from quite a few. Not only did they completely mess up my rental and didn't give me the Jeep Wrangler that was ordered, but did not remedy it in any way. It actually reminded me of a Seinfeld episode, they "know how to take a reservation, just don't know how to HOLD a reservation." They lied to my face saying there is no convertibles available when I walked out and saw convertible mustangs and camaros with a rent me sign on top of them. I was there at 10:15 for a 10:30 rental and had to wait the 15 minutes before I could check in, and then waited another hour to get the car.
