Horrific customer service, good price using AARP card so that justifies the mandatory 1-star on Yelp. Nobody in line when we picked up the car (that might be a sign!) and the guy at the counter was super friendly until we declined any upgrades... then all the small talk stopped and he isn't able to reach anyone in the garage to tell us our car was ready. After 10 minutes he called another person and they said the car was ready... he wasn't apologetic and his personality disappeared, it was weird. THEN, we get the car and it was not clean inside or outside. It looked like it was hosed down but you could still see bug residue on the front side. The inside had dust in the hard to reach areas and a stain on the seat. THEN, we drive up to the exit and the guy doesn't look up until we say something to him. Seriously? He would have kept his head down and we would still be there unless we spoke up!! RUDE!!! No greeting, no anything from him as we finished our checkout. Never again, I'll pay $5 more and go to any of the other numerous rental agencies! read more

Booked a car through Priceline and got so screwed that I will never use either Avis or Priceline again. Price was about double what I was quoted and no customer service reps even tried to help. Garbage garbage garbage. Car smells like a homeless person lived in it and smoked a pack a day, passenger side is all scratched up, tire was low on air, and one of the rear seatbelts is unusable due to the belt guard being broken and hanging freely in the car. read more

The pickup process was fine until they tried to charge me a fee for a car upgrade without letting me know. They almost got it past me, but I read the charges. They didn't have a car in the class that I rented, but then tried to charge me for an upgrade. I declined the upgrade and they removed the charge. The car ran fine. The absolute worst part of this location is that they don't have any overnight drop off options. Their hours are limited. Because this location is in a hotel, they make you drop off the car with the valet who charges $35. This is just to drop the car off outside of their business hours. I asked if there were other options and the representative was less than helpful. There is no notice of this anywhere-not during booking or at the counter. I wish I had read the other reviews before I rented from this location. read more

It's Truly Amazing that I was put on the Do Not Rent list for Avis, Budget and Enterprise Car Rental because the Employee that they hired made a Error on there End. After Swiping my Visa Card. I Called in to Complain about the Situation and of Course the Employee LIED to Cover his Mistake be careful when you are spending your hard earned working money. They don't appreciate your service they talk to you any kind of way as if they are talking to Children. If the customers don't service the different rental companies then how will they have an income to keep there business going. This was my first experience renting a car under my own name--I'd only ever gone with my parents when I was younger to rent cars while we were on vacation. My experience with them were long lines and somewhat unfriendly attendants. This experience, however, was fantastic. I made the reservation online a few days in advance. I scheduled a pick-up at 7:30 a.m. in Virginia and I was in the rental car, a Toyota Corolla, by 7:35. I was shocked by how easy the pick-up was. The car was clean and full of gas. It drove well. When I returned the car the next day in Baltimore, at this location, I received a $2 refund because my reservation had overestimated the actual cost. I think I paid $90 for a day and an hour of driving, as I couldn't return the car until 8:00 a.m. in Baltimore. Had I not needed the extra half-hour, it would have only been something like $50, which was far less than the other companies I looked at. The attendants at the hotel and the Avis representative inside were all very friendly and helpful. Great service, great car, great price. I highly recommend! read more

At the last minute, I needed to rent a car on a Sunday so I booked online, crossed my fingers, and headed down to the Sheraton on Fayette Street, site of this Avis Rent-a-Car. I was pleasantly surprised by the service. It was very quick (quickest rental ever - 5 minutes?) and they bring the car around via valet. Returning the car was just as simple. Just ask the valet where they want the car. I usually rent from the Enterprise near my house but you just can't beat the service here. I would go back here in a heartbeat. The car was a brand new Chevy mid-size. I loved it. Tip: check your credit card. If you have rental car coverage, make sure you decline ALL insurance coverage via Avis. (You don't want the minimum coverage - you want ZERO coverage.) I don't rent that often so I didn't know. read more

DO NOT RENT FROM AVIS! THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE IS AWFUL I rented a car to visit my family over for the holidays. I reserved a car from Avis on 12/3 directly through Avis.com. Specifics of my reservation were: 12pm pick-up 12/24, 12pm drop-off 12/27. I paid in advance and my pickup location was the Baltimore Harbor Hotel. The morning of 12/24, I viewed my confirmation email the morning of 12/24, I confirmed the location hours, Mon-Fri 8am-6pm (as stated on Avis.com). I arrived at the Avis counter at the Baltimore Harbor Hotel at 12:05pm. Despite the confirmation email, the sign on the desk at the Avis location, and the Avis website, all stating Mon-Fri 8am-6pm, the office was CLOSED! Five minutes after closing there were zero employees in sight. I was not the only customer. When I arrived at the pick-up location, at 12:05pm, I immediately noticed a family of 3 already there and dealing with the same situation. The family also had a reservation for 12pm, they too were not notified this Avis location would close at 12pm. The father of this family was already on his cell phone with an Avis customer service representative when I arrived. The father said Avis would be sending a representative there momentarily and to "stay put". We waited. Roughly fifteen minutes passed, no representatives arrived. I called customer service and spoke with a representative then was transferred to a supervisor named Daniel. I will omit the conversation with the first rep as it mirrored the conversation with the supervisor, as well as the cancellation representative as it is irrelevant. Supervisor Daniel told me there was nothing they could do. The office closed at 12pm, because I arrived at 12:05pm they were in no way responsible as the website shows the office hours. I explained to the supervisor, I confirmed their hours earlier that day in the confirmation email and l had no need to go on their website. I would later find out that the 10am-12pm office hours were not listed on the website. I asked Supervisor Daniel, what should I do? What are my options? Would Avis honor my original reservation at the BWI Airport? He said Avis would not honor the original reservation; I would need to enter a new contract. My original reservation was for $106.71, Supervisor Daniel estimated my new contract would be $430. At this point I was disgusted and requested to transfer me to a representative to assist with obtaining a refund. After the call, I informed the family of 3 that no representative was coming out, and recommended they contact Avis once again and request a refund. Supervisor Daniel was clearly lying here or at best fabricating the facts when he stated "website clearly stating the hours" but remember I granted Supervisor Daniel this fact as I hadn't viewed the website that day. Again why would I have? Why would Avis permit a pick-up time for the very minute that they shut-down shop, and five minutes later not a single employee is in sight. Even less than five minutes, because if you recall the family of 3 was already in the lobby. This was my first experience with Avis, and I all to say to other car renters out there is DO NOT RENT FROM AVIS. I am going to go even one step further to acknowledge the assistance and support I received from the representatives of Enterprise, specifically the Baltimore City branch located on Security Blvd. After leaving the Baltimore Harbor Hotel location I contacted my sister while I was waiting on the city bus to ride home to figure out; "What do I do know?" My sister contacted Enterprise, they offered a 3-day rental for $115. I was relieved. However, the acknowledgement doesn't end there. After sharing the afternoon I had, my experience with Avis, Enterprise took it upon themselves to provide me with a 5% discount, as well as upgrade my vehicle two times. First thing was they sent me to go get the car from the basement of the hotel which I felt was very unsafe especially due to the conditions of the spooky garage where the car was kept. Second they didn't inspect the car with me they told me if I noticed anything to pull up to the door and come let them know. Third, the check engine oil light and service due light was on when I got in the car. Fourth the car was terrible on gas probably due to the oil needing to be changed. Fifth, when I returned the car the agent told me the car was suppose to be full and asked me if I wanted to go fill it before returning it. I told him the car was on a little past half when I got it, I also took a picture of it when I first got the car and it reflected that on the receipt the first agent gave me. He said oh ok but the system indicates that it's suppose to be full but since you have your paper work it's all good. Suppose I didn't take a picture or didn't bring the original paperwork back? The would have charged me for gas or I would have had to leave fill the tank and return. How many people have the charged due to their "system being incorrect"? This was one of the worse rental experiences I have ever had especially because of how I felt unsafe going to retrieve the car in the very beginning. Totally unacceptable. read more

Have rented here with Preferred status twice now. First time got a Ford Explorer and this last time it was a Volvo V60 Turbo. Both nice cars; one more fun than the other. I went to rent here, and the employee at the counter told me that the MVA had banned my driver's license number from renting cars at any location. So of course, I started to freak out. However, I talked to two people at the MVA, and they said that my record was "squeaky clean", and that they did not even have the ability to ban people from car rentals. I was able to rent from another company with no problem. Also, the person at the counter didn't believe I was over 25 at first, even though I showed her my license with my birth date on it. I have no idea what happened here, but I can't recommend these guys as they wound up wasting a lot of my time. read more

I have two complaints about this place. The big one, where the hell is it?! You go online, you look at a map and you think you know and then you get there and you look around like "Huh?" We were staying at the hotel across the street and the morning I was to return my car I went on a walk to try and look for any form of signage that said there was an Avis location anywhere around there. Nothing. I wound up convincing myself that it was actually located across the street because that seemed like the only thing that made any sense. That leads me to complaint number two, the non-responsive staff. I called on 3 or 4 occasions on 2 different days to try and ask where the heck they were located and not once did anyone answer. Great, thanks. Real helpful. Finally after looking at maps and the address, i decided it must be in or around the hotel at that location. I pulled up to the valet and asked if there was an Avis around and they told me to just pull ahead and head into the hotel lobby. THANK YOU! Maybe the Avis website should tell you that. Or perhaps they should answer a phone call when you call to ask them that. When we dropped the car off, the woman working the desk seemed pretty disinterested in us and rather dismissive. We got our receipt and that was that. If you are staying at the hotel there or the Lord Baltimore next door, the location is actually pretty handy, just as soon as you figure out where the hell it is. But they need to answer the phone, not be dismissive in person and maybe put something on the website about location in the future. read more

It is impossible to communicate how bad this place is. To tell you of all the details of my interaction with this company and their employees would only make me increasingly angry and then (because you're reading this) make you angry as well. I'll leave one story to sum it up: The "manager" told me that because I am white (she is a very overweight black woman) that I had to go and "fetch" the mileage, paperwork and gas consumption. When I told her I was in a hurry and that typically the rental car company does that, she told me that my credit card would continue to be charged day after day because she was not going to check it in. At this point my anger transformed into humor over the ridiculousness of this person. So I left the car there. And now I'm looking forward to my credit card bill where I'll (hopefully) have an ongoing charge to my credit card from Avis that I can call and dispute. Do yourself a favor: don't rent from here if you have any other option. Your blood pressure (and your credit card company) will thank you. read more

they accepted my license online when i prepaid but in person decided it wasn't acceptable. (i've had it for almost 8 years now). absolutely ridiculous when i rented the car FOR A TRIP and not in any of the phone calls i had with Avis did they say this would be an issue. also, their entrance is closed so you have to go in thru the Holiday Inn & zigzag around their decrepit hallways with dripping black moldy ceiling. the person supposed to be at the counter was no where to be seen for over 20 minutes, even after calling & saying we were waiting. she was rude on top of not doing her job. extremely sketchy vibes for a business & will never ever consider recommending yall to anyone else. even enterprise is better. read more

The worst experience ever. I reserved online and PAID IN FULL. Gets dropped off at location to only be told that there's no cars available. But my pick up time was at 12.. the only cars were uber cars smh. Then caught a lyft to downtown location were I was told again there's no cars. Then tried to send me to BWI where it would be $200 more. The worst company ever. Never never again. The customer service is good the website needs to be updated or something. This is my favourite place to get vehicles from Avis. They don't charge the $20/day "airport fee" that the BWI location tacks on, and their hours are actually fairly convenient for a centre-city location. The owner is friendly and helpful, and her staff is relatively speedy and efficient. I've never had a problem here. read more

Do not rent from this location if you are doing a day rental with return after hours. You will be responsible for paying for Hotel Valet $35 plus tax to park the car for Avis! The valet checks the car in just like you were returning it to Avis but they make sure that you are aware they don't work for Avis. read more

This rental experience was terrible. I arrived with a prepaid reservation 5 min early to my appt time. When I arrived, the attendant said the price increased by $80, he "just wanted to let me know" when I asked why the price increased, he said "I didn't do this", "I don't know" and "you need to call Avis". After that I gave my credit card, license, and reservation #. He struggled with my reservation and tried to pull it up but asked my for a rental agreement #, which I didn't have (and wasn't included in my confirmation e-mail). When I asked what it was, he said that the customers don't have this, the number is generated after the rental was processed. He said he couldn't give me the car because he couldn't get past the screen he was on due to the lack of rental agreement #. He suggested I call Avis. I call Avis, the man on the phone told me everything looked fine with my rental and I asked him to tell the attendant this. I gave the phone to the attendant, they spoke, but there was no resolve since the attendant couldn't figure out the computer. When I asked the Avis representative on the phone what to do next, and that I need the car, he said "try going to another location". I questioned whether or not this was a good idea because how would I know this wouldnt happen again, I dont want to blindly show up to another location if they cannot help me. He said to try, and told me there was another location in Baltimore, and that if that did not work to simply cancel the reservation.I found this suggestion very unhelpful. Reluctantly, yet desperate to pick up the rental I needed, I followed the Avis representative's advice and went to another location. When I got to the Boston St location, I explained my situation to the attendant. He said "that's my store, that impossible, that would never happen". I felt very frustrated, at this point 1.5 hrs have gone by and I took $17 uber to this new location. The attendant said "Do you see any cars? I don't have any cars" So, sitting in the lobby of the Boston St. Avis I call Avis again, he said that he could transfer my reservation to this new location but it would be over $300 to switch locations. Also, even though the attendant stated he "had no cars" he interrupted me while I was on the phone and said he had a Suburu for me and I could drive it to the Fayette St. location and swap them out. I was willing to do this because I really needed the car, but then when I was told that changing the location of the pick up would be close to $300 I could not bear it any longer. I will never go to an Avis again and I will let my friends and family know about my experience. I should hope that no one would go through this scenario like I had to. Lastly, when I cancelled my reservation online, I never got refunded and had to dispute this with my credit card company. I went to Enterprise on Eastern Ave. later that day and had a pleasant experience. read more

This Avis desk is located inside the Radisson Hotel. The manager was not friendly. We had ordered a midsize and were given a compact. When we questioned him he said that a Corolla was considered a midsize car by Avis. The Corolla we were given had very stained upholstery and had obviously not been cleaned. We requested a different car and this car arrived with a dirty, non-vacuumed interior & trunk and had food and drink debris in the front and side wells. After we complained again, the car's interior was cleaned, except for gross sticky stains on the interior carpet and trunk carpet. At no point did we receive an apology from the manager, although the outside assistant was more conciliatory. We were delayed on the start of our trip by an hour trying to get this settled. Overall, not a good experience. read more

The rental agent left at 1:00pm and the car was returned at 2:00pm. They charged me through the entire weekend. I contacted customer service and the basically told me to pound sand. As someone who has rented cars from many of Baltimore's rental car providers, Avis is middle-of-the road at best, and my particular experience was horrible. Its prices are competitive, though Enterprise has nicer vehicles (Indeed, if you can get out to BWI to rent a car, you can save money and get a nicer car). The staff here were nice enough when I picked up the car, but certainly nothing special. Fast forward to returning the car. I fill up in Columbia to make sure I have more than 3/4 of a tank when I return to avoid a fee. I get back, am greeted by an attendant at the taxi stand who looks at the car (still registering "Full" on the gas meter) and confirms everything looks okay. I go inside to ask for a receipt. They can't give me one (printer out of paper), but I am assured that I will only be charged the price on the contract. I leave content. Fast forward again one week. I see on my credit card that I had been charged an additional $52 for the rental. I call and ask why, and they inform me that I "returned the car on empty" and the fee was for "refilling the gas." I explain that (1) I had returned the car at full, (2) that the attendant had confirmed that for me, and (3) my credit card statement reflects that I filled the tank in Columbia less than an hour before returning the car. They refuse to rebate the $52 fee because I didn't have a physical receipt from the gas station indicating the time and amount of fuel added. This effectively doubled the cost of my one-day rental with absolutely no recourse possible. tl;dr I returned a car full of gas, was charged $52 to "fill the tank," and they would not refund that $52. I will never rent from this particular Avis again. It's ONLY redeeming quality is location, but customer service is horrible. read more

Better than a airport location as this is a desk at a hotel. Just be sure for pick up you have lots of time I have waited up to a hour multiple times for them to bring your car around. Staff is friendly but only have two people working one at the desk and running cars. read more

I love this Avis !! The staff is super friendly and accomodating and they work so hard to please their customers. I have never been to a place where the service, pricing, and efficiency were all excellent. No matter how long the line is, I'm usually in and out. Also, I know that all Avis locations do have a DNR or do not rent list for customers who have been known to use fake id's and harassing others and things of that nature so if your Driver's License was declined it doesn't necessarily mean that it was rejected by the MVA, but by all of Avis. So, with that being said, naturally you would have to go elsewhere as Avis takes customers' privacy and safety/security very seriously. It's not personal, but I'm sure they had a good reason for it. A lot of times the MVA doesn't know what the heck they are talking about. Anyways, I highly recommend this Avis. read more

Just a warning for anyone renting a car. DON"T USE AVIS! We have rented a lot of cars from a lot of different places and Avis is absolutely terrible! We rented a van at the Baltimore airport in April. It had overheating issues and we were nearly stranded on two different occasions. We had to find gas stations and put in antifreeze in the middle of nowhere. The really frustrating part was there was a jug of water tucked away in the engine compartment, so they knew there were problems BEFORE they ever rented it to us. We called their roadside assistance twice and were told to drive 200 miles out of our way to trade it in for another one. 200 miles? With a check engine light and overheating issues? We should have done it and seized their engine. It would have served them right. When we turned the car in, we requested some money back for all the problems. Their "preferred customer service agent" said they'd credit us back $190. She couldn't get her computer to do it right, so she took me to another terminal. While dealing with all of this, we missed our flight! When we got home, I found out she never did get it processed right. After about 8 phone calls and hours and hours later, they finally credited back the card. Then a couple of days ago, they recharged the credit card! Every person I talk to has a different story. What a pain. Just because they keep your card on file doesn't give them the right to keep charging it whenever they feel like it. read more
