Another car rental company lost my reservation when I was tired and had come in late from the West Coast! National BWI was glad to help me and saved the day. They had a wide selection of vehicles of the type I wanted in the Club aisle. One issue. The next day, I had a low tire pressure warning, so I assumed there was a leak. Called National Roadside Assistance. They were helpful but by then the closest open rental facility was in the airport. Went back to National BWI, who were expecting me and handled the switch out smoothly. Took my vehicle and got another one. Another minor issue. The next vehicle's display screen kept locking up when I tried to interface to Google Maps. Each vehicle was a nearly new Mitsubishi SUV. These are not really National's fault. Hope to rent from them again on my next trip! read more

I rented from National Car Rental on a work trip to Baltimore. I caught the shuttle to the car rental location. National was located to the left once inside the building. There was only one person in front of me, my wait time was 5 minutes. I showed my ID and provided a credit card. The checkout process took less than 10 minutes. I walked into the garage where I was met by an employee who pointed me to a mini SUV. I was very happy with the car as it had less than 3,000 miles. It still had the new car smell and drove like a dream. Drop off was easy peasy. I got in line and someone came to take the keys and check in the car very quickly. Then I hopped on the free shuttle bus which took me to the terminal. read more

I live locally and since I booked in advance I got a good rate for A cross country rental from National. This location serves the BWI airport and has sufficient parking spots for customers picking up cars. Check-in was smooth and only took a few minutes. We were asked to walk through the doors and the system is that you can pick up any car of your choice in your rental category. Since we booked a luxury crossover that had to drive one to us. We were thrilled by the Hyundai Palisades that was well maintained and clean. The employees were very courteous. During the time of your rental you get access to assistance using a dedicated text number. I was able to use this service to ask about how to pay for tolls. This information may be useful for others. Most rental companies have an arrangement that works with the license plate and the toll is sent to the rental company and they send you an invoice. It is convenient and I don't mind the processing fee charged over and above the toll charges. Overall it was a great experience. I'll be considering National more. read more

Arrived there by the airport at 12:30 am and I make reservation to rent a car to get out of the state and everything was going through until I get to the front desk with my debit card and he ignored it completely, even if coming from the airport with the flight ticket info . In the end very bad customer customer service with completely disrespect from the manager 3:00 am when he mention I asked too much questions and being present in front of the place a lot, even he knowing that I am stuck because of their lack of cooperation with me. I made the reservation through the application completely as usual and adhered to the procedures. But in front of the office they have different instructions from the main company. We have rented cars at BWI many times and as of the last few years we have struggled with some of the different care rental companies at the rental car facility for various reasons and written other reviews. We decided to give National a try and signed up for their Emerald Club. We reserved our car online prior to our arrival. I received an email when we landed at BWI telling me to go the Emerald Aisle and select a vehicle. We walked out the door and there were no cars in the Emerald Aisle so, we went back and and went to the counter. A young lady immediately walked out with us and told us to select one of the three vehicles in the Executive row. There were two convertible Ford Mustangs and another vehicle. We selected a silver Mustang and were on our way. Overall, considering the Thanksgiving holiday, lack of cars and ease of getting in and out of the rental car facility, we are very pleased with our experience. read more

It's a bummer that all of the BWI airport rentals are soooooo far off-site, it takes ages to get there from the airport and you really need to plan ahead g do or extra time upon returning your rental so you don't miss your flight. This was the easiest process EVER, which was important since I flew a red-eye in and arrived with a whopping 58 minutes of sleep under my belt, and flew a 6:30 out and arrived not much better. Ms. Frances at check-in (Tues Aug 29th at 10:00-11:00 am) was an absolute delight, and super efficient. I did not catch the name of the gentleman who helped me to figure out a car, but he was right about the Camry - super nice car to drive, now I want one. The process for checking back in was straight-forward enough that a sleeping person could have pulled it off (again, 6:30 am flight, much appreciated), and while I did not catch the name of the woman who checked the car back in (Sat Sep 2nd 4:30-5:00 am), she was also great. The car was clean, comfy, and zippy. I'd have driven it back to Oregon if they'd have let me. Also received excellent customer service over the phone in advance of leaving, from Eduardo. read more

First of all, I cringe every time I have to get on an airport shuttle to a rental counter. Then the BWI rental shuttle takes you around to the other side of the airport, taking a good 20-30min if traffic isn't good. This isn't necessarily National's fault, but considering all other rentals are coping with this fiasco, it just doesn't make for a good experience renting vehicles at BWI. Leaving BWI wasn't so bad, but returning was a mess. Had to drive for miles just to get to the actual location of Enterprise/National/Alamo. Since it wasn't very clear and not well-lit, I actually overshot the entry. Then going inside, could not see the guide anywhere for rental return, as it was really dark. When I finally saw the guide, I asked why I couldn't see her, maybe she could hold a light to better identify drivers where to go. Her reaction was "what'ch'you mean you couldn't see me?!?!" as if she was yelling at me. Whatever I just drove up and told the clerk about the confusion. He agreed that it wasn't well lit and she could hold a light or something to guide drivers through the dark. Once gathering belongings, the outdoor shuttle area was a zoo. Herds of people waiting to get on, then having to muscle your way to the front, just to get on... Once on, standing room only. I won't take an elderly woman's seat. So I was standing for 45min thru brutal stop-&-go early evening BWI traffic. Dude standing behind me was chit-chatting with someone and was brushing his stuff against me, pushing me forward. Just an awful experience overall. Instead of sitting aboard the bus to await arrival to particular door to airline counter, I just got off and walked to where I needed to go. Because of this, I will avoid flying into BWI all together, and rather opt for PHL or DCA, if possible or convenient. read more

This process was incredibly easy! I went ladybug.com and dates for pickup and drop off, which led me to Hotwire.com. From there, I reviewed my choices comparing prices and car preferences. I picked, paid and drove to get the car. At the counter, I simply needed the same card used with my license, he handed me the keys and brought me to the car. Done! They double check before leaving the garage and I was done. Pain free! I paid for Allianz insurance and that was $9 per day. Clean cars. Got a good corporate rate Don't waste your time getting a toll pass. You will eventually be billed the maximum rate of the Maryland toll facility you pass through ("video toll"). Went round and around with customer service regarding this. Essentially there's no difference between having a toll pass and not having one. You get the maximum toll amount due billed on your credit card presented at the time the rental. And below you can see the auto-response from the company if you rate anything less than 5 stars. I was on the phone today (8/17/22) and was told that the pass let's you "use our system " ( whatever that means, never got an explanation). Wanted to get a refund on the toll pass usage fee. Was transferred to another agent who said that the charge for the toll pass is a "service fee" so you " don't get a $25 toll bill". What????? The tolling agency ( Maryland Transportation Authority) billed $6 per trip ( maximum rate where a license plate is read by a camera and a bill is sent to the vehicle owner). In this case, National Car Rental. National researches and finds who rented the vehicle at the time the toll was incurred and bills them the outstanding toll. Maryland charges 1.5 times the base toll rate ( obviously there are "service fees" in this price hike) for the video toll. The woman I spoke to at National couldn't answer me when asked "if a $25 toll is incurred and Maryland sends the toll bill to National, why can't you research and bill the renter the $25? Why charge a "service charge" for a device that will make ZERO DOLLARS difference in any tolls you incur? Just like they billed me the $12 incurred on the day of rental. Chicken feed money. But it's principle. Anywhere that corporations can grab a few extra dollars from the common schmoe...... read more

Had to travel from BWI to Columbia, MD. The company that I work at only subscribes to the better/best car rentals, so they booked my car reservation with National Car. Note: This review is after you do the rental online. After you get a confirmation number for your car, you can go to their Counter, provide them your confirmation number. They will ask for a credit card. The purchase with the credit card is to make sure that if you did not provide a full tank of gas upon return of the vehicle, then they would charge your card for how many gallons that was needed to fill the tank. Also, if there's anything extra that you decided to add last minute to the car (phone charger, gps, etc), then they'd put it on the credit card. Once you sign for the car, they'll tell you to go to the left-side, and out the door. I didn't know WHERE to go, so I sort of stood around outside looking pretty stupid. Apparently, there is a booth at around 11'o'clock, so if you walk in that direction, you should see it. Once you go there, someone should be able to help you. They'll take you to the particular lot that has your type car. For example, the more economical (read: cheapass) cars are near the front, while the more luxurious are a bit further than that. And the SUV's and huge cars are a bit farther. Once you choose the car, you just plop yourself into the car, drive to the exit. There, someone should be there before you can exit. You show them your license and the paperwork you signed, and they'll let you out. When you need to return your car and it's after-hours, just follow the signs as to where to deposit the car. Because no one will be there, there's no way to exit the lots once you're inside the car lot. Keep following the signs, park your car where it says to, turn off the engine, leave the keys in the car, and make sure ALL doors are unlocked. You're done. Get your stuff, and then just go into the building and wait for the shuttle to get back to the airport. Wait is around 10 minutes or less. Pretty happy with my experience. Had no troubles, and wasn't as painful as I thought it would be. read more

I travel frequently, and often I need to rent a car from here to reach my destination. Most of the time, it's an uneventful experience, but I do run into the occasional issue. Once you get the hang of their system, it's actually quite a breeze. Sign up to be an Emerald Club member and you can just waltz into the parking lot and pick up any car you want. They don't really differentiate very well on vehicle class, though, which is a pain. You can tell which ones are Emerald Club cars, but not which size class. Shady... Most of the time, the cars are fresh, newer, clean, and full up on gas. Just be sure to confirm before you leave, though, and mention any discrepancies to the checkout person at the gate. You do not want to be held liable for a half-empty tank; that's nonsense. The service is spotty. Sometimes, they are super-friendly and very helpful. Other times, they seem to just be doing their job and have no concern for your well-being. Use their feedback to report this behavior, though; it's the only way they can improve, if they know they have let customers down. My last experience was great, and they actually worked with me on the rate while I was waiting for my free day to kick in. Long story, but we had to very quickly rent a car for a day, and the app was not cooperating. I tried to use one of my free days, but it hadn't gone through yet by the time I was checking out. Must be a delay between the online ordering and the actual systems at the rental location. Anyway, the checkout guy said he would let me rent the car for a much lower rate in the meantime, and I said I would call the next day to iron out the free day issue. It was nice of him and he didn't have to do that. Long story short, free day finally kicked in, only cost me 12 bucks with taxes and fees, and I got to try out a brand new 2015 Hyundai Sonata, a beautiful car. Overall, I would still recommend National. Their rates are a little higher, but their cars are typically top notch. The service is generally okay, but they could still use some improvement, and perhaps some more visibility in the parking lot. The process is smooth and easy, though be sure to educate yourself before you go. It can be tricky for first-timers. read more

I am a business traveler and my company has another company (Avis) slated as preferred, however on the rare chance that company is sold out, I can book with National. It is honestly unfortunate that this is the case for me as this company has many actions in place that are beneficial to the traveler. 1. You get to pick your own car. How many times have you rented a certain type of car (i.e. Intermediate sedan) only to find that they've "graciously" assigned you a Lincoln Town Car or a MiniVan. Yea, thanks but no thanks. This ability to pick out my own car saves me the hassle of going back, getting in line and explaining to the associate that you prefer something else. 2. Not only do the record your rental in their Emerald Club program, but you gain points that you can use later for a free rental. **cough, cough**... Avis, does NOT do this! 3. If you rent with them frequently enough, you get promoted to their executive level and get a choice of even better cars.... Imagine that! Avis, a better car to a sedan is NOT a minivan...#allshade 4. Both check in and check out is a breeze. I do like that in the event that you bypass the counter and don't have it assigned in your reservation, you can still receive a GPS at the gate. My biggest compliment from my last visit could have been just a random occurrence and could have not. I was returning my car, had just received my receipt and was about to take my luggage out of the trunk... A gentleman who worked for National breezed by just as I was reaching in and took my luggage out of my trunk for me. And just as quickly as he retrieved my luggage, he was gone. Would I rent here again? Yes!!! They respect the frequent business traveler, they make things easy on their customers and most of all, they've proven that maybe chivalry isn't dead. read more

Very helpful staff and reasonable prices Anyone who travels even a few times a year knows how crazy car rental places can be. It doesn't take much for a bad rep to start a trip off on a very bad note. That said, I've seen more obnoxious customers than reps in my time. National and the BWI rental car hub impressed me. They were pleasant and fast. And when there were only two mid-sized SUVs with both smelling like smoke, the rep gave me no hassle in putting me into a clean larger SUV. I can't blame them for bad customers. How they respond to what the situations that bad customers cause is something I look for. And these folks shined. Even the checkout booth lady was fast and acknowledged a few small items on the car that I noted. Having lost our car in the Great Flash Flood of '16, we needed a rental for a while. I have Emerald Club service set up through my employer and this was the first time I had to try it out. This National location is in the state of the art car rental facility down the road from BWI. It is designed for airport travelers to arrive and depart by shuttle, so the tiny parking lot out front fills to capacity fairly often, so if you're picking someone up you may have to park by the side of the road. Since I made our reservation on line, I was able to bypass the service counter and walk directly out to the garage as the signs clearly indicated. The signs in the garage are a little confusing, as they have several aisle dedicated to the different club programs they offer. There was an attendant walking around, and he was able to helpfully direct me and pick out a car from the many makes and models in the proper aisles. And the car was new, and clean, and great, and I wish I owned it. There was a bit of a wait to leave as there was only one checkout attendant, but it was a fairly painless process. From there we just followed the road to the secret back way into Arundel Mills for dinner. read more

I went to Baltimore on a business trip with two other colleagues. We had a reservation for a Full-Size Vehicle, and I assured my colleagues that since I was an Emerald Club member, there would not be any issues. I have never had a problem with National, and each time I use the Emerald Club service, I am always impressed. Boy, was I wrong---Baltimore is a JOKE! When I strolled into the parking garage, there was no signage as to what kind of car was what. Additionally, there were no available cars to choose from. Each vehicle had an occupant in it. Towards the back of what seemed to be National's row, there was a nice looking Nissan--as I approached the car a note was written in grease pen "Doors may be locked, key missing". Why the hell would that car even be in line? I approched the ONLY person that appeared to work for National and asked where the mid-size cars were. I was told 'just pick any car". I then asked "Does that mean I will get charged the full-size price?", and was met with a sarcastic response of "No--you will get charged with whatever you choose. We are low on cars." I informed the agent that this was not my problem, as I had made this reservation over a month ago. My colleagues and I waited for 45 minutes, and a Chevy Malibu pulled up. I went to ask the gentleman whom I spoke with earlier if this was a full-size (it looked like a mid-size to us), and he tersely said yes. We got inside, and the fuel tank was not filled, and it seemed like it was hastily wiped down. Additionally there was NO WAY this car was a full-size vehicle. Returning the vehicle was uneventful, and I have every intention of filing a formal complaint with National. Next time, I will rent from Hertz---this whole experience makes me not want to EVER rent from National again. read more

Overall my experience with Natioanl has been very good and I would normally give them 5 stars. However, my experience at BWI was less than satisfactory. It started with the bus ride to the rental center. At least 30 busses for parking lots went by before I saw my first bus for the rental facility. Unfortunately that bus went right on by without stopping. Then another 20 or so parking busses went by before anther rental bus came. The wait was at least 20 minutes. I got my car without incident but did not check the gas gauge and it was not until I was at my hotel that I saw the gas tank was only 5/8 full. I mentioned it to the agent when I returned the car and they gave me a $6 credit but a car should never go out without a full tank. So, I guess overall my issue is more with BWI than it is with National as a company. read more

Love National Car Rental in general. I use it all the time. The BWI location is however a challenge. The rental facility is a 12 minute bus ride away from the terminal. On return you also have to ride the bus. The result is 30-40 minutes added to my travel which is annoying. Depending on the time you arrive the selection of available cars can be very limited. The last few times the return staff has been slow and the bus drivers rude. Unfortunately I do not have a choice at BWI. read more

Eh. I have been to this location several times and normally receive the standard good service. However, I have/had Issues with this location. One time it was so bad I contacted National via email, something I have never done, and (to their credit) I received a call back from the manager. In that instance I was an executive level emerald member and tried to pick a four wheel drive vehicle from the executive aisle (as executive as long as pay for midsize you select any car from the aisle) but was told I could not. This was the first, and only time, in the dozens and dozens of times I have rented from National that I was told I could not have the vehicle that I selected. The apology was issued after I complained and, as a result, National provided me a free day. On my most recent trip, I noticed that there is no distinction in the car selections between the executive and regular emerald club members. Even their employees don't distinguish the type of vehicles offered between the levels, as I witnessed an employee tell a customer that it was fine for them to take from the executive aisle, when they remarked they were a normal member. Now I am not trying to be all elitist, but if National is offering the incentive to keep renting from them because if you do you get a better selection of cars, than this location should follow National's sets of standards. read more

Though the car rental is a bit far from the airport - the selection here is always good and this time I was able to try out a brand new Ford Fusion. Wow - that's a pretty amazing little car. Great on gas, tight steering and plenty of power! The return is easy to find - plenty of signs and I wasn't charged for not filling the tank back up - must be my status is actually helping out. Staff was super friendly picking up and on the return and the car - was immaculate - of course it was new :) One of the best car rental locations I've been to! read more

WHY HASN'T ANYONE CONTACTED ME????????????????????????? I've emailed SEVERAL times and get the same FAKE person, automated I'm sure!, and I've called SEVERAL (over ten???? I get no one or I get someone from India who can't give me a supervisor). I've contacted the National site 4 times and absolutely NOTHING!!!! I also filled out over the phone while on the shuttle a lost and found 'form' and when I try and check the status of that form, it tells me it DOESN'T EXIST! I left something in my rental car, I rent from National all the time for business travel and that will be my last. National is located in the Rental Parking Center which is about a 7 minute bus ride from the terminal. I went straight to the Emerald aisle and picked out my car from the Executive aisle. My husband and I rented a car at Baltimore Washington Airport last week. It was a superb experience. Travis at the counter was friendly and super efficient. He had us in and out in no time. "Miss Frances" met us in the parking lot with a smile and had a select a car. The lady at the checkout booth was friendly and told us to have a great weekend. My first experience renting at BWI was with National and it was excellent, better than my other experiences at airport and 'regular' locations. Francis was exceptionally helpful and patient while I asked for a few very specific vehicles. I repeatedly askED.for the staff to bring up several vehicles and she was friendly throughout the entire transaction. Randy (?) Was also friendly and helpful during the return process. It seems as though the staff here actually LIKE customers and it is refreshing. For the customer experiece alone, if cost was comparable, I would choose to rent here over a 'regular' location. Additionally, they have a wide selection of attractive vehicles - from the basics (both us and foreign made), to sexier XL SUVs (like cadalac escalade) and muscle cars (like dodge challengers) Overall an excellent experience. read more

Best rental car agency at BWI, period. I fly weekly (almost) into BWI and then have to pull a couple of hours of driving to get to my client site. I had been using Hertz for years and recently noticed a sharp decline in their their car selection, service and general lack of enthusiasm for helping out a loyal customer. A colleague suggested trying National given the fact he always got a great car, received great service and it was fast & easy. I tried it out over the last few weeks and couldn't be happier. Pros = nicer and newer car selection, faster service in and out (which means a lot at BWI's horrendous rental car set-up that is so far from the airport with spotty shuttle service), great web and email presence (start to finish), excellent customer service from folks who seem to care. Rented a full size car at BWI for an 11 day vacation in NYC, DC, and VA. The car was very nice, clean and comfortable. The staff at the desk and in the parking facility were friendly and efficient, and very courteous. After about twenty minutes of driving the low windshield wiper fluid light came on. Interesting in that I had not used any fluid or the wipers. All in all a good experience. read more

Absolutely love renting from National. You book an Intermediate, but end up getting a full size or even premium at times. There is no need to stop by the counter, just walk to Emerald Aisle or Executive Selection and pick any car you like. No running back and forth to get the car you want to drive. Selection varies depending on the time of the day, but plenty of Toyota, Nissan, Dodge, Kia, Hyundai etc in their selection. Cars are low mileage and Clean. Car rental itself is about 10 minutes drive from the Airport, so you do have to take the shuttle and need to time your flights accordingly. read more

National Car Rental has no compassion or empathy towards its customers. I made a reservation with national as an emerald club member, I was due to make a trip home on 7/21. Unexpectedly, on 7/15 I was notified my grandmother had just passed. I immediately made another reservation with national so that I could get home. A couple days after I arrived, the maintenance light came on in the car. I contacted National and was directed to speak with a specific department (do not remember the name) whom actually did a wonderful job. I contacted customer service twice, the first time I called the person didn't understand what I needed. I nicely thanked her, ended the call and called back to get someone else. I reached another lady whom I understood what I needed but couldn't pull up my reservation. It makes no sense that national employees do not have certain accesses or do not have certain system access to assist customers. The representative could not pull up my reservation, luckily I was able to find it. I explained that I needed to cancel the 7/21 reservation due to creating another reservation due to the untimely death of my grandmother. It sounded as if she had done everything right only to learn when retuning the vehicle on yesterday, the return location was Atlanta. The reservation for 7/15 was one way trip to be returned in MD. When I arrived, I was directed to speak with the manager whom was sitting in a office. I walked over and up to the window which was closed along with the door to the office. The manager, a young lady, was sitting down in front of a computer. I waited for about 3-5 minutes by which time another associate walked up. I approached him and stated; "I need to discuss my bill as I believe it's incorrect", the young man stated, while pointing, "you need to speak with her, pointing at the young lady sitting down in the office. At the same time, a white gentleman walked up, at which point the young lady sprang out of her seat, opened the door and immediately greeted the man. At which point the young man associate stated to the young lady, pointing at me "he was here first". With my bill totaling over $1500, this experience has left the worst taste in my mouth. I really do not know if I will be using national anymore. It's added more stress to what I'm already dealing with. This is just crazy! read more
