Avis desk at the Kalamazoo airport is the worst desk in the world!! I travel a lot for work and family trips. It takes a minimum of 15 minutes per person to pick up a car. Avis Preffered/Plus means nothing. Cars and paperwork are not ready ahead of time. The desk still uses a ribbon printer! This will be the LAST time I rent from this location for a year and I will try again to see if Avis improves. Furthermore I plan to share with colleagues, family and friends how bad this location is until I experience something better..in a year. This has been going on for years. I prepaid a booking for a luxury sedan. ($285) when trying to pay and close out the booking a repeated error message came up telling me the booking could not be completed. I rented a vehicle on a Friday for 3 days and at that point I was quite pleased with Avis but that changed when I returned the vehicle a day early. First there was no one at the counter but there was a lock box so after parking vehicle in the same spot I picked it up I dropped keys in the lock box. As I was leaving I noticed a slip on the paperwork I was given so I filled it out and also dropped it in lock box. Well fast forward to Monday I noticed that I had gotten my deposit but not the money for the 3rd day. I called Avis where I was informed that they had it noted that I didn't return the vehicle until the 3rd day. To which I replied they are lying. I was then sent an email with instructions on how to convince them that I returned it on the 2nd day. Well let me just say that I have not received my money and was told the documents I sent were not enough to convince them I returned it early!! Save your money and pay the little extra and go with someone else! Avis is nothing but thieves and their customer service representatives suck at their jobs, so unprofessional after correcting one of them she had the audacity to say "my bad" that was it!! Wally was rude and unprofessional on 8/28. He sent me off in a vehicle with the check engine light on and refused to help me even when I said I didn't feel safe. He told me I could "go across the street to Uncle Ed and get an oil change yourself if you want." He was rude and rolling his eyes from the moment he approached me. Not to mention that before he came to me he was in the back office with a friend (not a coworker) and police officer who I heard giving them a warning. Lazy workers and terrible customer service. I reserved a full size week long rental and went to pick up 8/6/24. Upon arrival I was told no cars were available and my only option was a Ram pick up truck. I explained this was inconvenient because it was raining and I would have no where to store my large two seater stroller. I was told I could check the next day to see if any full size rentals came in. So I accepted the truck because I had my toddler and 4month old with me who were both tired from a day of traveling. The next day I tried calling multiple times and they didn't answer so I went by and was again told nothing was available. And guess what, it was raining again so still no where to store my stroller. The next day I called and was told I could come and exchange the truck for a car. When I arrived I was given a Malibu, I began loading our things into the car and noticed their was what appeared to be vomit on the backseat. I went back inside to the counter where the agent asked me if I would be willing to clean it, ummmm No! He then said he had a Nissan Altima so I went with that. The Nissan was fine except the fact that it was dirty inside and out. I asked if it could at least be vacuumed and was told they had no one to do this. During this long interaction I walked back and forth from their counter to the rental car lot 6 times trying to get things squared away. On 6/13/24 I went to return the car and informed them I had another reservation for a new car because my trip had been extended. I was told I had to keep the same car I was in because there were no other full size vehicles. I requested a new clean car and was again told nothing was available. When I got home I called customer service and explained everything that happened. Customer service apologized for the inconveniences and told me I would be refunded 50% off the 1st rental agreement. Customer service (her name was Kawana), also called the location directly and requested an exchange. She informed me they had cars available and an Agent named Frank approved the request. As I was headed to the airport I received a call from a man name WALLY- the supervisor- from his personal cell phone (269-330-9618). Wally began speaking to me aggressively telling me I had no proof of all my complaints and he felt I was lying. He said he "Runs the Show" at that location and customer service has no authority over him. He said he would not be refunding any of my money and would not be granting an exchange for the dirty car. He then told me if customer service had a problem with it, they could take it up with him. I called customer service back and spoke to (Samesha). Samesha stated the refund would be processed by customer service in 3-5 days and Wally could not prevent this. I was told there was nothing they could do about exchanging the car if the location said they had none available. I explained that just 20 minutes prior the location agreed to an exchange coordinated by (Kawana), so clearly this Wally guy was on a power trip and decided to cancel the agreement. Samesha told me all she could do was send me to the nearest location in Grand Rapids but she couldn't guarantee they would have cars available either. I'm headed there to return this car now and pick up a rental from Hertz. I will never rent from Avis again! Lastly, you should not have to wait at a counter for 20 minutes listening to worker's talk and laugh in the back. Why isn't there ever anyone up front at the counter? I had a reservation with AVIS, went to get into my rental and it had a flat tire. I went back up to the counter, the guy gave me a different rental. I drove all the way home which is a 20 min drive opened up the back car doors to start putting my luggage in there. The car was trashed with empty Minute Maid container, seats were sticky and Cheeto crumbs all over the floor. The entire car smelled like Weed. I got back into the car drove it back to Avis. I told him what happened and he replied, do you have pictures? Like what; the car is in your lot, go look for yourself. I asked for upgrade; NO. My only option was a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I'm never doing business with them again. If wouldn't even refer my worst enemy to them either. STAY AWAY!! read more

I went to the website and the estimated price was $264 for one week. When I got there the price went up to $325 with all the additional fees. I signed an agreement with the $325 quoted. I returned the car and everything was on time and delivered in good condition. There were more extra fees my final bill was $395. They cheated me out of $130 from the original online quote. They said they could get her a car at another facility but she would have to find a way to get there. OR, she could just pay the $5/day extra to get an upgraded vehicle. Not right. Damon the counter clerk is extremely unprofessional and angry, and does a great disservice to the Avis Brand. He did not wear a mask as required by Michigan law (COVID-19 Executive Order is in effect) and was no 6 feet away; Very dangerous!. He would not provide a receipt for the rental transaction, and refused to provide the name of the manager/district manager when asked. Don't bother renting from this location, you have much better options and better customer service with the other rental car brands. read more

I booked a car online. Went to pick it up, all they had available were 12 passenger vans apparently. Even though I reserved a car. We tried to get a vehicle through other means, but they failed. The 12 passenger van would have been inconvenient due to the winter storm coming that evening. He stated I had to get the 12 passenger van since it was a same day order. As I was trying to figure out what to do. A lady walks in off the street and goes to three other car rental places, and they all tell her they are out. She proceeds to go to avis, the one that said I had to get a 12 passenger van for a same day reservation, and gets a Toyota camry. I was livid. By this point I just needed a vehicle. So I attempted to take the 12 passanger van. He stated I'd be able to exchange it Monday for a different vehicle. When we were going through the checkout process, his card reader wouldn't read my credit card. So I couldn't get the rental anyway. They were using a really old, out of date reader that was built into a keyboard. The entire process was terrible. Worst customer service I have ever dealt with. Use anyone else but avis or budget. These con-men gave me cars that broke down one way or another the last two times I rented from them. The second time, they gave me a car with worn tires. One of them popped just going down a 55mph road for no good reason. They are charging me $335 for the "repair" that had to be made. This Avis is located within the airport, even though a different address is given online. You are supposed to sign the paperwork saying there is no damage to the vehicle, before you even see the vehicle, but apparently you can come back to the desk and recant before leaving the lot. A bit shady. Then you are given your keys at the desk, and are sent on a hunt for your car in the parking lot. There are lots of confused people wandering around looking for their cars, pressing the alarm button. The car itself was great (better than my own), and the price was very good. This Avis location is kind of a no frills location. If you're not the first one off of the airplane you can expect to wait a bit to get your car since the counter is usually attended by a minimum staff. This is actually no different than the other car rental agencies at the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek Airport. There are plenty of marked places in the drop off lot to park your returning vehicle. Unlike larger facilities you won't be greeted at your vehicle or checked out there. At that point you need to walk to the terminal to complete your paperwork. That's fine if you're headed on an outbound flight but an extra step if you're dropping off and remaining local. If you've got good timing you'll have dropped off when a flight hasn't just landed and things will move expeditiously. Budget and Avis combine facilities here so if you have a Budget car there's a chance their counter will not be attended. A sign will direct you to Avis in case you do go to the Budget counter. All and all no frills but also no issues here. The staff is cordial and attentive. read more

Never ever prepay! I gave them my credit Card to reserve the vehicle for $67. When I tried to cancel the reservation 3 days prior they forced me to pay $50 or else they would charge me $150 if I waited for their customer service to reply to my refund request. Arrived at 9:30pm from my flight. I am a female traveling alone for a business trip. When picking up my car, the agent hands me my key and paperwork and says "you're in space X." I kindly explain I've never flown into this hotel before and could he tell me how to get to my car. He shows me a map on the counter with a nearer parking lot and a farther parking lot. He explains my car is in the farther lot. I asked if there was a shuttle since it's night, and I'm a female traveling alone and also am dragging 2 large suitcases with me. He said there's no shuttle. So I go out to find my car. Fast forward 20 minutes I'm still walking around in the dark and can't find my car. Poorly lit lot which is dangerous. The car itself is fine and clean but this degree of poor customer service and total disregard for safety is shocking. read more

Awful. I've rented here a dozen times (for business) and every car I get stinks like smoke. I tell the agent "please don't give me a car that stinks like smoke." Then they say "Our entire fleet is smoke free." Then I finally get out to the car and it stinks like smoke and whatever other even stinkier chemical they use to try to cover the smoke. But by that time it's too late to go back and change for a different car because it's a huge schlep and I have to get to my meeting. Awful experience. I had to cancel work and be on hold for hours, get passed around by people not taking responsibility and in the end was offered an upgrade for the replacement and a $20 discount on my next(?) rental. I rented a car from avis this past weekend. Well I should say I tried to. I have a large family, between the brothers, sister and mother, not everyone can fit into one car. We didn't feel like using 2 cars and all just wanted to go in one together. Went to go pick the car up, got inside and started everything at the desk, then all of a sudden, no car!!! No offer for upgrade, nothing! Supposedly, she couldn't find any information. I paid part of the fee, call about getting my money back. Now it's oh, you didn't rent it through us, call who you did. I dropped off a car on Thursday August 7th and picking it up on Monday. The desk was busy so I left the keys on the front desk and they said I would receive an email with the bill. It is now August 16th and no bill. I have tried to call the site many time and it transfers the call automatically to the AVIS national center. When I finally got a hold of the site they told me they would call me back and never did. I don't understand why this site has such an issue with Customer Service when all other Avis locations are fine. Someone should really look at thier process. read more

I rented a car here recently. The desk staff at the time were extremely friendly and helpful. The weird thing about this branch is that they do not do a damage walk through with you before or after you rent the car. Also there is no one in the lot when you drop off the car to inspect it. Six weeks after returning my car, I received a bill for a damage to the car with no explanation. I couldn't reach anyone at the phone number provided. I tried for about a week with different Avis phone numbers until I used their escalation page on their website. It turns out someone had rented the car after me, driven it to Kentucky, and then the car was inspected for damage for the first time since I returned it, and they decided to charge me for some inexplicable reason. All I received in return for my trouble was a "don't worry about the charge." I have rented with Enterprise dozens of times with no trouble, so I would recommend renting with them. read more
