Dents and long scratches around the whole car. Unable to call to reach anyone. Didn't want to risk going back to get a replacement car if none on stock. Most Horrific Car Rental Experience We had a reservation with Avis Car Rental in Kauai and arrived expecting a smooth pickup process. Unfortunately, our experience was anything but smooth. The employee behind the counter was not satisfied with my husband's credit card and asked for a second credit card. She then stated that the cards were not working and requested my credit card instead. This immediately raised concerns for us. My husband checked his credit card account on his mobile app and confirmed that the charge was showing as pending, which is normal when a rental company places an authorization hold. We showed this information to the employee, but she remained unconvinced and continued insisting that we provide my credit card. At that point, we became uncomfortable with the situation. We asked for our cards back and decided to leave. We then went across the street to Budget Car Rental. Even though we did not have a reservation, they were able to rent us a vehicle without any issues and only required one credit card, which has been our experience with most rental car companies. Based on this experience, we found the service at Avis to be frustrating, unprofessional, and unnecessarily difficult. We will not be renting from them again. read more

We rented a sedan 3 months in advance. Got there and they said they didn't have one and we would have to pay to upgrade. We picked the cheapest one at an extra $20 per day. Then I was told my insurance company doesn't cover rental cars starting in 2026. I told them they did in 2025 so you're telling me it changed? I ended up purchasing the cheapest insurance since we only had the car for 3 days. This was totally false. Found out when we dropped off our car that they did the same thing to the couple waiting for us. They also had to pay for an upgrade they didn't want. Rented from the Avis location in Lihue, Kauai and returned the car through the Avis concierge / preferred program. After the rental was completed, I was hit with a $450 "sand cleaning" charge. Avis did provide a photo as their justification. The photo shows... sand. On the floor mat. This is Kauai -- an island where people rent cars specifically to go to beaches. Nothing was mentioned at the time of return. The charge simply appeared afterward, along with the photo of what looks like completely normal beach sand you would expect in a rental car in Hawaii. If the standard at this location is that any amount of sand results in a $450 fee, customers should be warned very clearly in advance. Because by that standard, almost anyone visiting the beach could be charged hundreds of dollars after returning their car. The whole situation makes the Avis "preferred" or concierge experience feel pretty meaningless when you can still get hit with a massive charge later for something this ordinary. If you're renting a car in Kauai and planning to go to the beach -- which is basically everyone -- you may want to choose a rental company that understands that sand is part of being on an island. read more

I would not recommend going to this location. The people were really nice when we picked it up and the car itself was great for our week long trip. The issue was with the drop off and our charges. We had a red eye, so when we dropped the car off, the office was closed and there was limited staff. The guy came and checked everything and said we were good to go. He never mentioned us owing anything for gas. He told us to wait for the shuttle on the benches by where we dropped the car off. We watched as three shuttles drove by without coming in and picking us up. My husband went to talk to the woman working and asked if they are going to stop here or if we needed to go somewhere else. She said that the bus would stop by, but they don't when they are full. I had watched the bus drive by and it was not full. My husband said okay we were just wondering since we have been waiting about 15 minutes. She scoffed and said we hadn't been there that long. I think this woman was the manager and her customer service was horrible. Then when we got our bill they had stated that we left the car empty and charged us $130 for gas even tho we had filled the tank. Luckily, we were able to call in to the national customer service line and send in proof that this was incorrect. They refunded us the money. I don't know if this is a scam they do, if it was malicious, or if it was a weird coincidence, but I would check out one of the other providers before using Avis. If you do book here, be sure to take pictures of the car and gas tank gauge if you fill it and have receipt as proof of purchase for the gas. read more

Possibly the worst part of our stay in Lihue. Provided with a beat-up Nissan due to "limited inventory". Understandable, as it was Christmas. Found that it has a massive gash on the side and brough it back for an exchange. Was told "not to worry about it". A month later received a bill for $2.2k in damage from a collections agency. Thankfully I had the foresight to take a photo of the damage the moment I spotted it. All in all a poor way to run the business. I am only giving stars for the employees working there. Kayla especially was very helpful and friendly. As far as Avis itself, i prepaid for my vehicle online which was $150. After I return my vehicle for only using it only 2 days, I check my credit card statement and see TWO, not one but TWO charges of $250 in Virginia Beach, after I had already prepaid for my vehicle. I never went to Virginia Beach. Luckily it was a pending transaction so I called my credit card company and reported it as fraud so it didn't go through. I will be calling Avis anyway to see why this happened but I do not recommend Avis. I researched Avis after finding this out and it seems like a common issue they overcharge you then you can't get in touch with them. Do not use Avis. I recommend hertz or enterprise. read more

10/22/22 Not our first choice at all but when hubby booked our flights the only offer given was Avis. He checked Alamo & at the time it was sold out of rental cars (What?!) . Before we began our adventure, hubby read up on car rental agencies doing some underhand dealings--tacking on extra charges if you're not paying attention. Even with that in mind, when we turned in the rental, he told the male staff that he wanted to go into the office to checkout & have a printed receipt. He said that it's going into his email. He sure was fast! Hubby checked his email and it looked like we got $90 added on for an extra stay, and no, we did not. In any case, hubby went into the office to request for a printed receipt & the unfriendly staff said his printer is out of ink (a likely story, ha!). We figure we have some time to wait at the airport to settle things. Long story short, hubby sat down & read it over, luckily it wasn't an extra charge after all. In any case, next time we'll have to ensure we get Alamo instead, bigger, better selections. But as a heads up, always check your receipts, sometimes when you're tired or in a hurry, you might not be as mindful what extra charges these companies are adding. read more

The woman staff who checked us in was so condescendingly invasive in her questions! - questioning us if I we were married or living together. We booked our reservation through Costco which included a 2nd driver. It has no restrictions about living together in the same household. Also, the reservation was for $504.70, but I received a credit card notification after we left that I was charged $700+! We had to go back to the counter to ask her why there's a difference. She never explained to us that there's a hold or deposit on my credit card. She just asked us to sign several pages on the iPad without any explanations (there's really no time to read those fine prints) so a brief explanation would help your customers. It seems that we were dismissed and not given good customer service experience when we told her that we are not getting the collision damage waiver insurance (as this is already covered by my Chase Sapphire Reserve card). Hey, Why the hard sell? Why push your staff to sell this? Do your staff get a commission for pushing this coverage? You can identify this employee who checked us in on October 15, 2024. (Let us know if you need the contract / reservation number.) She definitely needs a refresher course in customer service. Also, we are just curious - does the person checking in the renter select the car from the available cars that is assigned to the renter. We just felt that we were given a lousy Kia Kona instead of the Toyota Corolla that was advertised on the Costco site. (We know it says "or similar"), but we're wondering if she gave us the lousy car because we didn't get the extra waiver collision damage insurance and prepaid gas. But for what it's worth, our rental car return was more pleasant though. The lady was very efficient. However, our check-in experience really overshadowed whatever good experience we had when we returned our rental car. No wonder this Avis location has crappy reviews on Yelp. However, 8 months later in December, i received a false damage bill from Avis budget group for $2500 initiated by the Lihue Airport Avis. Fortunately I had taken photos of the undamaged car and mileage when I dropped it off and was able to refute the claim. But it is in very bad form for this location to damage a car and try to pass the bill on to the last renter. read more

Sorry. It needn't be as inefficient as they run this place. First, instead of giving cars that are parked and ready, they clean cars that just were brought back to give to new renters. So you have to wait for the entire cleaning process. I waited 45 minutes. And the line kept getting longer and longer. The exception was people getting vans. May e became there were less of those being returned, they gave out those that were parked and waiting. So if you rented a van you got it in half the time. Second, they have three people cleaning. And each car takes about 15-20 minutes. I imagine the cars have a lot of sand. The bright side is the cars are cleaned decently well. Except the inside windshield which was smeared with cleaning solution or something and I couldn't see out of it. I wiped it down on my own. read more

Awful experience and the worst Avis I've ever rented from. Management and the basic workers need to do a better job all around. We were supposed to pickup our car at 3pm. We arrived at 2:55pm and got to the counter at 3pm. The representative said our car wasn't going to be ready on time so we had to wait for them to clean it, put gas in it, and wash it. We ultimately got the car at 3:30pm. No issues with the car throughout the trip. However, when we returned the vehicle, the car attendant said we were good to go like normal and that we would be emailed our reciept. By the time we got our digital receipt we were already in the airport at the gate. I noticed the guy who checked our car said we didn't fill up our gas tank and he erroneously charged us for 4 gallons of gas at nearly $8 a gallon. I immediately called the Avis number and couldn't get in touch with the Front Desk and instead talked to an Avis representative at the National customer service level. I told the representative that the guy who checked our car was clearly attempting to defraud me. Luckily I had reciepts from the gas station that show I filled up the tank. So frustrating and upsetting that these guys failed on multiple occasions at different levels. Its infuriating to be knowingly defrauded. I would not recommend renting from this poorly managed franchise. read more

Folks cleaning cars and checking vehicles were very busy when I drove in. Take your time driving down the drop off line if driving one of their war wagons. Avis/Budget are a single service. Our recent experience: 90 minute wait for preferred status. No cars waiting despite Avis saying that you just pick car and go. Car was beat up, dents and scratches all over and dirty inside. Window was so dirty we had to pull over to clean it. Others ahead of us immediately brought theirs back as filthy, sweat stained or smelly. One agent was on their 11th hour working and was sooooo sloooooow. I love living in a system no matter how flawed that allows me to fly halfway around the world, rent a car and go about my business. They make a profit and Im a happy camper. Well, almost happy. Usually, when I fly in here and go to pick up my car,I am offered a free upgrade to a convertible Mustang. Now, anyone who has cruised Kauai in a convertible is hooked. On this trip I had a fantastic evening driving back around the island from the northernmost point on the Napali Coast. Priceless experience. It would not have been anything close to that experience if not in a convertible. However, this time they not only charged me an arm and leg(seems like highway robbery) but stuck me in a Camaro convertible. I know I know, the old Ford vs Chevy thing. I just don't think it's half the car so I wasn't happy with it. You know how it goes though. I'll forget about all that, show up at the Lihue airport this spring, and take what they give me! I am surprised to see all these Karen's making comments here and complaining about little things here and there. Our 2021 (30k mile) Kia Sportage which we were assigned for a rental due to a free upgrade to intermediate size SUV was a champ!! At first we were hesitant to use the vehicle because it has some small dents on the side and didn't go through any pre-inspection but hey brah who cares. You're on the islands now . We were expecting at first maybe for a newer Toyota Rav 4 but we were surprised after 4 days how safe and economical this little 2 year old veteran ran. We drove our rental all the way north to Hanalei and as far west as Spouting Horn/Port Allen. Very enjoyable vehicle for my wife and I. After only 4 days of driving it only consumed a little over half tank. Filling it back up was $50.50 at the local Texaco. Customer service was friendly to us and we had a small misunderstanding as we didn't know that Avis Premiere rentals didn't require you to fall in line. Just go to the outside kiosk, look for you name and grab your key and rental agreement. Our shuttle driver Roland was a fellow Filipino and I had the pleasure of knowing that he spoke the same Filipino dialect as myself. We had a small and enjoyable chat. read more

Lihue Kauai Airport Poor experience. We are Avis Preferred customers and the Grand Cherokee we were initially provided had been smoked in and sprayed with deodorizer, two unpleasant odors. We drove back to exchange it the next day. We were directed to another Preferred stall with a Kia Telluride. On approaching we could see a significant dent in the hood and called it out to the attendant. She said "no problem just document it right there by taking photos of it capturing the damage, license plate and stall number. That would cover us on the return because the date is on the photo." Best choice we made so far. Upon return the attendant called out the hood damage and we provided the photos. He said " No problem" . While waiting to board the rental receipt came in as usual and then another email with a "Damage Capture Report For Rental Agreement " Attendant stated damage happened while in our possession and turned it over to 3rd party Sedgwick to settle with our insurance and or/credit card. Now in the process of dealing with Avis Customer Service on this one...and of course we are highly aggravated. Side note the shuttle system is inadequate but rental agency is about a 4 block hike if you are mobile enough. read more

terrible service from beginning to end. rented a Tesla, with no instruction. Couldn't get the car in gear, and got locked out. called the AVIS help line and got the run-around. Ended up calling a friend that owned a Tesla and he walked us through everything. When we picked up the car in only had a 35% charge. when we returned the car, we were told to just leave the keys in the car. three days later received a text saying we hadn't returned the car and it was overdue. Called the AVIS help line again, with no success. Also, when we picked up the car there were two sets of keys, one worked, one didn't. Only later did we notice the set that didn't work were actually for a different Tesla. To top it all off, staff were terse and unfriendly. Next time we come back we'll use Hertz. read more

Then they have short hours so you are bussed over to other agencies instead - wait in longer lines - then given the worst car they have as you are with AVIS! I rented for 3 weeks over Christmas - had a dirty car with dents and no washer fluid and then double the insult they CHARGED ME $250 for a false cleaning fee 2 weeks later! Never use Avis. When we got the car from Avis, within the first day the car was saying it needed maintenance, and the oil changed. The key would stop working randomly, it wouldn't open the trunk and wouldn't unlock the doors. THEN, the car wouldn't not go at all. We couldn't start the car, the car was saying we had the incorrect key id even though we have been using the same key the Avis company gave us for less than a week. When we tried to get simple help, it took hours. We tried to get the car towed. Said they would come at 2:50 to 3:35 which was hours away. When that time came no one showed up at all. We have been sitting in a grocery store for the whole entire day with no one coming to help us, or get the car. (edit: 3 HOURS LATER STILL WAITING! been waiting for more than 7 hours!!) read more
