this is the worst rental car experience I have had in a long time. Instructions given for pick up at the airport was different then what happened. Then, the car was broken in the back with the rear hatch and no option to change out cars or anything. Then they expect us to crowd more in the car for airport return with their driver when we are already full to the max. And though their driver was friendly, he doesn't understand much English nor speak much of it. This was not helpful when pickup was different than the instructions we were given. Paul has no care or concern for the danger his poorly managed cars create for driver's on the road. Paul was kicked off AirBnB for violating their policies. My advice: Believe the bad reviews. Paul, the owner, was very nice until our car wouldn't start. He would not respond to our calls or messages as he had been prior. I had to go through Airbnb support and begin a case. He claimed that the car breaking down was our responsibility and that it would go through our car insurance, which is against Airbnb's own policy. He claimed that it was on us to pay for a tow truck, which was also against their policy. He became very nasty, and I will never ever recommend giving this business any more money. read more

The new owners switched vehicles on us at the last minute, from a Toyota Camry, to a Ford Fusion. The vehicle is NOT parked across from the Lihue Airport, as was done in the past. In addition, when starting the vehicle, the water pump bearings sounded like they were ready to fail at any time. The new owner, continued to assure us that nothing was wrong with vehicle. However, the four passengers in this vehicle are in our 70's & mid 80's and were uncomfortable the entire week we rented this car. Maybe, the new owners should consider changing their name to the following: Kauai~Rent-A-Wreck? We were very disappointed that our original agreement had NOT been honored & that this last minute change occurred, preventing us from making other arrangements. I would NOT recommend this company any longer, even though their rental fees are reasonable. In this case, we got what we paid for!!! read more

Wow, I'm not sure if these were the original owners as I have not experienced such "unenthusiastic" responses from business owners related to customer concerns. First off if anyone rents the maroon jeep pick up please beware as it stops randomly. I reported this to the owner and their initial response was that this was just a common feature in Jeeps! I stated this is a safety concern and after me bugging they agreed to exchange my Jeep for a much smaller vehicle. Sorry I paid for a truck and I want a truck exchange. Also they changed the terms of pick up and drop off and expect you to honor this after you give them your money. I have never had a worse experience with a company :(. I am a person who isn't hard to please. I wanted to give my business to a local company, and honestly I am SO disappointed to have to write this review. I wish I could give ZERO stars. I left 3 voicemails prior to my trip,trying to confirm my booking. I got no reply. I got an automated confirmation text the day before my booking, so I just hoped for the best that all was good. When I arrived to pick my car up, it was BLOCKED,by a big red truck, parked cross- wise in front of my car. I immediately called and texted the one number I had for Kauai Rent a Car. No response (as had been the case over the past 3 days). I ended up having to physically MOVE (with help from A kind stranger) A large and HEAVY tent structure, over about 2 feet to the left, which gave me *just* enough room to squeeze the car out from behind the truck that was in front of it. If I was not a super resourceful person, or just not physically fit enough to do this, I would have had to rent another vehicle at another company, which obviously would have cost me more money. So right there I would have been entitled to a refund, but I didn't even ask for one, because hey , I managed to get the car out,right? Like I said, I'm easy to please. My negative feelings could have been assuaged at this point, however, it gets worse. When Elise finally texted me back, instead of being apologetic, she actually *scolded* me for the fact that it was "after midnight" and said she "doesn't answer emails or phone calls only texts" and she "turns her phone off after midnight". I picked up my car at 7:30 PM KAUAI TIME. She informed me she was on the mainland, for her father in laws funeral, and so she "wasn't answering calls". A) how was I supposed to know she wasn't in Kauai?? B) She had not informed me, nor put up any kind of notification on the website that she would only be responding to TEXTS. C) I absolutely sympathize for your loss (which I very kindly told her), but what kind of business doesn't PUT SOMEONE ON THEIR PHONE and EMAIL to answer customers, while they are away dealing with a family emergency? Especially a CAR RENTAL company where there can be mechanical breakdowns, emergencies etc?? I cannot tell you how Elise's replies disappointed me. She actually told me she "didn't appreciate (me) saying I was 'disappointed in the lack of communication' from her, and again tried to make me feel bad for disturbing her "after hours". I was ready to let all this go,and just get on with my vacation. But then,we discovered that Kauai RAC had also given us the WRONG rental equipment. We had rented two SUP's from them, to do a river paddle on our last day in Kauai. We didn't notice that both the big bags in the back of our rental car,we're not both SUP's, until the last morning of our trip. Again - remember that when we arrived we had to deal with the utter chaos of trying to even GET OUR RENTAL CAR OUT, with the truck blocking it!! So being exhausted after all that, we just did a quick visual check that there were two SUP (we assumed) bags in the back of the car. But when we went to take them out the morning of our river paddle, we discovered that one of them was a large double Kayak. I texted Elise to inform her that she gave us not two SUP's but one SUP and a double Kayak. I asked for a refund for both, because frankly, we are SUP people and we don't kayak. Also, my friend has certain mobility issues that make it hard for her to sit for that long in a kayak, that's why we both like to SUP. And that's WHAT WE ORDERED. Elise responded to my request telling me that the kayak was "an upgrade", that it was better then the SUP,and that "we could've paddled down the river in the kayak,many people do It's faster." I don't care if it's an upgrade, I didn't order a double Kayak! I mean, the absolute lack of ANY accountability for mistakes that THEY made, was mind boggling to me. Elise proceeded to tell me there would be NO refund, even for the ONE SUP that we didn't get. I am floored. She said that "because we didn't inform them about the SUP's until the last day of your booking, we cannot refund you for the equipment". So basically - YOU gave me the wrong equipment, I did not get the second SUP that I ordered and paid for,but you can't give me a refund?? Because I didn't inform you earlier? This is absolutely ludicrous. If you want a nice relaxing vacation, and you want to be sure you actually get what you paid for, PLEASE DON'T USE KAUAI RENT A CAR. Expect 10-15 travelers in line and only one or two workers at the counter going very VERY slow. Headache. Overall renting from Kauai Rent a Car was a very positive experience for us. They came highly recommended from friends who just came back from Kauai and raved about their experience. First off, the customer service from this family operation is nothing short of outstanding. They take care of all the usual annoying details so you can simply walk off the plane, retrieve your car and drive away. The return is just as easy. I look at our experience this way...you are on vacation and in the same town as your Aunt Phyllis and Uncle Felix. You haven't seen them since your sister's wedding in 1989. They live in the same home that you remember as a kid. Nothing has changed...the orange formica kitchen counters, the oil cloth with willow trees and dusty knick knacks surrounding the kitchen on a small ledge Uncle Felix added in 1983. They offer you their back up car that Phyllis mainly uses to run errands and volunteer work for the Women's Lutheran Auxiliary Club. Her 2002 Sonata is in pretty good shape and has 113k miles on it. Why buy a new car when this car is reliable?! We got to cruise around like a local with our older car. We had problems with the car locks but we were always able to get in. We did have a scare going up and down hills one day. The brakes overheated and it was hard to brake. We needed to let the brakes rest and cool off so we wouldn't have any casualties. Aside from that, no major problems. Realistically there is more potential for problems with older vehicles, and i am confident they would find a way to make it right...just like Aunt Phyllis and Uncle Felix! read more

Very bad experience with this company. The original Jeep Gladiator (very expensive) wasn't in the lot after arrival. I texted. after a while I got a text that the Gladiator was broke down and the replacement vehicle would be brought by in a while by one of their employees. Took about twenty minutes and the guy shows up with a Hyundai tucson (definitely not an equivalent vehicle.) It got worse after that. Long story short I had three different vehicles over 8 days and two of them were of the hooptie (junk) variety and was berated by the owner that I was the one with the problem. I could go on and on, but I will just finish with this. Do not rent from these people because they will try to turn all their failures back on you. I used them as a last resort after my legit rental wasn't booked by my agent and I had to do something. Find another way or cancel your Kauai trip and go to Maui. read more

We just finished a week in Kauai, and had a great experience with Kauai Rent A Car. When we first looked into getting a car when we were heading to Kauai, we were shocked what the majors wanted for a economy car - $650 for a week, $144/day. Then, we found Kauai Rent A Car. As others here have said, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. We booked a car at $40/day, and for an extra $15 they brought it to our hotel for pickup. The car was a Hyundai Santa Fe in good condition, and better than you'd expect for 86,000 miles. It had plenty of room for luggage/grocery bags etc. along with 4 people, and was certainly clean enough for us. The car did exactly what we needed - it ran well and we got to drive around the island and see the sights with no trouble at all. The only drawback was that the mileage on a small 4WD SUV like this was not great (14 mpg) but then again, there aren't that many miles to drive on Kauai. Since the majors want even more money for a small SUV like this, we felt it was a great bargain. Although it's nice to drive a new car on vacation, we'd rather spend the money on surfing or shopping. When we return to Kauai the next time we'll certainly be checking out what Kauai Rent A Car has to offer. read more

I am a reasonable person, but would NOT RECOMMEND this company. I saw several good reviews, so I tried them out. Mistake. I requested a quote and after some clarification, I requested a reservation on 3/30/21. NO RESPONSE. EVEN 2.5 MONTHS LATER. I have called/emailed repeatedly. their phone message system is almost always full, so only got to leave a message once. (I've called probably 30 times in the last couple months). Now with the car shortage, I can't even get a rental car. they pretty much hosed me because I thought we were good to go with them. I should not have relied on them, and ignoring people who want to make a reservation is not a good business decision. Did you try and find a rental car in Kauai (for a "normal" price) as of late ? - I have and couldn't! Hearing of people renting UHAUL trucks in an attempt to reduce cost - and seeing UHAUL trucks at hotels parking lots... Luckily I found Kauai Rent A Car and was able to rent a car for a decent price. Yes the car was from the early 2000, and often people thought I was a local just because of that.. although the car was old, it was extremely clean, with great AC and MPG. communication was a breeze - receiving texts with instructions, email and always answering the phone. Car was waiting right outside the terminal (no need for a shuttle) I was very happy with the entire experience. 5 stars from me and will defiantly be using their service again. read more

We were having trouble finding a car rental place with availability, but we called this one and they had a car ready within the hour for us! We were given a good deal on the car for 4 days, and were provided with a car seat for our 2 year old, after not having ours on hand with us. The car was a bit older and run down, but we wanted a car to get around in, not show off, and we had no problems with it. We drove around the island multiple times and got good gas mileage. I have filed a complaint with the Hawaii OCP, about Hawaii Rent A Car, and am attempting to file one with the Kauai BBB. Our experience is similar to others who have reviewed this company recently on google. The 20-year old Accord had several issues, including a temporarily unusable front passenger seatbelt. I attempted to terminate the rental early but was subject to a rant from Carolyn (who appears to be the newer owner of this business - no sign of "Pete") about "contractual' obligations and was not offered a replacement vehicle nor even a refund for the portion of the rental when the car had been returned to their possession. This business needs to be investigated, and I hope I have set that in motion. read more

This is a great local company to work with if you're looking for reasonable prices and a decent car. Their cars are old, but they run just fine, and that's really all you need. I'd originally made a reservation with Dollar, but, when I called to confirm the week before, I had a strange feeling and double-checked, and it turned out they'd made my reservation for Maui, not Kauai! (Despite my spelling out the code for the Lihue airport.) Then, they wouldn't honor the price they had originally given me, and I had to make several phone calls to customer service to sort it out. (Then, when I asked about changing the time of return by only an hour, I was told that that would change the entire rate. Ugh.) Later, I happened to look at the Wizard Publications website and found Kauai Rent a Car listed. Called and was quoted a good rate for a Honda Accord, but decided against it since I'd found a cheaper rate at Island Car Rental. Then I read the yelp reviews of Island Car Rental, and got a bit nervous. Called Pete from Kauai Rent a Car back a few days later and, while the Accord was rented, he had an old Buick available for less money. I took it. Well, the car was old (no cd player or anything, some scrapes), but everything worked fine, and it didn't look like a brand new rental car that might attract thieves. Excellent customer service, too--nice to deal with an individual and not some money-grubbing corporation with service reps abroad. Pete brought the car to the airport, and we were able to leave it there when we flew out. He was also quick to respond to my phone calls and questions, and seemed very down-to-earth. I also appreciated his reasonableness when my boyfriend accidentally scraped the bumper on a lava rock wall. Oops. He did charge us (it was a big scrape), but I felt like he was totally reasonable. That would've been a huge pain had I rented from one of the big rental firms. The only thing I didn't like was that our car got horrible gas mileage. (I guess that's what you get when you rent an old Buick.) Next time I'd try to get the Accord or something else, but I would definitely rent from Kauai Rent a Car again. We've rented cars from Pete and Valerie a few more times since my previous review. We're partial to the small SUVs like the Hyundai Sante Fe. They've been great! The cars work fine, you blend right in and you save a lot of money. Pretty simple. For the people complaining about the older cars they rent, please read this: IF YOU WANT A NEW CAR, RENT A NEW CAR. Do not rent from here unless you want to deal with old, beat-up cars. Your vacation in Kauai is not worth the stress of trying to find 'the right car' from their fleet when all of them are 10+ years old and have at least 95,000 miles on them. I will say that everyone at the firm was very friendly and helpful. I'd give 5 stars for customer service but the cars are another story... Our first car: 2001 Toyota Corolla with 122,000 miles on it. Ran OK but had a tough time getting up to Koke'e State Park where, unfortunately, we were spending our first few days in Kauai. We didn't drive the car much except to get to our cabin and for a couple of re-stocking trips down to Waimea. Since the car had a tough time getting up the mountain and I didn't feel safe in it with our 2 young kids, we asked to switch it - Pete and his team were very accommodating and offered us a Chevy Malibu with 70,000 miles on it. By the time we could make the switch, the Chevy Malibu wasn't available. Instead, we ended up getting a 2002 Saturn SL1 with 95,000 miles on it. We thought we were trading 'up' but got a car that had manual roll-down windows and no way to adjust the driver's seat for a short driver like myself. It had a little more juice than the Corolla but nothing to make up for the fact that we spent an extra hour making the switch. In both cases, the A/C was working but not well. My 1998 Volvo station wagon seemed like a spaceship compared to these cars. I should have read the Yelp reviews before booking. I have never seen much difference with rental car companies before (Enterprise, Hertz, etc) so didn't think there could be a big one and we wanted to support a locally-owned business. But, please watch out for Kauai rent a car - know what you're getting yourself into before you buy. Yes, the prices are a bit cheaper because they rent 10+ year old cars with lots of mileage on them. The pros to this model is you don't stand out as a tourist with a new model from the national agencies and it's a bit cheaper. I wish they had just been a bit more proactive in describing the actual cars they were saddling us with. For example, they could list the particulars of each car on their website and let you know which one you will be getting. But the cons are, the cars may not run well, you may not have niceties like automatic windows or working AC and they don't have an office where you can go if you have any problems with the car. As soon as we got another rental car from a national agency, I have not worried one minute about the car. The cars from this agency are worth $4K at best - yet they're being rented out at $20/day. It's not worth the hassle! read more

When I return to Kauai, I will get my car from Kauai Rent A Car! It was sooooo easy and sooooo cheap. When I go to the east coast I usually go through Budget or Thrifty, but on the island they were quoting around $450 for 5 days! I thought we were going to go broke, but Kauai Rent A Car was under $200. You need to book ahead of time, as they took a bit to call back, but it really was the best car rental experience. We faxed all our info over ahead of time, and the car was waiting for us when we got off the plane. It wasn't the best car (PT Cruiser), but really, who cares? It got us around! On our way back into Lihue for our flight home, a transistor blew and traffic was backed up.... We almost missed our flight. We hadn't filled up yet, so we called and talked to Pete, who told us not to worry about it. He'll just charge us for the gas- which was super nice. Long story short, I was a little nervous about using an unknown car rental place, but you have no reason to worry. This place is well run! Thank you!!! read more

This rental car company is so convenient, and so much cheaper than all the other rental places around, because this is a small business. I only paid $250 for 7 days, including pick-up and drop-off at the airport. When we landed at Lihue, the car was waiting for us in the parking lot across the street from Baggage Claim. And when it was time to leave, we just left it in the same parking lot. I have never experienced such a convenient Rental Car company. The cars are a bit more run down then you would normally see, but it got us from point A to point B with no issues. So as long as you're not high-maintenance about appearance, then you should definitely go with this company. We had a Suzuki Grand Vitara and there were small issues with the car that were definitely manageable. The AC only got cold when the AC was shut off, the driver's side window sometimes got stuck, there was a slight whistling when driving. No big deal to our party, because we were in Hawaii with a rental car that cost almost half as much as the big companies charged there. Getting in contact with them was easy as well. I left a message, and they called me back within 2 days, then emailed me all the information I needed. About a week before we were to arrive in Lihue, they emailed me the contract to fill out and return to them. Hassle-free. read more

I waited too long to rent a car, and rates at all the national chains went from $50 a day to $200+. I freaked, as there's no way I'd ever pay that. Fortunately, I found Kauai Rent a Car on Craigslist. They were responsive with a quote and I was lucky enough to reserve their last car. My wife and I were a little worried about getting taken advantage of, but these guys were great. They picked us up and dropped us off at the airport, everything was super smooth, and the car was exactly as promised. It was an older model, but worked great and was exactly what they promised. I was very, very happy with this company. We were having our honeymoon in Kauai and I had overlooked the rental car aspect, so the day of our wedding I was calling around and found Kauai Rent a Car. Valerie called me back after I left my desperate message and she was able to expedite the paperwork stuff and made sure we had a car waiting for us at the airport the next afternoon! The car, a Nissan Maxima, was so incredibly clutch during our week there. It worked great and the A/C did too which is important! We were able to drive all around the island and then just dropped the car back off at the airport before we boarded our plane and they took it from there! I LOVE THE FACT that their cars are a bit lived-in, and reliable. I get to blend in with the locals, and not stand out like a big ol' stupid tourist in the latest convertible Mustang. Seriously, people, it's an ISLAND. Nobody needs to go anywhere so dang quickly that you need a MUSTANG. The prices were super reasonable, and best of all, there was none of that standing in line at a counter at the airport trying to figure out what you want to drive and for how long. Pete & Valerie made it so easy, that you just literally walk right off the plane and plop your happy ass right into the car in the parking lot. Returning the car is made just as easy. Warning: I didn't pay attention to the requirement "...to have an active working phone once you land at the airport so we can leave you a voice message". First 3 days in Kauai my phone didn't have any bars at all, after arriving I had to borrow somebody's phone to contact Jeff. My husband and I spent our Honeymoon on Kauai. We found a great place to stay at a fair cost, but as it turned out, renting a car on Kauai was very pricey, to say the least. That's when I found Kauai rent a car! At first I was a bit worried because this is just a little place and not well known, like budget or one of those other large car companies, but I read the yelp reviews and for the most part everyone was satisfied. So I gave them a call to get a quote. The price to rent a car was more than fair! I reserved a smaller car with them and it was waiting for me at the airport when we landed. The very next night the car that was given to us started to drive weird and flashed the check engine light. I hated to call so late at night (it was around 9:30) but we had a reservation the next morning that we couldn't miss. I called and the owner answered. He was very polite and so helpful (especially considering the late night call). He swapped us out into a Honda CRV that night and didn't even charge us for the difference in vehicle size. The rest of the trip was enjoyable and the CRV was reliable. They were very professional and easy to deal with and if it wasn't for their fair prices, simply renting transportation for our honeymoon would have drained us. (considering that I'm a teacher and my husband owns a small business, we're not exactly knee-deep in income over here) If you're someone who is insistent on renting the newest model of the luxury vehicle then this company isn't for you, as their cars are a bit older, but they are reliable and your wallet will thank you---Or you can insist on a luxury vehicle with a bigger company, but you'll definitely pay the extra price and you probably won't get such personal service as kauai rent a car would give you. We used this company again two weeks ago when we returned and it was just as great as before. We love how easy they make it~ you just walk out to the parking lot and look for the description of the car and afterwards, just drop it back off in the short-term parking. No check out or rental car lines. This time we named our Esteem "rooster" and he was just as reliable as turtle. We also love that it looks like a local's car, so less worry about theft. Did I mention it's also cheaper than what rental cars will charge? Highly recommend! read more

You've got to be kidding me, after waiting for 2 1/2 hours I get this vehicle which is not what I thought I reserved but they didn't have anymore of the vehicle listed on my paperwork, go figure, but I could rent something else with additional charges. Watch out about the extra charges. Got their in the afternoon left and night. Do NOT rent from this place. If you think you are saving money ask yourself, what is my time worth. You want to be on vaca or spend your time waiting in line. read more

A friend and I just got back from a week in Kauai. I am so happy that we went with KRAC as we got to get a car for the entire week for a lower price than a car rental for 2 days from the national car companies would have charged. It was an older car, which was fine with us. We just needed it to run and have A/C, which it did. The most intense driving we did was up to the lookout in Waimea Canyon and it did fine (my friend, not so much...she is scared of heights). I absolutely LOVED the pickup and drop off process as the car was waiting for us at the airport and KRAC deducted the parking fee from the rental price. Drop off was just as easy as we left the car with a full tank of gas in the main lot and went right into the airport for check-in. Some reviewers have indicated a lack of response from inquiries of KRAC, but I did not find this to be true. I think KRAC is a great, local company and would definitely recommend them. read more
