Last September I was excited about the prospect of avoiding the car rental companies long lines and supporting local business but it was really hard to actually make a reservation with them. They wanted proof of insurance which the standard car rental companies never ask me for. I submitted it and didn't hear back. They wanted a $150 deposit that most other car rental agencies never ask for. It was like pulling teeth to actually get the reservation put together. After submitting my insurance policy I literally heard nothing back. I was going to send another reminder "hey, I want to give you business!" email but at that point I was so downtrodden by the entire experience I just went with Alamo. Didn't regret it one bit. The pricing was maybe $100 more for a week's long rental but it was smooth, seamless, and efficient. No long lines since they had my data on file and I just went to the parking lot to pick my car. Hoping these guys create a smoother onboarding process. Way too many headaches and hoops to jump through to save a few bucks. read more

NOT RECOMMENDED!!! I should have listened to the other reviews about this business scamming people for fees. Attached are pictures they sent me about how horrible the car was left when some sand and crumbs were left inside. I was courteous to clean out as much as I could but after 6 days some signs of use will be present. I don't travel with a vacuum. I'm attaching pics that THEY sent me so you can judge for yourself. (First 2 are from them with the horrible mess left behind and 3rd pic is how I received the car with spots along interior and mud left on passenger side) Then they claimed that sunscreen was left all over the car when spots were already visible from the pictures taken before rental. I have rented cars in Hawaii and abroad at beach destinations without ever having an issue. If the car is returned with slight signs of use the owner flips out. Communication was thorough, clear, prompt, and friendly from first contact all the way to wishing us a safe trip home after our trip. I had heard the nightmares about the big box car rentals from friends. Pineapple Express is a saving grace, to say the least. The whole experience was phenomenal. They picked us up within 3 minutes of grabbing our checked luggage. We were in our rental SUV after a very short ride to their lot & a couple of signatures, instructions, and snapping some photos. We always take a short video or take pictures for our own protection when renting, I thought it was great for both parties that Pineapple Express makes this a part of the simple process for the benefit of both parties. The vehicle was clean and comfortable. The beach umbrella & cooler backpack were much appreciated! The yummy pineapple & towels were a great surprise. You sign a waiver & agree not to go off roading or use dirt roads for beach access. I was a bit nervous about accidently ending up on a dirt road (I'm a very cautious person by nature) but using Google maps & satellite view, I was always able to find paved areas to park. In one case, we just hiked in a little further and that's always a bonus in paradise to me :) Their communication is so good, I'm sure if you have a question about a specific area before you head there - they can guide you on whether or not it's ok or offer an alternate plan. We had tracked in a bit of sand, so before returning the vehicle we shook out the weatherproof mats - which were so easy & handy! They were great and brought my husband back to our hotel vs. the airport as we were not quite ready to head home yet. From start to end our experience was amazing. I had to make the difficult decision to cancel my trip to Kauai after officials and local Hawaiians encourage travelers to postpone visits following Hurricane Lowell so that the island's resources could be prioritized for local residents and recovery efforts. Pineapple Express swooped in and saved my families vacation! Originally booked two cars with TURO a few months ago ....they cancelled one week before our vacation and the other right when we landed. Luckily Tracey and her team were able to give us two cars for our trip during one of the busiest weeks of the year. Came with complimentary beach chairs, umbrella, and towels. They even threw in a cute little ornament and cookies for us. We had a great time driving a beautiful Nissan rogue with all the bells and whistles. Talk about great service! We rented our vehicle through Pineapple Express and loved everything about this company. We love helping a family business. They were prompt with picking us up at the airport. Our car was ready to go . The price is the same as Costco but the service was amazing. Our rental included two beach chairs and an umbrella ( which at our resort would have cost us 70 dollars a day ) and a cooler backpack. They also keep in contact with us via text. Our trip actually started off great, but unfortunately this rental experience turned it into a nightmare by the end. We travel to the islands often and have rented vehicles many times, and this was by far the worst experience we've had. During our trip we drove to a state park that the company says is restricted in their contract. We acknowledged this and paid the $1,000 contract fine they demanded while we were still on our trip. We took responsibility for that and paid it immediately. When we returned the vehicle, my husband and the employee checked the vehicle together. We were given the all clear, no damages were mentioned, and my husband was shuttled to the airport. After we returned home from our trip and a 7-hour overnight flight, we received messages saying there was still a balance due for the rental even though we had already Zelle'd them payment when the rental was set up. I told them I needed to review our records to make sure we weren't double paying and that if anything was actually owed we would take care of it. Instead of allowing us time to verify the payment, they began threatening to file an insurance claim. Shortly after, they filed a claim stating there were "unknown damages," even though the vehicle had already been checked at return and nothing was mentioned. Another thing future customers should be aware of is that the vehicle's location appears to be actively tracked. We received messages while on our trip telling us exactly where the vehicle was and demanding immediate payment, which felt extremely invasive. The airport return process was also very difficult. Because of their shuttle process, my husband had to leave me alone at the airport with a toddler and multiple bags for over 30 minutes. Overall this experience was far worse than using a traditional rental company. The communication, payment demands, location monitoring, and insurance claim after the vehicle was cleared at return made the situation extremely stressful. I would strongly caution others to carefully review all terms and document everything when renting here. We did end up renting a 2nd vehicle for the day after the $1,000 fine as most of kauai is dirt roads and that rental company was a blessing. They even were in shock by what happened and allowed us to go to the state park. Pineapple express says its due to insurance that they wont let you go out there " its not covered on insurance" but then put in a claim to our insurance when we went to the state park!? Extremely pleased with the entire process that we had with Pineapple Express Car Rentals! We stumbled upon this family owned business after looking at the reviews of other rental car companies at the Lihue Airport. The rental rate was very fair and comparable to the others. The best part is that EVERYTHING was already included in the price! No add ons or extra fees. Car was clean and we had no issues. The response time from the company was extremely quick. We landed in Kauai at 2:05pm and made it to our Airbnb (10 minutes away), by 2:58pm. This shows how convenient and easy the shuttling process was. Unfortunately, Budget canceled our reservation twice without notifying us, with the second cancellation occurring just four days before our trip to Kauaʻi. I rarely leave bad reviews, but this experience ruined our vacation. We rented a car expecting freedom and flexibility, only to feel like we were being monitored the entire time. The company tracked the vehicle and made us feel stressed about where we drove instead of enjoying our trip. The policies may have been explained when we rented the car and signed after a long late flight. We were unaware that going down a popular well maintained gravel road was wrong. After being contacted we turned around and left the area immediately. We were still charged the 1000$ fine. The complete lack of flexibility or understanding is what ruined the experience. We were on vacation trying to enjoy our trip, and instead it felt like every move was being watched and judged. Even when circumstances changed and we tried to work with the company, there was absolutely no leeway given. Wow. I get a 3 page text 3 days before we leave with nine questions stating I must answer all nine questions. I called Tracy informed her It was a horrible time for me to try to answer these questions in a text I can answer them now on the phone call. She then told me she didn't have time to do that and I need to inform all of her employees what my plans are and answer the questions to them, which was a little frustrating. Now she tells us I screamed and yelled at her and her husband heard the whole thing and proceeds to cancel our reservation without issuing a refund or informing us?? No problem recorded the whole conversation because Tracy seems a little sketchy and glad I did. Can honestly say this is the first time I've had a business owner fabricate some crazy story to cancel the reservation when I questioned how much work renting this car had actually wound up being. And it was also interesting to see that renting a car myself from the airport is going to actually save me $273.03 for the exact same vehicle for the week. Go ahead, Tracy what kind of web of lies are you gonna spin on this one? I do see you have other negative reviews from other people who apparently you claim have also screamed and yelled at you. as I did no such thing now I'm thinking the other ones didn't either, interesting pattern. Anyway, thanks for saving me almost 300.00. Turns out I can rent the same car through Expedia and see about 13 other choices all at least $125 cheaper for the week than your rate Tracy. They made our trip from ease of pick up and drop off at the airport to adding special touches by providing beach chairs, umbrella, soft backpack cooler (which came in handy for all of our excursions) towels for sandy feet and bags for red dirt items.
