Absolutely horrible experience from start to finish. The customer service is beyond terrible, with zero communication at every step. When we picked up the car, nobody walked us to it, nobody did an inspection with us, and the vehicle was already covered in damage. Before we were even given the car, an employee told us the vehicle should not have been rented out at all and should have been taken to Texas for the season - yet they had us drive it anyway. On top of that, the windshield wipers were completely worn out and unsafe, which should never happen with a rental car. During a rainstorm, the wipers were so bad that we could barely see the road, putting us in a dangerous situation on the highway. To make things worse, staff attempted to drive the car off without properly addressing the existing damage. Later, when someone hit us and we were involved in an accident, the supervisor we spoke with refused to give us his name, which is extremely unprofessional and concerning. Despite the accident, we were told to continue driving the car. Now, after the fact, they are claiming the vehicle is totaled and are sending me a bill saying I'm responsible for it. I have been calling repeatedly to speak with a representative about this bill, and no one answers, no one returns calls, and there is absolutely no follow-up. This company lacks accountability, transparency, and basic customer service. I would never rent from them again and strongly advise others to stay far away unless you want to deal with damaged vehicles, unsafe conditions, unresponsive staff, and surprise bills with no explanation. read more

Rented a luxury car from Avis in Key West. I prepaid for 2 weeks at a total cost of $1075.00. After I returned the car I received my E-receipt for $985.00. So I had overpaid by $90.00 which according to the E-receipt was NON- Refundable. WHAT THE HELL I overpaid and Avis doesn't want to give me any refund. I called customer services and their excuse was I was LATE by 1 hour picking up at their Key West airport location. Poorest excuse EVER. I rented a car at the Glasgow Scotland airport for 8 days with a prepay. The car had a flat tire on day 6. After no less than 15 phone calls, I never got the tire replaced. I followed all of Avis's directions with attempting to get service and I had to abondon their vehical at their recommended service provider. I attempted 3 more times after getting home to resolve the situation. 48 hours later I received a notification that Avis charged me a second charge which over $1,500 above the prepay amount. I have yet to receive an explanation or detail what the costs were for. I contacted the US office and they forwarded my request for the detail. As of 60 days later, I have not yet had a response. Once Avis has your credit card, they treat it as it is their personal line of credit with no professional courtesy of communication on why. They also don't have a clue on how to service their vehicals when there is an issue. I will never use Avis again. This is unfortunate as I have rented for business several hundred times with Avis. They have lost a solid and profitable customer. In my line of work if I behaved this way, I would be unemployed. read more

How long does it take Avis to refund $1300 they overcharged? Answer: It takes over 2 weeks; and you have to provide them with a copy of their receipt that they printed for you off of their printer. . I rented a car from Avis last Friday, May 24, at the Atlanta airport rental car center location. the car had over 31K miles and looked pretty beat up. We were waiting at a cell lot to pick up my son and grandchildren to attend a family event, noticed the gas tank was less than full, and did take a picture of the odometer to discuss this issue later. After passing University exit on North I -85, our car totally shut down. There was no power, smoke was escaping from the under the hood, and we were in the middle lane coasting down a hill trying to get over to the right shoulder. Cars were going at a high speed, were not allowing us to move over, had my emergency flashers on, almost was hit twice, and we were concerned that we could stop in the middle of a the road. Fortunately, two Georgia state troopers were driving down the highway, so our plight, and blocked the two right lanes so we could get to the shoulder. The officers saved us. My wife called Avis as the officers and I examined the car. There was no transmission oil, the oil was low and smelled burnt, and the officers pointed out that this problem was ongoing, due to burnt markings around the engine. Avis said that they would send a tow truck, and that we were on our own to get to our hotel. It was approximately 7:30 pm, our grandkids were hungry for dinner, so we wanted to get to a restaurant. Avis stated that they do not have the manpower to bring us a new car, and the officers took our luggage and family in the back of cruisers to a nearby taco place. These officers were amazing and went way beyond the call of duty. We were all tired and stressed, and did not wish to go back to the airport for another car. We were staying in the Emory area, called Avis about bringing me a car from a Avis rental dealer near us, and were told there were no cars, and I had to go to the airport. We were in town for a family celebration, and I missed fun activities to go to the airport to get a car. I tried to contact the General Manager of the Avis airport, but there has been no return call. I hope my family can move on from this experience. I also asked the officers to send my their names so I could write a letter of gratitude to their supervisors. I rented a car from Budget last February from Budget, which is owned by Avis, and received a well driven Malibu. That car broke down after one day with transmission melt downs too. I wish I could give zero stars. Our experience started out good, we got the vehicle quickly, customer service was nice, we drove to our destination and turned the vehicle in with no issues. Now, weeks later, we receive an email stating there was windshield damage to the car, and that we owe an additional $640 for a new windshield. They are stating they have pictures. The window was not damaged or cracked at all when we turned in the car. The rep at the location where we turned it in at looked over the car and said we were good. They are trying to scam us! Complete Bait & Switch - Rented a car from Avis on-line via their website. Paid 100% upfront (I wanted to be sure I had a car when I arrived). I declined insurance coverage as I have primary coverage via my credit card - including for international rentals. Upon arrival in Costa Rica, Avis refused to provide me the vehicle without requiring me to purchase additional insurance from them. As I did not know if any other car rental agencies (Avis is off-site at SJO Airport) had any available vehicles to rent, I purchased the insurance as it was the only way to obtain the vehicle I had paid for. Avis refuses to negotiate this or even discuss. Stay away if you want to enjoy your vacation rental!!!! read more

I rarely rent cars and I rarely rent from the airport, but they were the only place open in an emergency. Avis was the cheapest with a friend's discount. The car was available, clean, and had no issues. Pickup and dropoff was easy. Dustin in particular was very helpful. read more

Recently flew into Norfolk International Airport arriving at 9PM. I had booked the flights and rental through Priceline and was told I would have a rental car ready for me at 9PM. Long story short, one hour later I still had no car. I was told there was a car but it wasn't ready yet and that there were about 12 people ahead me. Having watched the rental desk the past hour it looked like one person every 15 minutes was getting a car as they became available. If that rate continued it would be long after 1AM before I got a car. I decided to Uber where I had to go and forgo the rental as I had a Dr appt at 7:30 the next morning. Unfortunately it appears I will not get my money (0ver a $100)back for a car I never used, that was just forfeited. Avis has no problem it appears promising you a car at a certain time and then reneging on that deal, making you wait over 4 hours for a car and then keeping your money. I was out the cost of the rental car and I had to pay for the Uber fares on top of that. Won't be using them again. read more

Not only did it take nearly a week to get it back, but the gentleman, (and I use that term loosely)...was less than helpful. He said he'd call us back, twice, and never did. To spare you about 20 pages, I'll avoid listing everything that went wrong, but here's my top 5: 1. I had a reservation but they didn't have any cars available and we had to wait 30 minutes for them to move a car from another location. 2. I reserved a "full size" car and they gave me a Sonata, which is classified as a "mid size" by wikipedia, as well as every single car review site I could find. I normally don't care about this stuff, but it meant that my wheelchair didn't fit. I don't even mind paying the upgrade charge to get a bigger car, but it sucks that they use a non-standard sizing system that's different from what everyone else in the world uses. 3. The odometer on the car said 28k miles but their paperwork said the car had 2.8k miles. 4. When I picked it up, the car had a huge scratch on it that wasn't listed as prior damage. If you're getting a car here, check it out for scratches and dents if you don't want to get screwed later. 5. The car hadn't been serviced for thousands of miles when I picked it up (the dash helpfully tells you when the next service is due). A week later, Avis finally noticed and told me that I needed to get an oil change for the car. I had to get the oil changed on my rental car. WAT. 5. b. The person who told us to get the oil change told us it would be really easy if we just went to jiffy lube. That was the opposite of true. Turns out they have no idea what to do if you don't have a "fleet card" with precise instructions, and when they look up Avis they get a list of every Avis in the country and have no idea who to bill. We called up Avis so they could talk to jiffy lube and it literally took an hour for them to figure out jiffy lube's computer system. In retrospect, maybe we could have called corp headquarters and tried to reach whoever it is that prints out fleet cards, but we figured the person that told us that it would be really easy knew how they needed to be billed. Can I give zero stars? Awful. So awful. I will never rent a car from them again. I rented a car through Priceline for 3 days. For the 3 day rental plus $11/day insurance my total came to $123.81. Great. Fast forward to my pick up day, get to Avis where Jake helps me out. Or doesn't. Let's go with doesn't. Just inconveniences me. He talks me into the fuel package, fine. He prints the sheets for me to sign. I make notice of all the extra charges and ask him about them. He can't tell me what any of the charges are except for the fuel package and the car rate. Just telling me it's taxes. Because I'm going to be late for work, I sign and leave thinking "I'll call customer service and take car of it." I call customer service where she tells me the difference comes from a $58/day charge for full insurance. WHAT?! I am 100% positive I signed up for $11/day coverage. I have a receipt and confirmation number to prove it. That does NOT matter apparently. I'm told that I signed for it so I accepted the charges. I see your point.. but really? I find it extremely hard to believe nothing can be done because I initialed paperwork. My final charge is $318.61. A difference of $194.80. read more

The hours of the Darwin road location which is off airport are highly inconvenient. I did not have to rent any car from here, but I left something in a car rented in the airport. The location at the airport did not hold lost and found. It was there in this Darwin road location. I could not get much input on phone, so i showed up at this location on my lunch time only to find that it is closed from 12 to 2. And if i wanted to go on a saturday, it was open only till 12. I have some activities on Saturday morning so, that time didnt work for me. Finally when i found some time, the persons at the counter told me that it is past 3 months and it was disposed off. I requested them to check if per chance it may be there, but they did not. BTW, the hours printed on the location doorway for weekdays (8 to 12) are different from what is there on the website. (8 to 1230). Avis can consider moving lost and found to some other location with longer hours. read more

Quick and easy in and out. Not much to say here, but it was uneventful and when renting a car that isn't a bad thing. Located right next to the baggage claim, we had a quick check in as we had already reserved our car through work. A couple minutes and we were outside, across the street and in our rental. No surprises, and we're on our way in minutes. Returning the car was just as easy. Parked, walk across the street, check the keys back in and done, on our way home. This was one of the best/worst car rental experiences I have ever had. And to be clear, Avis, was the 'best' part of it. To make an insanely long story semi-short, I work for a company that utilizes a corporate traveling booking company. I had done my reservation online through their online tool and when I received to Wisconsin, the rental car price was listed at $400 for 2 days. Briana, who was the main employee helping me, quickly identified it and wanted to know why that was the case. Turns out, the travel agency had listed me as dropping off in Chicago just because I had a connection flight on my way back home out of Madison, WI. Here is where the real issues came up as we started to try and fix the pricing issue. I called the travel agency and told them to cancel the outrageous rental reservation and rebook at the normal $40/day rate. She said that she did, but on Avis end, it was still showing two reservations and not allowing Brianna to get me out of there. I ended up at the Avis desk for over an hour (to not fault of Avis'), but Brianna was so kind and fun, she kept the mood light and we chatted while she tried to figure it out. Unfortunately, she was unable to, but called a friend who worked there with her (this is at 1230am) and Anastasia answered! She tried to walk Brianna through the 'go around' she thought would work to get the system to allow me to complete the transaction and get to my hotel but to no avail. So here is where the insane customer service came in to play, Anastasia came to the airport after midnight and helped fix it! Unreal. It was a long day and a long night, but I was more than happy with the way these girls handled the unique situation and kept me in a decent mood. read more

Zero stars: Airport location 1) Upon my arrival, waited over 45 minutes for my 'reserved car'. I'm part of Avis' preferred program and they didn't have a car ready for me. 2) Twice now in less than a month, the airport location has charged me incorrectly. First time I was charged $1200 for a 4 day rental that was adjusted to ~$160. The second time I was charged ~$800 for ~$170 dollar agreed upon price. Both instances I was charged Avis' weekly rate for each day I rented the car. Something seems really fishy here. I'll give this location one more chance since I've been with Avis for business travel for ten years. If they can't get their act together, third time is a charm. Shape up please. read more

I actually wish I could give them a zero. They quoted me $225 for the rental but actually charge me $512. After hundreds of calls over several months they kept telling me that I needed to talk to a certain person who will never answer their phone or return my calls so I finally gave up. I fly up here every year and I will remember this next year and never rent a car from Avis again! Hope it was worth it Avis it cost you in the end. They would've earned a lot more money than that over charged if they would've just kept my business and did what they promised!
