Staff are helpful and friendly in person, but if you're lucky enough to get one of them on the phone, their customer service is horrible. A few issues with two different rentals in the past month: 1. Left an item in a car inadvertently. Item was never recovered. It took several calls and long hold times each time. At one point, the employee answered and immediately told me to call back later. Not a request, but a demand. 2. Went to pick up a car at their opening time of 6 am. No one showed up to staff until 6:10. 3. The number given in the rental agreement to extend a rental provides a message to call the facility you rented from directly to extend. I attempted to call for over an hour and never got an answer. Left a voice mail in the end which has still not been answered 24 hours later. read more

It hurts to rent with Hertz. If you do, you will know why Seinfeld has an entire episode about car rentals. They lost my car key after I did return after-hours in the drop box, so I got a late return notice three days later, and my bank account had been charged every day for late fees. Since no one answers the phone, I had to go back to the airport to state that I would not be leaving until they closed my rental contract since I returned it on time. Turns out they lost the key; someone moved the car from the stall we parked it but never entered that the car got returned in their computer system, nor put the keys back in a place that made sense. Never again with Hertz. I had to wait an hour and 45 minutes to pick up a car that was ready at the airport the entire time. They're the only company at the airport that keeps getting backed up, and creating a waitlist just to spread people out and make it appear as if the line is moving. I've had to wait close to an hour before with them but an hour and 45 minutes is the last straw. None of the other companies even had lines the whole time I waited but I pre-paid for my booking with Hertz and they don't refund it. The workers need to figure out a system that doesn't make customers wait and hour and 45 minutes just to pick up a car, plenty of flights are quicker than that. read more

Our overall experience was passable, but this location flat-out stole my Kindle Paperwhite 11. As I was boarding my flight, I realized I had left it in the glove compartment of the rental car. I immediately filed a lost item claim with clear details--including exactly where the Kindle was placed and the number of the parking spot where the car was returned. For over a month, I checked the status of my claim regularly, only to be met with the same useless message: "no results found." There is no way to reach Lost & Found directly, and despite sending over a dozen emails across 30 days, I received zero responses. No updates. No returned item. Nothing. This is beyond disappointing--it's unacceptable. The complete lack of accountability and communication makes it clear that this location either doesn't care, is actively ignoring lost property claims, or they're stealing lost items and selling them to unknowing buyers. read more

Like many others who have left reviews previously, I am a 20+ year gold member, I had a reservation with flight info arriving after 8pm. When I arrived at the Hertz counter, they were closed. There was no information about what to do...I was told by the competitor car rental agencies this Hertz regularly closes at 7pm and leaves their customers stranded. I ended up renting from a competitor...and I will be reserving with the competition in the future too. This was unacceptable service. read more

Avoid Hertz if you are flying into Madison. I arrived on a late flight and while all the other agencies were open, Hertz had closed for the night. What really made the experience terrible was that in the morning, I was told that they did not have a car for me guaranteed. If I had arrived right before they closed, wouldn't they have had a car for me? Wouldn't that be in the lot? Why couldn't I get that car first thing in the morning when they opened. It seems that they do not assign specific cars as they had implied by sending me a picture of "my car" before pick up. I had to wait until the next day at 1:00 when they said they were not sure if they would have a car for me. WTF!!!!??? I ended up getting a car but I will not use Hertz again. read more

If I could give this company negative stars, I would. This is absolutely ridiculous and fraudulent. My husband rented a vehicle and returned it on time with keys in car. They charged us $3,609 with the explanation that the car was not returned on time. After conversation, Hertz admitted the car was in fact turned in on time but then mentioned they couldn't find the keys. They then found the keys and still charged us. I'm not happy to give any business a bad review but I am desperate here. My husband has tried contacting Hertz several times, including reaching out to the corporate office and has been hung up on several times. How can we get our money back?! Avoid this car rental like the plague! I prepaid online. Just to be sure I called and talk with Jesse who works at the airport. He ensured me my car was going to be there. After a long flight I go to get my card and Jesse comes out talking about he is sorry and they he is sold out. Hertz you all should really consider doing better by your clients. First, I was hurry to leave when I got the car so I left without carefully check the car, then I find damages on the car after I took lunch, then you car image what after. They don't walk around with customers to do the inspection about the car when you take or return the car. They just give you the key, so be careful! Second, horrible customer services, lazy employee(form my experience, most time only one person called himself supervisor here and a manager you barely see it) will reject any reasonable requires after give your the key. I had a reservation for noon on 8/13/24 to rent a car at Hertz Car Rental at 6514 Odana Road, Madison, Wisconsin 53719. When I arrived there, I was told that they did not have any cars available. The person at the car rental office told me she was the only one there and she expected some cars to be available at around 2:00 PM. Drivers were being sent to Rockford IL to pick up cars. There was at least one other person who had a reservation to pick up her car at noon that day and she was told the same thing. The worker stated that she did not have the ability to make reserve a car from other local Hertz car rentals. As for being told that a car could be available at around 2:00 PM (2 hours after the reservation), that was pretty optimistic since it takes 1.5 hours each way from Madison WI to Rockford IL without considering the usual traffic conditions. Poor Planning, very bad customer service, a very badly run Hertz car rental office. I will never rent from Hertz in Madison WI again. read more

Easy to make reservations and convenient at the Madison, WI airport but horrible to deal with. Stay away. First they gave us a car that had some surface damages so we did NOT drive away in it and came back and got the original car that was assigned to us which made us feel like they may have been trying to have us take a dinged car. We returned the car 2 weeks later and all seemed fine until we got hit with a small ~$60 bill for some claim that we have no idea what for. We have yet to find out. We have emailed, called and been on hold for hours and still not explanation. We don't even know if it was for the car that we did not drive or the one we did and the claim date is during the time we had one car but we didn't file it and did not have any damages. So no idea. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. I picked up my rental car from the Denver airport. It was too small so we had decided to upgrade. The woman at the counter told us that the new car would be $50/ day. I was charged an additional $50/day on top of what I already paid before we got there. I contacted them after returning our rental car and was told that I was overcharged, but because I did not contact them before returning the car it did not matter and they were not willing to reimburse any money. I will NEVER use Hertz again and highly recommend using a different car rental agency that values their customers and will not rip them off. read more

I paid for a car ahead of time and when I got to the counter they said my car was sent to a different location. They said that location was closed and I would have to get there somehow the next day or they could charge me an extra $800 and give me one of the cars they had available at the airport. The person at the counter was very unhelpful. I called the customer service number and they said they could just change the pickup location to the airport one. When I went to pick up my Corolla, the woman at the desk explained that I had actually only reserved something "comparable" to a Corolla (I was, in fact, slated for a Nissan something-or-other). I was pretty disappointed, as I'd chosen this company because it had APPEARED a Corolla was available online. She asked me to wait a moment, and looked it up--there was a Corolla free, so she gave me that vehicle instead. I was very happy--it had been a stressful day. After hitting a deer, I was out a car. When I got out to the Corolla, it was clean, the mileage matched my paperwork, and I was ready to go. Upon return of the rental (Thanksgiving morning), the guy at the desk wasn't as particularly friendly/helpful as the original desk clerk (I couldn't blame him--I wouldn't want to be working on Thanksgiving, either), but he wasn't rude either, and he got my return done in no time flat, so I was grateful just the same. I was charged for 5 days (even though I picked it up Sunday evening and returned it Thursday morning). I don't rent cars that often, so wasn't sure if that was normal, but it seemed to be a lot of money for using the thing to get to work Mon-Wednesday. No matter. A-OK! It looks like I'll be renting a car for next week, too--and I intend to try Enterprise the next time. It'll be interesting to compare. I'll post that review too... read more

We got gas beforehand so I didn't pay attention to another gas station being at the airport or not, but you can walk right over to the terminal here, no shuttle needed, which is really convenient! When you get to the airport, they force you to pay additional charges. Here are the details: The agent at Hertz, in the presence of the manager, Sam, told me that it's a law in the state of Wisconsin that anyone who rents a car should buy liability insurance in Wisconsin. I told him that I have full coverage auto insurance and I don't need to buy from them. I'm covered specifically for driving rental cars. He said that my insurance wouldn't work in Wisconsin because it's from another state. He emphasized that this law only exists in Wisconsin and in no other state. I told him that I wanted to decline it and he said it was impossible. Later that night, I checked the law in Wisconsin and found out that I was completely misinformed. I quickly contacted Hertz Customer service. They apologized and encouraged me to return to the car rental the next day and ask them to remove the charge. I returned and the manager, Sam, was not surprised to see me at all. With a smirk on his face, he said he was there, and the agent only "informed" me about the liability. He said many people buy liability from them and change their minds the next day. I contacted Hertz Customer Service several times. I finally got an email from them yesterday. Here is their reply: "We have verified that you agreed to the terms and conditions on your rental upon pick up, therefore no adjustment can be made." Why even have a booth outside if, according to the woman in the Enterprise booth next to it, there is never anyone out there. Had a reservation at this location for a week of military travel. Picked up the car just fine. The problem came when I returned the car. When I returned the car, they guy at the counter just said thanks and asked if he could email me a receipt. I tried handing my contract to him and he said he did not need it. Two days later, I still did not have a receipt. I called to ask about it and I spoke with a woman who first said I still had the car. I explained to her that I did indeed return the car two days earlier and told her what spot it is parked in. She said she would call me back in a few minutes and take care of emailing the receipt. two hours later, no call from her. I call back, she tells me she spoke to the young man that took care of me and he apparently told her that I was uncooperative with him, refused to tell him my name, refused to show him the contract and that I just walked off and didn't speak to him. I explained to her that was completely false. He did not want to get off his chair. She guaranteed me I would have a receipt by the end of the day. Next day. still no receipt. Three days later, I need to file a travel voucher and I have no receipt for my car rental. I call again, as soon as I ask about my receipt she suddenly puts me on hold for over 10 minutes. for several hours she has not answered the phone. read more

I made a reservation online. When I arrived, I was asked to confirm the price, which was nearly three times as much. When I stated it was not correct, the employee said "You must have clicked on the insurance plan. Would you like me to remove it?" I checked my reservation confirmation which stated that I declined the insurance. He eventually made it the correct price. My reservation was for a "(D) VW Jetta or Similar". The description includes "V6 engine" among other features. Unfortunately I was given keys to a Chevy Cruz. I was suspicious, but gave the employee some credit and went out to the car. My suspicions were correct. This is not comparable to a VW Jetta, nor does it include the features in the description of what i rented. I went back inside and the employee insisted the Chevy Cruz was in the same class. I stepped back and looked at the Hertz website. The Chevy Cruz is in the "Green Traveler Collection" and the "C4" class, described as "Fuel Saver". I re-contacted the employee and told him what I found. He told me I was mistaking the Chevy Cruz with the Chevy "Spark". I asked him to look at my phone, which showed he was not correct. He looked at his computer for a little bit and then said "I don't know why it says that, but the Chevy Cruz is in the category of what you reserved". I asked him if the Chevy Cruz is a V6 (knowing the answer is NO.) He straight out lied to me and told me that it definitely was. Ha! He then offered to "upgrade me" to the class that I reserved and payed for, for an additional $10/day!!! When I said no, he began ignoring me and helping other customers who were behind me. I was already late due to my flight, and needed to get on the road. I walked out and took the [smelly and dirty] Chevy Cruz. I have been kicking myself since then, they have probably been getting away doing this to lots of people. I also blame myself for not staying and ensuring they make it right. I gave Hertz a try.. after using another rental car company for a long time. I definitely won't be going back and neither should you!! read more

The process of picking up/dropping off the car was very easy. No lines at the counter and the car was clean. While I was glad to have a car and the freedom it provided me in Madison. The worst Hertz in the system I believe. This last time I rented from Hertz at Madison they had no cars ready for customers..Monday morning 1000. Agent stated that no one cleaned the cars on Sunday. I waited 30 min for a car, others I understand waited for an hour. Also, no recognition for President's Circle and this loyalty. Completed the local Hertz survey and was asked if I wanted a manager to contact me...I did..no one contacted me. If I could give zero stars I would. I travel every week for business and rent cars all over the US. I rent with hertz as I'm a gold member and I like the way I am treated. Hertz is known for having the best customer service in the rental car business. I am very disappointed that my review today has to to be negative. I returned a car today at hertz at the Madison airport. When I returned the car I was told the fuel would be 100 as we didn't refill. I explained to the consultant, Javi Mitchell that we had opted for the prepay fuel. I asked her if she could please make the corrections. She told me and I quote " I can, but I won't". I told her how often I rent cars and how loyal I am to hertz. She could care less and was extremely rude. I have never been treated so horribly before. There was obviously a mix up when I rented the car and it could have easily been corrected. "Sir, you're at 2 days and 56 minutes, that'll be an extra $200 for the partial day... Really? Really? Since when did a fucking Nissan Versa command the rate of a high end sports car rental? This piece of shit runs on two rubber bands and a fan... The fan is for acceleration... Their excuse is because of the EAA Fly in, up in OshKosh, WI.. Like, 3 hours away. My opinion--Really bad experience at Hertz--Madison. When I got the car, I was told don't worry about the gas, bring it back as close to empty as possible so you are all set with prepay. Well, when I bring it back and am trying to make my flight, the counter person asked me what the mileage was and asked how much gas was left. When I responded with it's close to empty, she says with glee "well that will be 9.99 a gallon to fill it up!!" Ok, not what I was told but not going to spend 100 bucks on gas so I had to run over to nearby gas station to fill it up. Then, insult to injury, flight was cancelled and I could not make arrangements for another flight due to the 20 minutes I lost dealing with gassing up because of gleeful counter lady. Completely not helpful and really the worst I have dealt with, rigid, and just not a good situation at all. So, sitting here in a hotel in Madison thanks to Hertz. Lesson learned--avoid at all costs because it certainly cost me! And, of course, their 200 dollar hold on credit card which I am sure will be late to remove will just be one more kick in the rear end. I have never written a negative review of anything in all of my life, but this one merits my first. read more
