This place when I rent cars, they are welcoming and helpful. The counter person always treats me with respect and kindness. The cars are sometimes not washed. It is very easy to pickup and drop off your rental. read more

I recently booked a reservation through my corporate retiree benefits website that goes directly to Avis. I get the same discount as I did while I was employed. I then call the 1- 800 number for Avis to confirm my discount. When I arrived to pick up my car, they told me I no longer get a discount for being a retiree. They said this issue happens all the time. I feel Avis does not fix this problem because they don't want you shop for a better price. Since I was not pleased with a much higher rate the gentleman said he would cancel my Avis reservation, and book me with Budget Car Rental to receive a better price. It was still higher then my then my original reservation, but I did appreciate his help. Same check in counter, same exact car, two different prices between Budget and Avis. Since I do not like Avis bait and switch business practices I will no longer do business with them. read more

Came here on 2/13/21 for a rental car. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The vehicles here are late model and in very good condition. Ours had some scratches on the hood, side and door etc, they told us we didn't have to log it down on the inspection sheet, so I'll include the photos just to be safe. I need to rent a car for a few days once a month. The guys at the Union Station Avis/Budget are very courteous and professional. I make the reservation thru Costco Travel along with my Avis number, and check-in is very quick: just present drivers license & c.c and a few minutes later after everything is confirmed I have key (or fob) in hand and I'm on my way. The cars are always current year or prior year models, and if the size I requested isn't available, they upgrade to a nicer model at no extra charge. Returning the rental is even quicker: drop off the key along with mileage & fuel level, and I'm on my way. And most important to me, the cars are always clean and smoke-free. This is the one of the worst experiences I have ever had with a company. We needed to rent a car for half a day to go to NJ to CT. When making the original reservation I was told New Haven was unavailable to drop the car off at and that we had to drop it off an hour away from our final destination. Due to traffic, we missed the drop off time and ended up calling to see if we can drop it off in New Haven since that is where we were closet to. They said sure no problem but this will close an additional $200 for a 7 hour "extension" ( we had the car in our possession for a total of 3 hours). This 3 hour trip with Avis from NJ to CT cost us over $400!! All the while we could have easily reserved o drop it off in New Haven to begin with and were told otherwise. worst customer service and dirty car. was asked to sign a doc that there was no damage to car prior to seeing car. i refused. was presented with a filthy car. requested it be cleaned and was told they had no capability. asked for another car which was cleaner, but not pristine. console had soda stains and passenger seat was stained. windows and mirrors were filthy. again, I was asked to sign the doc about there being no damage. examined car and had employee document existing damage. after we started driving, we realized there was no window cleaner fluid in the back and it was low in the front. retuned car and asked for receipt. was told it would be emailed. went into office to get one. read more

Convenient location but NASTY staff. Condescending guy at front desk who treats his employees like dirt. Also when I picked up my rental, they sent to the wrong email address and didn't give me a receipt in-person. My card was charged and I was told to fill up to a quarter tank. When I returned, the guy told me it should be a FULL tank. Realized I hadn't gotten a receipt so I came back and got one. Method of payment said: CASH. They don't do a walk around or tour of any vehicles with you. Just "go find your vehicle" and that's it. Return it at your own risk. Seems a bit disorganized and/or clueless. read more

This car rental agency is convo entry located in the train station. It's best to reserve a car beforehand. The customer service associates are always friendly and if preferred, your reservation is always prepared; it's an easy pick up for your car. What is in incident about this location are its hours. It closes at 7p. I am told that hours may be extended until 9p. In the interim, during the hours in which this location is vlosed, Avis cars are available at the Tweed airport located 5 miles from the station. read more

Did not read any of the reviews here before renting. My bad! I have rarely experienced as bad a customer experience as here. During the check-in process they made a big fuss out of how important it was for us to 1) Keep the receipt for any gasoline we fueled into the car - telling us it was important that we returned any receipts about fuel. --- First time I've ever experienced this, usually you just want to return it with a full tank 2) They gave us a pink slip marking scratches on the rear end of the car - telling us that that this is what was covered - any anything outside of that was on us. As for #2 we had opted to use an American Express card to pay for the rental, to avoid the marked up LDW that they sell. When we checked out the car we saw 1) Dents on the rear of the car 2) Scratches all over, not only the rear - hood basically a thousand scratches 3) All seats were stained 4) Dashboard had a ton of scratches 5) Vehicle had not been cleaned, there were leaves, a fair amount of sand and a few parking slips inside. I returned to the woman behind the counter, and upon approaching her I mentioned to her that there was a few issues with the car. She, in an aggressive tone, told me that everything had been marked and that I were all good and should just leave alone - yet she was perplexed as I mentioned bullet 2-3 (in the situation I forgot to mention 4-5). An extremely uncomfortable situation - frankly I'm not used to being bullied by the company I'm buying a product / service from - all left me a bit perplexed. I walked outside and mentioned these issues to my wife - and upon my wife returning to the counter the clerk accused me of lying, and she told us that everything was okay and nothing to be concerned about (that's quite som inconsistency that can cost you thousands of dollars) Never ever again will I use Avis at this location, and in general I will prefer to stay away from the company to the extent possible. Absolutely the worse customer service I have ever experienced. I would give it a 0 if I could. I had a code from my employer that was supposed to cover liability and LDW. After using the code, it indeed did say that liability and LDW was included, and there was no charge associated. In fact, I did not even have the option to remove those two inclusions. My total came out to a charge that did not charge those two. However, after paying and confirming the reservation, my reservation suddenly said that I had an unpaid balance and that I would be charged for the liability and LDW. Customer service was an ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE. The first man I called was the rudest and nastiest person I have ever spoken to. He was condescending and clearly hated his job. After telling him about our extra charge, he basically was no help and did not know what he was doing, and told us to call back after a few minutes (not put on hold) because he was busy. Busy with what? Isn't your job to help customers? After calling back, nobody picked up. I had to call back 3 times before reaching someone. I was transferred to 3 different people before someone put me on hold and then ended the call. Having to explain the situation to multiple people was extremely frustrating and to have someone end the call before doing anything completely infuriated me. I called back again, and was again transferred to two different people before reaching someone who merely removed the liability and LDW completely. The staff were clearly not listening, which was evident as they kept asking irrelevant questions. I made it clear that I wanted the charges removed, not the inclusions. The woman who removed the charges did not listen to my frustration, but instead hung up. I had to call back AGAIN (keep in mind, this is the 4th time at this point, not including the multiple calls that they did not pick up). I called back, and this time, it was the rude asshole who had picked up our first phone call. This man clearly did not know how to treat customers and was quick to cut me off before I even finished my story. Despite my anger and frustration, I remained patient when I spoke as all I wanted was the two inclusions that are SUPPOSED to come with the code, without the unreasonable charges. He cut me off and continued to yell at me without even listening. Once he yelled his last words, he hung up after stating he has a line of other customers to speak with. What's the point of speaking to customers if you're going to be completely useless and ruin their days?? I called back one final time, and this time, I just wanted the entire reservation cancelled. I was not willing to contribute to a company run by the rudest people from the depths of hell. The only redemption to this horrendous story is that the final person called cancelled the reservation without charging the $50 cancellation fee. He initially argued that we would have to pay them as our refund total was less than $50. However, after re-explaining our situation for what was probably the fifteenth time at this point, he cancelled without putting up a fight. Worse company. We were there on the same day as Kirsten M. She gets it exactly right, though our rental was booked through Avis, not Budget. I was somewhat sympathetic to the staff, who were dealing with a lot of angry customers and from what I could tell kept requesting that cars be brought over from other New Haven locations to fulfill the Thanksgiving demand, only to find that whoever was doing the inventory control was sending them cars that were under recall(!!!). Then they'd have to tell people they'd promised cars to that they were going to have to keep waiting. We were really lucky to get one after over an hour wait. That is if you consider a car that reeks of cigarette smoke luck. (Hey, at least they gave us a can of air freshener.) But even that isn't why I'm writing now, and why I wish I could give this place negative stars. A few months later, after returning our car in the exact same condition that we'd set out with (with damage marked on the rental agreement), we got a letter from some collection agency telling us that we owed Avis around $2,500 for damage to the car. To my amazement, they had the gall to do this without providing pictures, and with an inspection report that was dated nearly a week later, conducted hundreds of miles away in New Jersey!!!!!! We pushed back, hard, demanding much more evidence and threatening to report them to the Better Business Bureau, and never heard from them again. Don't ever rent from here, and consider this a lesson to always take before and after photos of your car. (We had them, though had forgotten at the time we got the letter.) read more

I was very clear about this when I made the reservation and the reservation had the insurance information. They were willing to rent cars for other purposes. Truly the most disgusting customer service experience I have ever experienced. If this man was dying of thirst in a desert I would not give him water. We made a reservation for 7/2 with an employee discount code. Had a confirmation email which showed the rate that we booked at. We get to the counter at 6:30 (30 minutes before closing) and for whatever reason the rate shows up as $0 in his system. Not sure why this is an issue since we have a reservation and a confirmation, but we are told that he won't deal with it and we need to call customer service. Their completely brainless customer service is no help, and the guy at the counter as soon as it turns 7 says he is closed and 'his system is shut down' and we need to leave. We said we were not leaving without getting our car that we had made a reservation for and then he proceeds to get the POLICE to escort us out. Alex is horrible. I have gone to this location so many times over the years for the company I work for. I have never been asked to provide my company ID. So because I didn't have my ID I said ok let me just pay regular price, I'm in a rush. He then proceeded to quote the rate and asked for my phone number. I said all of that information should be on my Avis preferred account. He proceeded to tell me this reservation would not be linked to my account. I said why and if it can't be linked so I can get my points I'm not renting a car (cause I actually have 3 cars to drive but didn't want to park at the airport). Sajid, Patrick and Nabil went above and beyond to give me an excellent experience to the start of an overdue vacation where I was desperate to have a relaxing getaway. I reserved my car about two weeks in advance and pre-paid for the reservation with a booster seat for my 4-year-old son. When I went to pick up my car, all the location had was a toddler seat with a three-point harness. I didn't believe it would fit my son, but took it because it was that or nothing. It didn't fit my son. I called back and asked if the associate was sure there were no other seats, as it seemed surprising they were unable to honor an advance reservation. She said there might be, but she was the only one there and couldn't go to look. End of story. I had to go and purchase a booster for my son so he could safely make the trip from New Haven to Boston. read more

I read all the negative reviews here and still decided to rent with them because of the convenience of being located at the train station. "How bad could it really be?", I said. Well... When I walked in to pick up my car the clerk immediately started quizzing me on the different types of auto insurance, what the acronyms stand for, and what they really mean. After a few attempts, I gave up and told him I didn't know. This started a long rant where he was eventually yelling at me (in a small 10' by 10' room) explaining why I needed to pay for for additional insurance. Now, I've rented maybe 40-50 cars which by no means makes me an expert in the process. But, I've never been badgered like this even once. After 5-10 minutes of being lectured I told him I wasn't interested in any additional insurance and I'd just like to get the car and leave. He accepted, but very clearly stressed that any single scratch or dent in the vehicle no matter how minor would be my own personal responsibility, and Avis had the right to charge my credit card at their discretion. Ok, that's fair, but it seemed odd how clearly this was stated after I declined the additional coverage. So he makes a note that there is currently no damage on the vehicle and that I should inspect it to agree before I take ownership of it. The car was COVERED with dents, scratches, scraped paint, damaged fenders, etc. I found 8 problems within 30 seconds, and when I pointed it out to the second Avis worker who happened to be outside, he laughed at me. "You can mark it if you want but I'm not gonna do anything about that. That ain't the kinda shit we talkin' bout". Well, it certainly seemed like the kinda shit the first guy was talkin' bout... So I go inside to tell the first guy what I found. He starts yelling at me that there's nothing wrong with the car and if I think there is I should tell the guy outside to start marking it up with stickers. I explained that the first guy laughed at me, he didn't seem to want to help, and that it wasn't really my job to start directing the Avis employee, because I am not his manager. "WELL I CAN'T LEAVE THIS DAMN DESK, IM THE ONLY GUY IN HERE! WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO? YOU GO TELL HIM TO DO HIS JOB!" Again, I don't work here... At this point I decided to cut my losses and just cancel the reservation. The guy was shockingly polite about my request and handed me a statement indicating no charges were made. Just to be safe, I called VISA to ensure there were no charges. Apparently there were two charges Avis placed on my card, the initial bill, plus a mystery $100 charge. The VISA representative noted that these charges were authorized, but not yet billed. So perhaps they're legitimate and in the process of being removed. But with the way my interaction has gone so far I'll be sure to keep my eye on it. Oh, and I should note that while my interaction was taking place, a second customer was making similar complaints about dents and damage to his rental, with his comments being ignored and rebutted just the same as mine! Bottom line: avoid this place; it's a nightmare. For what it's worth, I got a rental from enterprise for $5 less, with no hassle and very polite & helpful employees. read more

I am compelled to relate the most unpleasant experience I had with your company at The 50 Union Ave. location in New Heaven, Connecticut. My girlfriend and I rented a car to pick up by 7pm on November 25th. We arrived at 5:30pm knowing it would be busy the day before Thanksgiving. We were surprised to see about a half dozen people or more waiting for cars because this Budget location had no cars to rent. The cars were being delivered from another location. How does a rental car company not properly plan to have vehicles to rent on the busiest travel day of the year? The two Budget employees were not writing peoples names down to organize a queue of people. They insisted that they knew who arrived when and were distributing cars to the proper people as the cars arrived on-site. Predictably after awhile they were not sure who arrived when and this lead to disputes among the customers. It was not a pleasant environment. The unpleasantness continued when we were informed that even though we arrived almost two hours early to pick up our vehicle there might not be a vehicle for us to rent. As you can understand this was very distressing. Holiday plans hung in the balance. We were informed that there was a solution. We could rent a car for a $35 a day upgrade fee. Having no other option but to miss our family obligations we reluctantly upgraded. This seems fishy to me. Less expensive economy cars that were reserved are not available yet a premium upgrade is the only option. After the Budget employee attempted to run my credit card literally five times (I counted) we got our forced upgrade. We had reserved a three day rental but told the Budget agent that we would return it within two days. He assured us that we would not get charged a three day rate and he would change it in the system. This never happened. The egregiousness of our "Budget Experience" becomes even worse when we return our car. On the 25th we picked up our rental just after 6:30pm. On the 27th we returned it by 3:30pm. When we saw the charges we were shocked that our total charges were almost $200 more than what we were quoted when we picked up the vehicle. Our two day rate was never put into the computer. The Budget employee who checked us in on the 27th was overtly indignant and said that our three day charge could only be "fixed in the system" when we picked up the car on the 25th. We calmly explained that this was indeed the case but she was unsympathetic and generally annoyed that we had questions about our bill. Also, I told her that the fuel was just shy of a full tank of gas as I had filled it outside the city limits of New Haven. I understand that a fuel charge of $9.79 per gallon is assessed. It was a 13 gallon tank. We were short about a gallon of gas. So that would be around $10. What was put on our bill? $46.50 fuel surcharge. She never left the office, never checked the gas gauge, just charged us quadruple. Exacerbated and about to miss our train we left the Budget office shocked and dismayed that at ever point of contact Budget seemed more interested in charging us as much as possible rather than providing us with a quality customer experience. All told what was estimated to be a $150.00 rental turned into over $300.00. While on the train we called Budget customer service and were treated so rudely by a representative name Keaughn (sp?) that we just had to get off the phone with no resolution to this matter. Thus this letter. I am formerly requesting a reimbursement of extra day rental fee (including applicable taxes and surcharges) and reimbursement for the fuel service charge. This is not the way a reputable company should treat its customers. I feel taken advantage of and disrespected by employees who had no regard for the customers they were serving and felt no retribution was forth coming by a corporate culture that condones over-charging and hidden fees. It is simply not acceptable. Case number: 15872013. I think it probably goes without saying but this place has some really poor customer service. The ladies that are working are dismissive, short and sometimes rude. But mostly, they just don't care about you. When you walk in it's very clear that your presence is an annoyance to them. They'll take your credit card, make you sign some paperwork, and assign you a car -- both times I've had a reservation for a small car and been assigned a massive SUV, "nothing else available". I called on Saturday at 3:30pm to let them know I was running late and stuck in traffic and ask what the late fee would be. She, of course, had a totally different figure than the Avis website said and wasn't interested in discussing why her figure was so much higher than what the official paperwork said. Anyway, the real issue is that while we're talking at 3:30pm and I'm telling her I'm running late in traffic she never once thinks it's appropriate to mention that they close the entire place right at 4pm. Not a minute later. So I arrive at the train station just in time to make my train only to find out that they're closed, I can't drop the car off here and I now have to drive 15 minutes to a rinky dink New Haven airport and call a cab to take me back with all my luggage. The lady behind the counter went out of her way to make sure I knew that she was doing me a favor and was annoyed that I wanted what I paid for. She also made it quite clear that she thought I was stupid and a complete idiot for asking for things that I was entitled to. The clincher was when she called me a liar when I told her I had called another Avis location and they said they had no cars available. She said they were closed and I found myself arguing that they were open when I called (before 1). I had to leave in the mid-size car that was acting up instead of the upgraded SUV the customer service agent had promised me. If you go to Tweed Airport, use the other rental car service or call another location. read more

No frills service, but at least they don't keep selling you extra stuff. There's never a line, and its rates are lower than the George Street Avis. Budget shares the same staff but the signs only say Avis. The Jetta they offered was in superb condition and never had a problem in 500 mi (except a low oil alert, but the oil level was fine when I opened the hood to check.) read more

I left my suitcase in the trunk and upon returning to Avis to retrieve it I was told that it was 'gone' and that they 'tossed it', completely violating company policy. I was also never contacted that a suitcase was found in my returned car, despite them having more than the necessary information to contact me. The manager, Patrick, even insinuated that the people who clean the cars out most likely stole it, but he didn't want to bother asking them because he knew they would say that they didn't find anything. He basically told me to accept that my suitcase was taken because, and I quote, "this is New Haven". Have already filed a reprot with Avis and I hope to see this branch begin to follow protocol when dealing with personal property. Will NEVER associate with this branch again. read more

HORRIBLE ON SITE CUSTOMER SERVICE Given a choice, please go somewhere else. I called before 4pm on a Sunday to ask if they had cars available and from the start the employee was SO rude he answered upset just because I asked a question. I decided to reserve online to avoid this person. I went to pick up at Union Ave next morning and the same employee alleged the credit card on file was not the one I used to reserve (the only card I have). I showed him the credit card had been charged by Avis but said I had to call customer service anyway. Customer service confirmed it was the same card and said I had to speak to supervisor (Patrick). The "supervisor" was SO rude saying how he hated prepaids just to follow up by saying he could override the "mistake" in their system again stating he hated prepaids. Needless to say this "supervisor" didn't apologize for their mistake, instead he doubled down by repeating "that's why I hate prepaid". After the paperwork was done the "supervisor" handed the keys and told me to inspect the car myself, which was filthy. There were two employees that morning and all in all I have never seen such rude, disrespectful and insensitive service in any forum. read more

I've rented here for over 5 years about 2-3 times a year. They are the BEST! I even take the train from New York to come rent a car here.
