Do not rent from this location. There is no communication between the consumer and the shop. I was given one price walking in and was charged double walking out. The car smelt horrible, like curry, I literally had the interior detailed because I could not tolerate the smell. If I could give them zero stars I would. We rented a couple of cars from them before. The car was decent. You pretty much get what you paid for. It was cheap. Cheaper than most rental places. We were pretty satisfied with their service in the past except this recent one. Our relatives came to visit and we needed a bigger car. We picked up the car few hours before we need to pick them up at the airport. An hour after we picked up the car, we noticed that the registration of the car were expired for 3 months! We called them up and asked if we could exchange the car but they said that they're closing in 5 minutes. They told us to go to the LaGuardia or JFK airport to do an exchange. Well, to make the story short, we did get another car from the Avis at the LaGuardia airport. It's unbelievable that they would rent out a car with expired registration! The service here were not bad. The staff work very quickly. If you are renting a car from this place, please inspect the car carefully. Make sure the car has a valid registration. read more

My husband and I needed a rental. We tried 2 enterprise locations and they were not very helpful. We called Avis and was able to speak to someone at the actual location and confirmed that they have a car on the lot. We gave our name and got there within 15 mins. There was a line for the car rental (please keep in mind this Avis is located in a gas station). The price ended up being twice what was originally given. When picking up the car at the rental counter I was given the impression that I was paying an extra $37 for extra insurance, not for each day and there were many extra charges. When originally renting the car when buying our airline tickets the price was $260.58, the final price was $510.58. Our plane arrived 2 1/2 hours late at the Charleston airport and we were rushing so it is my fault that I did not read the contract thoroughly but the counter person absolutely made the insurance sound like it was a one time $35.00 charge. The other problem was that the car reeked of marijuana. We realized this before we left the airport and immediately called Avis to let them know but because we were running late we did not have time to exchange and were stuck smelling like potheads for the next four days. read more

I cannot recommend this business. They charged me for being an hour late - $51.08. I rented to pick up at 2:30 and drop off 3 weeks later at 2:30. I called to find out if the car was ready for pickup one hour early. They said sure, no problem. No mention of an earlier drop off time. Then insisted on charging that outrageous amount for the one hour, when I returned the car at 2:30. I will go back to renting at Enterprise. Much pleasanter experience. read more

I was hesitant at first with this location at 1.5 stars. But I gave it shot with it's competitive prices vs la guardia and manhattan. The cost difference was around 400$ For Friday to Monday. I took an Uber to this location at 50$ from midtown. I did not want to pay that extra money in the city. Plus less drive time for me to the Hamptons. And this price difference is between an intermediate vehicle (Avis Hyde Park) and an economy (manhattan/la guardia)! The same vehicle would've been a 600-700 difference I showed up to avis Hyde park and everyone was very homely. Prepaid it all so only used my credit card for deposit. Vehicle was perfect and roomy for the Hamptons. 12k miles on it. Returning was a cinch. I cleaned it, filled up gas tank. Dropped off car and keys- they checked in and printed a no balance receipt. I recommend to anyone who shrieks at manhattan rentals. Do Not Rent Here!!! I rented through Budget. Car rental was closed at my reserved pickup and drop-off time. I was able to get the car and drove it for over 200 miles with no issues. After returning the car, I was charged for a tire issue. The company only provided the repair invoice as documentation. Budget will not do anything even though the charge is very suspicious. THE Worst rental experience of my life time. Ronnie get a clue you know damn well what a farse of an operation you are running. We rented a van for 2 days and the price difference was about 1/2 of what it would have been picking up from LGA. I called the day before and twice the morning of pick up to make sure that they had a van. They were rude on the phone and simply said car would be ready at pick up. Upon arrival the poor employee was standing outside with the keys to the suburban he had for me. He had locked himself out of the office and had to leave to go home to get another key. In the meantime he gave me keys to the smoke filled disgusting car which we rejected. 45 mins later he returned while we were dying in the 105 index heat and now 4 other customers were behind us in the queue. He then gave me another suburban which seemed ok (dirty but not smoky) yet when he pulled up the wheels sounded like the F train in Mahattan. Finally we requested a Dodge minivan in the lot which was filthy. He went off to vaccuum and wash car. An hour later we were on our way. Avis preferred customer service saved the day and we are not paying a penny for this rental. THIS place needs to be shut down unless you want to experience world class service on the back roads of Delhi or Bangkok. This is the AVIS from hell stay very far away. Oh and I called the next day to speak to the owner Ronnie and he said "have no idea what you're talking about" Told him I expected him to adjust fuel which he did. Don't ever rent from this location. I used it because of it was convenient. I initially Had an issue securing the vehicle category I requested even though I received a telephone call confirming my reservation 3 days prior to pickup. They were only able to secure a vehicle from a different location after I threatened to contact management. When I returned the vehicle, they called me, AFTER, they charged my credit card claiming that my car was way too dirty and needed a full detail that would cost $300. I told them to remove the charge and eventually they allowed me to clean the vehicle myself. Keep in mind that they accepted the vehicle in its condition when I turned it in. I spoke to management and they told me that this is a problem location and that they received multiple complaints. This location is a franchise location and is not under the direct control of Avis. This local (New Hyde Park) Budget Rent -A-Car was chosen as it is close to my work, and they were repairing my wife's truck. I had a good per day rate from online and was promised by the clerk they would match the rate for extended days, but when she checked out they overcharged me by over $370.00 The corporate office refunded the discrepancy so 5 stars for Budget (Corporate) but 1 star for this location. read more

I had (and am still having) an absolutely awful experience with this company. I stupidly pre-paid for a car rental reservation with these guys in October 2014 for a car i picked up in December of 2014. However, the next day i realized that i would not need the car for as long a period as i had pre-paid so i called and asked for a refund for the rest. The amount of my refund is supposed to be for over $600. However, when i called in October, they told me it was not possible to issue a refund until i actually picked up the car. In spite of my protests regarding this policy, they basically just told me that there was nothing they can do. I decided to wait and not make a big deal. When i went to pick up the car, they had me sign a slip for the entire original amount owed and informed me that i would have to call their main number in order to get a refund and that they could not do it at the branch. Once again i protested and once again i was told that there is nothing they can do. I called the main office today (December 22, 2014) and have now been told that the refund can only be issued when i RETURN the car. Once again i protested and was told that the only time a refund could have been issued ahead of the car being returned was when i first called back in October!!! I explained to the guy that i did ask for the refund back in October but he just basically said that whoever told me this back then had it wrong and there is nothing he can do about it now. That is basically their slogan, i guess..."sorry, there is nothing we can do about you being dumb enough to rent from us" Anyway....avoid these people if you can and whatever you do, DO NOT EVER PRE-PAY. read more

I prepaid a reservation online, called them a day before to make sure they have cars available on pick-up day, the guy on the phone said not to worry about it since I have reservation online. We get there the next day and the only car available was a coupe which is not what I reserved. The guy wasn't even helpful. I didn't wanna ruin the day so I just opted for upgrade since we really needed a car that day, but apparently there was a problem with my cards, which is ridiculous, we even tried my friend's(additional driver) but it all won't go through their system. So I just cancelled everything. (I will update this review once I get the full refund). Went to a nearby ENTERPRISE instead and everything was smooth. Got a rental in less than 20mins! read more

Wouldn't use again! I went to this avis on a sunday since they were the only one open in my area. They only had two cars left. I had a choice between a kia or accent. I took the kia. This is the dirtiest rental I have ever had, dirty on the outside and inside. The car is filthy!!! It definetly has not been cleaned in between rentals which is unacceptable. Also when I got into the car the dash displayed low windshield washer fluid. This is something that should be checked after after each time a car is returned!! This avis needs to raise thier standards if they want customers to return, I will not be. If I could give this place negative stars I would. I am not sure how Avis stays in business. I have rented from them twice in the past few weeks. This was not because of great service or great prices or great cars. It was because they have a facility a few blocks from my house and I can walk to them to pick up my car and home after I drop it off. Three weeks ago I had a reservation that was make several weeks in advance. It was for a trip I was taking and when I make the reservation I told them and reserved a van to carry a few bicycles. When I got to the place they only had compact cars. I told them this would not work and I needed the vehicle I reserved and was told they do not have it and I would have to contact other facilities to find one. When I asked the person behind the counter to help me locate the vehicle I was told "This is not my job" I left wondering what I was going to do since I needed to leave for my trip in a few hours and I did not have time to look for another vehicle. I called customer service (from the parking lot) and was on with them for over an hour and was told they cannot find another vehicle and I was out of luck. They did issue me a $50 credit for the next time I rented. I was in a bind. They did have a small SUV that would not fit my bikes but I was in a bind. I took that vehicle and had to disassemble my bike to get them in there and then reassemble them when we got to our destination. Of course, one of the bikes got damaged doing that and I had to replace one of the gearsets. When I did return the vehicle there was no record of the $50 credit so I did not even get that. Fast forward to two days ago. I needed a car since my car died and had to go into the shop. This time I needed a full size car because of a handicapped passenger who could not get in a SUV or Van. I made the reservation confirming the requirements a few times. I called back to confirm that is what I am getting. The confirmation stated what I was getting. I called the location letting them know that is what I needed and when I got there, of course, they only had a large SUV that my disable passenger would be unable to get into. I explained to them I could not use that vehicle and the same SOCIALLY CHALLENGED and CUSTOMER SERVICE INEPT person as I dealt with in the past told me that this is too bad but that is all they have. I asked if she can help me locate another one at another Avis and was told "this is not my job" and provided me the phone number for Customer Service at Avis. I left and, from the parking lot, called Avis customer service and they were closed for the weekend. I ended up making a reservation with another Avis that was several miles away. I am not sure what the purpose of a reservation is if every time I make them the proper vehicle is not there? I am also not sure how the reservation system works when the reservation line told me what each location has AND the person who kept saying "this is not my job" also informed me that the people in the reservation center cannot see the individual cars in her inventory so they will keep booking reservation for her location even though there are no cars there. I am not sure why they keep someone at that location that is totally incapable of interacting with customers and resolving issues (or assisting in getting a resolution) I am done with Avis and with Budget (where people go when they are sick and tired of Avis BUT do not know is the same organization as Avis) read more

This Avis location is inside a Gulf gas station. We found this location on Priceline.com when searching for car rentals. At $30/day, it was definitely the cheapest rate around. We were able to book the reservation with no problems on Priceline and then when the time came to pick up the car at Avis, we had no issues neither. Registration was a breeze and we had no problems with any of the workers at the gas station. The car was brand new and therefore, no checking up on scratches/dents. When we returned the car, they also did not check for scratches/dents, but did check the gas left. The other positive about this place is that it is open on Sundays for returns/rentals, so that you are not forced into renting for an extra day since most places are closed for Sundays. This will be our go-to place for car rentals from now on! read more

Your rental agent Farooq was friendly and knowledgeable. When I came to the counter, he remarked something like you like Fords right? I have that in my preferred profile notes and he is one of the few reps to mention this to me. Usually they try to give me a Hyundai or kia. It was nice to get something I actually wanted. Only negative is that the gas wasn't full at pick up. Considering it's a gas station, I was surprised by this. The rep told me that Avis doesn't reimburse the station for gas so they don't provide gas to Avis... Seems kind of crazy for Avis not to have the cars gassed up and ready to go. read more

Stay away, far away. My wife and I rented a car from this location, which is a grimee walk up window at the BP gas station. They are conniving, my wife rented the car as I was unable to go. They gave her a dirty hydunai, with Louisiana commercial plates on it. The way we found out was while driving on GCP, a cop pulled us over, he let us off with a warning. We called Avis headquarters to complain, they said to return it and we will get a new car. The issue with the new car, a Kia, is we have 3 small kids which all need car seats, which is very tight in a Kia. The Avis rep my wife talked to also said to call us back after the rental period is over and we will rectify the situation which never happened, they said they can't do anything for us. UPDATE This woman's name is Theresa and my god...she acts as if she doing you a favor to help you get your rental. As if you didn't pay for it and this isn't her job to get it. When I got my receipt for this reservation I saw that that I really didn't get the vehicle class that I paid for. Paid for intermediate but got a compact. This below is the review I started prior to the returning the car. **************************************** The next freaking day when I almost knocked my knee out of place getting into the car, I had to call and find out what class this was because it definitely wasn't intermediate. When I called to ask what size was the car I received, the woman there told me it was full size. I just didn't like that I paid for an intermediate class and received a full class vehicle. I requested the class I paid for because I was going to a funeral and wanted everybody to fit in the car comfortably but no... There's only 2 people in this gas station. Ronnie and I forgot the woman's name, but she likes to argue. Instead of admitting fault, she proceeded to tell me full size and intermediate is the same thing. How Sway? And evidently not if they're different prices. Ronnie is nice and I don't usually have a problem with him. And I ordered from Avis directly. read more

I rented an AVIS car in Venice, Italy and drove it to Croatia this past July. A few days before I left got an offer for a ride to the Venice airport. I called the Avis office and asked if it was ok to return the car in Croatia instead of Italy. I was told "of course." I called again to make sure it was alright, and was assured it was ok. I returned the car to the location I promised, and signed the sales slip for the agreed price for the two week rental (plies gas surcharge, which is fair). Within a few hours Avis charged me a fee for returning the car to a different location. How much? $7,400! When asked by an Avis employee if I could provide I was not told about the fee, my reply was no - I did not record the phone conversation, but who in their right mind would agree to a $7K fee rather than drive a car three hours? I intend to fight this to the end. I have rented many, many cars from Avis. I have always paid any fee that was applied to my rental. I am shocked, disgusted, and furious over this treatment. I was apparently told incorrect information from an Avis employee, and am expected to pay the price for it. That is not going to happen. read more

No Stars - AVIS CHS AIRPORT I rented with AVIS (which was $80 more for the rental than Budget, but they gave me a Budget vehicle). My flight was delayed. I was traveling with my handicapped sister, who is in a wheelchair. I arrived at the AVIS desk, the woman just said, "go outside, follow the walkway all the way around to the right, your car will be parked in spot C 12, which may be a Budget spot. It was pitch dark out at 9:30 pm, and pouring rain. We followed her directions, but they were wrong! The row our car was in was directly in front of the exit. You cannot "cut through" this lot with a wheelchair and a cart full of luggage, due to to yellow parking stops. We finally found our car, thanks to directions from a gentleman who was in the lot. No instructions were given on how to operate this vehicle. I was not told that is was a hybrid, and would make no sound upon starting. I was not instructed where the defroster or the rear defroster were, or how to operate the windshield wipers, or the circular park/reverse/drive gadget, the likes of which I have never seen in all my years of driving. The "full size" Ford could not even fit two suitcases in the trunk! I will NEVER rent from AVIS again. I think AVIS owes me an apology and a refund. It was despicable the way we were treated! If I do not hear from an executive today via email, I will post these comments publicly. The counter employee saw I had a sister in a wheelchair and a cart full of luggage. I should have been offered assistance, better yet, the car should have been brought to the exit door 20' from the AVIS counter, where there was a wheelchair ramp and the car could have been explained to me in less than five minutes, but your inept employee did not deem that necessary. My daily driver needed a new alternator so I would be 'car-less' for at least two days, possibly three ...what to do? Usually I rent a car when we are on vacation, and at the airport, so the thought of renting a car 'in my home town' was quite the foreign idea. I immediately went onto priceline.com and perused the search results. What's this? ...a Budget/Avis rent-a-car business nearby in New Hyde Park ...willing to rent me a car for three days for about $200, unlimited mileage! I clicked on the 'Submit' button and reserved my car. Wifey drove me to the Gulf station, just north of Hillside Ave, where a BETTER car was offered for LESS than the original (web) price. (Somebody pinch me!) After walking around the car (to 'verify' the condition) the representative then had the car washed and shortly thereafter ...I was off. The Hyundai was a pleasure to drive, got good gas mileage and had Sirius radio to boot. The a/c worked GREAT during the July heatwave (remember those days?). Even though I was 'supposed' to return the car at 5pm, they let me return it at 1pm *without* incurring any 'charges'. Of course, I returned it with a full tank having only driven approx. 200 miles. Next time I'm 'stuck' for a car, for whatever reason, I will definitely use Budget/Avis, by the Gulf station, on New Hyde Park Rd., and frankly, so should YOU! read more
