From the moment we walked in we felt welcome. The store front is a bit on the smaller side with a smaller lobby but it works. The staff is amazing and super helpful. We rented a car for the week since we had a few trips planned to/from LA and the OC plus it was move in day for our college kiddo. We rented a midsize SUV and I was given a choice between two cars. No muss, no fuss I was in and out with my rental in no time. Pro tip if you are a Costco member book through their travel website. When I arrived to pick up my rental, the door was locked. A note on the door said to call or text, which I did, but there was no response. As I was leaving, another customer came and explained that there is often only one person here, so they are sometimes in the back or getting gas. She called the number, and someone immediately picked up and said they would be right out. 15 minutes later, someone came. She had been at the car wash. After helping the other two customers (I was an hour early) she quickly grabbed a few sets of keys, explaining she had just been delivered several cars and was going to see if any of them were suitable. See the pictures. If this was the best car they had, I pity the fool (Mr. T reference) renting another midsize vehicle. She also mentioned there was only half a tank of gas, but to take a photo in case they charged me for not returning it full. Finally, the car smelled of smoke and air freshener. After all the signs in the lobby that stated hundreds of dollars in penalties if you smoke in the car, and since my phone doesn't have smell-o-vision, I tried calling customer service. There is no option for " this car is not acceptable " in the automated menu, so we are off to Disneyland in what my daughter labeled the Mitsubishi Smokelander. I was going to make it one star, but the woman behind the counter was really hustling and doing her best, so I had to give an extra star for her. read more

There was 1 person working and she seemed stressed out because people kept coming in non-stop and she was working alone. First car had 3 good ties and 1 BALD TIRE. I went back in line and let her know and she offered a new car which was nice. The new car was cleaned, but didn't seem super clean. Looks like someone tried to clean the car with a 1 minute timer haha. Otherwise, an ok experience. I did choose the cheapest car rental option so I got what I paid for haha. Horrible place. I reserved and paid for a full-size sedan for a week, but they only gave me a compact car. No apologies, no price adjustment. The tank was 6/8 but the contract said full. They corrected the fuel level by hand when I showed a picture but it was not updated in the system. Upon return at 11:45 am on a weekday, the office was locked but with an open sign with a number to call or text. They ignored my texts and calls and they didn't show up for 25 minutes. They didn't even offer an apology for keeping me and another customer waiting. Then they try to make me pay for gas (returned with 7/8) and for an extra hour. Avoid. They are dishonest, scammy and with zero customer service skills. Avis needs to fire those hardly working there. read more

Whenever you plan to rent a car, you expect a clean safe vehicle with a full tank of gas that will allow you to safely transport your family to your desired destination. I had a confirmation for a medium sized SUV. It's what I received when I arrived to rent the vehicle and instantly took it home to load get ready for the trip along the 15 highway. My intentions were to roll out at 5am. We get in the car and proceed down the street only to have the low air indicator light start glaring. What's up with that? Of course I remember it was cold and most likely just need a tiny bit in one tire (I'm envisioning the rear passenger). Within 3 miles of our house, we are at the gas station next to the freeway. It's now 5:20am and I am checking the air with the automatic gauge. Every FLIPPING tire needed over 4 pounds of AIR! OMG! I'm anxious. My stomach feels like it's on a bad ride. I say a focused prayer and hope for the best. We managed to get to our destination and back within the week without the tires exploding and ripping to shreds. Concerned for the lack of safety precautions, I made certain to inform the manager about the issue when I returned the rental. Boy was I disappointed! She admitted they don't check the cars unless a light comes on. What? They are in the same building and share the parking lot with Firestone! No apology. No appearance of being concerned! If your hours say you open at 730AM, then you should have an agent at the store ready to go at 730. The day of pick up, an agent didn't walk into the store until 745. Now I'm waiting to drop off the car right now and there still isn't anyone here to open as of 747. Called the number posted on the door and sent them a text, still no answer. Car rental was not that great either, not as clean as it should've been and smelled like smoke. I should've stuck with Enterprise. I always have good service with them. read more

Lots of poor reviews on here and mine is no different. First car I got I found out at night the headlights didn't work. Called and told them I would be exchanging in two days. Went in and they didn't have a new car for me for another day. Finally got a new car and this one I kept getting low air alarms and had to fill with air every day. Also it is difficult calling them. They often don't answer and you can't leave a message the recording just tells you to go to the website. Also complained to corporate and never got any answer. read more

Stay away from this rental business! Horrible customer service. Reserved 4 months in advance for an intermediate vehicle but received a Kia Soul (compact) instead. They claimed they ran out but didn't offer an difference in refund or upgrade. I wonder how long our vehicle had been sitting because there were spider webs on the side mirror. When we returned the vehicle, we had filled it up at at the gas station ONE freeway exit away which is less than 3 miles away from this Avis location. The lady was so rude and said we need to fill it up because the gas went down or she'll charge us $9.99 a gallon. It was still showing full so I don't know why she threaten us. We showed her our receipt, we only drove it 2.5 miles after filling it up but she didn't care. Had to go to the Chevron down the street for their overpriced gas (almost $5 a gallon at that gas station,geez) Luckily it just stopped at less than a gallon. Never again at this location! This Avis location is by far the worst I have ever dealt with. Even though the office is open, you have to call a number for someone to actually show up. They rake you over the coals for cleaning charges when there was nothing to clean and then claim you had an animal in the vehicle. Cindy is the owner and she was great. I also had the pleasure to speak with another of the workers who pulled up my online reservation the day I rented the car, absolutely stellar service. This Avis location is very convenient for me because I live not too far from the location and they open 7 days a week, unlike others that close Sunday's and I needed this car on a Sunday! From what I've seen they typically only have 1 to 2 workers, but they work fast. RENTAL: I have had problems with other car rentals where the car seats were stained, minor parts didn't work in the car, and there was leftover smoke residue. My compact Ford Focus was absolutely perfect. The car was very clean though maybe just a little dust on the dashboard, didn't smell like cigarette smoke, and was fuel efficient. I drove about 1000 miles and only filled up the tank twice. The tank took about 11 gallons and ran at an average of 34 mpg. FEES: I reserved my 4 day rental online and received a Costco discount. When I came in to pick up my rental, I had an extra fee pertaining to the type of vehicle they assigned me that was available that day. When I returned my rental, there was a vehicle license fee charged per day. At a total of about $11 extra from my initial reservation charge. CONS: Only bad thing about this place is, the parking lot is small and crowded, you just have to park in the back and walk a teeny bit. There's also no place you can leave your car while you rent an avis car, so make sure you get dropped off. Also there's no key drop off area, you have to return your car during operating hours, which is 7 days a week. read more

I typically rent from Enterprise Rent a car, but I wanted to book a rental as early as possible on a Saturday morning to drive to Vegas. This Avis was opened an hour earlier than Enterprise so I booked it through Costco travels to at least earn 2% back with my executive membership. I ubered to this Avis right when they opened. They told me the economy car I reserved was not available and that the only thing available was a SUV for an extra $20/day. I didn't want to argue or negotiate so I just agreed to it. I gave her the card I used to reserve the car and she tells me it didn't go through. I was confused and checked my mobile banking and it shows I had at least $20,000 available credit. To expedite the process I just handed her another card and she said it was declined. She says my cards are being declined and that my information wasn't matching. There was people waiting behind me, so I didn't want to put up a stink and just walked out of there. Said screw it and just booked a last minute rental with the Enterprise nearby and just waited the extra 45mins for it to open. When they opened, I gave them the same id and credit card and it goes through without a hitch. I got the Nissan Sentra for almost the same price I was going to pay at that shady Avis and left for Vegas over an hour later than I wanted. The card that Avis said was being declined was used all weekend in Vegas without any issues. Paid for my room, deposits, food, drinks, etc all on my card. I am actually glad my reservation didn't work out because based on all the other negative reviews regarding their shady business practices, I might've dodged a bullet. read more

I have been going to this location for years and now I think im going to either ditch Avis altogether or never come back to this location. At pickup I was told I'd be given a Ford Flex as my rental car which is okay. But the car they gave me had a huge dent and dings all over the place. I did not sign up to get a dented and dinged car, that's not a rate that I'm paying Avis for. I'm paying for a new car that isn't damaged. I have also had continual issues with the cleanliness of the vehicles at this location. So, no surprise when I rented the Ford Flex I had a dirty car. There was still stuff on the floors, so I know they didn't even bother to vacuum it. Then, I drove the car for a day and came back with a full tank. The woman, Stephanie, who took in the vehicle had the audacity to tell me that I hadn't filled the car all the way (I had just been to the gas station and filled it all the way with 10 gallons). She had an attitude from the second I said hi to her and has generally been unpleasant every time I have checked a car in or out of this location. I genuinely dreaded even returning the car when I came in and saw her. She even had the audacity to charge me for two gallons of gas even though the tank was full. Which came out to an additional $23 which is insane because I spent $40 to avoid paying this fee. I caution you from using this location or Avis because they believe that they can get away with this behavior and that such employees are worth keeping. read more

We used to rent cars from this location fairly frequently. Anytime we have a road trip we're here to pick up a car as neither of us wants to put the miles on our own cars. Unfortunately it seems the location has changed owners or management. We rented a car in November to head to Vegas for Thanksgiving, we were there at Delano for 3 days and when we tried to come home the car wouldn't start. I called the info on the Avis paperwork they give you and they said it would be over an hour for a Jumpstart. We're at a huge hotel on the strip at 6am, how it is going to take that long? I remember I have AAA, call them, less than 10 minutes they have a guy there to jump the car, dead battery. Called Avis back to cancel their tow, no problem. We get home and they tried to charge over $300 for THEIR dead battery. The headlights were on auto so it's nothing we did and didn't even use them, what a scam. Fast forward to last week, again off to Vegas and the car my husband picked up was covered in dents and dings, stained upholstery and the car smells like a combo of weed and vape. Disgusting. They put 2 air freshener trees in the car and called it a day. For someone with allergies this is a nightmare, It was really bad. I would have returned the car but my husband was pissed and didn't want to go back and deal with it. Also, the last 2 times when he's tried to pick up the car the front door is locked, he's had to wander around looking for an employee in the back. We'll be going to Enterprise from now on. I had to extend my rental contract by one more week. I called the Rancho Bernardo office and was told of an additional 10 dollar charge for extending the contract. Also, I was going to be charged on a daily basis going forward. I decided to return the vehicle which was 2 hours past the " return time". I was then surprised to learn that I was still charged for one more day since I was 2 hours late. I was not told of the extra charge for the day till after I returned the keys. I subsequently asked if I can take back the vehicle for the day since she was charging me. Unfortunately, she would not allow it. To top it off, they are very dry and bitter people. I rented a crossover SUV and picked up and dropped off at this location. This was my first time being here and it is walking distance from my home. The customer service representative, I think her name is Cynthia, and she was very welcoming. The place was pretty quiet when I picked up the SUV, she was able to show me the available cars. I was grateful that she let me choice from the 2 on the lot. I was out of there in 10 mins. The SUV ran nice and smooth. I needed it to drop off my niece for college at San Jose State Univ. and the drive up and down Cali was long but the car ran great. When I came to drop off the car, there were several people here picking up and dropping off and Cynthia was able to help all of us as quick as possible. She remember me and asked about how the college move in went and that was very nice of her to ask. I totally enjoy her customer service skills and I will definitely recommend this location. I know I will probably have to rent another suv crossover when the school year ends, I will be getting my car from here again. read more

We arrive for a reservation made online for a mini-van as we walk the lot to look at potential cars a "woman" runs out of the building letting us know "these are all reserved" only have two cars left in the minivan .We were like ok just walking the lot doll. We wanted to add 2 drivers to the rental and I have been renting for years from this location prior to CURRENT management and they never required a credit card for an additional driver just license. I rented a car for one day. I had to walk as it was parked way down West Bernardo near the freeway entrance.....full of damage. I call that night as of course no inspection and they are closed before I even do a uturn. In the morning I get "don't worry about it" when I called. 2 months later, I get billed for damage. 1st call...you won't have to pay, and yet they charge it...2nd call "sorry, I'll refund it now"...and then they only refund 1/2. I INFORMED THEM that it had damage on the way out and got "don't worry about it." 3rd call, "we'll look in to it and let you know in 5-7 days after we listen to the calls." Both calls said I'd get a refund or wouldn't pay but I suspect something will happen to those recordings. I will get the repair for that VIN pulled if I have to. Horrible customer service. I definitely believe that going to a car rental place is something that everyone dreads. It's very similar to going to the airport and how people feel about the airlines. You have that one super rude flight attendant that doesn't listen to you or help you. Those customers on the plane that want to sit together and take your seat and fight about it even though YOU payed for it. The oh so famous flight delays and sleeping in an uncomfortable chair in front of a bunch of random people you don't know. Yes. Renting a car, in my opinion , is very similar to that type of experience. Iv'e rented cars from 4 different car rental places and it seemed like something always went wrong. Like the person who rented the car before us messed up the car and the car rental people tried to place the car imperfections out on MY tab! Instead of doing what they were supposed to do and check the car BEFORE they rented it out again. Or the wheel was stuck in a place, broken, and almost caused me to crash. Or having me sign a contract that says if there is any scratches on the car that I will be charged for it and having the car brought to me already full of scratches, setting me up for failure and telling me that that's the only car that they can rent out, forcing me to tell the guy to pose next to the car so I can take pictures to prove the car came that way so that I am not liable for THEIR ruined car. So as you can see and probably read from multiple car rental reviews, renting a car is pretty damn stressful. All I want to do is give my information, my card, get a car, drive it, bring it back nice and sound, and be done with it. I once almost missed my flight because a car rental place tried wrongly fully over charging me and made me stay in their office for almost 2 hours. I wanted to go to Disneyland with my boyfriend and our car was in the shop at the time so we decided to rent a car from Avis. When I first went inside the room was huge and air conditioned nicely. Every other place Iv'e gone the room is tightly squeezed with not much room. I sat down and waited while a customer was being helped. He seemed to be in a rush and a little irritated. Iv'e worked in customer service for a long time and I was dreading that the customer was going to make the worker upset, resulting in her getting upset with me. But when it finally came to my turn there was no negativity at all. The woman who helped me was name Cindy. When we were going through the paper work she told me all the risks and stuff that could happen and went through the contract with me line for line and made sure I understood. This made me happy. Every other time Iv'e been to a car rental place, they skim through the contract and forget to mention things to me, so if I make a mistake that I didn't know about they try to blame me saying, "Well, the person who helped you said they did tell you and you don't have proof that they didn't tell you." is what they respond "What you want me to record every visit I have with someone in case they lie to me so I'm not over charged with something THEY messed up on?" So yes, having someone tell me EVERYTHING, the good and the ugly helps me make sure nothing goes wrong. When I got my car it was a super fancy black dodge charger. I felt so small in it. No scratches or dents or crap on the floor of the car. It was like I was picking up a brand new car from the dealership. I also like the push button to turn on the car feature. Always fun and exciting! For a week after I returned the car I regularly checked my bank account for any surprise over charges from this car rental place. Nope. Everything went fine. I turned in my car, they gave me the thumbs up that everything was good and I went off my marry little way. So if you want a spot to rent a car with no stress, this is the place to go. read more

Everything was at least decent until we returned the car when the clerk said the car smelled like smoke. No one in our party of 3 smokes. We're all over 50 and no one else was in the vehicle. The car was driven to Vegas, self parked, driven back, parked and returned in the morning, that's it. The car was completely clean. If we get charged an extra fee we'll write to corporate or sue if necessary. Her response and behavior comes off to us as someone who is fishing to scam a couple hundred bucks. STAY AWAY! Having rented from other Avis locations previously I didn't think twice about renting from this one. I called days ahead to ensure I was receiving a rental within the guidelines they specified and they assured me I was. Taking the family on a 2,600 mile road trip requires comfort and this the reason for the rental in the first place. Upon pickup of the vehicle I was completely displeased to be handed the keys to a low end, completely basic Kia Sedona Mini van. All other mini vans I had seen from Avis, and that I was assured I was renting days before, have leather and are well kept. This Kia was the lowest grade line you could get at a premium price. Unfortunately for me I was even provided a dirty car so I could clean it before even getting on my trip with the family! No leather, no plush, no noise barrier from the outside (don't worry about having a conversation while driving on the highway), dirty upon pick up on the inside and no extra storage for anything like their other vans! While filling up for gas I noticed the front tire are worn to their wear marks (safety apparently isn't too important). The windshield wipers were well worn as well not being able to keep a clear view on the driver's side of the windshield. As you drive down the highway the airbag light comes and goes. On the final stretch of coming back to San Diego I am stopped at a boarded patrol checkpoint where we are questioned and searched for drugs. A drug dog alerted to us and they did their job stating that if it wasn't us with the drugs than it was a previous renter. Don't forget I have my 1, 3 & 10 year old children in the car. So after that I renter the car 50 minutes later than the lady behind the counter stated I could to not be charged another day. I tried to provide a little feedback from my experience with her and the assistant manager but no response at all. So if you're a Costco member like us and you see Avis as a preferred car rental I'd say choose another option as if you do have any issues they aren't going to solve them or even treat you like you're a valued customer. My experience was probably because they knew I was renting a car for 11 days putting a lot of mileage on it and now that it's at 30k miles they can sell it. Bummer. read more

When I returned my Avis rental to the Bernardo Center Drive location in Ranch Bernardo, Ca there was no one there or answering the phone for an hour so I could complete my return. Customer service couldn't help me return my car. There was no drop off box or anything I could use. The hours posted for the location are 9 am to 12 pm on Sundays. I got there at 10 am and finally at just after 11 am someone showed up. The Avis employee was not apologetic at all and acted like I was an annoyance to her. It was a huge waste of my time and ruined my schedule for the rest of the day. I rent cars often and have never experienced anything like this before. Huge disappointment! I was getting my car fixed for the day and they referred me to this place. They barely had any cars but I was not picky. Two months later I get a random bill that states there was broken glass and I Owed $183! My mom was with me the entire day as a witness, there were no damages. Unbelievable! I have rented a car on two separate occasions with this Avis location and I absolutely never will again. It was simply awful dealing with their staff not once but both times. Their customer service is nonexistent and the franchise owner and staff are rude, sarcastic and snotty. Conveniently the owner and one staff member have the same name so they blame each other for past poor service. Should you complain, they just brush it off and don't take you seriously. They simply do not care about anything except finding a way to extract more money out of you. First, it is Avis's corporate policy that if you use a debit card not only must you prepay your full rental but you also have to pay a $200 "deposit". Pick one, Avis, you don't get to have it both ways. Either charge a deposit or make me prepay, but doing both is abusive. Trust me, this complaint will go to the Attorney General. However, if you dare put a dog in the car beware - they will charge you $150 regardless. No where is this policy stated and it is subjective. The rental envelope says that they may charge a fee for excessive cleaning but no where does it say what that fee is nor what is determined to be excessive cleaning. They just say that's our policy. You had a dog in the car and it will cost you $150. Again, there is no use complaining because they simply do not care. It's a shame they are so convenient but I absolutely will never go to this Avis location again. read more

Unlike the other reviewers here, I've only had one experience renting from this Avis -- but it was a very positive experience. I've rented from Enterprise a couple of times, but I needed a car as early as I could get. Enterprise opens at 8, but Avis opens at 7. The waiting room isn't anything to write home about. In fact, it's fairly ugly with old, dirty carpet and outdated computers. They still use old dot-matrix printers and carbon-copy paper with the perforated edges that you need to tear off! (To be fair, I think Enterprise does as well.) Despite the archaic-looking computers, however, I was in and out in about 3 minutes. I've never had such a fast experience, and she didn't try to upsell me on all the unnecessary extras. I really liked that you can park in the parking lot in the back. Most places will make you park down the street, and it could be hard to find street parking in this area. It's nice to just park your car a few spots down. UNPROFESSIONAL HOT MESS! Never renting from them again! Rented a car as a last minute resort for something and was so disappointed! I needed the car early and even though you can rent at 8:30 on Friday, they don't open until 9:00 Saturday and told me I would have to pay a whole SECOND day on the vehicle for just 30 minutes. Enterprise in Poway is 10x better. Way more professional, staff is nicer and I will be renting from them going forward. read more
