I do not understand why they do not have more cars. Reserving a car only to learn they "upgraded" you to a bigger car that uses more gas is solely because the car you reserved is not there. I reserved a small car and was presented a muscle car -- the only rental in the lot -- because the customer with the small car was late returning it. I waited 1 hour for the small car renter to return it in a fluster. I took it with ¼ tank of gas and no cleaning because I was very late. Avis needs a bigger inventory at this location or for some rental car competition but unfortunately Avis has a monopoly here. read more

I had never returned a rental car at a train station before, until I returned a car to this Avis location at the Stamford train station. It was convenient; we had picked up the car at the Hartford airport but had driven down the coast for a few days and dropped the car off here before catching a train back to Baltimore. However, it wasn't the easiest car to return: confusing instructions and had to wait for a while inside to talk to someone about returning the car (we couldn't just leave it like we would when returning a car at an airport location - they needed me to tell them the mileage?!). Glad it's there for convenience, but the process wasn't so smooth. If you're returning a car here, definitely give yourself on wiggle room on time before your train, because it's not as easy and "thanks; the keys are on the dash." read more

I rented a vehicle from this location today and was met with unprofessional and impolite behavior, from Lercy, that I must share with you in an effort to improve customer relations here. I made an 11:00am reservation to pick up a vehicle today; however, I was not able to arrive until about 1:30pm. I called multiple times, to inform them of this, but never received an answer. After waiting in line, I checked in with the representative, Lercy, who informed me, "You're late for your reservation." That comment was not necessary and took me by surprise; however, I took my seat as she said. After waiting for about 20 minutes, she signals for the lady next to me to come up to the counter and this lady wasn't sure so she asked if she meant her or me? I looked over to Lercy and asked if she meant me? She rudely waved her hand to dismiss me and pointed to the lady next to me and said, "No, not her you!" I said out loud "I thought you were calling me because I had a reservation at 11:00am." The lady was going to let me go ahead of her, but I told her no that it was okay, I would wait. Lercy then repeats (across the room) that because I was late for my reservation, they don't hold the car and the car had been sent back. Really? All of that across the room? How rude and unprofessional! So I replied and let her know "I wouldn't know that because I don't work here but now I know." Another man listening in, asked if she said there were no more cars? I told him no she didn't say that, she told me that "I would have to wait because I was late." Lercy then has the nerve to keep talking to me, from way across the counter, and tells me, "Trust me, I know what I'm doing! That's how it works here" I told her that I was not talking to her and that wasn't necessary! Very impolite and unprofessional. When I was finally called to the counter, she helped with my reservation, and I immediately told her that I didn't appreciate how she spoke to me earlier and that it was impolite. She said, "Okay!" and asked for my drivers license....wow! She couldn't care less! It would just be my guess that this sort of behavior is not part of Avis' customer service training. I don't usually rent from Avis, because of the long waits at this location. I usually rent with Enterprise. I came here today because they were open later. But after this treatment, I don't plan to return. This behavior is not acceptable and, in my opinion, needs immediate attention. Thank you! read more

If I could give this place negative stars I would. I arrived today from NYC to pick up a car, and there were zero Avis attendants at the desk. I waited for nearly 20 minutes before two appeared. I was then given an electric vehicle and told there were no other options available. I started driving to a baby shower about an hour away, when I realized the car was nearly dead. I was now tasked with finding a charging dock, and sitting at the station for over an hour while the car charged. I was already running late due to the attendants being MIA, so because of the charging fiasco, I missed nearly the entire shower. It is unbelievable and fully negligent that the workers would rent me this car and not confirm that 1. I know how to charge an EV, and 2. Inform me in advance that the car was low in battery. I could not be more displeased. STAY FAR AWAY and rent elsewhere if you can!!!!! read more

Needed a car for the week and Avis made me an offer I could not refuse. The service had an air of 'I rather do nothing,' but eventually I had a pleasant conversation with the Avis employee. There was some miscommunication concerning the vehicle, but it was straightened out in no time. I left with the GMC Acadia, with all the extra's. EZ pass is available in the car for an extra $2.50 a day ($10.00 a week), and that comes in handy. The car was not cleaned when we received it, so we had to get rid of some items left in the car. However I loved driving this vehicle throughout the Northeast region, and I would consider renting from Avis again: If the price is right! read more

My brother and I rented a Ford Express van for our family trip. He got the van and while driving from the rental place to pick up the rest of the family. The oil light came on. He brought the van back to the rental place and the only option they had for us was to get an oil change ourself. Our trip was delayed two hours because of this. After the oil change we proceeded to pick up the rest of the family and while trying to put on the AC the buttons started falling off. The buttons to the AC's all fell off and we couldn't put the Ac on. That week happened to be the hottest week, we were well over the 90s. It was so hot that many of the public schools had an early release. It was critical to have the AC on especially because one of the people traveling with us was my one year old son. We were already behind on time due to the oil change so we decided to keep trying with the AC and finally we got it to work. There were all sorts of lights on in the van. I believe the check engine light was on as well. It was just one thing after another. When we returned the van, I told the front desk lady how dissatisfied we were about the rental and the service. She seems as if she didn't care. She told us the manager would give us a call and obviously it never happened. They are unprofessional and careless. They don't check the cars. I am writing this review to warn people and save people from all the trouble that we had to go through. We will never use this rental car company again. read more

Be careful at this place. If you leave your car here out of hours, the garage attendant will charge you $28 for leaving the car overnight at their parking garage and then the attendant will demand another $28 convenience fee. Avis says they are not responsible as it's a separate. I had no idea about this and nothing I could do. read more

I booked a car one month in advance and paid upfront, yet there was no car for me when I arrived. They tried to give me an upgraded vehicle - but when I inspected the car it had an expired temporary plate on it. I was renting on August 1 and the plate had expired in April!!! Who the hell is checking this stuff?!?! Horrible customer service at check in. I have NEVER had a good experience with the employees at this location. Despite signs everywhere that Avis has a non-smoking fleet, car reeked of smoke so I could only drive with windows open and was generally in poor condition. When I picked up the car the agent told me it had a half tank of gas and I should return it with a half tank. I did return it with a half tank and then was charged a $130 fuel surcharge! I noticed this after leaving the desk, went back to the agent and he said he took this charge off, but the online receipt I received later still showed a $130 charge. I will give an update with the lady's name who helped me with my reservation but she was great. Pleasant and very helpful!!! First car i got unfortunately smelled so bad of smoke that i swapped it the next day. It took some time to figure out how to do that and the lady was not irritated considering it was a monday night and i was there with some drama swapping rentals!! She made sure i locked in my rate and even walked me to the car to make sure everything was okay this time. I agree with Ralph. This place has some employees who truly hate customers. I've rented from here several time because it is within walking distance of my house and close to the train. I've never gotten a "hello", "how are you today", or "thank you". I have gotten plenty of attitude and even been ignored. I use this Avis just about every week. The staff is actually quite friendly once they get used to you, so as a frequent renter I've had no issues. Victor at Avis went out of his way to help me and my friends with a ride. We were in a bit of a pickle. We initially had a hertz reservation for 7...but Hertz closes at 7! Which is ridiculous and we missed it. We were going to be trapped in Stamford if it wasn't for Victor and Avis. I dropped off my rental car here, it was fast and fine. No hidden charges so meh.

We have rented here before and swore we would never again. The service is so bad. We rented this time because Hertz next door (a better service experience) was closed. The agent was disinterested to the point of rude. Gave us a slip of paper and told us to check the car and report any damage. The car looked like it driven through a forest - scratches and dents everywhere. We went back in and suggested he come and inspect the car. (We declined insurance because it was covered by our credit card, and we expected trouble). Meanwhile, another customer had a downloaded coupon on his smartphone and the other Avis agent refused to accept it, claiming they needed the paper coupon. We won't go back, even if it's less expensive. read more

It breaks my heart to see such awful reviews. My Avis/Budget experience this weekend was incredible and there's not enough people to make an effort about a top notch experience. The main reason being two employees-Lucy and Bertha. Returning a car by 4pm at the end of memorial weekend is a challenging cut off. Not only was Lucy patient with my checkout but I noticed she waited for several others to avoid them getting charged a whole extra day! One of the worst experiences I've had to date. Walked in expecting my car to be ready as an Avis Preferred Customer. Not only did they not have the vehicle I reserved but my reservation was simply gone. After showing a confirmation to both apathetic employee and manager, they resumed to advise that they did not have a record (called Customer Service and the reservation was in fact there). Was advised by the manager that my confirmation doesn't guarantee me a vehicle. Weird, because that is what a reservation is for. The customer service at the Stamford, CT location is terrible and employees are beyond grumpy and ignorant. I would routinely get charged a fuel fee for driving under 100 miles even after I told the Avis rep that I filled-up the tank. Most times I had to go out of my way to show the receipt before the charge would be taken off (and I was a preferred customer who rented every weekend). Other times I was in too much of a hurry to even show a receipt, but sure enough the fuel charge would still appear even with a full tank. I am just glad Avis is no longer my employer's preferred vendor bc the Hertz next door is much friendlier and accommodating to its repeat customers. read more

I've rented a few times with this location and overall had good experiences. But at last rental, the condition of the car would be described as "unacceptable." The guy pulls the car up with the window all the way down which I thought was strange since it was raining out. As soon as I get into the car I know why, it smelled like somebody spilled an entire bottle of perfume in the interior, either by accident or intentionally. I had to ride the entire way with the windows partially down so I wouldn't get sick from the smell (I can still smell it in my mind a month later writing this review). There was also a tinge of something really nasty that they were apparently trying to cover up. Definitely a scrupulous tactic and I will not be renting from them again. read more

I was a bit skeptical about renting from Avis after reading the reviews! However my experience was great. First when I arrived there was no line and no wait which was unlike right next door at the Hertz where they had only one service guy at the desk with 3 people waiting for cars. Avis had 2 people on desk and they processed my information in under 10 minutes. I booked an economy car with SAT-NAV. On the last day of trip the SAT-NAV malfunctioned and I was locked out of maps because it wouldn't take the PIN number. On returning the car I got lost and being directionally challenged couldn't find the Avis return entrance so I phoned the office in a panic as I needed to get to JFK to make a flight. This is when I got 'Amazing Above and Beyond' customer service- so after explaining in a panicky voice my problem the Avis guy on phone said 'don't worry I know where you are from your description and I am coming to get you and you can follow me back'. Someone arrived in 5 minutes - flashed lights and got me to the return entrance. From there they did a speedy return check and they deducted the extra for SAT-NAV without asking. Honestly I wish I could rate them 10 stars for their great customer service that enabled me to catch my train and flight. DON'T BELIEVE THE BAD REVIEWS!
